While almost every other midsized SUV had moved to car-based construction, the 4Runner remained an old-school, body-on-frame SUV, which was great for off-roading but not much else. The ride is unsettled and handling is mediocre at best. Limited trim versions have a sport suspension package with somewhat better control, but a stiffer ride. Off-road is where the 4Runner excels.

Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Satisfaction Owner Satisfaction To learn about satisfaction, CR has collected survey data from our annual survey on more than half a million vehicles. Our subscribers provide great insights into their satisfaction by answering one simple question: If they had it to do all over again, would they definitely buy or lease the same model? In addition, respondents also rate their cars in six categories: driving experience, comfort, value, styling, audio, and climate systems. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2015 Toyota 4Runner owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Backup or other camera/sensors

"The camera would stop and start working. It was a problem I had to bring to the shop three times. They found a loose wiring harness. I feel that the wiring harness was not secured properly on the rear door."

Anonymous, TX (2015 Toyota 4Runner Limited 4.0-L V6)
CD player

"Software issue due to memory card being removed from unit while unit was powered up. Not yet repaired because the dealers say they will have to keep the vehicle for a week or more."

Anonymous, TX (2015 Toyota 4Runner SR5 4.0-L V6)
Display screen freezes up

"The unit becomes unresponsive. Can't change volume, channels, etc"

S G., TX (2015 Toyota 4Runner SR5 4.0-L V6)

"Did this three times in a week Asked at dealer service about it, said it needed a software update, by appointment & I would have to pay for it since no longer under warranty I declined, hasn't reoccurred in over a month Keeping fingers crossed"

Anonymous, WA (2015 Toyota 4Runner Limited 4.0-L V6)

"The display/navigation screen will freeze, then after about 30-60 seconds the system will reboot itself and resume normal function. I think it is a fairly common problem with 4Runner models in 2015 and other model years close to 2105. Sometimes the event will not occur for two months, and sometimes it will happen two or three times in a single day if driving for several hours. It is more inconvenient than unsafe, in my opinion, but it does make me reluctant to use the navigation feature if driving to an unknown location. Instead, I opt for Google Maps. I have not talked to a dealership or repair shop since I purchased the vehicle used and out of manufacturer warranty. I perceive it to be an expensive repair of about $1,200 to $1,500 in cost."

Anonymous, TN (2015 Toyota 4Runner Limited 4.0-L V6)

"Was unable to do anything"

Anonymous, TX (2015 Toyota 4Runner Limited 4.0-L V6)

"While listening to music through my phone or the radio and while using the GPS system, the screen freezes up. Cannot turn the system off. It reboots itself after a few minutes. Dealer said it was a software issue and they had downloaded the update, but it's happening again."

Anonymous, CO (2015 Toyota 4Runner Limited 4.0-L V6)
Display screen goes blank

"While driving I was using the navigation system. Occasionally the screen when blank. The solution was to have the dealer reload the software with an updated software"

James L., NH (2015 Toyota 4Runner 4.0-L V6)

"Dealer was able to fix under warranty"

Anonymous, TX (2015 Toyota 4Runner Limited 4.0-L V6)

"This problem is actually one in the same as the other problem I reported with navigation/display screen."

Anonymous, TN (2015 Toyota 4Runner Limited 4.0-L V6)

"Computer seems to need some kind of reboot"

Anonymous, NY (2015 Toyota 4Runner SR5 4.0-L V6)

"It completely quit working, which also included the radio and phone"

Anonymous, KY (2015 Toyota 4Runner Limited 4.0-L V6)

"GPS has to continually be reset prior to starting with Entune"

Anonymous, CO (2015 Toyota 4Runner Trail 4.0-L V6)
Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"Bluetooth keeps dropping and randomly electronic consul seems to go."

Anonymous, CA (2015 Toyota 4Runner SR5 4.0-L V6)

"Entune consistently requires my phone to be rebooted prior to the radio acknowledging it"

Anonymous, CO (2015 Toyota 4Runner Trail 4.0-L V6)
Voice control commands

"lack of recognition"

Anonymous, CO (2015 Toyota 4Runner Trail 4.0-L V6)

Suspension

Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage (includes rack and pinion), power steering (pumps and hoses, leaks), wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension.

What Owners Say

Shocks or struts

"Off-road Bilstein front shocks included in the TRD Pro package had a "clunk" over sharp bumps during cold weather (temp below 45 F). Toyota, TRD and Bilstein studied the problem it took about 1 year and a 1/2 to come up with a replacement shock that would not exhibit the "clunk" in cold weather. Not a recall but a TSB where owner had to bring in the vehicle during cold weather to qualify for warranty replacement of new version of the front shock. Furthermore in my case, the dealer service tech f"

Anonymous, MD (2015 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro 4.0-L V6)

"One of the struts was leaking. Due to the 4WD system design, it required replacing the strut on the opposite, diagonal corner. Originally was told all would be replaced, but only one front and one rear corner were replaced under warranty. The concern is if one of the other ones leaks (out or warranty now) the. cost will be $1.5K-$2K."

Kevin M., AZ (2015 Toyota 4Runner Limited 4.0-L V6)

"One strut/shock had a leak. This required the strut/shock on the opposite corner to be replaced too. The 4WD design requires they be replace in pairs."

Kevin M., AZ (2015 Toyota 4Runner Limited 4.0-L V6)

"I own a 2015 Toyota 4Runner Trail. I modified the suspension with the same shocks as the 2015 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro vehicle. The rear driver side shock has failed and is leaking. The TRD Pro shocks are manufactured by Bilstein and made in Germany. The four shocks/struts have 40K miles on them in highway and city driving ."

Anonymous, NC (2015 Toyota 4Runner SR5 4.0-L V6)

"Fuel Pump Recall. Dangerous situation. Second recall! Still waiting for them to figure out solution. Again, I expect a lot of grief trying to coordinate this with the dealership, and I don't drive the 4Runner anymore to avoid stall at freeway speeds."

Anonymous, MI (2015 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro 4.0-L V6)
