Luxury midsized SUVs are popular with families because they can carry both passengers and cargo in comfort. Whether you’re on a road trip, collecting kids in a carpool, or doing daily errands, you’ll find that cargo space is a key factor in how useful these SUVs are.

But published cargo volume numbers from automakers don’t reflect real-world use. Narrow openings and odd shapes can limit what fits, and luxury models often feature thick carpeting and interior panels that reduce usable space.

Consumer Reports focuses on usable cargo space. Our auto experts measure the largest rectangular box that fits in the cargo area with the hatch closed, providing a more accurate view of how much a midsized SUV can actually carry.

More on SUVs

Below, we’ve identified the luxury midsized SUVs with more than 35 cubic feet of usable cargo space based on our testing. They’re ranked in descending order of cargo room. Not every vehicle is recommended, either because of below-average reliability or a too-low Overall Score.

All of these SUVs come standard with automatic emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian detection, AEB that works at highway speeds, blind spot warning (BSW), and rear cross traffic warning (RCTW) unless otherwise noted.
