Producing an honest sports sedan has eluded Nissan for the last two decades. Unfortunately, the new Maxima still falls short of that promise. Although touted as a sporty four-door, the Maxima is nothing of the sort. Is it at least a convincingly luxurious large sedan? Sadly, the new Nissan falters as a haven of opulence, as well.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Owner Satisfaction with:

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"excellent powerful acceleration; handles well in all conditions."

Anonymous, TX (2016 Nissan Maxima)

"Acceleration is very, very strong and it handles very well for an entry level luxury car. There is also a "Sport" mode which firms up the steering and adjusts how the CVT transmission "shifts". This car is fun!"

LYLE Z., FL (2016 Nissan Maxima)

"Car doesn't hug the road compared to Aucra TL I had. Car has sports handling on it but same as normal handling."

Anonymous, OH (2016 Nissan Maxima)

"I like the CVT transmission, smooth and fast. Handles more nimbly than my 2011 Maxima that I traded in."

GEORGE G., MI (2016 Nissan Maxima)

"Drives very well. Excelleration is outstanding with the 300hp v6. Car handles very well."

Anonymous, NC (2016 Nissan Maxima)

"You never have to worry about not being at highway speed at the end of the on-ramp."

Arthur W., WA (2016 Nissan Maxima)

"Do not like the CV transmission. I do not trust it ability to be free of trouble and expense after the warranty is off. Also: The car had a great engine, but looses so much of it's power with that transmission. These cars need a 6 speed manual Transmission. It is supposed to be a "4 door sports car"! That it IS NOT! It is the take off from a dead stop that I hate. The thing changes gears so quickly that there is no "quick take off"! It gets into high gear almost before it goes thru an intersection! It is ok after you get about 60mph!! Hope that this us an understandable answer. It has been back to the dealer for a problem with this tran. before it had 10,000 miles on it. It has just been checked over again by the dealer just before it had 20,000 miles on it to make sure that it did not have another hidden problem!"

Anonymous, KY (2016 Nissan Maxima)

"Total performance"

Richard W., TX (2016 Nissan Maxima)

"Great acceleration which improes safety for passing and entering highway from a stop. Car handles very well at all speeds."

M W., PA (2016 Nissan Maxima)

"smooth and sporty ride great acceleration and very good gas mileage for size and engine."

Thomas M., MA (2016 Nissan Maxima)

"Very quick car, the CVT while generally annoying on many other vehicles, it seems to work well with preset ratios similar to a regular automatic. Acceleration is string and cornering is very confident."

Glen M., NS (2016 Nissan Maxima)

"Very responsive handling. Quick acceleration. Very smooth shifting."

Anonymous, NJ (2016 Nissan Maxima)

"Acceleration is excellent. I am always very comfortable with the handling. Always confident driving my Maxima."

Anonymous, IL (2016 Nissan Maxima)

"Beat almost any car fromthe trafic light"

Anonymous, VA (2016 Nissan Maxima)

Michael K., MA (2016 Nissan Maxima)

Anonymous, OH (2016 Nissan Maxima)

"the car is fast adrives great."

James D., CA (2016 Nissan Maxima)

"Sports car like acceleration and maneuverability in a sedan"

Anonymous, NY (2016 Nissan Maxima)

"Very fast, very smooth, very flat, very impressive. Lots of "verys" in this car. The engine and transmission are very nicely paired; I always get 28-30mpg on the highway, about 25 around town, which are both great for a 300hp engine."

Anonymous, UT (2016 Nissan Maxima)

"great pick up in emergencies and handles well"

Bernard F., IN (2016 Nissan Maxima)

"light car that likes to go when you push down on the accelerator"

Anonymous, AB (2016 Nissan Maxima)

"Acceleration is awesome"

James R., PA (2016 Nissan Maxima)

"good car"

Ralph S., PA (2016 Nissan Maxima)

"The acceleration and handling of the 2016 Nissan Maxima speaks volumes about the engineering behind the automobile. This is a 370-Z with four doors."

Howard A., TX (2016 Nissan Maxima)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"unable to have the automatic seat position memory work. Does not remember the seat positions. Have to manually change seat position when changing drivers. So far dealer has been unable to correct the problem."

HENRY S., VA (2016 Nissan Maxima)

"The heated steering wheel isn't a option on most comparable vehicles."

RON G., IL (2016 Nissan Maxima)

"The car is not quiet enough when driving"

MARK M., CA (2016 Nissan Maxima)

"Extremely comfortable to drive. Contoured seats provide excellent support."

Anonymous, NC (2016 Nissan Maxima)

"Car is somewhat noise, transmission seems to slip gears in low speeds, cross traffic alert system is a joke. It has been useful only twice in 10 months, and many cars have passed by in parking lots."

Anonymous, KY (2016 Nissan Maxima)

"the only problem with the front seats are that they are very low. I have to use a cushion in order to see over the hood. This is with the seat very far forward."

Anonymous, FL (2016 Nissan Maxima)

"Even though I got the loaded 2016 Maxima, the front passenger seat's height cannot be adjusted. For a shorter adult, that passenger feels like they are riding in a hole. This is our only complaint about the car."

