The Subaru Outback has a quiet cabin, a spacious rear-seat and a capacious cargo area. Handling is good in routine driving, but clumsy when pushed to the limits. With its four-cylinder engine and CVT, the Outback gets very good fuel economy for this class. Acceleration is just adequate, though, and the engine can be noisy when it's pressed. The optional six-cylinder engine is quieter and quicker, though less fuel efficient.

Sam E., MA (2010 Subaru Outback)

"Awsome in bad weather and especially in the snow"

Peter W., NY (2010 Subaru Outback)

"For a 4 cylinder engine, acceleration is great. Handling is good but not great."

Robert W., NC (2010 Subaru Outback)

"It does not accelerate as well as the Subaru Impreza I used to own, especially driving up steep inclines. Handles going around curves well."

Stephanie S., NY (2010 Subaru Outback)

"Car rocks & bounces due to high center of gravity and springy suspension. Would prefer a tighter suspension."

Anonymous, AZ (2010 Subaru Outback)

"Feels firmly planned in all situations. Throttle response is abrupt and the brakes are sure, but the pedal feel it's mushy"

Jim O., KY (2010 Subaru Outback)

"We do very little driving in high density, urban type of traffic so drive less aggressively when we are in it. Vehicle is more than satisfactory for the type of driving that we do as far as acceleration and handling is concerned."

Anonymous, ON (2010 Subaru Outback)

"plenty power. smooth ride"

Anonymous, WY (2010 Subaru Outback)

"Great excelleration. The six cylinder provides plenty of power. The heavier weight does require more steer input from driver"

Anonymous, MI (2010 Subaru Outback)

"The Outback handles well but acceleration is a little sluggish, especially to our 2014 Forester."

Anonymous, IL (2010 Subaru Outback)

"4 cylinder is ok, but if you're looking for power, this heavier than average car needs a bigger engine."

Marc F., MN (2010 Subaru Outback)

"six cylinder engine makes for a smooth responsive ride. Would not buy the 4 cylinder"

Alex W., MA (2010 Subaru Outback)

"all wheel drive helps in winter"

Anonymous, IL (2010 Subaru Outback)

"Vehicle drives smoothly considering it is only a 2.5 litre engine."

Anonymous, FL (2010 Subaru Outback)

"Being all wheel drive my 2010 Subaru Outback can motor through anything. You never have to worry about it gripping and staying on the road rain, snow or shine."

Anonymous, FL (2010 Subaru Outback)

"Handling is good. Acceleration is adequate but would be nice to have a little more."

Anonymous, MN (2010 Subaru Outback)

Anonymous, CA (2010 Subaru Outback)

"Very reliable"

Gregory F., FL (2010 Subaru Outback)

"With the 6 cylinder engine, acceleration is terrific. (The 4 it tested was whimpy. The sacrifice of 2 m.p.g. was worth it.) Vehicle handles well and is very tight. No sign of any aging after over 8 years. Terrific!"

Richard N., MA (2010 Subaru Outback)

"Poor acceleration Rolly-polly handling at high speeds"

Anonymous, CO (2010 Subaru Outback)

"Very good handling in snow / ice."

Anonymous, MN (2010 Subaru Outback)

"extremely slow acceleration"

Anonymous, OH (2010 Subaru Outback)

"Car is very smooth. Accelerates well for an AWD. The 6 cylinder engine makes a HUGE difference. I've had 4 cylinder Outbacks for loaners from the Dealership and they are all dogs! Still not a big fan of the CVT tranny. If you're going to get an Outback, get a 6 cylinder."

Anonymous, OH (2010 Subaru Outback)

Anonymous, IL (2010 Subaru Outback)

"Responsive & the accelerator is not as sensitive as the Forrester."

Richard C., NY (2010 Subaru Outback)

"Car is easy to drive and handles well in snow and ice- was the only vehicle getting through on our snow covered forest roads due to its higher clearance and sure footed handling. Much better than my expensive German sedan with 4WD"

J C., OR (2010 Subaru Outback)

"adequate acceleration and great handling in adverse weather."

Anonymous, NM (2010 Subaru Outback)

"Head room was lacking a little, but they resolved that in later models. Everything else has been well worth every penny spent. Snow storms - never stuck. Front driver tire dropped into an unexpected 2-foot deep hole. The bumper pins broker and disconnected the bumper. Cost $50 in labor and a new pin to put back in place. This car is made to take a bit of a hard hit with a class act comeback."

