Audi Q9
Photo: Audi Photo: Audi
The 2027 Audi Q9 and SQ9 are new, large three-row SUVs that give the German automaker a true competitor to luxury SUVs such as the BMW X7, Cadillac Escalade, and Mercedes-Benz GLS. Power comes from twin-turbocharged engines: a 429-hp, 2.9-liter V6 in the Q9, and a 591-hp, 4.0-liter V8 in the performance-oriented SQ9. Both models use an 8-speed automatic transmission and have standard all-wheel drive. The exterior and interior styling are harmonious with the upcoming 2027 Q7 midsized SUV. Inside is the familiar double-width driver’s gauges and center infotainment screen, along with the standard third screen for the front-seat passenger. Like the Q7, the Q9 has conventional controls for the mirrors, windows, and lights, and the elegant interior features wood trim and subtle chrome details. The Q9 will feature adaptive headlights that continuously adjust the beam patterns to prevent blinding oncoming traffic, and all of the automatic doors can be operated by physical controls, the center touchscreen, or Audi’s app. An adaptive air suspension is standard, and all-wheel steering is optional. The Q9 and SQ9 will be the first models with Audi’s partial automated driving system that lets driver take their hands off the wheel when traveling on certain highways.

BMW 3 Series
Photo: BMW Photo: BMW
The new gas-powered 3 Series looks a lot like the all-new, all-electric i3. Appearances aside, it’s a heavily redesigned version of the current 3 Series model, with new technology and performance tweaks almost everywhere you look. The flagship M350 xDrive gets a 437-hp turbocharged six-cylinder engine—a 51 hp improvement over the outgoing M340i model—and standard all-wheel drive. The rear-wheel-drive 330 has a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and optional all-wheel drive. The steering and suspension are said to be upgraded for improved handling and a smoother ride. Various M options are available for sportier handling and a more aggressive look. Like the i3, the 3 Series has a unique projector-based display that spans the entire width of the dashboard and a collaborative advanced driving assistance system that will not automatically disconnect when the driver adjusts the car’s speed or steering.

BMW X5
Photo: BMW Photo: BMW
BMW’s midsized SUV is redesigned for the 2027 model year. The standard engine remains a 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder, but the engine now makes 394 hp, a nearly 20-hp jump over the previous generation. Power for the X5 50e xDrive plug-in hybrid comes from a 308-hp, 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 engine and a 194-hp electric motor, for a combined output of 483 hp. An eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive are standard. BMW estimates that the X5 PHEV will be able to travel 44 miles on electric power, a 15 percent improvement over the previous generation. The exterior takes styling cues from the X3 SUV, with large, flat wheel arches and narrow headlights that form four X’s. Bigger changes are inside, where the driver’s gauge cluster has been replaced by a slim panoramic screen that sits at the base of the windshield and stretches its width, working in conjunction with the standard 3D head-up display and 17.9-inch center touchscreen. The all-wheel-drive X5 40 xDrive goes on sale in late 2026, followed by the rear-drive X5 40 in early 2027. A V8-powered M version arrives in late 2027.
Price: $69,800-$79,800
On sale: Fall 2026 (X5 40 xDrive); Spring 2027 (X5 40, X5 50e xDrive, iX5 60 xDrive)

GMC Sierra 1500
Photo: GMC Photo: GMC
Like the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, GMC gave the Sierra 1500 an evolutionary redesign for the 2027 model year. The exterior is new, and the updated interior is screen-intensive. The four available engines are a turbocharged four-cylinder, two new V8s, and a turbodiesel six-cylinder. The turbo four has been changed, and the V8s are next-generation small blocks. Trim options for the Sierra 1500 include Pro, Elevation, AT4, AT4X, Denali, and Denali Ultimate trims. Overall, the 2027 GMC Sierra 1500 exemplifies how pickup trucks like the F-150 and Ram 1500 keep getting more upscale. The off-road trims can handle tougher conditions, and luxury editions get luxury amenities that rival those of high-end SUVs. All this also means the new Sierra will cost more than the model it replaces.

Infiniti QX65
Photo: Infiniti Photo: Infiniti
The Infiniti QX65 is a coupelike, two-row version of the QX60 midsized SUV introduced for the 2027 model year. It features the same 268-horsepower, 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and nine-speed automatic as the QX60, but is available in all-wheel drive only. The dashboard looks just like the updated 2026 QX60’s, with dual 12.3-inch displays: one for the driver’s instrument cluster and one for the central infotainment touchscreen. Infiniti says they tuned the QX65’s powertrain more aggressively for better acceleration, but we expect the QX65 to follow the formula of previous QX60s we’ve tested as a comfortable, quiet vehicle with a suspension that prioritizes a soft ride over sharp handling.