W C., TX (2016 Nissan Maxima)

"Had car for less than 3 months and cool seats stopped working"

Anonymous, OH (2016 Nissan Maxima)

"Lumbar support feature and leg extension feature in driver's seat is fantastic. The headrest tips a bit too far forward for my comfort - I like to sit fairly upright, and the headrest makes that difficult."

SUSAN P., TX (2016 Nissan Maxima)

"The seats make you feel very secure while also not feeling confining. The front seats provide plenty of room for us (both over 6 feet and heavyset), yet curve enough around you to make you feel very safe while driving."

DARLENE L., AZ (2016 Nissan Maxima)

"Passenger seat very uncomfortable to low to the floor. Does not raise up like drivers side."

Anonymous, ME (2016 Nissan Maxima)

"reduce the amount of road noise while driving, could have been quieter"

JAMES B., VA (2016 Nissan Maxima)

"The comfort of the seats are noticeably improved over the 2010 Maxima we had prior to this model."

Arthur W., WA (2016 Nissan Maxima)

"I would like less road moise"

Anonymous, IL (2016 Nissan Maxima)

"TERRIBLE! The seats are so hard and lumpy they get uncomfortable quickly. We drove from Florida to Pennsylvania and back in this car 3 months after we purchased it. Never again, we'll take the Malibu. We were there for 3 weeks and did not look forward to the ride back home."

Alan D., FL (2016 Nissan Maxima)

"Excellent comfort of driver's seat and programmable feature for 2 drivers is great. Ride is comfortable and the sound level is excellent specially at highway speed.."

M W., PA (2016 Nissan Maxima)

"Seat does not retain memory once set."

Chris H., LA (2016 Nissan Maxima)

"has more rattles than a baby bed!"

Anonymous, AL (2016 Nissan Maxima)

"the seats are very good and the ride is comfortable"

James D., CA (2016 Nissan Maxima)

"Front seats are wonderful"

Anonymous, KS (2016 Nissan Maxima)

"I am 6' 5' and love the seats'. It gives kind of a hard ride but, I like that. As far as noise goes I really haven't noticed the noise level as loud, so I am happy with it."

Anonymous, MA (2016 Nissan Maxima)

"I love the seats, the only issue I have with this car is that is has a lot of road noise inside cabin. My 2005 Grand Prix is much quieter than this 2016"

Anonymous, IL (2016 Nissan Maxima)

"Height of passenger seat needs to be adjustable. (Super low for short passengers.)"

Cheryl M., OH (2016 Nissan Maxima)

"The passenger seat can NOT be raised. It is very low for a short person. The air bag could hit the passenger in the face in an accident. It was a very expensive car, raising the seat should have been included."

Anonymous, NC (2016 Nissan Maxima)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"I paid too much"

JOSEPH B., MA (2016 Nissan Maxima)

"price was a little high, i should have waited for sales incentives; performance is excellent."

Anonymous, TX (2016 Nissan Maxima)

"The value is extraordinary. You would pay thousands of dollars more for all these options on say a BMW for example."

Anonymous, BC (2016 Nissan Maxima)

"The car stickered for $35,000. It is not a big seller, so there were many incentives. My final cost was $28,000. This was a great price for a very nice vehicle."

Lyle Z., FL (2016 Nissan Maxima)

"Best quality to $ value on the market"

Anonymous, VA (2016 Nissan Maxima)

"I have the Platinum trim. It's very well equipped for the price, in fact that's one reason we bought it over an Infiniti or other brand. The electric steering column and seat (both move to help you get in and out) are a unique and very nice feature. Great stereo too. Very nice trim and everything's holding up well after 2 1/2 years."

Anonymous, UT (2016 Nissan Maxima)

"Great styling, 300 HP and gets 32MPH at 70 MPH, many advanced safety features included that are $10K more on premium cars."

Anonymous, FL (2016 Nissan Maxima)

Styling

How it looks inside and out

What Owners Say

"Styling was a big change in 2016 and it was all for the better. Outside is very unique and advanced compared to competition. Inside is a big step forward in electronics and highly adaptable by the driver."

RANDY U., TX (2016 Nissan Maxima)

"great styling compared to competitors"

Anonymous, AZ (2016 Nissan Maxima)

"I love the new styling. I have had over a dozen strangers come up to me & ask me what kind of car it was because they really liked the style & look of it."

Anonymous, BC (2016 Nissan Maxima)

"The 2016 redesign is fantastic! Truly a beautiful car in every way."

WILLIAM C., TN (2016 Nissan Maxima)

"Awesome looking car, pearl white, black glass roof/sunroof and black spoiler and awesome look from front. This is our 4th NISSAN Maxima since 1990. We have had more issues with this 2015 Maxima than the other 3 combined. Seems Nissan quality control has deteriarated compared to previous years and that's not good"

ROBERT N., WA (2016 Nissan Maxima)

"Nissan did a great job with the restyling of the 2016 Maxima. This vehicle definitely has a presence."

PAUL P., RI (2016 Nissan Maxima)

"Style is very innovative. Stands out from other vehicles."

NEAL H., OH (2016 Nissan Maxima)
