Subaru XV Crosstrek

The Crosstrek is basically an Impreza hatchback with a higher ride height, added body cladding, and large wheels intended to give it a more rugged look. The regular Crosstrek's 148-hp, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine helps it deliver a frugal 26 mpg overall, which made it among the most fuel-efficient SUVs in the class during its time. But this compact vehicle doesn't provide as much cargo room as most small SUVs.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"Low center of gravity and handling provide a nimble driving experience. All that is ruined by the dull and whiney CVT and underpowered engine."

Anonymous, IL (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"CVT requires a light touch on the gas. Too much pressure on the gas pedal results in high revs and little acceleration. Kind of like the old Buick Dyna-flo. Won't win any drag races with this car. Aside from the analog speedometer and Tach, the instruments are very hard to read in daylight. The little screen between the speedo and tach is virtually worthless. Replace the little "how many miles per gallon" gauge with a standard analog gas gauge."

DANIEL T., NV (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Very noisy vehicle, passenger compartment needs better isolation or insulation from road, engine and drive train noises."

Anonymous, GA (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Transition from electric to gas from a stop is clunky and uneven. 'Mild' hybrid yields little benefit in actual use. OEM tires were worn out at 20,000 - 25,000 miles. Original tires were out of balance at highway speeds. Complete lack of tow hooks or attachment points. Difficult to jack up due to very small jack points. Good acceleration and handling overall. Disappointing gas mileage."

GREG D., MT (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Under hard acceleration, in particular highway onramps or on steep inclines, the motor sometime pings. We use top tier, regular unleaded gas from stations that appear reputable. Subaru service could not reproduce the problem or find any problem."

Anonymous, WA (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Handling and braking are excellent. Acceleration, even with the 5sp MT is a bit weak. Even more so with the CVT."

ROBERT H., CA (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Feels underpowered. Handles great though."

Anonymous, PA (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Although I usually use cruise control on the freeway, I have gotten OUT of trouble by stomping the accelerator hard, getting out of cruise control and away from trouble."

JANET E., IL (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"It is a little underpowered, especially when driving in the mountains."

SCOTT I., TX (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Good on snow esp uphill Have had problem w starter (prolonged start) was fixed once and now acting up again. Will have to take it n again"

Anonymous, NY (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"The power is adequate not abundant. Steering is sure and can feel the road easily."

Anonymous, HI (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Needs better acceleration from a stop and the CV transmission needs to cut the lag time when it is engaged."

Anonymous, CA (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"One issue is that it does not accelerate quickly when going up a hill or sometimes when accelerating from a complete stop when the air conditioning is on."

Anonymous, CO (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Hybrid "thunks" when electric turns on and off"

Anonymous, OR (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Acceleration is good for a small SUV but the handling in snow is FANTASTIC"

TIM D., NH (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"It drives well although a bit noisy on the highway."

Anonymous, NC (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"It handles very well and I like that the car is light as we tow the car behind our motorhome. Just which the engine was a little more powerful."

Anonymous, TX (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Responsive acceleration and handling, smooth turning. Not sluggish or stiff!"

Anonymous, MI (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"ride seems as good as day one. no rattles squeaks etc.a taut ride, not cushy. handles rough snow covered roads well too"

David A., NJ (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Acceleration is good. Handles smoothly in turns"

Anonymous, MA (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Wimpy acceleration, wish it had a bigger engine."

Cheryl M., TX (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"poor acceleration, and poor mileage at the same time. burns oil, but Subaru claims not enough, (less than 1/3 quart per 1200 miles!!!) to replace the engine"

Anonymous, TX (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"similar to the Forester model but with Hybtrid technology"

T F., WA (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Transmission lags like a turbo."

Ken K., CT (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"fuel economy is good but acceleration is lacking and while driving on interstate the 2.0 is working very hard."

Ken B., FL (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"It took two years for gas mileage to go from 26 to 30 mpg with local driving."

Anonymous, NJ (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"All ok. Had prob w slow start process"

Anonymous, NY (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"I love the drive and handling of the Crosstrek. I would like Subaru to offer a power upgrade that doesn't include plug-in hybrid technology. Performance non plug-in hybrid would be sufficient."

Nathan C., OK (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"very precise handling. accelerates well for small engine."

Anonymous, BC (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"The Continuously Variable Transmission keeps the engine at the best speed for the amount of power that I demand, and it smoothly transitions engine speed and vehicle speed from a standstill to the speed limit."

