Toyota's Avalon flagship is a sensible, roomy sedan that straddles the divide between high-end midsized sedans and true luxury cars. It's a large, comfortable cruiser and -- as our $42,000 Avalon Limited proved -- can be quite upscale. The Avalon scores among the better large sedans in the category and has been consistently reliable.

    Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

    Driving Experience

    Includes acceleration and handling

    What Owners Say

"It has strong acceleration if you stand on it, and nice manners around town. Handling is firm and competent soaking up bumps and potholes. I made extra effort to get a model with 17" tires vs the 18" that was on most of the cars on the lots, and the effort was worth it the ride is so much better with a little cushion over the rim. I just couldn't believe they put 45 series on a luxury sedan. My wife would be yelling at me for going too fast in the corners WAY before the 17" tires started to..."

Greg J., WV (2017 Toyota Avalon)

"Very comfortable car , best ride for the money Very little road noise"

    Anonymous, NV (2017 Toyota Avalon)

"Comfortable ride, good great engine, handles great."

    Anonymous, WI (2017 Toyota Avalon)

"Great acceleration and speed but also great mileage in eco mode, quiet, very tight steering."

    Anonymous, GA (2017 Toyota Avalon)

"The V6 in the Avalon has plenty of pep allowing easy on ramp speed. The blind spot feature is awesome, especially when driving on 3 or more lane interstates. We think the handling is responsive, but we aren't looking for the "sports car" ride."

Jerome B., SC (2017 Toyota Avalon)

    "plenty of power."

James W., GA (2017 Toyota Avalon)

"drives well, great acceleration and control. no noise."

Anita N., LA (2017 Toyota Avalon)

    "great acceleration"

Richard B., FL (2017 Toyota Avalon)

"The best car I have ever driven after my Lexus Ls. This is probably my last car ever. I feel safe, secure with family that includes chidren. Very responsive and despite being a family car"

Juan A., TX (2017 Toyota Avalon)

    "steering precise, responsive"

    Anonymous, ON (2017 Toyota Avalon)

"Very easy handling and super acceleration. Ride is comfortable."

Rita H., WI (2017 Toyota Avalon)

    "Excellent"

    Anonymous, MD (2017 Toyota Avalon)

"I find the handling of this large car to be very good. Its steering is taut and tracks accurately."

Joy H., MI (2017 Toyota Avalon)

"The new safety features, standard on the vehicle, make driving a pleasure; however, they operate only when cruise control is activated. This doesn't help in city traffic when cruise control is deactivated."

Donald S., GA (2017 Toyota Avalon)

    "Fun to drive."

    Anonymous, OH (2017 Toyota Avalon)

    "Responsive, excellent safety features"

    Anonymous, KS (2017 Toyota Avalon)

"Very responsive. Love the adaptive cruise control that keeps the proper distance."

Barbara S., TX (2017 Toyota Avalon)

    "excellent acceleration"

William P., CA (2017 Toyota Avalon)

Ron P., TX (2017 Toyota Avalon)

"Handles responsively and has good acceleration."

    Anonymous, TX (2017 Toyota Avalon)

"Trunk is big, but the lid opening is not wide enough to get large items in and out."

    Anonymous, PA (2017 Toyota Avalon)

"Ride is very smooth and it really has guts when you need to accelerate"

    Anonymous, CA (2017 Toyota Avalon)

"Has plenty of power when accelerating and the car handles nicely. The cruise control is jerky at times especially when cars are entering or exiting the highway. The transmission shifts at about 35 mph which is a common speed limit in this area so the transmission constantly shifts on secondary roads."

    Anonymous, MA (2017 Toyota Avalon)

"Very responsive controls. Excellent acceleration. Seats could be a little softer. Steering on interstates is very steady. Very little correction needed."

    Anonymous, NY (2017 Toyota Avalon)

"Accelerates very quickly! I can beat most cars off the line without feeling the car strain. It handles very lightly and responsively."

Lillian C., PA (2017 Toyota Avalon)

"The Avalon handles great. It has got all the passing power you need while staying smooth and comfortable. Stops on a dime, turns on a button. GREAT for a large car!"

Martin T., NC (2017 Toyota Avalon)

"My husband, who drives the Avalon, likes the drive but tells me that the Avalon hybrid hesitates when he needs to accelerate on the highway. It probably needs to have an additional power drive (like the Prius has) for highway driving. However, my husband does like the mileage improvement on the hybrid. His former car was an Avalon as well, but it was not the hybrid."

Stefanie B., FL (2017 Toyota Avalon)

"The acceleration and handling are terrific. I enjoy driving the car an the interstate and freeways mostly. City driving is responsive and handling is swift and agile in traffic."

Wayne S., AZ (2017 Toyota Avalon)

    "good and handling."

Tom T., TN (2017 Toyota Avalon)

"Would like the same safety features that are on the 2016 Prius"

Richard P., CA (2017 Toyota Avalon)

"We were afraid the hybrid system would be sluggish, BUT it is not. In sport mode, the car is a phenomenal performer! It shocked us, it is so good."

    Anonymous, CA (2017 Toyota Avalon)

    Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

    What Owners Say

"No matter hoe I adjust the driver seat I cannot find a comfortable position. Car is very uncomfortable on long trips."

Gregory V., CT (2017 Toyota Avalon)

"Quite, roomy, great seats, automatic safety assistance"

Robert G., AZ (2017 Toyota Avalon)

"If Toyota made Cadillacs or Buicks, this would be what they would put out. This car is big and effortless to drive. It has amazing electronics that enhance safety to a totally new level. I am glad to see a CD player still on the dash. It has been eliminated in lesser care lines. They must be aiming at an older demographic that has a large collection of CDs! I was surprised to see that the back seats DON'T fold down, contrary to most vehicles these days. They must have further assumed that ol..."

