A comfortable ride, responsive handling, good visibility, simple controls, and a relatively spacious rear seat all combine to make the Impreza easy to live with. The hatchback's cargo versatility gives it an edge in practicality over the sedan version. Sport models come with snazzy wheels and a bit more equipment than more basic Imprezas.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2012 Subaru Impreza owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Engine Major

Engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head, head gasket, turbo or supercharger, timing chain or timing belt.

What Owners Say

Cylinder head

"Part of the valve issue. They had to completely rebuild the left side if the engine"

Anonymous, WI (2012 Subaru Impreza Sport 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Subaru knew that the new 2.0 engine had a internal problem with heads valves , head piston rings burning oil . 1 quart per 1200 miles which is ridiculous and Subaru said it's normal which was BS"

Joseph S., CA (2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0i 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Engine rebuild or replacement

"excessive oil use, rings and all caskets replaced"

J M., OH (2012 Subaru Impreza Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Leaking oil. Rebuilt under warranty"

Anonymous, WA (2012 Subaru Impreza Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"engine had to be complete rebuilt, including block. defect was completely paid for by Subaru, including rental car. took 41 days for Subaru to get car back to me. very satisfied at this time with there handling this major problem"

Anonymous, FL (2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0i 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"engine consumes 1 quart of oil every 1,000 to 1,500 miles. subject of major class action suit. Subaru has denied anything wrong with car"

Anonymous, CT (2012 Subaru Impreza Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"burning oil down 2 quarts engine oil light warning. They changed the short block under warranty"

Anonymous, VT (2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"At 55000 miles the motor simply "blew". The short block is being replaced as I write this. Vehicle was serviced regularly, synthetic oil , at the time of engine failure, was only 3000 miles old"

Steven M., CT (2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0i 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Noticed excessive oil consumption first in December 2013. Learned of TSB for oil consumption in October 2014. Second-level oil consumption confirmed need for replacement of half-block engine"

Anonymous, NY (2012 Subaru Impreza Sport 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"At 30k miles engine began using oil excessively. Documented the problem with the dealer from whom we bought the car. He said this was a known problem with this new engine, and they replaced the engine block at no charge whatsoever to us. Very good"

Dennis W., OR (2012 Subaru Impreza Sport 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Excessive oil consumption from new, about 1 litre every 1800 km. Dealer monitored from 60,000 to 70,000 km and submitted report to Subaru, who agreed to replace engine (rebuilt short block) under warranty). Since then oil consumption appears more r"

Anonymous, ON (2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0i 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Oil light started coming on - was burning oil. Returned to dealer at 59,000 miles. After one year of returning car to dealer for oil consumption tests- dealer stated this week, they have ordered a short block for my car. They said the oil consumption"

Anonymous, VA (2012 Subaru Impreza Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Valve issue which was difficult for subaru techs to diagnose. Had to take it to a private mechanic to have it diagnosed properly. Engine made an odd joise at rpm 1000. Bulletin had just been released by subaru"

Anonymous, WI (2012 Subaru Impreza Sport 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"The low oil light would come on between oil changes. I would have to add a quart of oil routinely between oil changes. Mentioned it to the dealership and they initially said that was within specs. I started working with a new service advisor who had an oil consumption test done and determined that the car was burning oil. The short block was replaced to solve the problem. Fortunately that was covered by my extended warranty."

Anonymous, CA (2012 Subaru Impreza Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Engine needed replacement after 60K miles. Dealer completely replaced engine for $800. I am actually very happy with the price and service and feel that I got a new vehicle at the 60,000 mile mark!"

Steven G., FL (2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Oil consumption was extreme. Subaru extended warranty coverage and we qualified for a new short block, no cost to us."

David B., ON (2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0i 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Check engine light indicating cam timing sensor failure, but also had engine recall for valve spring replacement. Previously had cam shaft rebuild due to failed engine sealant at about 60,000 miles (2017). This engine is garbage."

Steven P., TX (2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0i 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Recall on the engine valves. Valve spring would break and the car would sop dead. Luckily, it didn't happen to us."

Kevin S., PA (2012 Subaru Impreza Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"My car was consuming too much oil. They couldn’t find the problem and replaced the engine free of charge.."

Anonymous, TX (2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"One to two months after a valve spring recall the car engine stopped while driving to work. The valve spring had broken allowing the spring fragments and valve to enter the cylinder and contacting and damaging the piston. After a few days in a rental car, the local dealership (not the dealership of purchase), provided a loaner vehicle while the Impreza engine was being rebuilt. While the engine was apart, some additional maintenance was conducted (new clutch, water pump, remains 3 spark plugs, etc.). While those additional items were charged to me, the engine failure repair as a result of the valve spring failure was not charged to me. The loaner car was provided free of charge, and the fee for the rental car was reimbursed by Subaru Corporation."

