Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

The striking, third-generation Nissan Murano serves up a decidedly premium interior feel. While the curvy, swoopy concept-car like styling impedes outward visibility, the Murano is easy to live with otherwise. Interior accommodations are generous, access is easy, and controls are mostly simple-to-use, including a well designed touchscreen infotainment system. The plush cabin is impressively finished and quiet.

Although the interior might scream "luxury," driving the Murano proves to be rather mundane. Cornering is uninvolving and devoid of sportiness, limited by overly light steering detracting from a driver's confidence on twisty roads. Murano ultimately proved secure at its emergency handling limits, but didn't shine. Likewise, ride comfort is decent, though it doesn't stand out.

Premature brake wear

"My car has been recalled for brakes. They worked on the problem. Now on recall again, never got parts. We had weak brakes repaired. Recall still not fixed. Next car will not be a Nissan, because of brake recalls. It is a very pretty car, but just to many brake recalls to buy another one."

Anonymous, (2015 Nissan Murano Platinum 3.5-L V6)

"Having to replace rear brake pads after 22k miles is totally unacceptable for a vehicle of the supposed quality of a Nissan Murano."

Anonymous, MA (2015 Nissan Murano Platinum 3.5-L V6)

"On a trip and without any indication of an issue, the brakes began grinding at 48,500 miles. The left rear pads were worn down to the point of metal on metal. Upon inspection in a repair shop, the rear pads and rotors needs to be replaced. With limited life remaining on the front brakes, we went ahead and had all fours rotors/pads replaced. I had expected the tell-tale squealing to begin as the pads wore down. Did not happen."

Mike M., SC (2015 Nissan Murano SL 3.5-L V6)

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Backup or other camera/sensors

"Collision avoidance system inoperative. Took 3 months and numerous visits of 4-5 days to finally diagnose and fix problem. dealer had to call in Corp people to finally fix. Same problem with passenger air bag off/on indicator"

Anonymous, CA (2015 Nissan Murano SL 3.5-L V6)
CD player

"CD skips occasionally"

James T., IL (2015 Nissan Murano SL 3.5-L V6)
Display screen freezes up

Anonymous, ON (2015 Nissan Murano SL 3.5-L V6)

"See previous response."

Anonymous, TX (2015 Nissan Murano Platinum 3.5-L V6)

"The infotainment screen can take 1-2 minutes after starting the car before it will accept any input (channel change, showing current station, etc.). Very annoying."

Anonymous, CA (2015 Nissan Murano Platinum 3.5-L V6)

"When starting the car, the system plays just one SXM channel for about 5 minutes, showing “no signal” on the screen. Can’t select or change Channels - then it suddenly is ok. Happens each time I start the vehicle even if it’s only off for a minute."

Stuart M., ON (2015 Nissan Murano SL 3.5-L V6)

"Sometimes the dial up or dialing process goes awry and the system will indicate unable to complete call and it reverts back to the audio/radio. Sometimes, it will go back to the dialing process by itself or if I attempt to redial # it can freeze up at times"

Frank M., IL (2015 Nissan Murano Platinum 3.5-L V6)

"NissanConnect system frequently locks up with no on-screen buttons responding. Eventually the system crashes and reboots itself. UNACCEPTABLE, NISSAN!!!"

Michael W., NY (2015 Nissan Murano SL 3.5-L V6)
Hardware replacement

"Cameras stopped working. Nissan replaced the entire information system ($4,000) at no charge even though it was out of warranty."

Anonymous, FL (2015 Nissan Murano SL 3.5-L V6)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"Navigation system is useless! It will take you in circles in a town. We quit using it, worthless!!!!!!"

Anonymous, (2015 Nissan Murano Platinum 3.5-L V6)

"Nissan maps are extremely out of date. for example. I purchased the car in 2016 and would expect an up to date map. The RELIANT stadium (where NFL team plays in Houston) it was renamed NRG Stadium in 2014, the old name is still being used. Also system has no feature to custom name a destination"

Anonymous, TX (2015 Nissan Murano SL 3.5-L V6)

"The map that came with the system is very old and inaccurate"

Donald N., IL (2015 Nissan Murano Platinum 3.5-L V6)
Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"Occasionally, I may have to manually go through the phone pairing process to have the system recognize my phone. I do have an older Samsung S2 phone but I've had this since before I purchased the Murano. I would say that the system is successful in phone pairing/identifying well over 95% of the time. I never really had much of a phone problem in my older, Nissan manufactured, 2011 Infiniti G37XS, so I'm surprised that occasionally the Murano has glitches"

Frank M., IL (2015 Nissan Murano Platinum 3.5-L V6)

"E-mail just started working regularly with the last software update to the car. Until then, e-mail would only work maybe once per month. No one at Nissan could figure out why. They blamed the phone, but obviously it wasn't, with it working with a new software update to the car. Also, the advertising for the Murano implied that there would be multiple apps. There is only google search, which works great when it works, which is about 90% of the time, but from time-to-time it won't connect"

