2015 Ram 1500 Reliability - Consumer Reports
Surprisingly luxurious and refined, this version of the Ram pickup truck remains fully capable of doing dirty work when duty calls. A unique coil-spring rear suspension gives it a smooth ride and the interior is whisper-quiet. Continued interior and powertrain improvements make the Ram a particularly well-rounded choice, and it was the first truck in its class to offer a diesel.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2015 Ram 1500 owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Fuel System

Check engine light, sensors (includes O2 or oxygen sensor), emission control devices (includes EGR), engine computer, engine computer, fuel cap, fuel gauge/sender, fuel injection system, fuel pump, fuel leaks, stalling or hesitation.

What Owners Say

Emission control devices (includes EGR)

"The diesel exhaust particulate filter plugged because the auto-regeneration system failed. The problem rendered the truck undrivable. It is still waiting for the replacement part, expected to be 5 + weeks."

Frank C., VA (2015 Ram 1500 Big Horn 3.0-L V6 diesel)

"DEF injection pump replaced."

Anonymous, QC (2015 Ram 1500 Tradesman 3.0-L V6 diesel)

"The truck has the 3-liter diesel. Its exhaust system is complex with multiple treatment stages. I have experienced continuous failures of individual components within the system, effectively rendering the vehicle useless to me. A class-action lawsuit was successfully brought against FCA, requiring all owners to receive an ECM update and a payment of $3075. I received both and the truck still lacks dependability."

Frank C., VA (2015 Ram 1500 Big Horn 3.0-L V6 diesel)

"apparently the emission device was not working as indicated when I purchased the truck"

Anonymous, TX (2015 Ram 1500 Lone Star 3.0-L V6 diesel)

"December, 2019. Total shutdown while traveling. Was towed to nearby dealership. Truck returned to me end of February."

Anonymous, LA (2015 Ram 1500 Laramie 3.0-L V6 diesel)

"Slow Leak light on. Not fixed yet"

Anonymous, TN (2015 Ram 1500 SLT 5.7-L V8)

"The fuel system leak detection pump was intermittently sending false alarms, particularly with changes in altitude. I was able to replace the $25 part myself in 10 minutes and no tools. Thanks to YouTube contributors."

Anonymous, TX (2015 Ram 1500 Lone Star 5.7-L V8)

"Update from Ram to fix emissions caused my avg mpg to drop by 3mpg. Was told it would not create loss in fuel economy. It absolutely does not get the same mpg since update."

Anonymous, VA (2015 Ram 1500 Laramie 3.0-L V6 diesel)

"Check engine light keeps going on. Dealer says emmissions system is not completely regenerating/fouling a sensor."

Anonymous, WA (2015 Ram 1500 Laramie 3.0-L V6 diesel)

"The EGR was recalled along with the EPA emissions recall. But, along the way it frequently popped up the "check engine" light with a DPF full code. The recalls have been taken care of but we are still nervous about the DPF going out on us. And, we do not trust the EGR since this will be the third one on our truck."

Anonymous, CA (2015 Ram 1500 Big Horn 3.0-L V6 diesel)

"Components under recall and software change degraded drivability and mileage"

Fuel cap

"We replaced the gas cap and it didn't turn off that sensor."

Carrie S., GA (2015 Ram 1500 5.7-L V8)

"Check engine light with check fuel cap. Replaced fuel cap, but did not correct. Needed to have dealer replace two items related to fuel tank."

Anonymous, FL (2015 Ram 1500 Big Horn 5.7-L V8)

"Engine code for EVAP SYSTEM FAILURE at 30000 miles, caused remote start function to be disabled. Aftermarket fuel cap no help, dealer fuel cap working so far but I'm not confident this is the corrective action yet. Still ongoing."

Anonymous, WA (2015 Ram 1500 Express 5.7-L V8)
Fuel gauge/sender

"Fuel gauge sensor started having intermittent failure, then total failure requiring replacement."

Anonymous, MO (2015 Ram 1500 Big Horn 5.7-L V8)
Fuel injection system

"Injectors were clogged and had to be sent off to be cleaned. One had to be replaced. I was told it was due to dirty fuel but I had been changing the fuel filter as often as the dealer recommended. Because I had been doing that Chrysler covered the cost. Total down time was 5 weeks."

