Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

For 2013, Subaru tweaked the steering and suspension, which helped make emergency handling more secure and predictable. But the changes also robbed the car of its plush ride. It's was still good mind you, just not great. The redesigned 173-hp, 2.5-liter "flat-four" engine delivers slightly quicker acceleration and fuel economy of 26 mpg overall, which is impressive for an AWD car. Still, most competing four-cylinder sedans were quicker.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2013 Subaru Legacy owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Engine Major

Engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head, head gasket, turbo or supercharger, timing chain or timing belt.

What Owners Say

Cylinder head

"Burns oil excessively"

Anonymous, NJ (2013 Subaru Legacy 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Engine rebuild or replacement

"Heavy oil usage, so local Subaru dealer put a new short block in the car at no cost to us, and they provided a free rental car for us."

Anonymous, WA (2013 Subaru Legacy Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Oil burner."

Anonymous, ME (2013 Subaru Legacy 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Our vehicle was experiencing excessive oil consumption. Subaru indicated that this particular vin # did in fact have a problem with excessive oil consumption. We did conduct several oil consumption checks on the vehicle which resulted in the consumption to be within limits; but only by a small margin. After completing an oil consumption check in conjunction with a long distance trip rather than local driving, the consumption was out of limits. Subaru replaced our engine with a new short block as the engine was defective. We have had no problems with the engine since the replacement as we are now experiencing normal oil consumption between oil changes. There was no problem with the company in correcting the defective engine other than getting an oil consumption check to validate the fact that we were burning at least one quart of oil between each recommended oil change at 7500 miles."

Anonymous, CO (2013 Subaru Legacy 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The engine started using oil---maybe a quart in 1000 miles. Our local Subaru dealer installed a short block and we have had no engine issues since."

Anonymous, WA (2013 Subaru Legacy Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Engine rebuilt to fix oil consumption problem. Not fixed by rebuild!"

Anonymous, ME (2013 Subaru Legacy 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"short block replacement covered by oil consumption lawsuit"

Anonymous, NY (2013 Subaru Legacy Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Had excessive oil consumption within a 5000 mile oil change. Subaru and my local Subaru dealer installed a new short block at no expense to us. At this time it appears the oil consumption issue has been resolved"

Anonymous, WA (2013 Subaru Legacy Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"High oil consumption lead me to have the dealer check the car out. They are replacing the block under warranty"

Anonymous, NY (2013 Subaru Legacy Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Burned excessive oil. Dealer provided a ring job (installed new redesigned piston rings) under warranty"

Charles E., FL (2013 Subaru Legacy 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Started with excessive oil consumption. Found out there was a TSB for excessive wear on piston rings. Repair required replacement of rings or short block. Ours required the short block due to cylinder wall scoring. All covered by TSB warranty"

James H., OH (2013 Subaru Legacy Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Excessive oil consumption. Installed a dealer build short block to fix problem. Rebuild of engine did not fix the problem. No support from Subaru America declared excessive oil consumption normal. Oil consumption is the same before engine rebuilt"

Anonymous, ME (2013 Subaru Legacy 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Timing belt or chain

"persistent squeaking was determined to be timing belt and drive shaft bearing and had to have replaced. Continues to squeak after replacement but seems to run fine"

Anonymous, KS (2013 Subaru Legacy Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Backup or other camera/sensors

"Backup camera malfunctioned several times under warranty. Dealership replaced dash unit about 4 times which did not solve the problem, which they eventually realized was the camera itself"

Richard S., CT (2013 Subaru Legacy Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
CD player

"Does not properly read/play CD's ... "disk not found""

Barbara S., WY (2013 Subaru Legacy 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Vincenza S., NY (2013 Subaru Legacy 3.6R 3.6-L 6 Cyl)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"The wireless interface with my cell phone does not work"

Anonymous, MA (2013 Subaru Legacy Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"System requires "initial setup" every time car is started"

Barbara S., WY (2013 Subaru Legacy 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"Phone pairing on this vehicle seems more difficult than it should be and sometimes required multiple attempts. The infotainment technology on this vehicle has seemed a little behind the curve."

Anonymous, CO (2013 Subaru Legacy 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The 2015 Forester pairs when car starts. With the 2013 Legacy, the pairing is intermittent and the cars sometimes need a restart to achieve connection as I listen to books on my iPhone"

Vincenza S., NY (2013 Subaru Legacy 3.6R 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

"In our Toyota Sienna, pairing bluetooth is how it should be, very simple and works every time. In the Subaru, it is a huge task to get it paired the first time and every time after. We've had issues with it not recognizing a connection after turning the car off, resulting in having to go through all the menu and voice commands to set it up every time we turn the car on. The commands on the knobs to set up bluetooth do not work"

Anonymous, ID (2013 Subaru Legacy Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, NY (2013 Subaru Legacy Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Voice control commands

"The hands free system does not work for my cellphone"

Anonymous, MA (2013 Subaru Legacy Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Engine Minor

Accessory belts and pulleys, engine computer, engine mounts, engine knock or ping, oil leaks.