Dennis W., MA (2017 Toyota Avalon)

"All seating is very comfortable, with low wind noise."

Dan S., OK (2017 Toyota Avalon)

"Although my spouse finds the Avalon seats comfortable, I find the driver's seat a little hard for my taste; it feels to me like it could use a 1/4 inch more of padding. Around town, it is ok, but on longer trips, the discomfort factor makes the car unpleasant for me to drive."

    Anonymous, TX (2017 Toyota Avalon)

    "very low outside/road noise"

    Anonymous, NY (2017 Toyota Avalon)

"The car is extremely comfortable with a luxurious feel to the ride; it's like being in a concert hall, silent until I want the 11 speakers to fill the space with perfectly balance music. Given this sort of luxury I was pleasantly surprised at the tightness of the steering, rate of acceleration and ease of handling at a sporting rate of travel."

Bill K., KS (2017 Toyota Avalon)

"Very adjustible— heat and cool feature is nice. Ride is smooth and acceleration is super!"

Rita H., WI (2017 Toyota Avalon)

    "Most comfortable seats"

"Lots of leg room in the back seat"

    Anonymous, VA (2017 Toyota Avalon)

"The Avalon seats just cradle you. Very comfortable. The ride is whisper quiet and smooth around town. On the highway the car is smooth and comfortable but a bit too noisy for me."

Martin T., NC (2017 Toyota Avalon)

"Seats and ride are not as good as pre 2013 models"

    Anonymous, IN (2017 Toyota Avalon)

"We've driven 15 hr drives, only because this car is so comfortable (seats, ride, safety features)."

Kaye W., MO (2017 Toyota Avalon)

"passenger front seat does not have height adjuster. seat is too low"

    Anonymous, VA (2017 Toyota Avalon)

"Low noise, comfortable ride were the two top criteria I looked for. Home run on both!"

    M G., AZ (2017 Toyota Avalon)

"It is the perfect road trip sedan: you can drive for hours without feeling tired or needing to pull into a rest stop. Great engine, little road noise, and nearly impervious to rougher roads. Add satellite radio, and it's time to head out. Around town or on the highway, it is the safest car I've ever driven."

Daniel H., MS (2017 Toyota Avalon)

"Seats are very comfortable and ride is smooth. The main negative is there is a lot of road and wind noise."

    Anonymous, TX (2017 Toyota Avalon)

"Very good ride. Fairly good noise suppression. Seats are good."

Eric C., CA (2017 Toyota Avalon)

"Previously I had a 2013 Avalon and I found the overall comfort of the 2017 Avalon to offer more comfort and a better ride."

Jay P., TX (2017 Toyota Avalon)

"On all trips (long and short) the Avalon is comfortable and quiet. The seats are heated and cooled. The backseat gets raving good revues from our backseat passengers."

Jerome B., SC (2017 Toyota Avalon)

"As an elderly person, securing the seat belt into the latch is challenging."

Robert M., PA (2017 Toyota Avalon)

"Very comfortable ride. Handling is very good as well. The seats are not overly soft and are very supportive over long stretches while driving. Plenty of room in the back seat for 3 adults."

Philip W., MI (2017 Toyota Avalon)

"Love all the room in the Avalon! Seats are quite comfortable. Not as quiet as a Lexus, but quiet enough"

Ryan M., PA (2017 Toyota Avalon)

"Comfortable ride, with little to no outside noise"

    Anonymous, TX (2017 Toyota Avalon)

"The Toyota Avalon is the best Toyota has to offer without the upscale price of a Lexus. It does everything well . . . comfortable, great pickup, quiet and build like an anvil. We have owned 3 Avalons, the last one we owned 14 years."

    Anonymous, TX (2017 Toyota Avalon)

"Would like same safety features that are on 2016 Prius"

"very good comfort. seat could be more adjusrtable. good ride low noise"

Tom T., TN (2017 Toyota Avalon)

"The seat comfort is terrible!! There is no support or cushion. I had to buy an extra seat cushion to sit comfortably while driving. Avalons used to be EXTREMELY comfortable; and now you feel as if you are in an airplane seat...HORRIBLE!!!"

Wayne S., AZ (2017 Toyota Avalon)

    Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

    What Owners Say

"The Avalon XLE is the value leader of Toyota. You are getting a Lexus level car with a ton of engineering and attention to quality control for thousands less than the comparable Lexus."

John W., TX (2017 Toyota Avalon)

    "Good value through Consumer Reports"

George F., CA (2017 Toyota Avalon)

"I'm just starting out. I did not expect to get an Avalon, but the equipment level for 2017 is the same as in the 2018 Camry. Underneath it all, an Avalon is a Camry. But the standard Avalon equipment is advanced and the cost (with 0% financing for 72 months) is about the same as a similar Camry model. A three (3) inch longer wheel base adds to ride quality. I tested it on a bump near home. It does make a difference."

Dennis W., MA (2017 Toyota Avalon)

"It is a lot of car for the money"

    Anonymous, RI (2017 Toyota Avalon)

    Anonymous, CA (2017 Toyota Avalon)

"Very nicely appointed, excellent comfort and ride, but unfortunately very poor sound system. In a car this expensive the sound system is unexpectedly of poor quality and I think that impacts the overall value of the car."