Michael O., IL (2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"burning oil so much low oil light came on three times before 35000 miles. Under warrantee Subaru change short block. At 84000 miles engine blew up. valve broke off and fell into short block Subaru wold rebuild it for $8000 I had my mechanic rebuild it for $5000"

Anonymous, VT (2012 Subaru Impreza Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"A valve broke of and rattled around in the cylinder destroying half the engine."

Robert B., OR (2012 Subaru Impreza Sport 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"The engine was using too much oil, so had to be replaced. We had an oil consumption test done. It sounds like this is an issue with many Subarus of this era. The synthetic oil does not last for 7000 miles as stated. The light would consistently come on at around 3000 miles after an oil change. Other than this, the Impreza has been a solid vehicle. Subaru has treated us well through the problems with the oil consumption and they are standing behind their product."

Katherine L., WA (2012 Subaru Impreza Sport 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"High consumption of motor oil. 1L/2000km. No problem, Subaru offered to change the motor after following oil consumption for a year. With a 10 year warranty for motor. 2012 to 2022."

Marc L., QC (2012 Subaru Impreza Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"This new 2.0 engine was made with bad short block heads burns engine oil within 1150 miles 1 quart of oil , Subaru finally admitted this problem and gave us an 100 k extended engine transmission warranty but it still isn’t right they should have bought our car back or offered a new car"

Joe S., CA (2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0i 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Oil consumption has been a problem for years with this car. But until Subaru recently changed the measures around oil consumption we did not qualify for help. The changes meant we did qualify and Subaru Canada replaced the short block"

David B., ON (2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0i 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Regular maintenance at 60,000 miles found oil leaking from camshaft carrier. This is apparently a known problem for a certain group of 2012 Impreza's, and it is not covered by warranty after 60,000 miles when it is most likely to develop. I was informed it was because the silicone sealant used for the camshaft carrier area was not enough to maintain the seal with repetitive heating and cooling of the engine over the years. We called Subaru of America about the problem, and Subaru was very respo"

Anonymous, TX (2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0i 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Excessive oil consumption issue due to bad piston rings. Mfg replacement of entire lower end of engine. The lower engine was backordered and took just over 3 weeks to replace. Dealership provided a free loaner for the entire period"

Michael C., WA (2012 Subaru Impreza Sport 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"The Subaru uses approximately 1 quart of oil every 1000-1200 miles. My son nor I were aware of this excessive oil usage which resulted in the engine running low on oil which caused the engine needing replacement. Subaru informed me that the amount of oil usage was normal for a 2012 2.0 Impreza. That would mean between oil changes which Subaru recommends every 7600 miles 5-6 quarts of oil would need to be added between oil changes. Why bother doing an oil change when you need to add a quart ever"

Kevin P., NY (2012 Subaru Impreza Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Repaired under warranty for excessive oil consumption"

Anonymous, PA (2012 Subaru Impreza Sport 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Engine was replaced due to oil consumption"

Anonymous, SC (2012 Subaru Impreza Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Excessive oil consumption tested by Subaru dealer lead to short block replacement"

Anonymous, AK (2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0i 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Head gasket

"Car was in an accident prior to its sale to us. Subaru dealer did not disclose this fact to us to us. Subaru Repair Center, in diagnosing need for head gasket replacement, asked if car had had its transmission rebuilt. This prompted us to go on to Carfax which is when we discovered the repair history."

William M., NJ (2012 Subaru Impreza Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Unadvertised recall for problem with gaskette. Had 2 major engine repairs under warranty recall that each took 3-4 days. I never experienced the problem that was to be corrected by the repair."

Anonymous, OR (2012 Subaru Impreza Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"The Head Gasket was leaking and added to the regular oil consumption. I had it repaired during another major repair which was a recall."

Bill O., SK (2012 Subaru Impreza Sport 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"My Impreza had a fauly head gasket that needed to be replaced. Subaru did so under warranty coverage (that they extended to owners at no cost)."

Anonymous, MI (2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"It was actually CAM shaft that was leaking. Covered under warranty but would have been very expensive to fix otherwise, requires rebuilding engine"

Anonymous, CA (2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Miscellaneous squeaks"

Anonymous, WA (2012 Subaru Impreza Unsure 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, CA (2012 Subaru Impreza Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Many squeaks n rattles , wind noise throughout the entire car. Poor workmanship sounds like an old clunker"

Joe S., CA (2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0i 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"There have been squeaks/rattles in the dash and two front seats ever since we bought the car in 2012. Finally, this past year we had the 4th and last one fixed. Since the dealer is across town we have spent a lot of time in the past 5 years attending to these problems"

G G., WA (2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0i 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Rattle/buzz in dash"

Michael V., MI (2012 Subaru Impreza Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Wind noise

"A "loud" car has been a historical problem with Subarus....firewall insulation would go a long way. After all these years you would think these complaints would be heard. It is making me consider a different vehicle...this from a very loyal owner"

Robin B., WI (2012 Subaru Impreza Sport 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"It is noisy, making it hard to hear the radio at times, whether from road or air noise."

