Face-Off: Ford Bronco Sport vs. Subaru Forester

Battle of the small, outdoorsy SUVs

In the world of look-alike small SUVs, the Ford Bronco Sport and Subaru Forester stand out by promising to take you away from the pack. Each automaker touts its SUV’s off-road readiness. They swap acceleration numbers and handling acumen with talk of adventure, versatility, and the promise to tackle rougher terrain than competitors.

In reality, buyers will spend the vast majority of their time driving these SUVs on public roads, not out in the wilderness. That’s why Consumer Reports’ auto experts have put them both through more than 50 tests and evaluations to find out their strengths and weaknesses. Think of them as wearing hiking boots every day, so that you’re always ready for adventure.

Buyers have told us what they want to know about the vehicles they are considering: What kind of mileage do they get? How easy are they to get into and out of? Which ones have the best mix of ride and handling capabilities?

    MORE ON SUVS

To answer those questions—and many more—we take an in-depth look at these two SUVs to compare how they fare in CR’s testing and surveys. We also note which advanced safety equipment—such as forward collision warning (FCW), automatic emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian detection, blind spot warning (BSW), and rear cross traffic warning (RCTW)—comes as standard or optional equipment. Then we let you know which car we think is tops.
