The Nissan Murano is a comfortable SUV with high interior quality and refinement. While it has lost some of its sportiness, Murano gained a quieter, more comfortable ride. Its powertrain delivers lively acceleration and relatively good fuel economy. The rear seat and cargo area are roomy. Rear visibility remains a problem, a victim of styling. A blind-spot detection/lane-departure warning system is available.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2009 Nissan Murano owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

What Owners Say

Antilock system (ABS)

"Replaced abs control module"

Eileen K., VA (2009 Nissan Murano SL 3.5-L V6)

"ABS actuator failed while driving resulting in loss of braking. Faulty valve, cost $2800 to repair"

Anita E., CA (2009 Nissan Murano LE 3.5-L V6)

"I think the ABS is part of brake failing"

Anonymous, CT (2009 Nissan Murano S 3.5-L V6)

"Brake pedal went to the floor when pressing brake after going over a bump. Had to get car to garage asap. Found out this was a known problem and complained to NHTSA."

Edward K., PA (2009 Nissan Murano LE 3.5-L V6)

"This is actually a known problem that the NTHSB has been investigating for about a year. When the ABS engages, especially when going over a bump, the brake pedal will sometimes go to the floor. It will still apply some breaking but not enough to stop in an emergency. Then you can pump the brakes back up with the pedal. In my case, I took it to a dealer and they claimed they couldn't find the issue. I also contacted Nissan who got involved and arranged for a tech to work on it. They told me that he reprogrammed the ABS, which initially caused all of the VDC, Slip and ABS lights to come on permanently, but then they fixed that and I haven't had a problem since. Considering that there have been hundreds of complaints about the same issue, I believe that they may have done a silent recall and actually replaced the ABS system."

Anonymous, KS (2009 Nissan Murano S 3.5-L V6)

"Brake peddle would slowly go to the floor."

Richard D., CT (2009 Nissan Murano S 3.5-L V6)

"Fluid contamination ABS unit failure"

Anonymous, CT (2009 Nissan Murano SL 3.5-L V6)

"replace ABS module in july 2017, in April 2018 Nissan issued a recall repair on ABS and subsequently refunded my 2017 replacement costs"

Terry W., IL (2009 Nissan Murano SL 3.5-L V6)

"ABS corrupted by failure of master cylinder and brake booster"

Andrew F., CA (2009 Nissan Murano SL 3.5-L V6)

"The dealer wanted over $3500 to fix it and I suggested I should buy a new vehicle. I emailed Nissan and thought that this was very dangerous vehicle to drive and there should be a recall on it. I was told that there was no recall. So I had it fixed at a private repair shop. Then several months after I had it fixed there was a recall and that I had to take it to the dealer and have it checked out to make sure the repair was fixed properly. It was repair properly and I was reimbursed for the repair.."

Anonymous, FL (2009 Nissan Murano LE 3.5-L V6)
Master cylinder

"had master cylinder & antilock replaced at cost of $1500"

Alan J., PA (2009 Nissan Murano SL 3.5-L V6)

"ABS and master cylinder went out during a hard stop"

Ronald M., TX (2009 Nissan Murano SL 3.5-L V6)

"Just failed. Braking only at very end of pedal range. Immediately better but failed again a few months later. MC replace at that time"

Anonymous, TX (2009 Nissan Murano SL 3.5-L V6)

"They replaced a master cylinder which apparently also had anti lock brake components in it"

Edward K., PA (2009 Nissan Murano LE 3.5-L V6)

"The master cylinder suddenly malfunctioned while I was driving. I was able to make it home. But since I had trouble braking, I had the car towed to a repair shop. The cost was $480 to have the vehicle repaired."

Ron-Jackie S., MO (2009 Nissan Murano LE 3.5-L V6)

"Due to moisture in the brake lines, brake fluid deteriorated, causing a failure of the master cylinder. Both the master cylinder and the ABS trigger switch had to be replaced."

Anonymous, OK (2009 Nissan Murano S 3.5-L V6)

"Replaced master cylinder, did not correct problems."

Richard D., CT (2009 Nissan Murano S 3.5-L V6)

"Would not hold pressure, causing soft braking"

Anonymous, TX (2009 Nissan Murano SL 3.5-L V6)

"Master Cylinder and Booster failed. Failure corrupted ABS system. Brakes failed without warning. A very dangerous problem. Greater than $4000 in repairs. Misdiagnosed by first of two dealerships"

Andrew F., CA (2009 Nissan Murano SL 3.5-L V6)

"Master Cylinder failed. Only a Nissan factory part, which is very expensive, will fit. Not after market replacement part was available"

Michael C., AL (2009 Nissan Murano 3.5-L V6)

R R., TX (2009 Nissan Murano SL 3.5-L V6)

"Brakes started squeaking at low speeds. Took car in and got new brakes installed. Within 60 days, squeaking started agin only much louder and at low speeds only. Took can back in and adjustments were made and within 30 days, squeaking started agai"

If the valves do not properly close, additional brake pedal travel may be required to stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
Summary:
Nissan of North America, Inc (Nissan) is recalling certain 2009 Murano vehicles. The valves within the ABS Hydraulic Control Units (HCU) may react with brake fluids containing specific corrosion preventative additives. This reaction may cause the valves to not close properly.
What should you do:
Nissan has notified owners, and dealers will flush the brake system with DOT 4 fluid. The HCU will then be tested to detect a possible stuck valve condition. If necessary, the HCU will be replaced, free of charge. The recall began February 7, 2019. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669.

IF THE TPMS LAMP IS DISREGARDED AND THE VEHICLE CONTINUES TO BE DRIVEN IN THIS CONDITION, THE TIRE WILL QUICKLY LOSE AIR PRESSURE AT A CONSISTENT RATE RESULTING IN A FLAT TIRE INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

THE MATERIAL IN THE NUT USED TO SECURE THE SENSOR-TRANSMITTER OF THE TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM (TPMS) MAY CORRODE AND POTENTIALLY CRACK IN AREAS WITH HEAVY CONCENTRATIONS OF ROAD SALT. IF THIS OCCURS, THE NUT MAY COME OUT OF THE SENSOR-TRANSMITTER AND THE TPMS LAMP WILL ILLUMINATE.
What should you do:
THE DEALER WILL REPLACE THE TPMS NUT WITH A NEW, MORE ROBUST NUT. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON OR BEFORE NOVEMBER 9, 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261 AND INFINITI AT 1-800-662-6200.