Anonymous, NJ (2015 Nissan Murano Platinum 3.5-L V6)

"Phone pairing is intermittent. Sometimes the system pairs with the phone and sometimes it doesn't, and if it does not connect, it will not do so until the car is turned off and then back on again. This is VERY ANNOYING, and it has nothing to do with the phone, which pairs with my wife's Lexus RX350 as well as with other Bluetooth/WiFi sources EVERY TIME without fail. This NissanConnect system has had issues since the day I picked up the car, and it's very frustrating"

Michael W., NY (2015 Nissan Murano SL 3.5-L V6)
Radio

"For several months the stations would change when I turned the car off. A few other things occurred occasionally. Instead of replacing the radio unit my extended warranty required it to be removed and sent in to be repaired. I had to do without my radio, navigation system and phone connection for 6 weeks. It did come back in perfect shape."

Anonymous, OK (2015 Nissan Murano Platinum 3.5-L V6)

"Satellite portion failed. AM/FM work fine."

Anonymous, IL (2015 Nissan Murano SL 3.5-L V6)

"An intermittent issue still exists in which 1) present SXM icons don't always show, and 2) several minutes time is required for SXM radio to boot up. Sometimes it doesn't start with the most recently used station."

Anonymous, WI (2015 Nissan Murano Platinum 3.5-L V6)

"All of the problems I listed were part of the AV system module, which had to be completely replaced. They had to remove the dashboard to replace the navigation screen/radio and all the other components controlled by the computer. My vehicle was still under warrantee, so no cost to me."

Anonymous, TX (2015 Nissan Murano Platinum 3.5-L V6)

"Sirius XM Radio replaced as well as antenna. All under warranty."

Anonymous, FL (2015 Nissan Murano Platinum 3.5-L V6)

"Replaced Sirius radio and antennae. Car needs to travel about 1 mile before you can change stations."

Anonymous, FL (2015 Nissan Murano Platinum 3.5-L V6)

"siriusxm went out"

Harold P., LA (2015 Nissan Murano SL 3.5-L V6)
Software update fixes

"Tail lift would not operate. Dealer reprogrammed the system in 5 minutes. Cost was $112 plus environmental waste charge"

Anonymous, WI (2015 Nissan Murano Platinum 3.5-L V6)
Voice control commands

"Speech recognition is intermittent as far as 'recognition' of what is said goes. Some days it will recognize a word used often, other times it will not. Windows need to be closed and heat or A/C needs to be turned OFF to increase chances of speech being recognized"

Anonymous, ON (2015 Nissan Murano Platinum 3.5-L V6)

Transmission Minor

Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.

What Owners Say

Tom J., CA (2015 Nissan Murano Platinum 3.5-L V6)

"Rough Shifting between 20 and 30 mph"

Anonymous, GA (2015 Nissan Murano SV 3.5-L V6)

"The otherwise smooth CVT transmission regularly gets itself into too high a gear (lowest possible RPM) such that it lugs the engine at too low a RPM and causes droning from the engine."

Anonymous, CA (2015 Nissan Murano Platinum 3.5-L V6)

"It has the CVT so it doesn't actually shift however the transmission was jerky when acceleration and slowing down. They looked up the serial number and it was a faulty part but the dealer said it was a pretty major issue. Fixed under warranty"

Anonymous, MO (2015 Nissan Murano SL 3.5-L V6)
Slipping transmission

"I felt that the problem was probably my fault as I drove thru a car wash and shut the motor off. Upon starting the vehicle (have to put foot on brake & start vehicle, the process took too long and had to shut down carwash so I could start vehicle) Took to dealer they discovered there happened to be a recall for this problem! Solved my problem at no cost to me!!"

Anonymous, KS (2015 Nissan Murano Platinum 3.5-L V6)

"Had problems with shifting at low speed. Nissan dealt with it through the computer and some mechanical work. Was told that the next repair would be a new transmission if needed. That is certainly not the kind of news I want to hear for a car w 72000 miles and an excellent maintenance history."

Anonymous, OH (2015 Nissan Murano SL 3.5-L V6)

"I experienced a slight 'jugging' at low speeds a couple of times. Though the dealership could not replicate the problem, the on board computer had recorded the problem. The dealership replaced a part of the CVT promptly and remedied the problem."

Body Integrity

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, loose or cracked seals and/or weather-stripping, air and water leaks.

What Owners Say

Air or water leaks

"Water leaked Fromm sunroof drains to drivers side compartment to left of accelerator. Causing rug to be saturated and caused mold growth. Had to have entire carpeting taken out and replaced. Started nov 2018 and had repaired April 2019"

Anonymous, NY (2015 Nissan Murano SL 3.5-L V6)

"We've taken it in for service 3 times for water leaking from the roof this year. We're assuming it has something to do with the sunroof. Supposedly the drains keep getting plugged up because they are not large enough for debris to go through."