David R., PA (2015 Ram 1500 Laramie 3.0-L V6 diesel)

"Fuel pressure sensor malfunction"

Anonymous, OR (2015 Ram 1500 Laramie 5.7-L V8)

"Multiple, recurrent problems with fuel injectors, ultimately requiring replacement of injectors. Sold vehicle because of this problem"

Anonymous, PA (2015 Ram 1500 Laramie 3.0-L V6 diesel)

"It took several tries and was a nightmare I've been to five different dealerships and one of them even told me it was a lemon and that I should just dump it and nobody was going to fix it finally a dealer replaced all the fuel injection system and all the lines but before that they were blaming me and saying that I was contaminating the fuels"

"Exhaust Gas Temp Gauge failed."

Anonymous, IA (2015 Ram 1500 Big Horn 3.0-L V6 diesel)

"I have had it to the dealer 2 times and neither time were they able to find the problem."

Fred S., MI (2015 Ram 1500 Express 5.7-L V8)

"A defective sensor indicated reduced turbocharger output which caused the computer to switch to a reduced power mode. I could limp along but towing the trailer was almost impossible. Replacing the sensor cleared the issue."

David R., PA (2015 Ram 1500 Laramie 3.0-L V6 diesel)

"Problem started within a month of purchase and went on for three years. Light came on, I was told a sensor wasn’t working correctly and it was replaced. After talking with their corporate office they told me what to do. I forced the local shop to contacts corporate and they had to re wire the sensor. Very angry after over 10 trips to the dealer even though no costs incurred- I sure wasted a lot of time. Also irritating the dealer didn’t offer to contact corporate."

Anonymous, CA (2015 Ram 1500 Big Horn 5.7-L V8)

"Check Engine light on, retreived DTS & found code P0456 and P0411 Evap Purge Performance. Dealer replace Evap Purge Solenoid & retest all good. Under warranty no charge"

"Particulate sensor in emission control failed, very expensive repair"

"recalled"

Anonymous, VA (2015 Ram 1500 Sport 5.7-L V8)

"backup camera only works sporadically. technicians struggled to figure out why it doesn't work. they think a whole new display system will fix it ($2500). I don't need a backup camera that bad."

Display screen goes blank

"Several times the screen was blank on startup but recovered after driving a few hundred yards. As long as the screen was blank, I could not turn on the a/c or fan, using the physical controls, if I remember correctly. This problem was recurring in the sense that it happened multiple times. I could not MAKE it recur to show a service technician."

Larry W., CA (2015 Ram 1500 Laramie 3.0-L V6 diesel)

In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"not accurate off by 100 miles sometimes, and won't open sometimes....phone needs service says the screen but works, back up sensors and front sensor don't work...."

Larry W., CA (2015 Ram 1500 Laramie 3.0-L V6 diesel)

"GPS program was outdated when installed. My son purchased a house in Pittsburgh, PA that was constructed in 2012. The development and streets in it are not shown in the GPS system. I purchased a 2015 madel so one would expect to have an up to date GPS navigation program. Calls to try to remedy the problem get nothing by the run around. I am told that I can fix the problem with a $149.00 upgrade. This is NOT my fault. RAM and/or Garmin sold me an obsolete program then want money to ugrade it. How unethical!"

Raymond K., PA (2015 Ram 1500 Big Horn 5.7-L V8)

"says I am going North when traveling south, shows on the map places on the highway that I do not know where they are."

Larry W., CA (2015 Ram 1500 Laramie 3.0-L V6 diesel)

"Purchased Updates naps from U-Connect a year ago. First problem wrong map udate sent. They replaced with the correct update and problems started. Installed with teck support and lost color on gps and incorrect speed announcement. Chrysler advised me that my vehicle was out of warnity and they do not support that update. Our dealer has not got a answer yet. Nearly a year later and we can not get the GPS system fixed because of their incorrect update."

Anonymous, VA (2015 Ram 1500 Unsure 3.0-L V6 diesel)

Anonymous, NJ (2015 Ram 1500 Unsure 5.7-L V8)

"I've owned three Ram 1500 vehicles since 2005. Overall they are very good, but for some reason water leaks into the headliner. My 2009 would hold water in the headliner during heavy rains. When I would drive the vehicle water would cascade out of the headliner into the passenger compartment. I checked the drain holes for debris but never found any. Just this week while cleaning my 2015, I happened to look up at the headliner over the back seat. I found water stains on the liner. I never leave my windows or moonroof open when I exit the vehicle, regardless of the weather. For that reason I know the moisture did not come from my negligence. I really like my Ram but may not buy another for this reason."