Denise O., WI (2010 Subaru Outback)

"powerful response even after 7 years, excellent in winter wearther"

Anonymous, ON (2010 Subaru Outback)

"Comfortable on long trips."

Donald S., MA (2010 Subaru Outback)

"Great accelation and handling"

Anonymous, FL (2010 Subaru Outback)

"I really like the ride and handling of the 2010 Outback. I hear Subaru has stiffened the ride in newer models. But for me, in New England, where the roads are consistently in bad shape, I like the softer ride. Acceleration is not great but good enough for day to day. It's certainly no sports car."

James A., MA (2010 Subaru Outback)

"The car handles very well. I have never had any problems getting around even in heavy snow."

Anonymous, MA (2010 Subaru Outback)

"Slow and noisy acceleration"

H M., DE (2010 Subaru Outback)

"Works well for driving dirt roads (good clearance) and snowy roads."

Anonymous, CA (2010 Subaru Outback)

"I love how my Subaru handles in all types of weather. I use all season tires and never had needed to use studded tires because of how well it handles in the snow/ice. We have the V6 and the pick up is amazing."

Anonymous, ID (2010 Subaru Outback)

"The acceleration lags and is slow on the Outback."

KIMBERLY V., WI (2010 Subaru Outback)

"On the highway, in distinction from in town/city, we average 30-37 mpg."

Anonymous, CA (2010 Subaru Outback)

"This is the first year of the redesigned outback. Ordered the v6 because I didn't like the CVT transmission in the four cylinder. The six cylinder has tremendous acceleration, but the hesitation in the electronic programming for the throttle is disconcerting during a rolling stop. There is also suspension noises coming from the from end when going over bumps, which has been checked at the dealership a few times only to be told that everything is tight. Not impressed."

THOMAS D., NH (2010 Subaru Outback)

"I like the CVT transmission. It feels more powerful than I would expect for a 4 cylinder engine."

JAMES P., MI (2010 Subaru Outback)

"I am a nurse and have to get to work no mater how bad the weather is. This care has gotten me to where I need to be every time."

Anonymous, NY (2010 Subaru Outback)

"Acceleration is not great when there are 4 adults in the car when merging on the highway. Have to really press the gas pedal down to get up to speed quickly. Handling on non-smooth roads makes the car bounce all over. Have to grab a hold of the wheel tightly."

RICHARD L., NY (2010 Subaru Outback)

"Sense of safety on the road. Handles well, solid frame, all wheel drive protects occasional need to divert to muddy roadside, seats high enough for good visibility"

Anonymous, NC (2010 Subaru Outback)

"It lacks good acceleration but handles well & gets good mileage."

WILLIAM M., CA (2010 Subaru Outback)

"Suspension just right for my driving. Acceleration, well, I miss the turbo in my 2005 Outback, but not having to use premium gas. I want the mileage, or I'd get the 6 cylinder."

CAROL A., NJ (2010 Subaru Outback)

"The 2010 Outback's suspension system makes it difficult to fell 100% in control when turning. The backend of the car feels like it is going to give-out and slides in the opposite direction of the turn."

Anonymous, CT (2010 Subaru Outback)

"we have had recently, lots of vibration and had read about this happening. We've taken it into the dealer twice and they say they can't find anything wrong with it. However, the vibration (which is not constant) continues to happen."

Anonymous, IA (2010 Subaru Outback)

"It gets me where I want to go in the snow."

CARL S., NJ (2010 Subaru Outback)

"Room inside Ease to drive Good mileage"

ROBERT C., AZ (2010 Subaru Outback)

"good handling"

LARRY S., PA (2010 Subaru Outback)

"just love the oerall vehicle except the styling like the 2005 and 2006 body style of oduback wagon"

LARRY B., NJ (2010 Subaru Outback)

"Drives great in the snow without chains, the AWD works wonders and saves major time not having to deal with chains."

Anonymous, CA (2010 Subaru Outback)

"Its winter/snow/bad weather performance is superb."

Anonymous, PA (2010 Subaru Outback)

"Cornering and handling could be improved. Reduce road clearance by 2 inches ?"

