This iteration of the Forester remained one of the best small SUVs out there. With perhaps the most comfortable ride of any small SUV, it also handles well. The cabin is spacious, well designed and offers great outward visibility. A new non-turbo engine arrived for 2011, though it brought no significant improvement in acceleration or fuel economy. The four-speed automatic transmission was dated by the standards of the day.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2012 Subaru Forester owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Engine Major

Engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head, head gasket, turbo or supercharger, timing chain or timing belt.

What Owners Say

Cylinder head

"Two cylinders stopped firing and had to be replaced. The engine did not shut down. I drove it to the repair shop and had it fixed."

Anonymous, VA (2012 Subaru Forester XT 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Common issue on 2012 engine. Expensive labor charges on boxer engine."

Anonymous, (2012 Subaru Forester XT 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Engine rebuild or replacement

"It had the oil consumption problem that I think your magazine already knows about. Had to get a new short block. Subaru covered it though"

Anonymous, MA (2012 Subaru Forester 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"excessive oil use. engine block replaced by court settlement"

John O., NY (2012 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION. CLASS ACTION SUIT. NEW SHORT BLOCK PUT IN CAR BY DEALER AT SUBARU'S EXPENSE"

Anonymous, CO (2012 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Engine ran out of oil. Evidently, it's "normal" for a Subaru to burn 1 qt of oil every 1,000 miles"

Mark W., VA (2012 Subaru Forester 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"My car is one of the notorious models that consumes excessive oil. Subaru has agreed to replace the short block to remedy the problem"

Anonymous, CA (2012 Subaru Forester XT 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"I had to have the engine replaced as it blew up"

Anonymous, TX (2012 Subaru Forester 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Oil consumption problem. Engine was rebuilt under Subaru warranty"

Robert B., SC (2012 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"4 visits to Subaru dealers with on-going excessive oil consumption. 1. Dealer 1: "oil filter leak", changed and replaced oil filter. 2. Dealer 2: "gasket leaks", replaced gaskets: $2000 3. Dealer 3: "engine replacement," under warranty extended by Subaru due to known problem with premature ring wear. (Following appeal of #2 expense, Subaru refunded $1000 and paid for related rentals) 4. Dealer 4: "oil pan plug incorrectly installed", no charge after questioning $70 charge for oil change"

Gary R., MA (2012 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Was burning a lot of oil. Known issue, Subaru replaced with a short block engine"

Mike A., CA (2012 Subaru Forester XT 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"I had an oil consumption problem. Subaru told me this is a widespread problem with their boxer engines. I also had an oil leak which required $2,100 in parts and labor to fix before they would continue the phase testing for the oil consumption problem. After fixing the oil leak, they determined it did have the oil consumption problem. It consumed 1.33 quarts of oil in 1,200 miles. To fix the oil consumption problem required rebuilding the small block which was three days labor and about $4,"

Scott J., MN (2012 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The engine began using oil even though no oil leaks were found. We had to add oil almost every time we drove it. The dealership did a short block replacement under warranty"

Anonymous, OR (2012 Subaru Forester 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Excessive oil consumption due to stuck oil return ring. Short block was replaced under warranty"

Anonymous, AZ (2012 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"oil loss after two consumption tests. Engine was rebuilt twice by Subaru at no cost. So far no more oil loss"

Anonymous, IL (2012 Subaru Forester 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Failed oil consumption test. Subaru replaced short block. No charge. This is the second engine change. Each happened around 23000 miles. All maintenance has been kept up. Subaru knows of this problem"

Kenneth O., DE (2012 Subaru Forester 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Engine was consuming oil at a huge rate. Subaru replaced half the engine block and did so under warranty"

Lenore O., OH (2012 Subaru Forester XT 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Due to excessive oil consumption, Subaru replaced the short block at no cost to me"

Anonymous, MN (2012 Subaru Forester 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Oil over consumption - greater than one quart in 1000 miles. Subaru repaired it under warranty"

Marc B., MD (2012 Subaru Forester 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The local dealer’s regular maintanance workers neglected to warn me that my model had possible engine failures due to bad piston rings so to watch for excess oil usage. At my next oil change they said I basically had no oil and took the car right away to replace the engine, well initially saying I had to call national customer service but the following day took it to replace the engine. The dealer provided a vehicle for use for the two weeks it took. National Customer Service was very responsive but I don’t use that local dealers service any more."

Karen S., CO (2012 Subaru Forester 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Excessive oil consumption; 1 liter per 2000km."

