Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Road Test

The long-running Pathfinder has transformed from a truck-based workhorse into a softer, gentler, car-based SUV with three rows and seven seats. An enlarged interior and easier access moves it closer to a family-friendly minivan substitute, which could be a good thing. But the Pathfinder is a little too much like a minivan: practical but really boring to drive and no longer capable of the off-road ruggedness of the old vehicle.

While it handles most of the everyday-driving basics pretty well, the Pathfinder doesn't stand out from the pack. It has a pretty good ride, decent power, and straightforward controls. The second row has a handy feature: It can slide forward to clear a path to the third row even when a child seat is installed in it. Kids will probably like the two-person third row just fine, but adults won't be comfortable there, so this car isn't a great choice for car-pooling grownups. Furthermore, mounting child seats can be a bit of a chore.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2017 Nissan Pathfinder owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Display screen freezes up

"Replaced entire unit"

Anonymous, ON (2017 Nissan Pathfinder 3.5-L V6)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"The entire radio, climate control, navigation system, CD player and USB port only work intermittently and sporadically. It's not just one thing, it's the entire system. Nissan can not get the parts to fix it."

Paul R., KY (2017 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum 3.5-L V6)
Hardware replacement

"did not show accurate information in app icons ( average mpg was 99. Replaced head. New one did not work. Then new one had a screen off one twice"

Anonymous, (2017 Nissan Pathfinder SL 3.5-L V6)

"Radio malfunctioned causing screen to freeze and go blank. Dealer replaced under warranty."

Anonymous, AZ (2017 Nissan Pathfinder SV 3.5-L V6)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"The in dash navigation system functions so poorly as to almost be useless. Location is frequently off by several blocks. While driving on an Interstate Highway it will periodically think the vehicle has left the highway and tell you to turn on some adjacent road. A total waste of money and about 25% of the performance of Google Maps on a smart phone."

Anonymous, IL (2017 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum 3.5-L V6)

"Our climate control, navigation, radio system went goofy. When the car was started, sometimes the heat would come on. Sometimes the radio would come on to a station hat we did not tune to,and more. We had it to five dealerships for at least a week and none could fix it. I contacted Nissan Corporate and they sent an engineer out to fix it. After replacing the entire system part by part over six weeks, it turns out to be a bad five dollar relay."

Paul, KY (2017 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum 3.5-L V6)

"It is by far the worst most inflexible system I have ever used. Most irritating is that it doesn't actually tell you how far to your next exit, but rather tells you how far to the next exit where you go straight and stay in the highway. Totally useless."

Anonymous, MA (2017 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum 3.5-L V6)

"doesn't find common specific addresses around city 25% of the time. Rural areas 90%. Doesn't give shortest way (without any road closers slow downs) GPS basically useless without waze type info. GPS has taken me through city streets (Montreal and chicago)instead of going on highways"

Anonymous, (2017 Nissan Pathfinder SL 3.5-L V6)
Software update fixes

"The XM weather function cut out constantly after several months an update was found and repaired by the Nissan Dealer."

Anonymous, MA (2017 Nissan Pathfinder SV 3.5-L V6)

Body Integrity

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, loose or cracked seals and/or weather-stripping, air and water leaks.

What Owners Say

Squeaks or rattles

"Rattles in door and behind touchscreen in dash"

Anonymous, IA (2017 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum 3.5-L V6)

"when i turn the vehicle left or right at times the front end squeaks. Also sounds from the rear something is loose but the mechanic says its fine (personal one not a dealership)"

Anonymous, FL (2017 Nissan Pathfinder Unsure 3.5-L V6)

"In dash and counsole"

Anonymous, LA (2017 Nissan Pathfinder SL 3.5-L V6)
Wind noise

"There is a draft on the passenger side front and the car is not as sound proof as you would expect in the newer models."

Leroy G., MD (2017 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum 3.5-L V6)

"Can hear a distinct air noise that the dealership cannot fix."

Anonymous, (2017 Nissan Pathfinder SL 3.5-L V6)

Engine Cooling

Radiator, cooling fan, antifreeze leaks, water pump, thermostat, overheating.

What Owners Say

Cooling fan

"The electric fan broke. The warranty covered the repair."

Anonymous, PA (2017 Nissan Pathfinder SL 3.5-L V6)

"broken bearing caused fan to run rough and make noise intermittently."

Anonymous, NC (2017 Nissan Pathfinder SV 3.5-L V6)

"There was a bearing failure in one of the radiator fans at about 66000 kms. It is a common failure and leads to a wobbly and noisy fan that can puncture the radiator. It started suddenly while backing out of the garage and intensified over the week until repaired. I chose to not drive the vehicle for a few days to avoid more damage, but it was functional."