Anonymous, (2015 Nissan Murano SL 3.5-L V6)

"During a harder rainfall, my vehicle experiences water leaks, alongside the window column, that runs down into the dashboard."

Anonymous, GA (2015 Nissan Murano S 3.5-L V6)

"One of the most annoying things is that the driver seat squeaks over bumps. The dealer can't seem to find an issue, but they spray it and it stops for a few weeks. I am 250lbs, so maybe that is the issue, but it shouldn't make that much noise. It makes the car sound cheap"

Anonymous, UT (2015 Nissan Murano SL 3.5-L V6)

"On my way to work the engine lost power suddenly at a stop light and would not accelerate past 10 miles per hour. No warning lights appeared and the engine temp gauge looked normal (needle was a little past 1/4 mark). Dealer said the vehicle went into high fluid temperature protection mode due to the transmission fluid overheating. Transmission had to be rebuilt but it was covered under warranty."

Anonymous, VA (2015 Nissan Murano SL 3.5-L V6)

"The Murano developed a oil leak in the transmission. It too 4 trips to the Nissan Dealership to get it repaired correctly. They eventually rebuilt the transmission, and replaced the seals in the transfer case. Although we were given a loaner vehicle for free each time it went in for service, we were without our vehicle for over 5 weeks. the service department was terrible."

Steven S., MA (2015 Nissan Murano SL 3.5-L V6)

"Car would jerk at steady low speeds. Apparently a common problem for Murano CVT. Car still under 60000 drive train warranty sotransmission replaced at no cost to me. New loaner car also provided at no cost to me."

Anonymous, OH (2015 Nissan Murano SL 3.5-L V6)

Brenda B., CT (2015 Nissan Murano SL 3.5-L V6)

"At low speeds (15-20 heavy traffic or slight incline) the car would have a continuous series of bucking. I could repeat the symptoms almost will. The dealer (who was/is terrific) replaced the transmission while providing me a loaner vehicle"

"Passenger Air Bag Warning Light would indicate the Air Bag was OFF even though it was occupied by an adult."

Anonymous, TX (2015 Nissan Murano SL 3.5-L V6)

"Occasionally when both my spouse and I are riding in the Murano, the airbag warning light stays lit which indicates that the passenger's front airbag is not operational (as if there is no one in the passenger seat). The light stays on until the car comes to a complete stop and then goes out. I am not sure if this is just an issue with a defective warning light or an issue with the airbag itself. My dealership has been unable to help since they have said they need it to be malfunctioning when I bring the car in. Since the light malfunctions only occasionally (twice so far in April that we have noticed) and since the light goes out when the car comes to a stop, getting it into the dealership's hands is nearly impossible. My spouse has a blood disorder that puts her at much greater risk in the event of the passenger airbag not deploying in the event of an accident."

Robert C., IL (2015 Nissan Murano SL 3.5-L V6)

"Under warranty and replaced"

Timi H., GA (2015 Nissan Murano SL 3.5-L V6)

"System would shut off for no reason. Turned out to be the front sensor bracket was slightly bent out of alignment."

Anonymous, BC (2015 Nissan Murano Platinum 3.5-L V6)

"Radar sensor is, in my opinion, in a very poor location and prone to damage from a minor bumper strike. The bracket and assembly was bent during a very slight bump which disabled the cruise control entirely and required a $480 repair to replace the radar assembly, which wasn't covered under warranty. A very poor design."

John H., MA (2015 Nissan Murano Platinum 3.5-L V6)

"Passenger airbag warning light intermittently does not go on when an adult is sitting in the passenger seat. Sometimes, as directed, I turn off the vehicle and restart it in the hope that the airbag will go on."

Steven B., TN (2015 Nissan Murano Platinum 3.5-L V6)

"Since purchase of this car, I have had fit and finish defects and problems. Moldings coming loose, poor alignment of trim panels, etc. The latest defect was that the underside engine and transmission covers fell off while driving. It is a shame the fit and finish quality mars the overall ratings . ratings for this car. With only 21k miles, I am getting squeaks and interior rattles"

Tailgate, hatch or trunk

"The hatch door has been a problem with this car from the get go. It would keep locking up. There 5th dealer I took it too was finally able to fix it this year. Do because the hatch was mostly inoperable, the back seats, doors, vit used more than they should have, because we had to put items there instead of where they belonged."

Transfer case

"Purchased 1/2016. Two years later transfer case leaked, was repaired. Three months after that, leaked again, was repaired. The third time it leaked the transfer case was replaced. It has not leaked since, to this point. All repairs were under warranty, however if we had had to pay for the last one it would have been $3,500. Anonymous, CA (2015 Nissan Murano SL 3.5-L V6)

Returned to dealership, told new seal was creased when installed and would be replaced again under warranty. During repair a bolt was stripped and pieces were not recovered, necessitating five days in shop and replacement of the manifold assembly, as well as the drive shaft oil seal and front and rear transfer case seals.
