Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

What Owners Say

Antilock system (ABS)

"Abs light came on, was "fixed" by Nissan through a $300 flushing of system. I found out late it would have been fixed most likely with a topping off of the fluid"

Anonymous, VA (2011 Nissan Altima S 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Calipers

"Calipers (Pads) contributing to glazing due to extreme heat"

Anonymous, FL (2011 Nissan Altima SR 3.5-L V6)

Premature brake wear

"brakes pads only last about 15,000 on front and 20M on rear"

Anonymous, PA (2011 Nissan Altima SR 3.5-L V6)

"Front brakes wore to metal at around 32,000 miles. Upon examination, the pads were absurdly small, something like 2 inches square. That's a lot of force applied to a small area. Cheap move on the part of Nissan, probably cheap materials too"

Mike E., CA (2011 Nissan Altima S 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"2011 Nissan Altima to replace 92 Honda Civic. Need to spend $1,200+ to fix breaks in Altima at 65,000 miles. Honda brakes lasted well over 150,000 miles before repair"

Anonymous, PA (2011 Nissan Altima SR 3.5-L V6)

"Live in south Florida. Rotors (Original) seriously glaze every year due to heat. only repair is to turn rotors"

Anonymous, FL (2011 Nissan Altima SR 3.5-L V6)

"Rotors are warped (probably due to me not checking lug nut torque after DEALER rotated tires.) Not enough metal to resurface, have to replace. Honda brakes can be resurfaced several times"

Anonymous, VA (2011 Nissan Altima S 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Excessive brake pad wear has resulted in needing front rotor replacement twice in the first 6 years we owned the vehicle. New pads are approximately 1 year old and are now squeaking again. Very unhappy."

"Stopped blowing cold air"

Anonymous, FL (2011 Nissan Altima S 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The electrical coil which signals the compressor to kick on failed. This is an internal part of the compressor, for some reason, and is not able to be replaced separately from the compressor. thus, the entire compressor had to ne replaced at a total cost of around $700.00 parts and labor. The car, having only 77,000 miles on it, is not old enough to experience this problem, in my opinion."

Anonymous, UT (2011 Nissan Altima S 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The previous owner lived in a coastal town where he had little or no use for air conditioning. When we got the car we noticed it didn't cool and asked him why to which he replied it broke but I don't use it so I never got it fixed. "My Altima was fine for the longest time, and then all of sudden in the past year when I am on the I-10, and go above a certain speed it began to shake, rattle, and squeak. I get it checked out and have to get all my bearings replaced. It helps a bit, but does not solve the problem completely. I checked to see if my car was under recall, as the recall seemed to be exactly the issue I was having with it just shaking, but my car wasn't one deemed to be an issue. Not sure what to do, since going to any body shop they tell me something I have never heard of before and can't be exactly sure if that is a legit issue or not. I do know bearings wear out, but I do not understand why it did not fix it completely as I got all the bearing replaced to just make sure that was the issue."

What Owners Say

Display screen freezes up

"The radio and its display do not respond to the controls intermittently. For example, the radio, when on, may not turn off. The volume may not respond to changes. Or, when off, the radio will not turn on. Perhaps the buttons that control channels will not work, but perhaps they will. The problem is probably in the push button, rotary knob that controls most functions"

Anonymous, FL (2011 Nissan Altima 2.5 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Display screen goes blank

"When the display screen went blank, I could no longer see what radio station I was listening to, whether it was AM or FM, etc. Could no longer see the clock time either"

Bob B., PA (2011 Nissan Altima 2.5 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Intermittently the display screen will be blank on start up of the vehicle, all functions still work, as far as I can tell, there is just no display"

Vince R., NC (2011 Nissan Altima SR 3.5-L V6)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"The voice activated system no longer works since the Nissan provided mapping update was purchased"

Richard B., CA (2011 Nissan Altima Hybrid 2.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Oftentimes, when I put in a location address the message pops up saying the location does not exist. The original software for GPS was installed incorrectly with quite a bit of missing data. I had an advocate work with me and Nissan Corp. to get it"

Anonymous, SC (2011 Nissan Altima 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Very bad programming. Makes significant errors. Some roads are not even in the system. Could not even direct me to Atlanta Airport. Makes me very, very angry-- even the new $175 update is still bad. I have asked for a refund, but Nissan says it"

Eugene W., FL (2011 Nissan Altima SR 3.5-L V6)
Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"When making or receiving a phone call neither person is able to understand what is being said. It sounds as though we are talking underwater-very muffled. No clarity at all. Everyone who has called me on the Bluetooth have had the same complaint-not"

"Stereo system kept resetting itself to the factory defaults (saved settings, stations, etc). Seems silly but when that happens about every other day, it's a huge annoyance. This involved a number of trips to the dealer. They asked me to replace the battery even though it was testing fine (no fix), replaced the head unit (which still had the problem), and then after another week of work i asked them to replace the head unit again. Apparently the first refurbisheded head unit had the same probl"

Anonymous, IL (2011 Nissan Altima S 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Stereo started resetting itself while off. Turned out there were two problems, one a defective wiring harness and the other a defect in the stereo. Annoyingly, they had to order three replacement head units to get a functioning one"

Mark N., IL (2011 Nissan Altima S 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The digital info dial periodically goes blank. radio still performs; use pre-set station button."

Anonymous, FL (2011 Nissan Altima S 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Software update fixes

"I had an issue where the check engine light came on. When I checked the code, it indicated that the Mass Air Flow sensor was not working. I cleaned it. No change. I replaced it. The light went out for a little while and then came back on. I took it to the dealer and it turned out there was a service bulletin that required a reprogramming of the computer. What was annoying, what that I was charged to diagnose the problem, and for the reprogramming, for a total of almost $300. I was going to write to Nissan to complain about having to pay so much to fix a software problem, but I never got around to it."

Walter W., SC (2011 Nissan Altima S 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

It takes days of dry weather to drain. I can try and move the rubber trim to get it to drain more but it does not help. I have to shake the door to really get most of the water out."
