More than just a wagon, the Outback is an intriguing alternative to a traditional midsized SUV. It has more cargo space than most seemingly larger competitors, less thirst for fuel, and a lower price. Functionally, it does everything most midsized SUVs can do -- except tow a heavy load. Subaru has split the difference between a wagon and a crossover, creating a winning combination.

What Owners Say

"I love, love, love iSight. (The intelligent cruise control and automatic braking.) This was the number one factor for buying the same make and model car a year later. The tight turning radius was a pleasant surprise and a definite plus."

Kathryn W., CA (2016 Subaru Outback)

"Acceleration could be a bit better but is acceptable for a 4 cyl."

Michael K., CA (2016 Subaru Outback)

"I got the 3.6 engine. Makes getting on the parkways with their short entrances so much easier. No regrets paying more for it."

Paul S., CT (2016 Subaru Outback)

"With the 3.6 engine, the power and acceleration is there when you need it. The vehicle reacts well in evasive steering with minimal body roll."

Larry E., MD (2016 Subaru Outback)

"V-6 is lacking in power when pulling out into traffic."

Gary R., CA (2016 Subaru Outback)

"Handles beautifully! Acceleration great!"

Anonymous, TX (2016 Subaru Outback)

"nice smooth handling- it's my wife's car and she loves how it drives. it's her 5th Subaru (lease every 3 years)"

Anonymous, RI (2016 Subaru Outback)

"Lots of road feedback, good visibility which is very rare these days."

Michael W., CA (2016 Subaru Outback)

"This car just keeps growing on me. It's fun to drive (despite it's emphasis on utility) My favorite place to take it is rural mountain highways. It just feels good. Tight in the corners and plenty of power to pass cars and climb hills. On the flip side it's comfortable too. Shortly we bought it I was driving through a perpetual interstate construction zone. The first thing I noticed is how smooth the ride was. This stretch of road was so rough our other cars rattle our teeth out. The..."

"Handles very well. Acceleration of 2.5 is barely better than 2.0."

Tom L., CO (2016 Subaru Outback)

"The all-wheel drive four cylinder Outback is zippy and handles well even in the Colorado's most rugged mountains, where we live. We have bought many new cars and trucks over the years, and the Outback is the best car we have ever owned, including somethat coast twice as much."

Mark O., CO (2016 Subaru Outback)

"Overall I like how this vehicle drives, it has a very nice ride. I do feel it is starting to be underpowered as it seems everything else on the road keeps getting quicker and the Outback hasn't changed much over the years, but I'm fine trading off acceleration for fuel ecenomy and the overall capability of the car is impressive. If only they made an electric version, it would be my perfect car!"

Trevor S., AB (2016 Subaru Outback)

"4 cylinder engine could be more powerful and fuel economy could be a bit better"

Anonymous, MD (2016 Subaru Outback)

Anonymous, FL (2016 Subaru Outback)

"We live in the mountains and the 4-cylinder engine has lots of power. The CV transmission is smooth-shifting and fun. The car takes curves very well, no lean, good steering. We cross 4 mountain ranges to get to our nearest supermarket and this is a great car to have. Previous generations of Outbacks just seemed cheap and flimsy and small."

Lee T., VA (2016 Subaru Outback)

"The V-6 engine gives oomph and instills confidence int he driver while getting unexpectedly good mileage."

William L., NY (2016 Subaru Outback)

"I enjoy driving this car. Almost bought another one to have 2"

T W., PA (2016 Subaru Outback)

"Smooth, constant delivery of power when accelerating, even on a hill."

Stephen B., IL (2016 Subaru Outback)

"My only disappointment is handling at freeway speeds. It's a box on wheels. We had to slam on the brakes at 65 and it was a very squirrely response. We maintained control but just. I'm accustomed to German cars which I often drove at very high speed and could count on in a pinch. This Outback has the power to go fast but not the footing if trouble arises. Very soft and unstable suspension in my opinion."

Anonymous, OR (2016 Subaru Outback)

"Handles well in the snow. Have passed other cars stuck on a hill"

Anonymous, OH (2016 Subaru Outback)

"Very impressive performance from the CVT transmission with excellent mileage."

Anonymous, CT (2016 Subaru Outback)

"A 260-horsepower V6 combined with AWD makes the Outback much more fun to drive than any other family SUV I've tested. It doesn't feel labored on the highway like smaller SUV's with under 200-hp at speeds above 70, and it has deceptive acceleration from 20-50 mph which is over 80% of my driving. But what I really want to talk about here is the single most important feature in me getting this car and something I won't live without in any family car I get in the future: Adaptive Cruise Control. "Poor performance on dirt washboard roads. Noisy and compromised handling."