CHRIS T., NJ (2010 Subaru Outback)

"Handling. I live at 7,600 ft. on East side of Rocky Mountains. Roads coming down from this elevation are very curvy with many sharp turns. Had WRX/STI rear stabilizer bar installed by Dealer($250 parts and labor) greatly improving handling, mainly understeer. Can only do this on 2010-12 models."

GEORGE M., CO (2010 Subaru Outback)

"Good acceleration with the 4 cylinder engine and CVT transmission. Handles well on snow and ice. Downside is a nagging shimmey in the steering wheel at highway speeds that the dealer was never able to rectify."

ROBERT W., VA (2010 Subaru Outback)

"Excellent pickup speed and superior handling. I feel comfortable and secure in this vehicle in all driving conditions in the Pacific Northwest."

MENA Q., WA (2010 Subaru Outback)

"The 2.4 L engine and manual transmission are inadequate for the heavier weight of the larger 2010. I've had the clutch replaced twice. I've had the transmission rebuilt twice also."

JEFF W., CA (2010 Subaru Outback)

"The only problem I had was that I did not realize how wide it was, which causes problems in parking"

TOM J., OR (2010 Subaru Outback)

"Superb acceleration and handling under the most dangerous conditions."

JACK L., NJ (2010 Subaru Outback)

"4 cylinder has great acceleration and gets good gas mileage."

Anonymous, OH (2010 Subaru Outback)

"Good - Highway MPGs. Visibility Bad - Weak acceleration. Sloppy handling. Steering wheel vibration at around 55 MPH"

Anonymous, PA (2010 Subaru Outback)

"not a big fan of CVT engines. too noisy although the newer ones are quieter. I will test drive maybe a 2017 outbavk to determine engine noise of cvt."

Anonymous, PA (2010 Subaru Outback)

"We opted for the 6 cylinder engine because we live in the mountains and need the power for uphill driving. AND I LOVE LOVE LOVE the higher clearance, as it makes it much easier to get in and out of the car as well as handling dirt roads."

SUSAN C., NC (2010 Subaru Outback)

"acceleration is sluggish. It doesn't handle as beautifully in automatic as it does in gear"

CLAUDIA S., CA (2010 Subaru Outback)

"slow acceleration as compared to the 2013"

ARTHUR G., NJ (2010 Subaru Outback)

"We had his and her Porsches (911/CayenneS). Because our Subaru has a flat 6 engine just like my old 911, the lower center of gravity makes handling similar to Porsches!!! We lent this car to our daughter and she raves about the acceleration and handling."

Anonymous, CA (2010 Subaru Outback)

"evan after 6+ year the car handles very will. the 3.6R engine is very responsive"

Anonymous, VT (2010 Subaru Outback)

Gail R., PA (2010 Subaru Outback)

"Good car easy to drive & vert comfortable"

Anonymous, BC (2010 Subaru Outback)

"Ride is good as is handling. Seats are a bit short on cushion length and position is a little cocked to the side."

Anonymous, MN (2010 Subaru Outback)

"Driver's seat is uncomfortable when driving long distances (I am a heavy woman with back and hip issues). Road noise when one or more back windows are down is deafening when highway driving. Except for the above the ride is smooth."

Stephanie S., NY (2010 Subaru Outback)

"Ride comfort and seat comfort are like a magic carpet ride, but still handles very well. A not to drive even after over 8 years."

Justin S., AL (2010 Subaru Outback)

Terry Q., MA (2010 Subaru Outback)

"too much noise traveling with window down (not traffic noise). good ride, seats could be more comfortable but not bad."

Anonymous, TX (2010 Subaru Outback)

"Plenty of space. Back seats convertible to extend trunk. Good all around view. Quiet ride."

Nikolaus G., VA (2010 Subaru Outback)

"Good legroom, comfortable seats, very good hvac, great visibility"

Donald S., MA (2010 Subaru Outback)

"Super comfortable"

Erika S., NV (2010 Subaru Outback)

W J., TX (2010 Subaru Outback)

"This is a very reliable car, with no operational issues at all. However, the ride is harsh, and there is a lot of road noise, except on new and smooth asphalt."