Dale K., BC (2012 Subaru Forester 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"this is the SECOND engine replaced by Subaru due to high oil consumption. Each engine lasted approximately 26000 miles. The dealer did an oil consumption test, and it was high. To Subarus credit, they changed the second engine out of warranty. The dealer (Matt Slap , Newark, Delaware) said this was the first repeat engine they have ever seen. I had them replace the clutch, pressure plate, and throw out bearing at the time of engine ( short block) replacement. I just changed the front brake pads at 66000 miles. I do my own servicing, usually with factory parts."

Kenneth O., DE (2012 Subaru Forester 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Engine was one of those that had an oil consumption issue, not an outright leak. Mine was right at the threshold that allowed for an engine replacement up to 100,000 miles. I had it replaced at approximately 99,000 miles."

Brian I., OH (2012 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"excessive oil consumption, short block replaced under warranty but only after many months of requests. Later engine overheated because of faulty installation."

Anonymous, BC (2012 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Engine used oil completely in 5 days resulting in engine failure. Apparently a common problem with this engine."

Anonymous, GA (2012 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Original engine consumed oil excessively. Subaru replaced the engine at no cost to us.."

Anonymous, OH (2012 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The engine rebuild is an oil consumption issue. The small engine block has to be replaced. It has not been done yet because the car has to go through an oil consumption test. It looks like Subaru will try really hard to find some reason that they don't have to cover the problem that was on the car when it was produced."

Anonymous, BC (2012 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"failed oil consumption test after using 20 ounces over 1200 miles. Or about a quart of oil every 3-4 tanks of fuel. No external leaks observed"

Trevor H., OR (2012 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Subaru replaced engine block under warranty due to excessive oil consumption (1 qt/1000mi) at 26792 miles. Head gasket problem started; antifreeze consumption has been 1 gallon/3000 miles. Head gaskets were replaced a second time after approximately 1000 miles on new engine. It is going back to dealer soon, to see what they will do to remedy the problem of coolant loss."

James V., MA (2012 Subaru Forester XT 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"There was an excessive oil consumption and there was a recall on this model so they replaced the engine."

Anonymous, CA (2012 Subaru Forester XT 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"At 45,000 miles my Forester was using 1 quart of oil in 2500 miles. My Subaru dealer did a free oil change and oil consumption test and said it exceeded the oil use standard. They ordered a new short block and when I came in for my next oil change they provided a new Subaru vehicle for me to drive while they did the the repair at no cost to me (even did another free oil change). I did not think the oil usage was that big a deal, 1 quart between my 5000 mile oil changes. But since they offered to replace the Short block I thought they stand behind their products. Since the repair I now get 5000 miles with less than 1 quart usage between oil changes. I am planning to buy a new vehicle in the next year or so and it will be another Subaru."

Richard T., ND (2012 Subaru Forester XT 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Without indication of oil leaks or smoke the engine ran out of oil causing irreparable damage. I learned too late that this is not an uncommon problem with that vintage Subaru boxer engine."

Anonymous, PA (2012 Subaru Forester XT 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Engine has excessive oil consumption. Dealership replaced the short engine block and we are waiting to see if the problem is better. Service department said problem cannot be completely repaired. It will still require excess oil"

Anonymous, CT (2012 Subaru Forester 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Excessive oil consumption. Block replaced by Subaru under warranty. I'm extremely happy with the service that I received. No observable oil consumption has occurred in the 10,000 miles since the replacement was made"

Alan L., VT (2012 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Excessive oil consumption. Replacement of short block by Subaru due to apparent cylinder problems. Still uses one quart of oil every 2,000 miles"

Nicolette A., OR (2012 Subaru Forester 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Low oil pressure light flashed intermittently and heard engine knocking. Towed car to dealership and mechanic found a half dollar size piece of metal in engine case. The engine is under warranty and is to be replaced. Exact cause under investigation"

Anonymous, CA (2012 Subaru Forester 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Rebuilt because of excessive oil consumption"

Anonymous, NY (2012 Subaru Forester XT 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Vehicle consumed oil at an increasing rate causing me to check and fill oil between oil changes. Dealer performed diagnostic and then recommended engine “block” replacement. Quoted 4-6weeks. Ended up being closer to 10 weeks before vehicle returned. Subaru provided rental vehicle and repair at no cost."

Anonymous, ON (2012 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Excessive oil use. Subaru replaced engine block after class action about this problem."

