2016 Ram 1500 Reliability - Consumer Reports
Surprisingly luxurious and refined, the Ram remains fully capable of doing dirty work when duty calls. A unique coil-spring rear suspension gives it a smooth ride and the interior is whisper-quiet. Continued interior and powertrain improvements make the Ram a particularly well-rounded choice, and it's lately become the first truck in its class to offer a diesel.

James B., CA (2016 Ram 1500 Laramie 3.0-L V6 diesel)

"The truck has a problem with “sensors” per FCA. These sensors have been replaced three times in less than three years, but FCA states the sensors are faulty all three times. The mechanic believes the turbo for the engine is inadequate and causes buildup that burns he sensors out. This is an ecodiesel engine and it is totally junk."

What Owners Say

Air or water leaks

"Water leaks from the rear window down into the interior since new"

Edward L., NY (2016 Ram 1500 Express 5.7-L V8)

"Drivers side door was misaligned at manufacture had wind noise that got worse over time. Went through a car wash (no problem previously in car washes) and had a massive leak through the top and front of the weather seal. Went to the dealer and they had a specialist to realign the door. I assume they had a lot of these seeing they had an individual specializing in realigning doors. Makes you wonder about quality control on the production line."

In-car Electronics

What Owners Say

Backup or other camera/sensors

"After 2 years of use, the back up camera leaked water internally and fogged. Common problem seen on postings."

Anonymous, CO (2016 Ram 1500 Sport 5.7-L V8)

"Every couple months it stops working. If you put I revers screen goes all fuzzy. Warranty work required and vehicle is at the dealer for whole day again"

Anonymous, (2016 Ram 1500 Unsure 5.7-L V8)

"Back up camera pixilates when in reverse, intermittent problem. Only happens 2-3 times a day, mechanic cannot duplicate problem."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Ram 1500 Laramie 3.0-L V6 diesel)
Display screen freezes up

"These are all the same problem. The display would freeze up and then sometimes to blank. Once that happened, you could not see the backup camera or change anything on the radio other than the volume. Dealer had to replace the whole radio, with a "remanufactured" unit. That one failed the same way within months, replaced under warranty from the first replacement."

Anonymous, MD (2016 Ram 1500 Unsure 5.7-L V8)

"Display screen would either turn solid green or scramble the picture. Dealer was able to make repair."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Ram 1500 Laramie 3.0-L V6 diesel)

Anonymous, CA (2016 Ram 1500 Laramie 3.0-L V6 diesel)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"The radios and gps systems are a piece of junk. The radio has been a pain since I purchased the vehicle. It no longer receives Sirius radio and the GPS will take you on the craziest route and miss your destination by miles."

Anonymous, TX (2016 Ram 1500 Big Horn 5.7-L V8)

"Every time you get in the vehicle, it pairs to your phone and then starts playing music. There's no setting to stop it on the phone or on the infotainment system. It just does it. We spoke with someone from Chrysler's customer support team, and all they had to say was "Why wouldn't you want it to play music?" Absolutely mind blowing. There are an infinite number of reasons why someone at some time wouldn't want their vehicle to decide what music to play (because it's completely random, as far as I can tell, what it will start playing) and when to play it for them. As a living, breathing, thinking person, I think I'm perfectly qualified to decide all of that for myself and, be able to execute it without any trouble."

Anonymous, (2016 Ram 1500 Lone Star 5.7-L V8)

"The Uconnect interface for linking Internet radio apps (Pandora, Slacker, iHeart Radio) periodically looses it connection. Requires to re-log into Uconnect to re-establish connection so the apps work. Also when the Smartphone sleeps the music stops streaming until the phone is re-awaken."

