Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Road Test

At first blush the Subaru Legacy is a great all-around sedan, thanks to its standard all-wheel drive and reasonable price. But dig a bit deeper and you'll realize that is selling the car short. This is a car with very few compromises, effectively blending an excellent ride, responsive handling, a roomy and quiet interior, great visibility, simple controls, and easy cabin access front and rear. This all adds up to a package that puts it among the top performers in our ratings of midsized family sedans.

Sure, the Legacy doesn't set hearts racing based on its nondescript looks or its respectable-if-unexciting acceleration numbers. But with best ride and among the best handling and braking of its competitors, it topped the category in nearly every other measure of track performance.

What Owners Say

Android Auto

"The problem remains intermittent. The connection will drop out every 10 to 30 minutes and have to be disconnected then reconnected. I have not determined if the issue is with my phone or the car."

Anonymous, (2018 Subaru Legacy Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Voice commands on steering wheel is inoperable. Have also replaced head unit(blank screen)"

Anonymous, MA (2018 Subaru Legacy Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Randomly, it just won't detect Android Auto. Only fix is to do a factory reset on the infotainment, which takes about 30 seconds. Then reconnect. Annoying that I lose all my settings."

Anonymous, GA (2018 Subaru Legacy Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Android auto will no longer connect with my display/touch screen."

John J., NC (2018 Subaru Legacy Sport 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Radio

"I had issues with the free 3 month promotional starlink/sirius radio installed on the vehicle. After the 3 month promotion, sirius kept sending a pop up on the radio screen to purchase the subscription. There was no way to get rid of the pop up that constantly would come on the screen at every engine start up and at random. I cancelled with Sirius, yet pop ups kept overriding my system. I complained to sirius, subaru car dealership and took the car in for repair. Nothing worked to remove the annoying pop up. Subaru said it was installed internally on an antenna built into the system. I dealt with this issue for a long time. I also had a problem with the sirius station. It could not connect to the satellite of where I lived in Hawaii and that pop up kept showing up on my screen as well. This was a very frustrating experience. After many calls to Subaru they finally created a software update to eliminate my problem. Problem was eventually solved, but I had to deal with the issue for more then 1 year."

Anonymous, HI (2018 Subaru Legacy 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Almost from the very start I noticed that a popping sound would happen when using Sirus/XM radio or apple car play. The poppoing sound happens when a song with more base plays, however if you turn down the base it can still happen. I have identified this to Subaru on 4 different occassions and they still cant figure out what is wrong. Although this sounds like a minor problem it happens almost everytime I drive the car. Oddly I have never heard this happen on the regular AM/FM band."

Routine software updates

"It was not a 'problem' it was a recall update because of potential error showing gas level remaining"

Anonymous, TX (2018 Subaru Legacy 3.6R 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

"Tried to install update to GPS navigation update that I received from Subaru. Would not install completely and took whole system down. Car was drivable, but no electronics worked tied to the navigation screen, radio, gps, etc. Eventually Subaru issued a recall on the electronics that seemed to fix the problem. Have not tried to update the navigation system since, but don't think that was the problem. It was more likely a bug in the navigation software that wouldn't allow the update. Working fine now."

Anonymous, MN (2018 Subaru Legacy 3.6R 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

Paint/Trim

Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling), loose interior and exterior trim or moldings, rust.

What Owners Say

Loose exterior trim or moldings

"Plastic drivers side fog light cover fell off and was lost on the road twice requiring replacement twice."

"front passager bumper was off a little bit. got if fixed with in a week"

Anonymous, CT (2018 Subaru Legacy)
Loose interior trim or moldings

"Once while my husband was driving us, the accelerator refused to respond to foot pressure, and car stopped (inside parking garage). Engine ran but at idle. He tried repeatedly to press accelerator, which would depress only slightly, and engine did not respond to this pressure for almost five minutes. Then suddenly, engine began to respond, and car moved ahead normally and he drove it home, wondering when/if that would occur again. That night he found, loose on the driver's side front floor, a sizeable chunky plastic trim that he later discovered belonged on the front of the driver's seat's left slide rail. The next day he took car to dealer. A trustworthy (he thinks) service writer had two separate good mechanics independently test drive car, with instruments; however the problem never materialized. Both the service writer and my husband suspect that this black plastic trim trim may have fallen off the slide rail, and MAY have lodged unseen under the accelerator, preventing foot pressure from pushing accelerator far enough down to increase engine speed beyond idle. Or is there something fundamentally wrong with the drive system, at least of this one vehicle? Either way, there is a safety defect, as the cuttting off of the motive power could have been extremely dangerous in traffic or under speed. In any case, for the ensuing 10 months,, my husband has not trusted the car and admits he probably never will, since we don't know the cause of the problem with any certainty -- a sad commentary on a $30,000 expenditure. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to inform you of this auto's puzzling problem. I have had one other trim problem. The second time my husband went to gas up the car, he could not even open the door to the gas tank. We had to wait two weeks before the dealer could obtain and install what turned out to have been a defective gas door assembly."

Electric System

Alternator, starter, hybrid battery and related systems, regular battery, battery cables, engine harness, coil, ignition switch, electronic ignition, distributor or rotor failure, spark plugs and wires failure.

What Owners Say

Body control module

"Primary control module in the dash needed to be completely replaced. We needed to return to the dealer after the first repair to correct continuing problems resulting from wiring not getting re-connected properly, and some parts of the entertainment system still do not function consistently. We have decided not to purchase this vehicle after the lease is up because of this issue."

Warning lights

"Warning lights for brake system, check engine, Auto Transmission temp, driver assist, skid control plus possibly some others all came on at once (panel lit up like a christmas tree). Problem turned out to be a failure of electrical engine shutter control. This failure had nothing to do with any of the systems indicated, but according to service, it is deliberately programmed this way to force people to service the vehicle quicker. This problem re-occurred at least twice in the last year, so it is a relatively common issue. It the first case, the dealer replaced the motor that drives the cooling shutter and this was covered under the warranty at no cost. The second trip to the dealer, they claimed it just needed hosing out and reset all the computer warning lights. The diagnosis and reset of the warning lights was charged at approximately $150.00. The major problem by far on this becomes the completely false indication provided to the driver of major system failures that should render the car inoperable to carry on driving safely, when in fact, this is a very minor system only intended to improve on fuel economy. The false indication is serious, and according to the service department, deliberate flaw programmed into the computer."

"3 trips to dealer. They were not able to identify nor rectify the upper dash rattle. Probably because it sat in a heated service dept. for awhile before a mechanic looked at it, thus the problem never reared its ugly head. However, I have never had the pleasure of driving in a heated area. Especially in December, January, and March. In Michigan. Just hoping the rattle goes away come summer. Maddening enough to not consider a Subaru again. This is my 3rd Lagacy in a row (2012, 2015, 2018) but the first two were rattle and squeak- free. Same body all three."

What Owners Say

Alignment

"Steering on both the Legacy and Outback is a bit unstable compared to our previous Toyota Avalons. The Legacy steering turned out to be out of alignment shortly after purchase and one tire was 10 pounds too high. Very strange. The dealer shop people were not as gracious as you would think they should be when a brand new car is having issues."
