Nissan Pathfinder 2001 4-door SUV
Trim Shown: Sport Utility
The current Pathfinder has been around since 1996. Though it has unibody construction, it doesnt feel as contemporary as some newer SUVs. Cargo space and rear-seat accommodations are relatively skimpy. The ride is fairly comfortable, at least with a light load, and handling is secure. Changes for 2001 include a powerful new 3.5-liter V6, which helps make the Pathfinder quicker, quieter, and more refined. While most models have a part-time-only four-wheel-drive system, a selectable full-time system is now standard on the LE. Also new are better dashboard controls. Reliability continues to be excellent.

Safety Equipment

ABS standard. Side air bags available from 1999, standard from 2003. Head protection air bags available from 2003, standard from 2009. ESC available from 2003, standard from 2005.

Road Test

At this point, essentially unchanged since 1996, evolutionary improvements over the years made it quicker, quieter and more capable. But a tight cabin and a so-so ride remained significant drawbacks for this version of the Nissan SUV.

Highs

  • Powerful and refined V6, secure handling.

Lows

  • Ride, rear-seat and cargo space, requires premium fuel.