Anonymous, ON (2017 Nissan Pathfinder SL 3.5-L V6)

Climate System

Blower (fan) motor, A/C compressor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate control, refrigerant leakage, electrical failure.

What Owners Say

A/C compressor

"Knocking sound like something was hitting something making you think the engine might fail."

Anonymous, GA (2017 Nissan Pathfinder SL 3.5-L V6)
Condenser

"A/C would not cool car. Discovered in May, 2019. Fixed by dealer under warrantee."

Anonymous, (2017 Nissan Pathfinder SL 3.5-L V6)
Refrigerant leaks

"The high pressure hose leaked out the refrigerant and oil on my drive way for no apparent reason. The repair was made under warranty. (32500 miles) I am starting to have doubts about the quality of this vehicle."

Anonymous, PA (2017 Nissan Pathfinder SL 3.5-L V6)

Transmission Minor

Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.

What Owners Say

Transmission sensor or solenoid

"I am assuming that solenoid is the same as the valve body. We experienced some slight CVT shudder two times and had Nissan look at it when the vehicle was in for regular service. They noticed CVT Shudder code and replaced the valve body. Has not been a problem since."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum 3.5-L V6)

"Transmission sensor completely failed after owning the vehicle for only 3 days"

Anonymous, NY (2017 Nissan Pathfinder SL 3.5-L V6)

Suspension

Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage (includes rack and pinion), power steering (pumps and hoses, leaks), wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension.

What Owners Say

Power steering pumps and hoses

"Hose for power steering broke"

Ted T., CA (2017 Nissan Pathfinder SV 3.5-L V6)
Shocks or struts

"There was a noise coming from the right rear. The shock and spring were replaced due to a leaking seal."

Franz B., TX (2017 Nissan Pathfinder SL 3.5-L V6)

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

What Owners Say

Antilock system (ABS)

"I got notified about a recall on the ABS system Made the appointment and was told that only some vehicles needed a part replaced, but if it did need it the part would be in hand. Of course mine needed the part, but no part was available and so an additional appointment was necessary. The first appointment took over an hour. The second over two hours. And ever since I get warning lights about the abs possibly not working and collision avoidance not operating."

Anonymous, MA (2017 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum 3.5-L V6)
Pulsation or vibration

"Brakes Pulsating started 7 months after the lease started."

Anonymous, CT (2017 Nissan Pathfinder Unsure 3.5-L V6)

Electric System

Alternator, starter, hybrid battery and related systems, regular battery, battery cables, engine harness, coil, ignition switch, electronic ignition, distributor or rotor failure, spark plugs and wires failure.

What Owners Say

Heated or cooled seats

"Passenger side heating element need to be replaced"

Anonymous, (2017 Nissan Pathfinder SL 3.5-L V6)
Tire pressure monitor

"We replaced TPM sensors in each of the tires (they had been removed before we bought the vehicle). The problem now seems to be that the main module is either forgetying them or failing. Either way, it resulys in an amber light on the dash, along with a caution message on the dash display."

Anonymous, (2017 Nissan Pathfinder SV 3.5-L V6)

Body Hardware

Power or manual windows, locks and latches, tailgate, hatch or trunk, doors or sliding doors, mirrors, seat controls, safety belts, sunroof, convertible top.

What Owners Say

Locks and latches

"The rear liftgate/release mechanism is extremely delicate. The button that 'releases' the liftgate is a rubber/plastic device that is not strong enough to actually lift the tailgate with. You must use one hand to apply lifting force, while gently pressuring the switch with the other hand. We went through 2 switches in the first 18 months until we figured out the need to use 2 hands. Nissan refused to cover replacement parts. Nothing in the manual deals with this issue. I guess they assume everyone will buy the upgraded package with the auto liftgate."

Anonymous, ON (2017 Nissan Pathfinder S 3.5-L V6)

Fuel System

Check engine light, sensors (includes O2 or oxygen sensor), emission control devices (includes EGR), engine computer, engine computer, fuel cap, fuel gauge/sender, fuel injection system, fuel pump, fuel leaks, stalling or hesitation.

What Owners Say

Sensors (includes O2 or oxygen sensor)

"The O2 sensor is apparently a problem with this vehicle and we actually went through two till we got one to work. Since the second replacement, it seems to be working fine."

Anonymous, (2017 Nissan Pathfinder SV 3.5-L V6)

Exhaust

Muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, leaks.

What Owners Say

Other/unsure

"On two separate occasions my forward collision dash indicator has come on for no apparent reason."

Anonymous, MD (2017 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum 3.5-L V6)