Craig W., MD (2016 Ram 1500 Big Horn 5.7-L V8)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"the navigation system could not retain memory and did not update the current location and sent me directions to my destination based off of another location"

Chris S., OH (2016 Ram 1500 Laramie 5.7-L V8)

"OCCASIONALLY THE SCREEN BLACKS OUT AND THE NAV SYSTEM IS TOTALLY INCORRECT"

Anonymous, NH (2016 Ram 1500 Laramie 5.7-L V8)
Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"Neither of my phones would connect to the in-car radio. When i had the GPS replaced, that seemed to have fixed the problem. The dealer stated there was a problem with the hard drive retaining its memory. The entire radio was replaced"

Chris S., OH (2016 Ram 1500 Laramie 5.7-L V8)

"The vehicle looses pairing with my Samsung Galaxy. This has happened 4-6 times. I've asked both Verizon and Dodge to help resolve the problem. Although it seems to work for a while, it suddenly stops and the steps I personally take on the phone and in the vehicle to resolve don't always work."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Ram 1500 3.0-L V6 diesel)
Radio

"My vehicle's radio system is Sirius satellite ready so I purchased a subscription through Sirius in order to use their service. The problem I have is that from the day I began using the service, anytime I am listening to a satellite radio station, the radio cuts out all the time and I'll get a message that says acquiring signal. This occurs Everytime I drive my vehicle. I have yet to experience one drive without signal drop."

Anonymous, NV (2016 Ram 1500 Tradesman 3.0-L V6 diesel)
Routine software updates

Electric System

Alternator, starter, hybrid battery and related systems, regular battery, battery cables, engine harness, coil, ignition switch, electronic ignition, distributor or rotor failure, spark plugs and wires failure.

What Owners Say

Body control module

"The main symptom was the sudden malfunction of the wipers -- in a downpour, of course! The apparent cause was 'wear and tear', but the truck seems kind of young for that. Even so, I've had no other major problems, so can't complain too much."

Anonymous, MA (2016 Ram 1500 Express 3.6-L V6)

"Driver side downward facing courtesy light on side mirror stopped working. Was fixed one stop dealership."

Kevin L., MN (2016 Ram 1500 Sport 5.7-L V8)

"The fog light module was defective when I took delivery of the vehicle. The parking sensors, both front and rear were also not working. Still under factory warranty, I took it to a RAM dealership for repair of the fog lights, the parking sensors and an engine oil leak. The service department could not diagnose nor fix the oil leak (discussed separately). They did fix the fog lights and, eventually the parking sensors. They also painted the sensors the wrong color which, according to them, required three more days in the paint shop. Finally, I had consider problems contacting my service advisor (they had caller ID) so I had to revert to going there for status updates. I began to suspect he was just lying to me and proved it. The service advisor told me to my face that the technician was working on my truck when I arrived and it should be done tomorrow. Not believing him on either point, I walked outside to the parking area for vehicles in for service and, of course, my truck was sitting in the lot in the same spot where it was three days earlier. Between these minor electrical problems which were corrected and the oil leak that was not corrected by this dealer, my truck was in there three weeks. Incompetence impounded by lying. I will not be back there."

What Owners Say

Normal routine brake wear

Anonymous, MA (2016 Ram 1500 Express 3.6-L V6)
Parking brake

I took it in for service, they replaced the brake on my warranty I purchased. It still hung up and squealed, they ended up taking rust off a couple parts. So basically They used my warranty and it wasn't the real problem."

Anonymous, AB (2016 Ram 1500 Laramie 3.0-L V6 diesel)

"The right front side of the vehicle sat to low. When the dealer re-charged the system the issue was corrected but a day after, the condition re-appeared. It took 2 more trips to the dealer before they discovered a slow-leaking air line. The problem was finally solved."

Gary G., NY (2016 Ram 1500 Laramie 5.7-L V8)

"In cold weather the air suspension controller went defective. Also after repair, when cold the main fuse blows."