DOROTHY A., ME (2016 Subaru Outback)

"safety features eg. warning systems"

E C., PA (2016 Subaru Outback)

"This Subaru drives exceptionally well. It's smooth and has great handling. The iSight safety features are impeccable, helping to ensure that the car is at a safe speed, within the lines, etc. Makes changing lanes and driving in Atlanta traffic a breeze. The iSight intelligent cruise control also makes road trips MUCH easier. Highly recommend."

MICHELLE M., GA (2016 Subaru Outback)

"Noticable hesitation in engagement of CVT when shifting from reverse to drive. Don't notice any slippage underway in reverse or drive however."

RICHARD H., NM (2016 Subaru Outback)

"acceleration is sluggish and cruise control manipulates the throttle back and forth a lot on hills"

GREG D., SK (2016 Subaru Outback)

"Amazing turning radius. Handles roads well in all road conditions, particularly when cornering. Feels very safe and swift on twisting roads. Great visibility, which is slightly worse for very tall drivers (6'3" or over."

Anonymous, IL (2016 Subaru Outback)

"Poor emergency acceleration, when even partially loaded, to the point of being unsafe. The turbocharged 4 cylinder should be an option in this vehicle in addition to the 6 cylinder, as it is in the Forester. Handling is very good but the ride quality with one passenger is harsh and abusive, causing the dash, door panels and all door frames and gaskets to rattle and squeak on just about all road surfaces. With less than 4000 miles the body and interior panels/dash rattles and squeaks exceed m"

"The excellent safety features assist in handling."

JEROME K., VA (2016 Subaru Outback)

"Generally good, but it could use more torque for acceleration, better brakes for faster stopping, and a firmer suspension and lower ground clearance for better inroad handling. Off road performance is unnecessary 99.9% of the time for me."

WILLIAM J., CA (2016 Subaru Outback)

"A little difficult to keep in a straight line while driving on freeway as if steering is in sport mode. Must concentrate to keep it straight. Need to have it checked by dealer."

HAL B., CA (2016 Subaru Outback)

"Took awhile to master the accelerator - it has a lot of tension which you have to get used to otherwise it jerks a bit. Other than that, it is easy to maneuver, and as I have the adaptive cruise control, I have had great highway experiences, as the car adapts quickly and yet smoothly when someone jumps over in front of me."

Anonymous, PA (2016 Subaru Outback)

"It's a 4 cylinder with great acceleration and handling especially on curves. I love the adaptive cruise, blind side and rear notifiers and rear camera."

Anonymous, ID (2016 Subaru Outback)

"Consumers recommended the 6 cylinder and it exceeds our expectation. Highway pull outs are swift and smooth and handling quick and agile. Car feels like it is hugging the road and very smooth. It drives like a heavy luxury car with agility and controlled maneuvering. Thank you for the recommendation because it went against our frugal selves."

"Transmission takes at least three seconds to shift from reverse to drive after the shift lever is moved. I've gotten honked at by other cars I've been blocking because the transmission doesn't engage quickly. Very annoying!!"

Anonymous, CO (2016 Subaru Outback)

"The only complaint I have about this vehicle is the lackluster acceleration. While not terrible, there is a noticeable difference between this vehicle and our others."

Anonymous, AZ (2016 Subaru Outback)

"The ride is very jerky. It downshifts suddenly when coasting, but inconsistently, leading to sometimes being jerked, and sometimes not. But being a CVT, there shouldn't be ANY actual "shifting", or at least not enough to feel jerky. I'll say I noticed this on past Outbacks I had rented, but during numerous test drives didn't notice this, and figured they had fixed it. It's even worse coming from a manual, but I've driven many other automatics that don't jerkily downshift while coasting."

ERIK B., DC (2016 Subaru Outback)

"The Subaru Outback provides quite good acceleration. While there wasn't a category for the Eyesight feature, I wanted to comment that it was my first experience with semi-automated driving beyond cruise control. The eyesight cameras and algorithms do a remarkable job providing variable cruise control, performing great on trips and even usable around town in heavy traffic. The collision warning feature is very good - the salesperson demonstrated the feature to us on an open road, clearly Subaru h"

JIM M., FL (2016 Subaru Outback)

"CVT transmission may produce better gas mileage but delays acceleration unless in manual mode. Handling is very secure both on normal paved roads and poor (gravel/snow/ice) surfaces."

Anonymous, AB (2016 Subaru Outback)

"In the 95 Volvo which was replaced by the Subaru and the 76 Mercedes which we still drive the steering is precise and accurate and one feels connected to the road. Not so in the Subaru. It is very easy to oversteer which can made driving more stressful. One reason is that the steering wheel diameter in the older cars was larger allowing small corrections in steering to beamed more accurately."

FREDRICK S., CA (2016 Subaru Outback)

"I was surprised at the pick up. Very satisfactory for a small engine"

JERRY C., IA (2016 Subaru Outback)

"I bought the larger 3.6 engine which is better matched to the weight of the vehicle and performance is very good for an AWD vehicle. The engine is very quiet and does not have to work hard with the CVT. The CVT is very intelligent in mountain driving for climbing or breaking assist."

