Subaru XV Crosstrek

The Crosstrek is basically an Impreza hatchback with a higher ride height, added body cladding, and large wheels intended to give it a more rugged look. The regular Crosstrek's 148-hp, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine helps it deliver a frugal 26 mpg overall, which made it among the most fuel-efficient SUVs in the class during its time. But this compact vehicle doesn't provide as much cargo room as most small SUVs.

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Backup or other camera/sensors

"The backup camera intermittently blacks out. Is not "replicable" so dealership won't fix"

Debra F., MN (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Occasionally the camera just doesn't work. If I turn off and restart the engine, the camera works again. I learned from an on-line community that it could be because I put the car into gear too quickly after starting the engine, before all of the s"

Catherine D., PA (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"The camera would not function 1/10 of the time. They replaced and it works fine"

Anonymous, MI (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Would stop working at random"

Anonymous, NC (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
CD player

"CD player would no longer eject the CD"

Linda S., NH (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Display screen freezes up

"Display Freezes"

Anonymous, IL (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Multiple occurrences where display screen and audio freezes and is inoperable for several minutes. Dealer has checked it multiple times and can’t fix it."

Anonymous, MD (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"I bought Subaru's high end navigation system (added over $1000 to the vehicle cost). The gps navigation system never worked properly and often gave incorrect directions or couldn't even find the destination in its database. Then, the included CD player stopped working - the CD eject motor remained permanently engaged and so new CD's could not load. Now I can no longer connect my iphone through the USB port to play music, podcasts, audible books, etc. through the car's sound system. Finally, I cannot connect any new phones to the Bluetooth feature. Subaru's electronics are primitive, buggy work poorly and break down quickly. I refuse to go back to Subaru and pay thousands more dollars to have them fix everything that is wrong with their "premier" navigation product (ha ha)."

Anonymous, MA (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"It is so difficult to use that I gave up and never use it"

Linda S., MA (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Destination is not recognized in north and south carolina"

Robert O., ON (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"GPS frequently loses position fix, does not require, sometimes for several days"

Anonymous, MD (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"had to be replaced by Subaru. Defective. Sent me to the wrong places"

Anonymous, NY (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"System would not navigate. Re-boot failed to solve problem"

Anonymous, CO (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"The Nav system is completely unUSble. Both my wife and I spent hours trying to learn it. We use other navigation systems with no problem. It is effectively useless"

Anonymous, CA (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"The vehicle was missing the GPS SD card and we had to wait over a month for one to be provided by Subaru"

Peter S., ON (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"It is too complicated to use. When I tried to use it, I couldn't. So now I don't ever use it. I use an app on my iPhone."

Anonymous, MA (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"car stopped communication with my apple SE cellphone"

Andrii L., CA (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Will not pair with I phone"

Marilyn T., SC (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"In general listening to music via bluetooth is hit or miss. Connection is inconsistent , freezes, and music is played out of order and uncontrollable"

Anonymous, CT (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"The phone pairing is more complicated than it needs to be; too many steps! Voice recognition software is substandard; entering a phone number via voice is frustrating and cumbersome"

John B., ON (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"The Bluetooth no longer paired with my iPhone or my wife's iPhone."

Anonymous, HI (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid 2.0-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Phone pairing: sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. No rhyme or reason as to when this happens."

Anonymous, NV (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Bluetooth works for going thru car but call id does not display. Contacts will not transfer."

Anonymous, MD (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek)
Radio

"The radio/CD unit will on its own increase volume until it's unbearably loud. Cannot turn down volume (or turn unit off) until the ignition is turned off and the car restarted. Not "replicable" so dealership will not fix/replace"

Debra F., MN (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Occasionally does not turn on so not able to use"

Anonymous, MD (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Radio has recently occasionally stopped responding to channel / AM-FM change input."

Anonymous, NV (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"After listening for some time (which varies quite a bit) the radio will begin to squelch at maximum volume. Which will scare the crap out of you if not prepared. Currently when the radio drops out we will immediately turn it off for the rest of the trip. Again this problems occurs probably 5 or six times a year starting two years ago."

Anonymous, WA (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Voice control commands

"The voice command menus are convoluted; entering commands for phone numbers via voice is far more complicated that it needs to be; too often phone numbers get entered incorrectly, and need to be completely reentered when this happens"

John B., ON (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"None of the voice commands work, even with multiple attempts from multiple people. We have never once had a single command work. The voice command system on the Infinity works fine. So do voice commands, in the car, on both iPhone and Android"

Anonymous, CA (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"There is an overall problem with the audio system. I have had this checked several times but they say they can't reproduce the problem. This includes screen freezing during trying to dial a call (bluetooth), radio tuning off and on spontaneously, intermittent static and random noise from the audio system, and radio playing simultaneously during a phone call (bluetooth)."