Charles C., SC (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Handling is responsive and overall the car is very easy to drive. Acceleration is typically very good, but power can be underwhelming at times. The CVT transmission can occasionally slip and cause jerky acceleration."

Anonymous, VA (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"This was our third hybrid when purchased, being 4 years newer than the previous one, and it has the poorest electric performance and transition between electric to gas and gas and electric. There is a noticeable lag when the electric motor is first engaged. Very disappointing for a brand I've always trusted. We have owned six Subarus and this may be the last."

Charles N., NJ (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Very responsive car. A little under-powered driving uphill."

Anonymous, NV (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"It needs more horsepower. Merging into highway traffic takes patience and practice."

Anonymous, NJ (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"It handles beautifully especially in poor weather. I feel safe in this car."

Anonymous, MA (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"it is a great car - practical, great gas mileage, can handle any kind of terrain, and it is FUN to drive - fast, nimble, tough"

Deborah G., IA (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"A little slow to accelerate. Transmission seems to speed up rather slowly."

Sheri F., CA (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"This is a hybrid and the additional electric motor provides very good acceleration. Non-hybrids I have been in do not have the same amount of pick-up and feel a bit sluggish."

Gregory M., CA (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"The acceleration is adequate. The transmission is a little slow to react. Handling is good. It is not too soft or too stiff. It does not wallow in curves. Easy to park."

Steven O., MA (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Although a little choppy at time the car seems like it's on rail excellent handling."

Anonymous, PA (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Somewhat sluggish acceleration in rapid-response situations. Seems to improve if I use mid-grade gas rather than regular."

Anonymous, NM (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"This vehicle's acceleration is "low"...can possibly be risky in certain emergency-situations. And the handling is OK for an SUV, as long as corners are taken carefully and slowly."

Anonymous, CA (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"acceleration is sluggish"

Anonymous, DE (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"I live in a mountainous area and the Crosstrek’s engine really struggles at altitude. When on a road trip and need to pass another vehicle on a two lane road, there had better be no oncoming traffic anywhere in sight as it takes a long time to pass. Need another engine option!"

Anonymous, NV (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Accelerating with the Crosstrek SV hybrid is tricky. If you push to quickly you have a 'jack rabbit' start which is not good for several reasons. It takes quite a bit of getting used to and changes the way you are used to driving in other cars."

Barry B., OH (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"My Hybrid is very mild, making little difference in mpg. However, the Hybrid model came with a number of suspension and other enhancements which make it the best Crosstrek produced in 2014."

Greg D., MT (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"Wind noise from front window seals. Very comfortable seats for distance driving."

GREG D., MT (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"it is a noisy ride. Also, the air handling is not good, compared to the Volvo I used to have which allowed me to clean incoming air."

Anonymous, MD (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"More road noise than I expected."

Anonymous, NE (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"On warm days, the air conditioning has a hard time keeping the car cool."

CAROLINE F., OR (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Heated seats. Easy climate control."

SHERI F., CA (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"I love this car overall. I'm hoping the next generation has more comfortable seats and quiet ride."

Anonymous, OK (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Seat material under par but comfortable, Climate control is good, some squeaks and rattles, ride is on the harsh side."

JOHN P., NB (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"1. The seats are supportive but not very comfortable. 2. The CVT is not very smooth until the car warms up. 3. Overall, it is one of the best cars I ever owned."

CHAUNCEY C., MA (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Car has manual driver's seat adjustment. Clumsy for adjusting between drivers. Would like a better system next tme/"

RUTH S., NY (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Seats don't have enough lumbar support."

KATHRYN S., OR (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"You have to adjust the seats by hand.they need to upgrade the interior."

Anonymous, NY (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"The ride is not as easy as our Lexus was, but that's to be expected. But it's really hard and noisy."

STEWART B., CA (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"ac takes awhile , but the interior is black..; a little noisy on hi way sometimes check to see if a window is open , but I do have a moon roof"

STEPHEN G., PA (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"very comfortable driving position and good ergonomics. Like the controls on steering wheel as well as dashboard. Crosstrek is very stable and secure in harsh weather. AC works great, needed here in Sacramento Valley."

ROBERT M., CA (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"It's noisy at 55 mPH and faster."

SCOTT O., DC (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"The seats could be a little more comfortable. In long trips they can become a little uncomfortable."