NINO D., VT (2016 Subaru Outback)

"Acceleration and handling are superior to other products. Good value for the money."

SAMUEL L., GA (2016 Subaru Outback)

"The Outback with a 4 cylinder engine is a bit under powered at highway speeds. It is fine in local driving conditions but at 70 mph is downshifts and struggles up hills and has little acceleration left for passing. I should have bought a 6 cylinder and will consider the Outback with the bigger engine next time I'm looking for a new vehicle."

SCOTT A., MN (2016 Subaru Outback)

"As a 4 cylinder, acceleration is a shortcoming. For this reason most people buy the Outback 6. But since I live in a semi-rural area, the relatively good gas mileage makes up for it."

WILLIAM A., FL (2016 Subaru Outback)

CARIN M., CA (2016 Subaru Outback)

"Handling is OUTSTANDING. The 2.5 engine is somewhat underpowered for the body weight. However fuel economy is terrific, which mitigates the lackluster acceleration."

BRIAN G., OR (2016 Subaru Outback)

ROBERT S., NJ (2016 Subaru Outback)

"Very responsive steering. Great suspension. Acceleration/deceleration is not real smooth at very low speeds."

ROBERT S., PA (2016 Subaru Outback)

"This vehicle handles better than many sedans especially on windy roads which is surprising when it is so high off the ground. We bought this for our other home that is 5 miles back a dirt road. It drives just like on a paved road. Much better than 4 wheel drive or tryiong to drive a car back there."

HAROLD S., IL (2016 Subaru Outback)

"It has the flat 4 boxer-style engine but accelerates as well as my previous V-6 Honda Accord. Handling has been very good although the steering is a little more "twitchy" compared to my prior Honda. I haven't driven it enough in bad weather to state how well the 4-wheel drive responds. If the weather is really bad, e.g. snow, I usually drive my RAM in 4-wheel drive mode."

In the summertime it ends with desert tempatures that pass 115 degrees and in the winter mornings often begin below 0 on the mountain with snow. I have never missed a single day of work due to snow, and have never needed my chains since I purchased my Outback early Dec 2015. I have passed many cars installing/removing chains, or stuck due to the lac"

JON B., CA (2016 Subaru Outback)

"Before purchasing, I did a lot of research and read a lot of reviews. Some people complained about sluggish acceleration with the 4 cyl engine & cvt. I find that under normal conditions, the acceleration is fine, but I may change my opinion after an upcoming trip through hilly country. So far, with only 2000 miles, I am happy with the power and fuel economy of about 30 mpg, driving with the A/C on 100% of the time."

"Electronic power steering gives little feedback. Outback is affected by Midwestern crosswinds. Four-cylinder has good power for most situations, except when an extra boost would be welcome when merging onto busy highways; or passing on two-lanes."

MIKE H., IA (2016 Subaru Outback)

"I chose this model, over the Forester, because of the much greater towing capacity. With the 2.5L engine, I can barely haul 4 Americans. Forget hauling a real load. So, I will trade this car in on the six cyl model or a different car. And I am a diehard outback lover with 40 years exp as foreign car shop owner. Extremely disappointed."

"I was skeptical about getting my first car with a CVT. Now that I am used to not feeling the shifts, it's something I no longer think about. I do not drive aggressively, but I feel the acceleration is more than adequate. The overall mileage we have gotten (mostly state roads and around town, with little expressway travel) is 26mpg, which is better than our 2005 Honda Accord (25mpg). I was not sure where to list this, but the adaptive cruise control, which took some getting used to (always co"

CYNTHIA H., WA (2016 Subaru Outback)

"The 2.5 liter pzev engine gets great mileage but acceleration is slower than I'd like. Not so much because of the small engine but because the CVT allows the engine to rev too high when I feel like it would accelerate better at a lower RPM. Letting slightly off the gas for a moment will allow it to "up shift" and accelerate again."

"The car sometimes lags when accelerating. The handling is soft. The EyeSight system normally works well but when using the Adaptive Cruise Control it surges when you change lanes, regardless of what is in that lane (car not too far ahead). It also slows (as it should) when approaching another car and beeps but this is often missed and I find I'm following a car going slower than I would like."

"Considering: 4 cylinder, no turbo, weight of vehicle. It is not the Hemi in our truck and we didn't expect it to be a turbo road car. The only 'issue' to be considered is that the engine does not have full 'OOMPH' until it has warmed up just a bit, maybe just a few miles of driving. It can be a bit hesitant if you expect too much acceleration (getting out in traffic, etc) right after leaving the garage. But under most conditions, it is just what we expected and does very well for the mileage"

"The throttle is incorrectly tuned such that it is incredibly touchy at the bottom of the throttle curve. As a result, trying to maintain a constant speed in manual transmission mode at the bottom of the throttle leads to an incredibly jerky ride. It effectively makes manual mode unusable. Additionally, the general steering and handling of the things is squishy and flaccid. The Impreza is way way tighter and more sportslike."