Anonymous, PA (2012 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"From a dealer-initiated test it was determined that the oil consumption was excessive, so they replaced the engine. I personally did not think it was a significant problem, but the dealer on their initiative decided to replace the engine.. We have another 2012 Forester (my wife's car) that passed the oil consumption test and did not require any further work."

Julie E., WA (2012 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"warranty fix for high oil consumption"

Anonymous, NJ (2012 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Engine short block was replaced because of excessive oil usage. First replacement short block had a warped head, and subsequent antifreeze leak. Second replacement short block is fine, and has been performing as well as the original engine, without the excessive oil consumption, for about 2500 miles. All repairs were covered under warranty, and Subaru dealer was very accomodating."

James V., MA (2012 Subaru Forester XT 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Discovered oil leaking at multiple sites for no reason. Had to pull engine and repair multiple areas, seals, etc. Cost was $4000, but after discussion, Subaru agreed to pick up $3250, so I owed $750. I am still upset about this flaw that lead to premature engine problems at 46,000 miles. Makes me reluctant to invest in another Subaru."

Michael K., IA (2012 Subaru Forester XT 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Engine blew up while in Eisenhower tunnel. Had lost all oil. Subaru repair said not due to anything I had done. Had just recently had Subaru service change oil."

Mary P., CO (2012 Subaru Forester XT 2.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"T=he main bearing went out. The drive train was still under warranty and they replaced the short block."

Anonymous, TX (2012 Subaru Forester 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Dealer never informed us of that model's oil consumption problem and associated class action suit extended warranty. Had been losing oil at rate of one quart per 1,000 miles. As a result, oil drained between oil changes and motor froze. Engine had to be replaced few hundred miles after original warranty expiration. Replacement engin had to again be replaced 5,000 miles later. Dealer I purchased the vehicle from (Serra of Traverse City), was TOTALLY non-responsive and arrogant. I had engine work done by another Subaru specializing repair shop. We were Subary believers till now. This is our 5th Subaru over 25 years, w/o ANY problems and over 300,000 miles each. This Subaru Forester was a lemon, and dealer and Subaru grossly failed to deal with the engine and clutch problems. Following many phone calls with dealer and Subaru American, I gave up and started dealing with an independent Subaru repair shop; Subie Guys in Traverse City, MI. Never a Subaru again!"

"The engine was burning an excessive amount of oil soon after lurchase. The dealer where I purchased the vehicle replaced the block at no cost to.me."

Anonymous, ME (2012 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Purchased the Forester with 72,000 miles from a Subaru dealer. It had an oil consumption problem. At 92,000 miles another Subaru dealer told me the selling dealer group had lost its franchise. The second dealer volunteered that if the engine used more than a quart of oil in 3800 miles Subaru would give us a replacement short block and rebuild labor at no cost before 100,000 miles. The car used a quart in about 1000 miles. We were loaned a new Forester during repairs that lasted 5 weeks. We did not like the new model as well as the 2012, but appreciated the free loaner. The new rebuild uses no oil between 5000 mile changes with 0w20 Mobil 1."

"Too much oil consumption. Engine was replaced twice by Subaru under warranty at 80 000 km and 145 000 km"

Anonymous, QC (2012 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Given that the car is burning about a quart of oil per week and it still wants to stall/not restart now and then, it was recommended that I get rid of the car or replace the engine (not the best thing to do, according to my mechanic). We are considering both options, as the car without the engine, sans a driver side window that won't work now and then, is in very good shape."

Anonymous, NY (2012 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The oil consumption was getting worse and there is a service bulletin for this issue. Oil consumption was measured, proved to be excessive and engine block was replaced. This did fix the issue and I am satisfied."

"I am on the 4th engine in my car. It keeps burning excessive engine oil which started when I first bought the vehicle. They have replaced the engine each time however It continues. They have really refused to replace or buy the vehicle from me as requested. I have been sold a lemon. I cannot sell it knowing the vehicle will continue to burn oil. The vehicle is worthless."

"Oil consumption repaired under Subaru warranty"

Robert B., SC (2012 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Shortly after first buying the car, we discovered that the oil level was dropping significantly; no leak was apparent. Suburu had a TSB on oil loss and we got a short block installed under warranty. Oil loss continued, albeit at a lesser amount; Suburu argued oil consumption was normal, we feel loosing 2 quarts every 5000 miles is unacceptable. Local mechanic couldn't find the leak; was willing to do a rebuild, but it's cheaper to add oil at regular intervals than pay for entire rebuild"

