The redesigned Pathfinder is now a car-based SUV with seating for seven. The third row is tight, and even the second row's posture is not ideal. Like the similar Infiniti QX60 (formerly JX), the passenger-side seat can be moved forward even with a child seat installed. The ride is comfortable enough, but handling lacks agility. Power comes from a 3.5-liter V6 coupled to a new continuously variable transmission. In our tests we got 18 mpg overall. Its towing capability of 5,000 pounds is competitive. The cabin is quiet and spacious, and the controls are fairly easy to master. A hybrid version with a 2.5-liter, supercharged four-cylinder is available. Fuel economy is estimated at 26 mpg combined.

Lows

  • Handling is cumbersome
  • Outward visibility is compromised

Best Version to Get

The SL trim is a logical choice since it comes well equipped and includes leather upholstery. But the Pathfinder's options pricing structure bundles desirable options in expensive packages. If you want a navigation system, for instance, you have to get either a $2,030 SL Tech package or the $3,3...