What Owners Say

Accessory belts or pulleys

"Initially, sounded like the belt was slipping. Was fixed, happened again and dealer determined the cause was the pulley assembly which was a closed unit was defective. I think they said it did not have enough lubricant in it when it was made"

Anonymous, FL (2013 Subaru Legacy Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Engine computer

"Check engine light came on due to Cam Shaft position sensor having a problem. Mechanic said it needed to be re-shimmed, dealership wanted to charge me double to replace the sensor entirely. Car has been in the shop for a total of 4 days for this problem. Opted to re-shim the sensor rather than replace it. Still waiting to see if that has fixed the problem"

Anonymous, CO (2013 Subaru Legacy Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Oil leaks

"It requies a few quarts of oil between oil changes."

Anonymous, (2013 Subaru Legacy Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Ever since we've had the vehicle, it has leaked oil or burned through it too quickly. We've had several mechanics look at it and are still unable to diagnose the issue."

Anonymous, PA (2013 Subaru Legacy Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Oil leaks started shortly after I bought the car. Ultimately I needed to add oil every 500 miles. I replaced the engine at just over 100000 miles for 7 thousand dollars"

Anonymous, WA (2013 Subaru Legacy 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"There were 2 oil leaks at the same time on both sides of the engine block."

Anonymous, NC (2013 Subaru Legacy 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"We continue to use oil though none of it leaks. Subaru recall stated not enough consumption to warrant a fix. We cannot go 1 full oil change (5,000 miles) without adding oil."

Mark K., FL (2013 Subaru Legacy Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Not really an oil leak - but it is something that CR has reported on in the past. It does burn oil (about a quart every 4000 miles, change the oil every 5000 miles). This is normal according to Subaru. I have always taken care or my cars so I just add oil and check every 1000 miles."

Samuel S., CT (2013 Subaru Legacy Premium 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

"This model engine has known problem with oil rings. It uses too much oil. Twice, we have stopped on the interstate on a trip because the oil light came on."

Anonymous, TN (2013 Subaru Legacy 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Not an oil leak, oil burning. CU reported that this may happen and I experienced it at 41,000. Does not burn enough for a fix - about a quart every 2000 miles, and change the synthetic every 5000 miles. Only issue with car after 41,000 (now with 70,000)."

Samuel S., CT (2013 Subaru Legacy Premium 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

"Engine burns oil (like CU reported might happen). Does not burn enough for Subaru to do anything. Burns 2 quarts every 3000 miles"

Samuel S., CT (2013 Subaru Legacy Premium 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

Anonymous, MN (2013 Subaru Legacy 3.6R 3.6-L 6 Cyl)
Headlights

"Headlight burned out, fixed under warranty."

Anonymous, WI (2013 Subaru Legacy Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Headlight bulbs have been replaced 4 times in the past 12 months. First time they went out, I replaced them. I found it very difficult in that I had to remove the front tires and splashgaurds to gain access to the back of the housing. Since then the dealership has replaced them each time. The last time, I had recommended to the dealership to replace the housing and they disagreed"

Anonymous, MD (2013 Subaru Legacy 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Headlight bulb had to be replaced--low beam was burned out"

Anonymous, WA (2013 Subaru Legacy 3.6R 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

Anonymous, PA (2013 Subaru Legacy 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Squeaking

"despite multiple visits to dealership, the car has a high-pitched squeeling/squeaking at times. While we can't hear it at higher speeds, it is often quite obvious at slower speeds or while stopped. Almost sounds like it needs belt dressing, but we don't do that anymore. The belt was replaced and issue brought up several times."

Anonymous, CT (2013 Subaru Legacy 3.6R 3.6-L 6 Cyl)
Shocks or struts

"Not only is the initial ride terrible on the Legacy Sport, it's gotten worse with time making squeaking noises going over even the simplest of speed bumps and smacking the body down like there is no suspension at all. We've taken it to our Subaru dealer and they assure us that nothing is wrong at all!"

Anonymous, ID (2013 Subaru Legacy Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Body Integrity

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, loose or cracked seals and/or weather-stripping, air and water leaks.

What Owners Say

Air or water leaks

"Dust and dirt plugged up the drain tubes built into the sun roof. These drains are meant to allow any water that enters the water channel surrounding the sun roof to drain off safely. Ours became plugged and water drained into the back floor of the car ruing the carpets and requiring us to replace the car’s amplifier for the audio system. We were told that we should blow the dust out of the tubes periodically to eliminate this problem! If Subaru knew about this problem, why wouldn’t they do that as part of the routine maintenance program? We were very upset and let them know that we think that this should have been a “RECALL” item!"

Charles M., LA (2013 Subaru Legacy Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

What Owners Say

Glass defects

"Drivers door window has intermittent problem: at random times electrical mechanism will only roll window up about an inch then stops. Have to release and retrigger the switch 10+ times to get the window up. Apparently it is a known problem that requires a "reprogramming" of some sort as was explained to me at the dealer service, but the dealer can't do the (warranty) repair unless the mechanic witnesses the problem.
