The Frontier, with its aggressive styling and supercharged engine, tries to overcome with image what it lacks in substance. Even with supercharging, acceleration is no better than that of Ford's or Toyota's small pickups. Fuel economy is poor, and the Frontier even require's premium fuel. The ride is awful, handling is unresponsive, and the cabin is cramped and uncomfortable.

Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Fuel System

Check engine light, sensors (includes O2 or oxygen sensor), emission control devices (includes EGR), engine computer, engine computer, fuel cap, fuel gauge/sender, fuel injection system, fuel pump, fuel leaks, stalling or hesitation.

What Owners Say

Emission control devices (includes EGR)

"Service Engine consistently comes on, code P0400. Over the past 5 years, I've spent $1000s on "repairs", staggering my annual inspection in NY from August to December, only to have the light come back on for THE SAME REASON within a couple of months. Each year I have to borrow an ODB tester, reset the code, and randomly drive until the EGR is successfully tested by the system. Then, park the vehicle until I can get an inspection scheduled, and pray that it doesn't come back on driving to the inspection. But I can't afford to replace the vehicle and need a pickup from time to time. I can no longer afford Consumer Reports, in any manner, but even though I ask them to be stopped, I keep getting emails with links surveys and to things I CAN'T READ WITHOUT A SUBSCRIPTION, MAKING ME FEEL LIKE CRAP. You're Consumer Reports, for G*d's sake. Stop It."

Anonymous, (2000 Nissan Frontier Unsure 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Intake clogged up"

Anonymous, VA (2000 Nissan Frontier XE 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"It took 3 attempts to pass inspection in 2015. My registration renews in September, but due to inspection delays, it wasn't done until October. Each of the first two attempts cost about $150, and $25 for the final inspection. The vehicle had to be driven enough miles for the internal tests to be done. For the latest (2016) year's inspection, i dropped it off 10/1 and it did not pass inspection until 12/1. In this case, I feel like the fault code descriptions provided by Nissan provided insuffici"

Anonymous, NY (2000 Nissan Frontier 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Fuel pump

"truck motor would die after 2 or 3 miles, would not start for about 20 min, would run for 3 or 4 mim and die again. replaced fuel pump."

Anonymous, TN (2000 Nissan Frontier Unsure 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Sensors (includes O2 or oxygen sensor)

"Wasn't a big problem, just didn't respond at a stop very well, was a little hesitant and stalled only once in awhile.didn't get it fixed right away. It was the air flow meter, cost $465, labor and parts and tax."

Anonymous, CA (2000 Nissan Frontier XE 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Vehicle fails the state's emission test due to the failure of the oxygen sensor."

Anonymous, MD (2000 Nissan Frontier SE 3.3-L V6)

"failed the state emissions test. Replaced the two O2 sensors"

Anonymous, MD (2000 Nissan Frontier 3.3-L V6)

"NOX sensor was throwing codes. It was a very expensive replacement because so much needs to be removed to get at it. Some symptoms remain. It's not clear if the NOX was actually out of range or if it was because the sensor was giving faulty readings"

Christopher R., CA (2000 Nissan Frontier 3.3-L V6)

"Oil change place "inspected" the K&N air filter causing there to be to be oil and dirt ingested into the intake and destroy the mass air flow sensor"

Electric System

Alternator, starter, hybrid battery and related systems, regular battery, battery cables, engine harness, coil, ignition switch, electronic ignition, distributor or rotor failure, spark plugs and wires failure.

What Owners Say

Exterior lights (other than headlights)

"There was an electrical short in the feed to the tail lights - although brake lights continued to work. Although this did not make the truck non-functional. I was liable for a ticket if driving in rain or at night, both of which require vehicle lights be on in NY. The short also affected the dash lights. Fortunately, that was the indication I had to look for other issues, ringing the tail light issue. Cost about $200 for shop to troubleshoot and repair. According to shop, they see this a lot, as the wiring harness coupling that shorted lies on a place in the frame that allows water to collect in wet conditions."

Anonymous, (2000 Nissan Frontier Unsure 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Had to replace the entire right hand back light unit."

Harold S., OH (2000 Nissan Frontier 3.3-L V6)

"Intermitten power to indicators"

Anonymous, CA (2000 Nissan Frontier SE 3.3-L V6)

"There seems to be a gross electrical problem involving keyless entry, alarm, dashboard gauges. When it rains or when it is very hot outside, the dashboard shuts down as though you turned the ignition off, but the engine still runs. If I open the driver side door with the key, the alarm system wails. If the engine gets wet in the rain, the engine begins to missfire even though I installed new spark plugs and wires. It's a mess and we can't find the problem"

Anonymous, CA (2000 Nissan Frontier XE 3.3-L V6)

"Door locks, window buttons ( window stopped going up and down, first one side then the other). Blinker stopped working on driver side"

Richard L., CA (2000 Nissan Frontier SE 3.3-L V6)
Parking brake

"Twice in the last four years, the parking brake has failed. When it happens, there is no resistance when pulling the parking brake handle, and of course, no braking. Until it was fixed, had to carry wheel chocks around, as it is a 5-speed manual transmission, and the transmission would not reliably hold the vehicle in place when parked on an incline."

Anonymous, NY (2000 Nissan Frontier 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
