Acceleration Acceleration Acceleration tests are conducted on a smooth, flat pavement straightaway at the track. Time, speed, and distance measurements are taken with a precise GPS-based device that’s hooked to a data-logging computer.
0 to 60 mph 0 to 60 mph (sec.) The time in seconds that a vehicle takes to reach 60 mph from a standstill with the engine idling.
Transmission Transmission Transmission performance is determined by shifting smoothness, response, shifter action, and clutch actuation for manual transmissions.
Fuel Economy Fuel Economy We perform our own fuel-economy tests, independent of the government's often-quoted EPA figures and the manufacturers' claims. Using a precise fuel-flow measuring device spliced into the fuel line, we run two separate circuits to represent city and highway consumption.
CR's Overall Mileage CR's Overall Mileage CR's overall mileage is a composite of measured fuel usage on a prescribed city course and highway cruising; and CR's 150-mile test trip of mixed driving, if tested. In recent road tests, we've discontinued the 150-mile trip test.

Owner Reports

Worse Better
Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Our subscribers provide great insights into their satisfaction by answering one simple question: If they had it to do all over again, would they definitely buy or lease the same model? In addition, respondents also rate their cars in six categories: driving experience, comfort, value, styling, audio, and climate systems. Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2012 Nissan Rogue owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Transmission Major

Transmission rebuild or replacement, torque converter, clutch replacement.

What Owners Say

Transmission rebuild or replacement

"Transmission went totally bad while on a trip. Had to have it towed to nearest dealer. Out of warranty so Nissan would only pay 1/2 of new transmission and had to stay overnight in hotel and rent a car for a week at own expense."

William B., NY (2012 Nissan Rogue S 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Transmission was making a noise. They told us there was a bad bearing that could only be fixed by replacing the transmission. Car was 3000 miles past warranty expiration, but they replaced transmission for $300 instead of the normal $3000. They said this was a common problem with this car."

Anonymous, NJ (2012 Nissan Rogue S 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The CVT transmission had always slipped and it's been that way since new. Originally, it was just a new experience, but overall worked well. This did lead to progressively worsening slippage until it failed complete to move the car. The replacement by Nissan was an updated transmission. In other words, the original design was bad enough that they don't even rebuild it, its a whole different transmission design. It's still a CVT, but it seems to have much less slippage than I remember when it was new. This is only the second car that I've ever bought that was new. It failed at just over 100,000 miles. I've had cars: Truimp Spitfire Mrk IV, 1963 VW Bug, VW Microbus, Ford Maverick, 1978 Buick Regal, 2 Ford E150 Vans, a Dodge 2500 Cummings Diesel, a 1994 Jeep Cherokee. I've only had a torque converter go bad in 1994 CHEVROLET Corsica. I have never transmission go bad on me and at 100,000 miles? and paying a dealership to service it since I bought it to boot!"

Michael C., IA (2012 Nissan Rogue SV 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"unusual engine noise when accelerating. On inspection it was detected that the Transmission was the cause and needed COMPLETE TRANSMISSION REPLACEMENT - $6000."

Anonymous, ON (2012 Nissan Rogue SV 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Check engine went on and then off a couple of times over the course of a month before major issue developed. Then one day, the light came on and the car would not accelerate past 90 km/hr on flat and would barely get up slight inclines. Made it to a dealership where they told us the transmission was fried and needed a full replacement"

Anonymous, ON (2012 Nissan Rogue SV 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"HAD TO REPLACE ENTIRE TRANSMISSION AFTER 35000 MILES"

Ricky P., PA (2012 Nissan Rogue SV 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

John H., CA (2012 Nissan Rogue SV 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"I bought my vehicle to three different places to try to figure out why I heard a rattle when I accelerate it. The third guy finally was able to figure out a bracket was loose On the muffler. He could tightness but he wasn't sure it was going to stay tightened. But at least we knew where the rattle was coming from now. The dealer told me that the rattle was my catalytic converter cover. They tightened it at the rattle never went away."