Kia Seltos

Compared to its predecessor, the second-generation Seltos expands slightly in most dimensions, including adding a bit more elbow and cargo room. It is also adding to its list of amenities, with an interior that looks more inviting than some larger, more expensive models, and a long roster of comfort, convenience, and active safety technology. In addition to the traditional four-cylinder engines, the Seltos for the first time offers a hybrid powertrain. All-wheel drive remains optional. The 2.0-liter will be offered in LX, S, EX, and X-Line, while the 1.6-liter turbo will be available in X-Line trim only. The modern-looking interior is available with a wide, panoramic display comprising three screens. All told, the “entry-level” descriptor may no longer apply to Kia’s smallest and most affordable SUV.

Lexus NX

For 2027, the updated Lexus NX is only available as a hybrid or plug-in hybrid, setting it apart from a sea of gas-only compact luxury SUVs. The PHEV gets a new battery that promises more than 40 miles on a charge before the gas engine kicks in, and an upgraded all-wheel-drive system that engages in more situations than the prior setup. A new interior, which is almost identical to the Lexus ES, includes an easier-to-use touchscreen and widely spaced climate buttons. Buyers can opt for extras such as scent diffusers and unique hidden lighting accents. In addition to the powertrain changes and new interior, the Lexus NX gets a bunch of minor upgrades across the board that promise better handling and smoother acceleration. Lexus’ newest suite of active safety and adaptive driving assistance systems, called Lexus Safety System+ 4.0, now comes standard.

The Mercedes-Benz GLE was refreshed for 2027 with an updated engine lineup and high-tech features galore, including a now-standard trio of 12.3-inch screens that spans across the dashboard. Both a GLE Coupe with a raked fastback roof and a high-performance Mercedes-AMG version are available. Mercedes offers five different mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains for the GLE lineup, ranging from the 255-hp GLE 350 base model to the 577 hp Mercedes-AMG GLE 53e Hybrid. Ram 1500 REV
Photo: Ram Photo: Ram
The 1500 REV shares many familiar styling cues and features with the freshened Ram 1500, but its powertrain makes this version unique. The 1500 REV is an extended-range electric vehicle, meaning it uses its V6 engine to generate electricity via a 130-kW generator, rather than directly using the engine to move the vehicle. It uses a large 92-kWh battery pack to store the energy. The generator can supplement the battery when extra power is needed. Peak output is 647 horsepower. More importantly, Ram claims the REV has a 2,625-pound maximum payload capacity and 14,000-pound maximum tow capacity. The truck can be used as a home generator in the case of a power outage. The 1500 REV will be available with a hands-free driver assist system.

Scout Terra & Traveler
Photo: Scout Photo: Scout
The Scout Terra pickup truck and Scout Traveler SUV are prototypes of the first models to wear the Scout badge in 44 years, and they aim to mix new technology with what we think are the best kinds of old-school sensibilities. Scout is a division of Volkswagen focused on electric vehicles inspired by the 1970s International Scout 80 pickup truck and International Scout II SUV.
These rugged, retro EVs have a claimed 0-to-60-mph time of 3.5 seconds, a 7,000-pound tow capacity, and a 350-mile driving range. An optional “Harvester” version gets a gas-powered range extender for up to 500 miles of range. Scout owners will find real buttons and knobs for infotainment and climate control, traditional exterior door handles, and even an optional three-person front bench seat. Both Scout models are based on an all-new, rugged, body-on-frame design that’s not shared with other electric vehicles from Volkswagen and Audi. The automaker says that production will start in 2027 at Scout’s new factory in South Carolina.

Volkswagen Atlas
Photo: Volkswagen Photo: Volkswagen
The redesigned 2027 Atlas still comes with just one powertrain, a 282-hp, 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Front- and all-wheel drive are available. While the exterior looks familiar, with dual LED headlights running the width of the nose being the biggest change, the interior has undergone a more radical update. The slim, rectangular dashboard is dominated by a free-floating center display. The base model gets a 12.9-inch screen while all other trims get a 15-inch one. All models have a 10-inch digital gauge cluster. Seating for seven is standard, and the optional captain’s chairs cut that to six. The hands-on active driving assistance system is capable of performing lane changes. A hybrid version is planned, but won’t arrive until the midcycle refresh.
