Nissan's flagship midsized sedan was redesigned for 2000. It's much improved, although the changes are evolutionary rather than radical. The car retains its unsophisticated platform. The ride is stiff. The seat and driving position have improved, as has the steering. Handling is secure and predictable. The powerful and refined V6 added 32 hp and makes the car very quick. The automatic transmission shifts very smoothly.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Owner Satisfaction with:

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"It is 17 years old and is still appealing enough that I get offers for it by mechanics who work on it."

David H., NC (2000 Nissan Maxima)

"Excellent vehicle. Smooth ride. Picks up fast."

Anonymous, NY (2000 Nissan Maxima)

"Smooth and powerful engine and drivetrain. Tight body/frame, even after 18 years."

Anonymous, CA (2000 Nissan Maxima)

"Ride is comfortable with good handling. Acceleration is excellent when needed."

Eileen K., CO (2000 Nissan Maxima)

"A bit to responsive to gas pedal."

Carl G., CA (2000 Nissan Maxima)

"tight turning is good but side mirrors are not wide enough angle"

JANET H., FL (2000 Nissan Maxima)

"The 222 hp manual V6 is good, but I wish it had a bit more kick. Should be a 250-260hp. The newer Maximas do increase this to approx 300 hp, but they have an automatic transmission, which just kills the driving experience."

Anonymous, CA (2000 Nissan Maxima)

"Acceleration is very good, road handling is very good with fine road feel."

ERICH B., CA (2000 Nissan Maxima)

"Great acceleration . I bought the car used and would not normally buy a 6 cylinder because the gas mileage is poor"

Anonymous, PA (2000 Nissan Maxima)

"Pretty good for a family sedan."

WAYNE B., CA (2000 Nissan Maxima)

"Has a racey aspect that makes it think it is a sports car"

Anonymous, WA (2000 Nissan Maxima)

"Like the V6 with 222 hp, and the car handles decently, but it could have used a bit more hp (255-275). The newest Maxima are over 300 hp but have manual only, which is sad. Only way to drive a car with more hp is with a stick."

Michael K., CA (2000 Nissan Maxima)

"The Maxima is still a very fast car. A mechanic recently commented on how strong the engine is. The car is agile, especially compared to the large cars on the road today"

Anonymous, ON (2000 Nissan Maxima)

"Acceleration excellent. Seat comfort mediocre"

Anonymous, MA (2000 Nissan Maxima)

"Engine is smooth and strong, does not use any oil even after 150,000 miles."

Anonymous, CA (2000 Nissan Maxima)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"Fantastic seats for my bad back. Best seats of any car I've had. Great A/C, Excellent ride."

ROBERT B., ON (2000 Nissan Maxima)

"seats are too low. Hard to get in and out."

Anonymous, AZ (2000 Nissan Maxima)

"Climate control does not extend to the rear seat. Other factors are good."

WAYNE B., CA (2000 Nissan Maxima)

"Seats are too short to provide enough leg support."

RICHARD C., IL (2000 Nissan Maxima)

"car is noisy. I new that before I bought it."

Anonymous, NC (2000 Nissan Maxima)

"Seats are very comfortable and drive good on the highway."

ELBERT B., OH (2000 Nissan Maxima)

"Seats are longer than many other cars. I like the extra leg support."

KIM S., TN (2000 Nissan Maxima)

"good ride for this size auto."

THOMAS D., GA (2000 Nissan Maxima)

"Excellent seats. smooth and quiet engine, lots of power."

Anonymous, CA (2000 Nissan Maxima)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"Bought this car new, back in January 2000. It's a bit of gas guzzler (20 city, 25-27 hwy), but apart from that it's great. Lots of power. The engine is a jewel, and the AT is also good, runs like a Swiss watch. And the seats - comfortable, and no/little wear after almost 18 years."

Anonymous, CA (2000 Nissan Maxima)

"The 2000 Nissan Maxima has been a good car and my wife uses it as her primary car. I wouldn't buy another Nissan - not because of the product but because of the service from the Nissan dealership. As an example in 2006 one of the injectors failed and the "check engine immediately" light came on. We contacted the dealership and were told to bring it in about 10 days later. We had planned a trip in 3 days and indicated this but they would not change the appointment date. I called the Toyota d"

A M., AB (2000 Nissan Maxima)

"For those who appreciate a family sedan that is also fun to drive, this is a good choice."

WAYNE B., CA (2000 Nissan Maxima)

"241000 miles and NO major problem, ever. Original clutch. STILL gets 26 mpg at 75 mph What's not to love?"

CARL F., MN (2000 Nissan Maxima)

"It is 16 years old and drives smoothly and gets me where I'm going economically and safely. I have no interest in changing cars."

LINA W., CO (2000 Nissan Maxima)

"very good value with my nissan maxima and it run very good but i will be replaceing it this year super find car!!!!!!!!!"

Anonymous, LA (2000 Nissan Maxima)

"great value, paid dealer invoice. very reliable because its still running."

THOMAS D., GA (2000 Nissan Maxima)

Styling

How it looks inside and out

What Owners Say

"it jest very nice looker, from the front to the back inside and out."

Anonymous, LA (2000 Nissan Maxima)

"This is answered over time, and it relates to the rust and deterioration around the rear wheel wells. It is quite serious and I am surprised at how somewhat quickly it has happened. We actually have an old 95 Olds that has NO apparent rust."

CARL A., OH (2000 Nissan Maxima)

"Sunroof is too small. A longer roof would allow for a larger sunroof."

RICHARD C., IL (2000 Nissan Maxima)
