The Maxima is a quick car, but it doesn't add much over the less costly Nissan Altima overall. While pleasant, it falls short in some ways. Handling is responsive, but at low speeds the steering is overly light. The car is quiet, and the ride is decent. But the new coupelike silhouette has compromised visibility, trunk room and rear-seat comfort.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Driving Experience

What Owners Say

"everyday Iget off and on express ways with a lot of truck traffic and acceleration of maxima keeps me safe."

Anonymous, IL (2011 Nissan Maxima)

"The CVT does not provide the best driving experience. It seems to "pop" and jerk under certain conditions. Also when accelerating, while it is smooth, feels unnatural."

BRIAN T., GA (2011 Nissan Maxima)

"Good acceleration but could improve on gas mileage."

S B., FL (2011 Nissan Maxima)

"Very fast. Acceleration unbelievable"

GREG K., PA (2011 Nissan Maxima)

"Accelerates great, very fun to drive"

Anonymous, GA (2011 Nissan Maxima)

"The constant velocity shifting is seamless and gives me lots of power to pass or climb hills. I live in the Rocky Mountains. There is no roaring when shifting like in the Subaru I test drove."

Anonymous, BC (2011 Nissan Maxima)

"better than average acceleration, braking; steering is responsive"

Anonymous, AZ (2011 Nissan Maxima)

"drive, acceleration and handling"

Anonymous, TN (2011 Nissan Maxima)

Stephen J., KY (2011 Nissan Maxima)

"GREAT ACCELERATION"

John T., GA (2011 Nissan Maxima)

"For a car with 170,000 miles on it, she still runs like a new car. Quick and responsive (not a 4dr SC like Nissan says) but very good for the size and weight of the vehicle. Just a great ride. Best car I have ever owned."

William S., AL (2011 Nissan Maxima)

"Quick. No lag in acceleration"

Anonymous, RI (2011 Nissan Maxima)

"Amazing acceleration, seamless auto shifting, perfect cruise control system."

Anonymous, BC (2011 Nissan Maxima)

"Very powerful V-6 and variable drive transmission provides lots of speed/power combinations. Very pronounced front end torque-steer under hard acceleration."

Steven W., NC (2011 Nissan Maxima)

"The power train is very strong with excellent quick acceleration. The suspension is tight with very responsive handling. There is some hesitation (over steer) when accelerating while making a turn that is hard to handle at times."

Anonymous, WA (2011 Nissan Maxima)

"Comfortable for 4 adults and accelerates and dirves like a sports car."

Anonymous, AZ (2011 Nissan Maxima)

"acceleration is great as is the handling"

Anonymous, OK (2011 Nissan Maxima)

"Excellent handling and acceleration. Still acts like a new car."

Anonymous, NY (2011 Nissan Maxima)

"The V6 provides plenty of acceleration for easy merge onto freeways and passing slower traffic. The car handles fairly well around corners and is steady at highway speeds. Handling characteristics are much better than your typical sedan."

Anonymous, WA (2011 Nissan Maxima)

"Quick acceleration and overall fast but it doesn't ride as smooth as my Ram 1500."

Anonymous, WV (2011 Nissan Maxima)

"Very peppy and satisfying acceleration and handling"

Anonymous, GA (2011 Nissan Maxima)

"Fine driving vehicle which is much less in cost form the other cars costing thousands more. Drives well, great pick up, and styling."

Richard K., NJ (2011 Nissan Maxima)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"Heated and ventilated front seats! Heated steering wheel! 10-way power driver seat, power front passenger seat, feeling the road enough for a little driving thrill w/o giving up too much smoothness in the ride"

ROBERT C., IA (2011 Nissan Maxima)

"very comfortable; good space for passengers; good trunk capacity and opening size without hinge intrusion"

Anonymous, AZ (2011 Nissan Maxima)

"Comfortable and easily programmable to enhance that comfort."

Anonymous, MA (2011 Nissan Maxima)

"OURSIDE ROAD NOISE"

CLARENCE T., OK (2011 Nissan Maxima)

"Heated steering wheel is great during our cold winters. It's a feature I would look for and want again. I drive the 4 door sports car and enjoy it's handling and response. One factor that will change my next vehicle is it's lowness. With hip replacement, I will appreciate a vehicle that is easier to get my 6'5" frame into. Probably an suv with enough front driving profile for my long legs."

ROGER K., NY (2011 Nissan Maxima)

"Seats do not have adequate side support. Road noise a little much"

LAZARO V., HI (2011 Nissan Maxima)

"Seats are very comfortable and body forming."

Anonymous, MN (2011 Nissan Maxima)

"Great pickup and response. Controls are easy to understand and read. Love the features and probably will purchase another when due."

RICHARD K., NJ (2011 Nissan Maxima)

"The ride is too stiff and firm for a "luxury " car."

Ed H., MI (2011 Nissan Maxima)

"front seat comfort is very good, number one complaint is its very noisy at highway speeds, ride is good"

Anonymous, BC (2011 Nissan Maxima)

"Great seats. Road feel but quiet."

Stephen J., KY (2011 Nissan Maxima)

"Smooth ride"

Anonymous, RI (2011 Nissan Maxima)

"VERY COMFORTABLE ,GREAT FOR LONG RIDES"

John T., GA (2011 Nissan Maxima)

"The driver's seat has good bolstering but after a few hours of driving my rear end gets sore."

Dave G., ON (2011 Nissan Maxima)

"Seats give my husband back pain though okay for me ROAD NOISE level is awful. Have to have audio very loud to hear over bad road noise. Voice control phone is pitiful “call Larry‿ brings up unrelated name-must manually pick Car Too low to ground, scrapes on driveway often"

Anonymous, SC (2011 Nissan Maxima)

"Maxima is much more comfortable on long rides. Ride is smooth and quite. Car has great acceleration."

Anonymous, NY (2011 Nissan Maxima)

"Seating is very comfortable. Many seat adjustments for comfort."

Frank F., NY (2011 Nissan Maxima)

"Seats are not as comfortable now (6 years old). Hard for older people to get in and out"

Anonymous, NY (2011 Nissan Maxima)

RICHARD K., NJ (2011 Nissan Maxima)

"Has many std features that are only std on more expensive cars, Reliable with very few repairs, all minor no major."

Anonymous, BC (2011 Nissan Maxima)

"Driven the car for 170,000 miles and finally had a major repair - the AC compressor failed. The Max is by all measurements the best car I have ever owned in 50 years of owning cars. Not to mention that it is fun to drive and reasonably easy on gas if you pay attention to your speed."

"running great"