Glenn R., WI (2012 Subaru Impreza Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"I have Bluetooth, but no one on the other end of the line can hear me very well. The speaker is in the ceiling of the car and picks up outside noise. The car is not very airtight. I get a lot of ambient noise from outside the car."

Anonymous, CA (2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Above 60 mph, there is significant wind and tire noise. I have to turn the radio way up to hear it. Road noise increases with speed. Not sure if it is tire noise as I bought the car used"

Anonymous, PA (2012 Subaru Impreza Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"the loudest car I have experienced the road noise is terrible. That includes wind and especially tire noise on our poor concrete freeways"

Anonymous, WA (2012 Subaru Impreza Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Wind and pavement noise is extreme. Imagine the noise level while flying at 30,000 feet near the back of an airliner behind the engines. Driving at 65-70 mph is similar to airline travel. Long drives are very fatiguing due to this cabin noise level. Inadequate sound dampening and insulation"

Michael C., WA (2012 Subaru Impreza Sport 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

What Owners Say

Antilock system (ABS)

"Sensor failed and needed replacement"

George D., MD (2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0i 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, WA (2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Master cylinder

"due to Vermot winters cylinders would rust and stick. SALT is the culprit"

Anonymous, VT (2012 Subaru Impreza Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

Premature brake wear

"Something broke in the break system and gouged the break drum. Dealership covered this with the warrantee"

D H., NY (2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"The rear brakes were replace under warrantee at less than 20k miles. The front brakes are currently squeaking and in need of replacing. There is also pulsing in the pedal, so the rotors need replacing also"

Anonymous, NY (2012 Subaru Impreza Sport 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Dealer diagnosed while car was in for loud rear wheel bearing. Unable to machine the rotors so replaced.."

Anonymous, MA (2012 Subaru Impreza Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Rust on the rotors and possible warping caused the rotors to rub on the dust shield creating a intermittent huge noise. Took 3 tries to diagnose and fix the problem. At 78k miles."

Anonymous, OH (2012 Subaru Impreza Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"They were worn out around 90000 km."

Anonymous, NB (2012 Subaru Impreza Sport 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Repalaced as part of complete brake job."

Anonymous, MA (2012 Subaru Impreza Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Usually rear brake rotors and pads last longer. I needed to replace both rear pads and rotors. The front pads and rotors are still good at 55,000 miles, This was expensive and I think a bit odd. The brakes have always worked well, and it wasn't a safety issue as the work was done as preventative maintenance"

Ron G., NY (2012 Subaru Impreza Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Squeaking

"Squeaking caused by rust on rotor that then deformed calipers on front brakes only"

Anonymous, NY (2012 Subaru Impreza Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Car started squeaking when in reverse, then more often. Odd noise at higher speeds (60+ mph)"

Andrea G., MA (2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"I just had a recall for the valve spring. They found my cam covers were leaking. I have also had to replace oil between oil changes."

Anonymous, CA (2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Oil leaks

"Oil leak in the cam shaft apparently caused by defective sealant at the factory. Covered by manufacturing warranty"

Anonymous, WA (2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0i 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Not sure if my oil was leaking or not, but I've had the oil light come on after 3,000 or so miles of driving. Took to the dealer, they checked but found no issues. I just carry a few quarts of oil with me in my travels and fill up when needed"

Anonymous, WA (2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0i 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"My low oil pressure light came on and I had to pull over and add oil"

Gerald W., WI (2012 Subaru Impreza Sport 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Since I've owned the car, it has run out of oil twice while I've been on a trip and have had to add a quart. I have my car serviced on time since it's been purchased so this is not happening because of abuse of the vehicle"

Helen D., OH (2012 Subaru Impreza Sport 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Using an excessive amount of oil. Have to routinely put oil into car between 7,500 mi oil change because oil light comes on"

Anonymous, CA (2012 Subaru Impreza Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Engine burns 1 litre of oil every 2000 kilometres"

Anonymous, QC (2012 Subaru Impreza Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"My wife drives and maintains this car. She has to periodically add oil beyond the service stops at our dealer. Usually a quart between service checks."

Patrick O., NJ (2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0i 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"My Impreza has burned oil since it was new. It is not a problem in the winter and at low speeds. But summer drives on the Interstate burn the oil quickly. I have not done a consumption test because it is a hassle and the bar is high - warning light in 1,200 miles. That's ridiculous. I will not buy another Subaru, but it is hard to me to understand why this car was so highly rated by CR."