ROBERT E., WA (2010 Subaru Outback)

"Due to the side bolsters the seats are uncomfortable for my wife, as are the rear seats for myself & my son. acceleration & braking not as good as I would like. Some of the issues have been resolved in 2016. The audio, phone system is to complicated for spouse. I only drive it when necessary, handles very well even when over max 900 lb load except for braking & acceleration, cornering etc ok. Need to increase max load to 1,100-1,200 lbs & only comfortable for 4. Need to eliminate the drive line"

WILLIAM M., CA (2010 Subaru Outback)

"Seats can be easily adjusted for comfort and those riding in the back seats are always comfortable."

JOAN R., MD (2010 Subaru Outback)

"The AC cycles in and out, and when I say out I mean it goes from cold to tepid. I don't think this is a defect. I suspect this is due to a deliberate design decision. Either way it is very, very annoying. Also, vent placement and adjustment could be better."

M H., OH (2010 Subaru Outback)

"The ride is very comfortable but The air conditioner is weak"

Anonymous, WI (2010 Subaru Outback)

"Seats are very comfortable and adjustable, but the car does get quite a bit of road noise."

BETTY S., VA (2010 Subaru Outback)

"the one thing that bothers me is the climate control....it is very poor. On a hot (80's) day i can have the a/c on full blast and i'm still warm. It's also a very loud fan. The only other complaint i have about this car is the low beams are very low, and yes i have had them replaced. They just don't shine very far or wide at all."

LESLIE D., PA (2010 Subaru Outback)

"can drive 8 hours to Maine with no pain, seats are very supportive.. Noisy only if I insist on opening windows. Ride is great over dirt roads in Maine, far better than my daughter's Jeep."

BRIAN D., MA (2010 Subaru Outback)

"Respectable fuel economy, lots of room for its class, and sure-footed driving in less than ideal conditions."

Lowell F., MB (2010 Subaru Outback)

"This vehicle can go anywhere, do anything and never needs anything except routine service. My wife drives the 2017 Honda CRV, but this is my favorite vehicle I’ve ever owned and at age 78 I can report that I’ve owned and driven Cadillacs, Mercedes, you name it."

D S., AZ (2010 Subaru Outback)

"FOR $30,000, ALMOST 70,000 TROUBLE FREE MILES, SO FAR. JUST ROUTINE MAINTENANCE."

Demetra F., NY (2010 Subaru Outback)

"Outstanding. Continues to operate without any problems using routine maintenance."

Dave S., WA (2010 Subaru Outback)

"very reliable vehicles, this vehicle has seen a lot of asphalt and still drives as it just left the dealer, the only item I really dislike is when a headlight is burned out and you have to take it apart to change the bulb."

Anonymous, AB (2010 Subaru Outback)

"One of the reasons for purchasing the car was due to it's collision safety ratings. A solid, strong body and frame was one of the criteria that had to be met when we purchased this car."

Anonymous, ON (2010 Subaru Outback)

"Great car: very reliable and safe, good driving in all weather situations (all-wheel drive). Very little repair/maintenance costs."

Nikolaus G., VA (2010 Subaru Outback)

"Great value for AWD. Also the CVT drive train is good for fuel and smooth on acceleration. We will buy a Subaru again."

Anonymous, OR (2010 Subaru Outback)

"Not much has changed in the way of looks so mine can pass for new. It simply does what it promises to do and does it well."

Marietta M., CA (2010 Subaru Outback)

"The entire drive train has been perfect, everything still works perfectly, it looks nice and is rust free."

Bill L., IN (2010 Subaru Outback)

"The car is an incredibly good value. It is well built, dependable and comfortable."

Stephen L., FL (2010 Subaru Outback)

"The 2010 Subaru Outback is an amazing vehicle. It is quiet, comfortable, roomy and economical. But, they do have some electrical sensor issues that they cannot explain. The vehicle runs fine, then all the dash lights start to flash and you loose cruise control. I took it to the dealer, they charged me $600 to replace the oxygen sensors. 2 weeks later, on a long road trip, it happened again. Took it to the dealer they couldn't explain it. A couple of months later, it happened again. Frustrated, I disconnected the battery and let it sit for 10 minutes. I have not had a problem since. They can't explain it."

"best bang for the buck - no other vehicle comes close re value"

Anonymous, IL (2010 Subaru Outback)

"For everything it can do (people hauler, box hauler, trip to home improvement store hauler) its hard to beat. Its like driving a multi tool everyday. It can be anything you need it to be."