Richard N., WI (2016 Ram 1500 Laramie 3.0-L V6 diesel)

"Air suspension uses a compressor that draws ambient air, moisture forms and in very cold weather it will not operate, causing a very hard ride. Once weather is warmer doesnt happen. Dealer says nothing they can do. What they need is a dryer on the comprssor outlet"

Richard B., ON (2016 Ram 1500 Laramie 3.0-L V6 diesel)

"The big problem is 9 repeat trips to two dealers and they could no fix the problem. Sad when the maker of a product can't repair it. I had to pay for repair for broken wire that stoped the transmission from shifting the day after I got it home. Highway driving city streets"

Dennis R., WY (2016 Ram 1500 Tradesman 3.6-L V6)

Drive System

Driveshaft or axle, CV joint, differential, transfer case, 4WD/AWD components, driveline vibration, traction control, electronic stability control (ESC), electrical failure.

What Owners Say

4WD/AWD components

"A wheel speed sensor failed which caused loss of cruise control and every AWD/4-wheel drive function. I really needed AWD/4-wheel on a trip to rural NY during heavy snows."

Gary G., NY (2016 Ram 1500 Laramie 5.7-L V8)
Driveline vibration

"Dealer balanced the tires, then replaced the tires, then replaced the drive shafts. Dealer also swapped tires and wheels from a known good truck. None of this fixed the problem. I am in the process of taking them to Lemon Law as the dealer has had the truck three times for a total of about three weeks and the truck still has a vibration problem"

Ralph R., FL (2016 Ram 1500 Big Horn 5.7-L V8)
Electrical failure

"Transmission in this model has more electrical/electronic control than in previous 2009 Ram 1500 I owned. '09 ram had a better control with a mechanical lever engagement. The newer control on this 2016 Ram often won't allow the the truck to move when Drive or Reverse is engaged. When this happens, I need to set the control back in Park, slam the door, & then reengage Drive or Reverse. Newer trucks should be more user-friendly, not less."

"Acute undiagnosed total shut down of engine/systems resulting in threat to life and property. It is impossible to predict when/what circumstances the engine shuts down. It has shut down several times in high speed San Diego traffic. It has shut down idling in the driveway...... (huge frustration) Fiat Chrysler has not been forth coming or made a good faith effort to repair or replace the vehicle. It is possible this problem exists in other vehicles. However Fiat Chrysler is making very aggressive attempts to squash any reports and deny any liability."

Anonymous, FL (2016 Ram 1500 Express 5.7-L V8)
Traction control

"Traction control sensor will illuminate and warning appears on screen to inspect traction control. The warning light will then go out on its own"

What Owners Say

Cylinder head

"Check engine light indicated a failed glow plug. Techs could not replace so had to replace head, glow plug and electronic control module.2 weeks without truck."

W S., AB (2016 Ram 1500 Laramie 3.0-L V6 diesel)
Engine rebuild or replacement

"Engine had small ticking, sounded like an injector blocked. Oneday it got worse and sounded like a tractor. So went to go get injector cleaner and it suddenly went clunk. It eventually started and made it another mile and then seized. Turns out the rod cap on one piston came loose and eventually threw a rod in the side of the block. After discussing with dealer, chrysler replaced the ecodiesel engine for free and i had to pay 4k for labour to install."

Anonymous, TX (2016 Ram 1500 Laramie 5.7-L V8)
Refrigerant leaks

"The vehicle uses non-standard refrigerant and is not serviceable except by the dealership or specialty shops that have the very specialized tools. The refrigerant apparently will condense within the system after a certain amount of time and has to be flushed and recharged or else cooling performance continues to degrade over time and you also risk damage to the system. Our truck had a coolant leak that was apparently easy to find, but we still had to pay over $1200 in coolant, diagnosis, and repair whereas we would have spent half of that or so to get the exact same service done on a vehicle with standard coolant."

Anonymous, (2016 Ram 1500 Lone Star 5.7-L V8)

Engine Minor

Accessory belts and pulleys, engine computer, engine mounts, engine knock or ping, oil leaks.

What Owners Say

Difficult to fill up gas tank

"Engine would not start after I filled up tank."