"I have the 3.6 liter engine which has plenty of power. This is my first car with a CVT transmission. I don't know if it is the CVT or the larger engine but when accelerating from a complete stop, the car jumps forward quite quickly. It is a little difficult to start moving smoothly and not send passengers backward into their seats. I do like the fact that this car can pass a vehicle quickly when necessary. Kathleen R., VA (2016 Subaru Outback)

"First... the Outback drives well. It feels secure in handling and it tows about 2,300 pounds without complaint. Now, the one characteristic that could be improved is that the CVT has a delay when starting from a stop or accelerating from a moderate speed coast. Qualifying statement - Adapting to the accelerating characteristic is relatively easy, but is most notable when you have a different primary driver."

Jesse S., NC (2016 Subaru Outback)

"My Outback saved me and my family when a care next to us hydroplaned and did a 360 degree spin. The automatic braking and stability control allowed me to avoid a collision and come safely to a stop in the breakdown lane of the highway."

Paul M., NC (2016 Subaru Outback)

"Handling is truckish. This is my first Subaru (of 5) with the 6 cylinder boxer engine. I am very pleased with the engine performance especially as most of my driving is at or above 6500 feet in elevation. A naturally aspirated engine takes a big performance hit at altitude. Not pleased with the lack of a manual transmission. The CVT is a huge improvement over the slush boxes of the past, but I have always preferred to stir my own."

"Acceleration is adequate, handling is very competent. Overall ride is balance between SUV and mid size auto."

Len S., IL (2016 Subaru Outback)

"I feel the handling is terrible considering the Subaru reputation. The car will slide if you hit a bump while taking a curve or a corner. The tires they provide leave you wanting for a better ride and more control. Traction in snow is horrible even with the ESC turned off. Turning on the X-Mode only works until 20mph, leaving you slipping and sliding when trying to make a lane change or turn a corner while driving in wet snow. I’ve had a problem with the transmission up-shifting in both 1st and 2nd gears since I got the car. I was told it was due to the new transmission on this vehicle and that nothing was wrong. Also there is a long delay engaging the transmission when shifting from reverse to drive. It’s long enough that if you hit the gas too fast it slams into gear. This car just doesn’t live up to the Subaru reputation considering I paid over $38000 for it!"

"I love how the Subaru handles. Love the “paddles‿ to accelerate and de-accelerate. Love, love, love the cruise control system that sets the distance from the cars in front of you. We take only this car on road trips because it is so much easier to set the cruise control and let the car automatically brake and accelerate to maintain the proper distance rather than continually stepping on the brake and gas pedals. Also love the blind spot indicator - will never buy another car without one. The back-up camera is very nice - easy to read even in the sun."

"Unbeatable snow performance. The 8.9 inch clearance enables it to walk thru the bulk of situations you'll be experiencing. If it gets much deeper, you need a snow mobile. Extremely satisfied with mountain driving performance: smiles all the way up and down Berthoud Pass highway (the summit is 11,300 +/- feet, just off I-70 outside of Denver). Not the greatest acceleration rate (if you want that, buy a Hellcat!!) but much more than good enough. Even at a mile high, performance is great."

"We bought the 6 cylinder engine and it is SWEET! Acceleration up steep grades is effortless, even when loaded down with gear, mountain bikes and a 100lb dog. Very happy we spent the extra money for the boxer 6, worth every penny. Used True Car is get best price then custom ordered car without sunroof or I-sight emergency breaking system to save money. Unlike Consumer Reports I think the emergency breaking is dangerous on highway. How does car know if semi-truck is on your tail?? In this case emergency breaking could cause you to be rear ended. Rick S., TX (2016 Subaru Outback)

"I also own a Honda CRV and the difference in handling is very noticeable. The Outback's handling is less responsive and feels heavy and sluggish as compared to the CRV. Additionally, the Outbacks accelerator pedal requires more foot pressure when first pushed. Thus causing quicker than typical starts from a standing position. "Car seats are available in a light color as opposed to black. The CRV silver is no longer available in light color. Very important in most sunny southern states. Noise level much better than the CRV. The big plus that the survey missed is the several driving assist features available. i.e. Lane control, automatic braking, speed control 5 mph increments, expansive rear view camera, side mirror car warnings, etc."

The shoulder belt design n the driver's seat is terrible for anyone under 5 foot 2 inches. The seatbelt cross right against the neck of a shorter driver, regardless of seat adjustment and belt adjustment.. This may be the one reason I don't buy another vehicle just like this for my spouse.