"excellent vale for practical car underpowered"

Anonymous, ON (2010 Subaru Outback)

"Required comparison shopping to find the right model and mix of features. Able to find a deal in home town for a great price. Maintenance costs have been minor, because we diligently follow the recommendations for service. Two round trips to Alaska thru Canada showed how well the Outback can perform."

Anonymous, UT (2010 Subaru Outback)

"It is a solid, basic vehicle with easy maintenance and good performance."

J C., OR (2010 Subaru Outback)

"The car has been reliable. Capacity to drive in comfort. Down size for this model year is acceleration on mountain roads."

Mike S., CA (2010 Subaru Outback)

"the Outback has been dependable transportation in all kinds of weather, for a reasonable initial price. Not too many problems in 7 years and 90,000 miles....wiper motor, gas cap, a couple instances of mysterious stalling."

Don B., WI (2010 Subaru Outback)

"At 170,000 miles, I never had any problems with the car. All required maintenance was done per owners manual. I expect this car will drive another 200,000 miles. Most awesome car ever."

Denise O., WI (2010 Subaru Outback)

"A very practical and trouble free auto at a good price. Lots of storage space and the all wheel drive comes in handy when caught unexpectedly in snowy weather"

Gordon Z., WA (2010 Subaru Outback)

"Checked on internet and got a good price."

"It's been a great value overall. Nice ride and handling. A little underpowered maybe because of the original CVT. It's been in 3 accidents and still going. Mechinically has been very reliable but a little worried now at almost 120,000 miles regarding problems I'm hearing regarding the CVT. Want to keep as car for almost 16 yr old daughter but nervous about CVT longevity."

James A., MA (2010 Subaru Outback)

"The vehicle handles very well in adverse driving conditions and get good gas mileage."

Anonymous, NM (2010 Subaru Outback)

"Subaru is a reliable, sturdy, workhorse that drives smoothly and quietly."

Anonymous, CA (2010 Subaru Outback)

"The subaru is a good reliable 4wd car with lots of room. My only complaint is the gas mileage. Subaru is very environmentally conscious in their manufacturing, but they don't seem to be making significant strides on getting better mileage and are lagging behind on the hybrid and electric areas."

Anonymous, GA (2010 Subaru Outback)

"all aspects of the car are better than I thought...I really like this car...it drives up and down mountains, does well on dirt roads, does well in bad weather, is roomy and comfortable, I take it to 11,000 feet elevation, deep into the prairie, hall rocks and go hunting and fishing in the Rocky Mts. it goes where I do, with ease."

MILES E., WY (2010 Subaru Outback)

"Got a strippy model as far as electronics and wish had gone for more features"

Anonymous, CO (2010 Subaru Outback)

"Very low operating costs. Expect good resale."

"Still amazed at the amount of storage in this vehicle. We have had multiple comments from others in disbelief about how much we can pack/haul when traveling or transporting gifts/groceries. It's like Mary Poppin's purse!"

JUSTIN-KATRINA J., IA (2010 Subaru Outback)

"We thought long and hard about buying this car. I wanted to minimize our system costs and this car did not disappoint me. Again, aside from routine maintenance, we've had NO serious expenses with it. The bonus is that I can haul some pretty long pieces of wood in it, reconfigure the seats and go to a concert that evening. That is to say, it's both utilitarian and spiffy. When we first took delivery of it, I rarely saw other Subies in the concert hall parking lot, Now we see lots of them. The sec"

"Great car, good fuel mileage, and reliable but the paint scratches very easy. Even the Subaru dealer said it is soft paint."

JOHN R., UT (2010 Subaru Outback)

"Excellent value. Solid depndable car, great mileage."

DAVID C., MA (2010 Subaru Outback)

"I bought this 2011 car used in 2013 with 5000 miles on the odometer. I figure that I saved $25000 off the price of a new one. I figure on keeping this car at least 10 years and 150,000 miles, maybe more."

"A great deal"

EDWIN M., IL (2010 Subaru Outback)

"Extremely Versatile, good gas mileage, all wheel drive vehicle"

KEITH L., CA (2010 Subaru Outback)

JERRY A., NC (2010 Subaru Outback)

"It is 6 years old. It seems to be older."

THOM K., WV (2010 Subaru Outback)

"A little too "tall" compared to our previous Outback. Made our older Yakima bike roof mounts hard to reach. Side view mirrors would not bend in as in older Outback. Later found out Subaru only changed this feature for one year due to consumer complaints re: this issue!"
