If you’re planning to carry more than five or more passengers and their luggage, a three-row SUV becomes a necessity. While a minivan is often the best option, most shoppers prefer midsized crossover SUVs. However, new models are expensive, and midsized SUVs rarely match the fuel efficiency of small or compact SUVs. To help you make a smart financial decision, Consumer Reports has identified several 5-year-old, three-row SUVs that achieved 20 mpg or better in our real-world testing.

Our selected group ranges from luxury models to efficient hybrids. Every vehicle on this list performed well in our tests, and all have average or better reliability, based on our Auto Surveys, in which we ask CR members to tell us what went wrong with their cars. This year, members provided data on approximately 380,000 vehicles.

MORE ON SUVs

These SUVs are also recent enough that their performance in our tests—such as those for acceleration, braking, and fuel economy—is on a par with brand-new models. Plus, many were available with active safety features such as forward collision warning (FCW), automatic emergency braking (AEB), and blind spot warning (BSW) as either standard or optional equipment. We’ve listed them in order of the overall fuel economy from our testing when they were new.

Armed with this data, which you can’t find anywhere else, you can narrow down your list to the used three-row SUV that best suits your needs.
