Nissans flagship midsized sedan was redesigned and much improved for 2000. Its now among our top-rated family sedans. The Maximas ride is quiet though a little stiff, and its handling is secure. The SE model, with sporty pretensions, is stiffer. A powerful and refined 222-hp V6 provides impressive performance, though it requires premium fuel. The automatic shifts very smoothly, and the brakes work well.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Owner Satisfaction with:

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

NA

What Owners Say

“Great acceleration from the V6. Handling on corners is good except when going over bumps - car jumps.”

Anonymous, NY (2001 Nissan Maxima)

“Good acceleration and handling. Three of the spark plugs are very difficult to change, with their location between the engine and firewall. To keep the engine running smoothly with acceleration and handling, the spark plugs should be changed periodically.”

Anonymous, NM (2001 Nissan Maxima)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

NA

What Owners Say

“Comfortable seats, automatic climate control, relatively quiet and rides well for a car with 150,000 miles.”

Anonymous, VA (2001 Nissan Maxima)

“The air conditioning button has started to stick and at times does not operate correctly.”

Anonymous, WA (2001 Nissan Maxima)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

NA

What Owners Say

“The leather seats were not a good value. The leather is no more durable than fabric. It is so thin that it began to deteriorate and split within a few years.”

KURT H., CA (2001 Nissan Maxima)

“Driven the car for the past 13 years and only one serious problem which was the transmission that was repaired this year.”

JAMES R., SC (2001 Nissan Maxima)

Percentage of owners who would definitely purchase that same vehicle again. Owner-satisfaction Ratings are determined by the percentage of those who answered "definitely yes" to the question asked by the Consumer Reports Annual Auto Survey "Considering all factors (price, performance, reliability, comfort, enjoyment, etc.), would you get this car if you had to do it all over again?". If we don’t have sufficient data, a similar model might be used to form the owner-satisfaction score.