Benjamin P., NC (2012 Subaru Impreza Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"The engine short block had to be replaced by Subaru within the first year or two, no charge, d/t a problem with the 2012 Impreza and oil usage. Before and after the replacement, my oil warning light always comes on one or two thousand miles before I'm due for an oil change. I keep a 5 qt bottle of oil in my car, and add a quart when this happens. Doable, but a hassle, and happens every single time before I'm due for an oil change."

Mary L., WI (2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0i 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Previously mentioned the leaks were due to the head gasket leak."

Bill O., SK (2012 Subaru Impreza Sport 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Oil light came on. Car had only 33,000 miles. Every time I get oil changed elsewhere it is 1/2 quart low and I change twice as frequently as recommended due to the problems this model has had with heavy oil loss in general. When changed at dealer and oil test requested, am always told it is normal. Yet, when my oil light came on yet again, was told by dealer that oil seals were broken and needed replacing which required what sounded like a partial engine rebuild and was very expensive. Also learned the company replaced the brand of seals used, so must have had a service memo on it. Complained to Subaru national and consumer office is less helpful now that it moved from CA to NJ. Subaru did pay partially toward very expensive repair. This and repeated recalls since purchase make me hesitate to recommend this model. Also, passenger window won't go up or down. Reported problem while under warranty. Subaru now refuses to repair and says it will cost $400. Feel Subaru has gone downhill. BTW, have driven 16 miles since March."

"At around 80000 miles, after having recall work done on the valve assembly, this Subaru started consuming approximately 1 quart of oil between oil changes. I had the dealer service checkk it out and they tightend a few things but this didn't resolve the issue. Upon further research I found that excessive oil consumption common issue with the subaru 2.1 engine."

I drive 160 miles every day, 16 miles on secondary roads the remainder on Free way at speeds of 60-75 MPH. this car uses 0-20 synthetic oil and I must add a quart every 1000 miles, so I drive 7500-8000 miles on an oil change and burn through another oil change pus in that timeframe"

Jackson T., MN (2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Not so much an oil leak as oil consumption. Twice I've had the oil light go on just as I was headed into a mountain range on a long trip, in evening, on a weekend where being stranded would be dangerous and no help is available. Both times were within a few thousand miles of an oil change. First time was within a year and a half of newly purchased. Currently undergoing monitoring every 1200 miles to see if I qualify for engine replacement. I doubt they'll justify it"

The car makes a roaring sounds and has trouble downshifting. The front end shakes when downshifting. The dealer charged me over $500 to service the transmission and differential, but the problem remained. The dealer says they cannot do anything until I get a warning light. Exhaust

Muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, leaks.

What Owners Say

Exhaust leaks

"Leak is not major except for a little more of engine noisel May need replacement part at next service"

Anonymous, OH (2012 Subaru Impreza Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Exhaust manifold

"Similar to comments made earlier regarding head gasket repair, Subaru dealer sold us this car without disclosing the fact that it had been in an accident prior to our purchase (we found this out on Carfax about 3 years later). The need for a new exhaust manifold on this car (at 78000 miles) may ALSO be related to its accident history (just like the need for a new head gasket)."

William M., NJ (2012 Subaru Impreza Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Muffler

"Noted loud exhaust noise several years ago. Had it inspected at Subaru Dealer and told system OK. Finally, after noise got worse, had the system diagnosed and replaced October 2018 by a independent service station. Seemed unusual for this to happen so soon."

Anonymous, OH (2012 Subaru Impreza Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Other/unsure

"Airbag recall."

Anonymous, NY (2012 Subaru Impreza Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

Sensors (includes O2 or oxygen sensor)

Anonymous, MA (2012 Subaru Impreza Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Mechanic said fuel mixture was not correct."

Anonymous, OR (2012 Subaru Impreza Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"At approx 57000 miles my O2 sensor failed and needed to be replaced. I believe the sensor failed early (usually they last until at least 100k miles) because my car's engine failed an oil consumption test at approx 30K miles. I believe this engine leak caused oil to enter the exhaust leading to early failure. Subaru rebuilt my engine for free after the consumption test failure, and I've had no other problems with oil consumption."

"Tailgate latch fails repeatedly. Replaced twice. Still rattles, Does not latch reliably"

Anonymous, VA (2012 Subaru Impreza Sport 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Windows

"Failure of the power window motor and regulator on a rear window, causing the window glass to slide into the door body. Even with the opening tarped over, it was almost too noisy to drive the car, and impossible to keep the interior cool (this was the peak of summer). The only solution was to replace the entire power window assembly. Fortunately, my warranty package covered the cost for a small deductible."