ARLIN H., TX (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Very comfortable great drive position. It's the trip car for long rides it's quiet and great in all weather"

MCCONNAUGHY K., NE (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"We are unable to find a driver seat position that provided comfort, it was always uncomfortable. In particular the armrests were too firm and not located well. We added gel pads to the armrests and center console to correct the positioning and comfort. Our prior car was a Nissan Altima and we fondly remember its comfort relative to this vehicle."

Anonymous, WA (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Noisy at highway speeds."

RICHARD H., IL (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Controls for seat warmer are hard to reach."

Anonymous, NY (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Driver's seat must be adjusted manually."

WILLIAM B., NJ (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Engine with CVT is noisy - revs a lot -efficient but noisy."

J R., NM (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Seats could be better. Both the fabric and the overall durability. We suspect it might be the first thing about the car that will fail us. Btw, we're not overweight. Also, the A/C is sometimes inadequate for the Central Texas summer climate."

Anonymous, TX (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"the passenger seat raddled but was fixed."

RONALD S., OH (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Love the way it looks and drives. A fun car to own."

MARTHA G., NY (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Too noisy especially during acceleration but also gets to be tiresome on long trips"

Anonymous, KS (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"It is not a quiet ride. I usually have music on to distract me. I knew about the noise factor from your write up before buying it. The ride could be smoother."

Anonymous, WA (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Seats are very comfortable. Very little noise from outside. Smooth ride"

Anonymous, MA (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"The seats are comfortable for around town driving, but the fabric isn't as thick around the lower support bar, which can become uncomfortable on drives of 2 hours or more. There is moderate ride noise that is accentuated at highway speeds, but it is not unbearable. The ride quality is average and you can feel more of the road conditions than comparable small SUVs."

Anonymous, VA (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Seats very comfortable. Ride is also good. Very good off road on washboard dirt roads."

Cheryl M., TX (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Car is noisy when traveling over fifty mikes per hour Air noise Not well insulated"

Anonymous, NC (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"seats not comfortable"

Anonymous, DE (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Front passenger leg room could be longer. 5’11‿ passenger can’t stretch his legs."

Anonymous, NJ (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"The ride could be smoother. I previously had a Legacy and that was smooth."

Anonymous, NJ (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"It is noisy inside - seats are very low - sometimes hard on lower back."

Anonymous, ON (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Wind noise at highway speeds is excessive. Seats are very comfortable, even for long distance trips."

Greg D., MT (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"I have the touring package and the leather seats are very comfortable. They do not hold you as well as performance seats however. The noise level of the vehicle greatly improved with new tires - was a bit louder prior"

Gregory M., CA (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Outside noise level too high."

Anonymous, UT (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"The version I have included heated seats and mirrors, which have been lovely in winter. In general, the fabric seats are comfortable and reasonably easy to clean. Road noise is on the high side, but not unbearable. The ride is very nice, and it handles well on light off-roading, even when going fairly fast."

Helen H., CO (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Seats and ride are fine. Road noise drowns out the subtleties of classical music when I drive at highway speed."

Anonymous, ON (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"The vehicle is noisy inside, more noisy is you close the roof sunshade."

Anonymous, CT (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Noisy cabin, particularly rain noise"

Eric L., MI (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"The first generation Crosstrek is roomy and durable, but lacking in some comfort. The new generation is more comfortable with better materials."

Nathan C., OK (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Very good except need more leg room and lumbar support."

Ken K., CT (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Noisy,, umpires, not comfortable"

Anonymous, NY (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Selector switch for heated seats is not easily visible. Older models had a dial switch which was easier to manage without looking. Also the dial was harder to engage inadvertantly. Road noise is pretty high on Crosstrek"

Sophie D., QC (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Crosstek is a good vehicle. Acceleration is slow and the cabin road noise could be better. Hear the newer model has taken care of this"

Anonymous, NY (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Seats and ride are very good. Road noise is a problem: over 40mph you cannot hear the audio."

Anonymous, RI (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"The seats are all-day comfortable!"

Tim R., TN (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"As much as I love this car and it treats my family well the drivers seat does NOT provide enough support. After longer drivers which I do frequently my back is in rough shape. I believe this mixed in with the fact that I’m 6’1 doesn’t help in this smaller car. However I have driven a new version of this model and the driver seat seemed much more supportive."

David G., CT (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"There is too much cabin noise. I have to blast the volume of radio in order to hear it."

Anonymous, MA (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"I have the manual transmission and it is a pretty noise engine while driving."