Anonymous, MA (2012 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The engine burns an excessive amount of oil. Our mechanic found several times that the dipstick was dry at the 5k mi oil change mark. Now we routinely add 2 quarts over the 5k mi. Subaru ran an oil consumption test and said the engine was fine. But still no change in consumption. There is a class action lawsuit re this issue and our powertrain warranty was upped to 100k mi as a part of that"

Anonymous, VT (2012 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"This model forester is known for using oil, not through leakage but just disappearing. I finally had the dealer perform an oil consumption test and the results indicated it had consumed 10.2 oz. of oil in 1000 miles with the cutoff being 10 ounces. That made me eligible for the replacement of the engine if I wanted. I elected not to take the risk of problems later (improperly seated gaskets causing leakage etc.) and I'll just check the oil frequently. The service manager, whom I trust, did n"

"I never brought this issue to Subaru to be fixed because it was minor. I never suspected I had an oil leak issue because where I park every night there are no signs of oil drops on the surface. Subaru brought this issue to my attention when I completed phase 1 of the oil consumption testing. They told me I had an oil leak that needed to be fixed in order to continue with phase 2 of the oil consumption testing. The oil leak consisted of 2 drops of oil sitting on the bottom of the engine. "Minor oil leak from the driver's side lower timing chain cover. More serious problem appears to be oil consumption (more than a quart per 1200 miles). Subaru conducted oil consumption test and vehicle passed, but I'm taking it back for a second test because it uses a lot of oil, especially in warmer weather"

"Had block replaced in 2016 due to excessive oil consumption. Seemed to be ok but a constant smell of burning oil. Took back to dealer. They replaced several gaskets. Oil started leaking on garage floor. Took it back 3 times to finally stop oil leaks. I contribute all oil problems after block replacementto to poor workmanship at dealer."

Anonymous, TN (2012 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Oil leak starting at 70,000 miles from a likely head gasket failure. Independent mechanic and the dealer itself says this is a very common problem with Subarus. In my review of other Subaru Forester owners, this is standard. I am extremely disappointed at the continued glowing reviews Consumer Reports gives this vehicle. There is even an extended warranty for excessive oil consumption on the Subaru Forester brought about from a class action lawsuit. How can you still recommend this vehicle?"

Richard C., MD (2012 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"It's oil consumption but not oil leaked on the ground. Since 100K miles or so it has been consuming a lot of oil, finding I have to regularly (about every 1000 miles) check the oil to make sure the level doesn't get too low. Most recently having to add around 1.5 quarts/1000 miles. It has been inspected by the dealership's service department and it is sounding like the only way to prevent the oil loss is an expensive engine overhaul."

John S., IL (2012 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The problem is excessive oil consumption. I have to add one quart of oil every 1000 miles. The problem has gotten worse with miles. Subaru says it isn't covered once the 3 year 36000 mile warranty is up."

Daniel H., WI (2012 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The engine from this year was redesigned for fuel efficiency -- unfortunately it also loses oil due to flimsy valves and the oil light doesn't come on. I check the oil at every gas up -- I don't need to top it off that often, but I don't want to forget. Newer engines don't have this problem."

Anonymous, KY (2012 Subaru Forester 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"During airbag recall replacement, Stivers Subaru, Decatur, GA, service claimed it had found an oil leak which only Subaru repair personnel were likely to find. They claimed repair required pulling motor because oil sink was welded to motor, not bolted. The repair would cost around $1,000! I declined the repair and halted all further business with Stivers Subaru or, for that matter, with any other Subaru dealer. I researched the alleged problem on internet and with three experienced acquaintance auto mechanics. I discovered problem was common because of ludicrous engine design that prevented simple oil seal/gasket replacement. On the internet I read ads for *scores* if not *hundreds* of rebuilt Subaru engines. A few had limited warranties. Most were As is. I assume that Subaru engine engineering and construction is a purposeful rip-off scam. My weekly check for oil leaks has found nothing BUT Subaru service advised me that leakage was subtle and invisible and would inevitably cause major disaster to vehicle's computer and electrical components. Stupidly, I had sought the safest 50th wedding anniversary vehicle for my infirm and elderly spouse. Apparently I succeeded with collision safety and with access ease BUT the disappearing oil trick, although apparently true, is a needless, unnecessary, and near-caveat emptor crime."