Anonymous, MD (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

Electric System

Alternator, starter, hybrid battery and related systems, regular battery, battery cables, engine harness, coil, ignition switch, electronic ignition, distributor or rotor failure, spark plugs and wires failure.

What Owners Say

12V power plug

"Front console cabbie 12V power plug not working (not sure if it is fuse, haven't checked yet)"

Anonymous, TX (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Alarm or security system (excluding aftermarket systems)

"Alarm system is designed to intentionally drain the battery under certain circumstances. (Yes, that's what the dealership actually told me -- better to make the alarm go on for hours and definitely leave you with a dead battery than to cut it off after a certain period, assuming that the detection a false alarm and any thief would have long since given up.) A contributing factor to this issue is poor integration of the latches and sensors for the hatchback. The door will seem to be latched - it seems closed to the first touch, but if you try a bit, you can discover that there's some play. In this semi-latched state, the sensors can sometimes lead to the hatch being detected as open and sometimes closed. This can lead to the problem described above, where the alarm drains the battery because it thinks someone is actively breaking into the car for over an hour. Subaru's response to this was to try to train me in the science of decoding the various patterns of flashes of the alarm light on the dashboard, and to suggest that I wait a minute or two every time I leave my vehicle to see whether the alarm is fully engaged or only partially engaged."

Paul B., CA (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Clock

"Totally non intuitive not easy to change time. I don't know how to explain other issues with car."

Tire pressure monitor

"Faulty gauge"

Anonymous, NY (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
USB port

"USB port won't charge iphone or android. Dealer attempted and failed repair after multiple attempts by changing USB port and Radio. Item is still not fixed, but I got tired of going back and forth from the dealer to have the issue re-investigated; I gave up. Many people on Reddit report having the same issue with no resolve"

Anonymous, IL (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Warning lights

"The bulbs blew and needed to be replaced"

Anonymous, NY (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Warning lights would come on periodically, indicating that the car's computer had gone into "limp mode". This happened 4-5 times, and it took the dealership 4 attempts to finally fix the problem (which turned out to be some sort of problem with the computer software, which they resolved via an upgrade of the software)"

Paul B., CA (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, MI (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid 2.0-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"The trunk hatch, which I use every day, go stuck in the closed position. I took it immediately to the dealer to fix. They had no idea what caused the problem, but realigned the hatch catch. Since then, whenever there is a big rain storm, the trunk leaks and gets my therapeutic equipment wet."

Suspension

Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage (includes rack and pinion), power steering (pumps and hoses, leaks), wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension.

What Owners Say

Alignment

"Off the gate the car was pulling to the right. (We test drove a different vehicle so only learned about the problem after signing). I went to the dealership twice to fix this. It got better, but it still pulls to the right"

Igor P., AZ (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Ball joints

"was repaired under warranty"

Anonymous, PA (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Front suspension balljoints went out twice... and sound bad again! $1000 each time because they insist on replacing the whole control arm, rather than just the ball joints. I live on the world's worst road, but drive it very slowly! Just bought a '92 toyota pickup for driving up my 2 mile dirt road! 9 ground clearance ain't the same as a truck chassis! She ain't no Jeep!"

Alfred F., CA (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Power steering pumps and hoses

"Sometimes at low speeds the power steering warning light would come on, but the car was still fully operational. This turned out to be caused by a marginal battery terminal connection that was probably not the fault of the car, but happened when the battery was replaced and the battery terminal was not sufficiently tightened. Apparently this caused an intermittent battery connection and this showed up as a warning for the power steering at low speeds. I am very satisfied with this car."

Charles C., CA (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Shocks or struts

"the rear of the vehicle sags down with a normal load and the headlights shine into the eyes of oncoming motorists"

Anonymous, CA (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"After going to the dealership of purchase to have them look at a remote starter issue, I asked them to inspect the front passenger strut. It makes a lot of noise when driving over mildly bumpy terrain. They said it was normal sound which I disagree"

Anonymous, NH (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"It's possible the leaking strut was due to an accident (when my car was rear-ended while parked on the street) - but it was not detected at the time."

Anne H., CO (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
Springs or torsion bars

Anonymous, MI (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Front wheel bearing became progressively louder. Dealer could not our would not detect. Aftermarket shop identified and fixed."

Anonymous, MN (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid 2.0-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Passenger bearing started rumbling pretty good. My wife took it to the dealer, still indside the 5 year warranty, and approximately 22000 miles on the car, they wanted around $900 out of pocket for a warranty covered item. They charged $125 for a diagnostic fee. I fixed it myself."

Mark G., DE (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Very minor noise in the rear wheel causing noise/friction. The part to fix it was about $200, and completely fixed the problem. I am very satisfied with this car."