Robert A., NC (2016 Ram 1500 Laramie 5.7-L V8)
Engine computer

"I have an EcoDiesel that was a part of a nation wide recall to update the computer program. Since the program has been updated the truck has experienced the following issues: Issue 1: Fuel mileage. I have tracked my fuel mileage every tank since the truck was new. I consistently averaged 25-26 mpg on interstate running 75-80 mph; but after update the best I have done is 23 mpg with the average being between 21-22.5 mpg. The around town mileage is about the same at around 19 mpg. Issue 2: Cold start up accelerator pedal lag. On cold start, you can count to seven sometimes before the truck will go, with the pedal to the floor. I have been almost hit three times. To safely pull out, turn or merge, the distance needs to be 2 to 3 times as much as it needed before. This is by far the most upsetting issue to me! It is outright dangerous! The truck will not go even though the accelerator pedal is pushed all the way to the floor. When it finally does go (after about 3-4 sec) the tires will spin and if the roads are wet it cause the back end of the truck to slide into other lanes. AGAIN I CAN NOT STRESS ENOUGH HOW DANGEROUS THIS IS! Issue 3: Traveling at highway speed the truck constantly shifts from 8th to 7th gear and back to 8th. The truck now struggles to maintain 8th gear under any load and keeps downshifting to 7th. You do not have to be towing for this issue to be experienced. My truck unloaded traveling at highway speeds constantly shifts from 8th to 7th to the point that if there are any hills I will simply shift the truck to 7th gear and leave it until the road is completely flat when I will then shift it back into 8th to prevent it from the constant shifting which is irritating."

William G., SC (2016 Ram 1500 Laramie 3.0-L V6 diesel)

"At 8,500 miles, I took my truck in for its first oil change. When I left, I noticed a low droning sound in certain accelerating conditions, and then significantly more engine noise in the cabin during heavy acceleration. Took it back to the dealership and they said the truck has a problem with its MDS system, but there is no fix for it. No way to repair it"

Anonymous, MO (2016 Ram 1500 Big Horn 5.7-L V8)
Oil leaks

"It leaked oil when I bought it from CarMax. Front oil seal leak mis-diagnosed twice by the RAM dealer under warranty. First diagnosed as a "bad cylinder". The next diagnosis by the same dealer was a leaking valve cover gasket. That required removal of the fuel rail which leaked when they reinstalled it. The oil continued to leak after three weeks at the dealers. I refused to have them touch the truck again and took the truck to another dealer who correctly diagnosed and fixed the leak. I have since become disappointed with this dealer and am preparing to take the truck to a third RAM dealer for recall work. Needless to say, I am very disappointed with the RAM dealer technical competency and will not use them except for warranty or recall work."

Electronic ignition

"My son's truck: Truck has repeatedly turned off without warning in variety of circumstances (e.g. in high speed rush hour traffic, parking lots, idling at traffic signal, on rural roads). Multiple attempts by dealer to Dx and fix. Unable to fix. Fiat Chrysler initially said rodent damage caused problem, this proved to be a false-cause. Now Fiat Chrysler says the vehicle was abused because there was a small amount of dried mud inside the engine compartment (we have photos - a very small amount of thin layer of mud splash from rural road). Fiat Chrysler black box dump after one month shows the vehicle shutting down several times without apparent cause, according to Fiat Chrysler. Fiat Chrysler has frozen the warranty so dealers cannot continue to pursue the search for the root cause, which I suspect is a firmware problem in silicone - and consequently will be very difficult to discover. My son has spent over $1,000 on rental vehicles, he is now forced to drive this dangerous truck because Fiat Chrysler is unwilling to declare the truck a lemon and provide a new vehicle. This is a dangerous vehicle, and except for the fact that my son is a Naval aircrew special air rescue swimmer (ie. trained to manage emergencies) there were two instances in high speed rush hour San Diego traffic that the truck malfunction would have caused injury &/or death had it not been for his ability to function under stress..... I would like Consumer Reports to use its considerable expertise and activism to examine this instance. Please contact my son (he is back from deployment, but still flying) ALEX KASPROW 352.672.1634 [cell] amkasprow@gmail.com"