Anonymous, NV (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"I don't think it was worth the 24K that I paid. A lot of the body is plastic, and scratches easily. The seats are cloth and get dirty easily. It is a hard car to keep clean"

Anonymous, MD (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"excellent value! Price for AWD, secure, safe driving, good mileage for size of car and AWD."

ROBERT M., CA (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Comfortable, zippy, and quiet!"

CHARLES C., SC (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"When I went to replace a 10 year old Forester, I found the new 2014 Forester models had gotten much bigger and more expensive, the Crosstrek was the size and price I was looking for."

BERNARD D., NE (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"You get a good, dependable, capable and safe car, I just wish it didn't cost as much as it did."

Anonymous, MO (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"subaru is the best value for AWD on market"

SHAWN H., CT (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Fair price for a GREAT car"

MARTHA G., NY (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"It was cheap new vehicle, very reliable and excellent in the snow."

KIERAN F., IN (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Well and thoughtful made vehicle for the price we paid. No problems what so ever in three years of driving."

JOHN T., ON (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Getting an attractive AWD SUV that gets great mileage for well under $26,000 was a great value. We live out in the country in Northern Wisconsin and this is the perfect vehicle."

JEFFREY G., WI (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Very reliable small car. Driven in snow storm on way home from hospital. Wonderful experience and also high enough off the ground to make the journey. Love my Subaru!"

Anonymous, NC (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"It's a very reliable and useful vehicle for a family of 3 in Colorado, and it's the coolest vehicle we've owned as well!"

LYNN W., CO (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"I would buy it again but would not get the hybrid. With no increased mpg, there's no value to the hybrid option."

BONNIE H., NJ (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Great car for the money if you stick with basic manual model. Reliable, good gas mileage and great in snow and mud with Subaru's well-known all wheel drive and top ratings in crash tests."

MARIBETH K., VA (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"The all-wheel drive has been great. A bit of road noise, but nothing terrible"

Anonymous, NS (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Subaru stood out in general for their AWD system. Compared to other brands, Subaru came in much less expensive, and was the only brand to offer cars smaller than an SUV with all wheel drive. I take my Crosstrek on light off-road adventures a few times a year - nothing extreme, but enough that lower clearance cars would struggle - and it's been an absolute champ. In Colorado winters, the heated mirrors and wipers are great. I just turn on the car and start the defrosters, and by the time I finish wiping off the roof, the windshield's melted and ready to wipe off."

Helen H., CO (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"it simply gets the job done in all weather, great in snow, good mpg, relatively trouble free. some repairs (wheel bearing, A/C compressor) but reliable"

David A., NJ (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Starts well in cold weather. With snow tires, manages deep snow very well. Air conditioner is a godsend in summer. Lots of cargo space without being a large vehicle. Gasoline consumption is higher than I had hoped for."

Anonymous, ON (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Love the car and I bought the cheaper model, so I got my money's worth. Great car."

Anonymous, NC (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Stylish and comfy to ride in, we go on long trips and enjoy the ride when we do. This is our third Subaru and it will not be our last."

Charles C., SC (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Great car. Very satisfied"

Mike G., CA (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"I have a long commute to and from work and this car performs excellent in all weather. Recently I have had a few mechanical issues which are consistent with the amount of miles on the vehicle, i was given a tip to call subaru directly to see what they could do to help. Subaru gave me a $500.00 voucher for any maintainence and or parts as long as the work was done in a dealership. I’ve never heard of any other car manufacturer doing anything similar."

David G., CT (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"The car is a good value for the smaill AWD sedan that it is"

Anonymous, NJ (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

How it looks inside and out

What Owners Say

"It stands out and people are always admiring and asking about it."

JEFFREY G., WI (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"The compact size not sacrificing comfort or cargo space; turning radius; electronic conveniences; security of control in challenging driving circumstances (rain storms)."

Anonymous, HI (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Exterior styling is probably Subaru's best effort yet. Interior on the MY14 is pretty cheap. Hard plastic everywhere."

ROBERT H., CA (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"Love how it looks, not boxy, and love the orange color. Its not boring like most other SUVs. Why so many boring colors out there?"

MARIBETH K., VA (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"I like the style of the crosstrek"

JOHN P., NB (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"I get great mileage for a non-hybrid and the car is very cute."

Anonymous, AZ (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)

"I really like the way the Crosstrek looks - I'm always quite pleased to look for my car in a parking lot and realize THAT one is mine!"