Charles C., CA (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"There was a fairly loud vibration noise that was diagnosed as bad wheel bearings in both rear wheels. Had the bearings in both rear wheels replaced."

Blower (fan) motor, A/C compressor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate control, refrigerant leakage, electrical failure.

What Owners Say

A/C compressor

"Bought the 2014 subaru crosstrek in February and in June when I went to use the air conditioning it did not blow cold air. Took it in to find out the air compressor and the condenser did not function properly and needed both replaced. It cost $2500"

"Failure, need replacement"

Anonymous, (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Unfortunately the problem would be Intermittent and because of this there was an issue tracking it down. I discovered the issue during the hottest day of the year while in NYC traffic."

Anonymous, CT (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"About a year after I bought the car, the a/C started blowing hot air intermittently. I took to the dealership I got it from. It was still under warranty from that dealership. They found a coolant leak, which they fixed and recharged. The next year, the same thing happened. Since it was no longer under warrantee, I took it to the Subaru dealer. They found a problem with the compressor and replaced. Works fine now."

Anonymous, (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Unsure 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"a/c frequently, randomly blows hot air. several times the dealer said they cannot find any problem. 12 month problem"

Ralph L., CA (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"This is by design: when in Electric (Hybrid) only mode, A/C compressor disengages. Meaning, A/C effectively shuts off. It goes into Electric only mode because it is a hybrid approximately 35% of the time"

Jeffery H., WA (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
Blower (fan) motor

"Blower fan motor was increasingly noisy, over a period of several weeks. Replacing the motor and the filter fixed the problem."

"Black material under front area easy to catch on parking barriers and tear; also dissatisfied that it is easy to puncture the underlying black liner even in low-impact collisions, such as backing into a garage pole."

Rust

"While repairing minor body damage due to a low speed fender bender accident, the body shop found that none of the sheet metal seams were properly sealed at the factory. So the seams of the internal body panels are all rusting out and this damage is irreversible. According to the body shop owner (whom I trust), I need to get rid of this car soon because the internal rusting will continue and the car will be junk in about 2-3 years. Since I am not in a position to get another car right now, I had to pay the body shop $1000 to repair the unsealed seams so I can keep this car until I can buy a replacement. This is the 2nd Subaru I have purchased based on the high ratings given by Consumer Reports and both Subarus have been defective lemons. I think Subarus are poorly built cars with antiquated safety and amenity features. My guess is Subaru is scamming your car evaluation surveys. I will never buy another Subaru"

Transmission Minor

Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.

What Owners Say

Rough shifting

"vehicle has a long delay shifting from reverse to drive, shifts rough when engine is cold"

Anonymous, GA (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"The CVT transmission in the new XV Crosstrek is not very refined and takes several seconds to shift from neutral/park to reverse or drive. The manual shift mode also does not truly override the system when using it"

Slipping transmission

"We brought the car to the dealer when it was driving strangely. Transmission problem was covered by warranty."

Anonymous, CA (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
Transmission computer

"Known issue with the transmission. Failed seal caused leakage which caused the transmission computer/sensors to go nuts (roughly 112,000 miles on the car). Had 6 emergency lights illuminate on the dash. Managed to get the car to the dealership under its own power. Some driving electronic aids were disabled, stability control, hill descent, cruise, etc...Long story short, the dealer covered the cost of the transmission (engine was pulled and it would have been a massive expense). I went ahead and had other maintenance work that was scheduled for 120K. I had plugs, head gaskets, cam gaskets and a new front half shaft installed (old CV joint was failing). Dealer covered the problem because I believe it was an internal bulletin, plus I had the complete maintenance history with the dealer so they called Subaru and covered it. The car is a decent car, the dealer helped change my opinion. Transmission failure on a modern car is almost unacceptable when its a normal passenger car that I did not neglect. High powered car would be different since they get driven hard usually."

Transmission Major

Transmission rebuild or replacement, torque converter, clutch replacement.

What Owners Say

Transmission rebuild or replacement

"Upon starting, every available warning light came on. Pulled out the manual and the remaining light indicated a transmission issue and that the car shouldn't be driven. Called the dealer and they said to drive it in. Argued with them and they wouldn't tow it instead told me to use my AAA. Later that day, my husband started the car. This time, only four warning lights came on and the only one which remained on was the ABS system. He drove it to the dealer. After two days, they told us it needed an entire new transmission and the problem was directly related to an issue with the hybrid system."

Anonymous, NJ (2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid 2.0-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Brought the car in for a scheduled oil change. I was told there was a small noise they were investigating and it was found to be the transmission. It took two weeks for the job to be completed. In that time i was given a free loaner and the entire job was covered under warranty."