Kenneth G., GA (2012 Subaru Forester 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Subaru issues recall re: engine burning oil. Had to bring car to dealer for testing; they claim no problem, but am burning oil between oil changes to extent that oil has to be added at least 1x-2x btwn changes, and only 2 or 3 quarts are drained at the time of change. The low-oil light doesn't always engage, but it did once while I was traveling so I immediately went to the closest gas station & the oil tank was almost empty. Subaru has refused to do anything, despite many complaints from many drivers that show the engine on 2012 Foresters need to be replaced. Furthermore, the engine revs too high when climbing hills, and has done so since I first bought it. My mechanic said it's probably related to the same engine problem causing the oil burning. Subaru used to be a reliable, customer-service company but is not that way anymore."

"I need to add a quart of motor oil every 1,000 miles."

Michael U., CT (2012 Subaru Forester 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The car burns oil and does not alert you to it on the dashboard. This model and year is known to burn oil and Subaru offers to fix it for you, but you have to go through an elaborate back and forth with the dealer to "make sure" that it is burning oil at the rate they consider their problem. They make you come back so many times that you give up because it is taking so much time out of your life to keep taking it to the dealer and then be told "It's almost at the level of burning oil that we will fix, but not quite." I know that is their strategy and it worked. Normally I would go straight to higher ups at Subaru, but I just didn't have the energy to keep up the fight. It uses expensive synthetic oil and you just have to carry oil around all the time and become very in tune with your car's sounds and check the oil all the time. It's been a huge expense and I hate the fact that I am polluting at the same time."

Anonymous, (2012 Subaru Forester Unsure 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"I listed it as a leak, but it's really just usage. The 2012 uses a lot of oil. I add a quart of oil every time I fill up with gas, but there is no leak. There was a recall on the short block, but it was "voluntary," so it did not flag as a recall. The extra oil messed up the rings, and there's a blowback problem; the plugs get fouled. This was the result of a design flaw but Subaru never fully corrected it even in the recall, and not all owners were notified of the recall."

"The engine leaking oil has been an ongoing problem for years. Subaru rebuilt the engine a few years ago to repair it, but there are still problems with it. A few months ago the oil light kept coming on and despite repeated attempts by my usual dealership, Santa Cruz Subaru, to diagnose the problem they could not. Recently, when I took it in to a different dealership, Stevens Creek Subaru, for a recall to replace the airbags and they said there was an oil leak and it would cost $1,600 to repair. At this time I haven't had the work done since I'm not driving it but I'm skeptical about the diagnosis by Stevens Creek dealership who did not provide information about it for me to get a second opinion. I don't trust Stevens Creek Subaru based on previous experiences I've had with them. Anyway, I'm stuck with a Subaru Forester that is and always has been a lemon."

Subaru has shown little care for us in the wake of this fact, after we'd reached out to Subaru USA, Subaru Japan and our dealer. So, if someone experiencing this problem didn't have a DIY diagnostic code reader and clearer like I do, this may be very frustrating since cruise would not work and it has a tendency to keep coming back."

"Last week the tire pressure monitor warning light came on. I had the tires checked for leaks/pressure, and a little air was added because they were on the low end of the pressure range. The warning light continued to flash. I needed new tires anyway, so bought a set the following day. However, the light continues to flash, so I must go to the dealer to have it checked/repaired. The only other time this warning light came on, the tire pressure was low, so the monitor was helpful"

Warning lights

"The tire warning light was persistently lit even when all 4 sensors were changed. It turned out that an outdated phone cable that was plugged in interferes electronically with the signal. It took about 8 trips to Subaru before it was figured it out!"

"Tire pressure, engine light and cruise control lights come on intermittently. The garage can't find the issue."

Anonymous, NH (2012 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The warning light for low oil did not appear on our dash when an oil seal blew on our motor. The only reason my husband realized we had a problem was because of the oil smell in the car and the oil smoke being emitted from the exhaust when he pulled over to check the car. He then dipped the oil stick, which indicated little or no oil and saw oil over the engine."

Rough shifting

"Repeatedly had issues with shifting from 1st to 2nd gear (4 gears total) when the car is cold (0 deg C or lower) - a hesitation followed by a "clunk" when going from 1st to 2nd gear. However, recently has expanded to "clunk" during warmer springtime temperatures between 4 to 6 deg C. At no time was any issue identified by Subaru service (no faults on the computers, no ability of mechanics to replicate the condition, even with the vehicle left overnight at the dealership during the winter outdo"

Anonymous, BC (2012 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Since day 1 of owning this vehicle It has shifted oddly. I was told this is normal for a vehicle with CVT transmission. However I despise it and find it highly unsafe. When accelerating it seems to stall, and or slip when changing gears. This small time it seems to buffer and lag, creates for a dangerous situation as I may need to pass someone or avoid another car entirely and cannot due to a weak/unreliable transmission"
