The Camry is a comfortable, refined, and quiet sedan offering a pleasant driving experience. Access is easy and controls are intuitive. Its comfort, room, and quietness suggest a larger, more expensive car. The four-cylinder engine is particularly smooth and refined. Stability control and side curtain airbags were optional on higher trim lines, making the Camry one of the first family sedans to offer these safety features.

What Owners Say

Emission control devices (includes EGR)

"Engine check light came on. My bad mechanic told me that I needed new catalytic converters. I ditched them and my new good mechanic tuned the car; the light went away for a couple of months. When it came back, he installed second-hand catalytic converters and I've not had this problem since then"

Larry K., OR (2002 Toyota Camry LE 2.3-L 4 Cyl)

"Check engine light goes on for a while then off. Dealer checked it, read the codes and says catalic converter is wearing out and due for replacement. That is to expensive in a 2002 car. This is the second converter on this car. the car runs fine. Will continue to drive my Toyota. Went to Auto Show. Not impressed with what is being offered at a reasonable price"

Mark B., CA (2002 Toyota Camry LE 2.3-L 4 Cyl)

"The Check engine light had bee on for some time. It didn't pass inspection, so the mechanic replaced the charcoal filter. The light stayed off for a month, but it is on again. I suspect a fuel/ fuel tank problem, but am ignoring it"

"Was rotting"

Anonymous, AZ (2002 Toyota Camry XLE 2.3-L 4 Cyl)

"It is my belief that the rubber O-ring that seals the gas cap is too hard and over time it loses its ability to hold pressure and prevent evaporative emissions. The history of this vehicle is that I have to replace the gas cap approximately every 20,000 miles. I do this when double checking the proper closure of the gas cap no longer prevents the check engine light from coming on. The O-ring on the newest gas cam seemed to be softer than in the past so perhaps Toyota has changed their specification for the O-ring."

Anonymous, OR (2002 Toyota Camry XLE 3.0-L V6)

"NO PROBLEMS"

Anonymous, QC (2002 Toyota Camry XLE 3.0-L V6)

"Because the car is not driven very many miles, the brakes, calipers, and rotors needed repair. I call this normal routine brake wear for a car that is hardly driven."

Bill S., IA (2002 Toyota Camry XLE 2.3-L 4 Cyl)

"Pads needed replacement; drums and rotors resurfaced front and rear."

Henry W., AZ (2002 Toyota Camry XLE 3.0-L V6)

"May not have been Camry's fault. Our building had brick work done and red brick dust got all over rear brakes that had to be replaced."

Anonymous, NY (2002 Toyota Camry XLE 3.0-L V6)

"It was just routine brake usage. This has been a great car"

Parking brake

""Backing plate" on one of the rear wheels rusted out. Mechanic advised not to bother replacing it, so parking brake now does not work. Since it has AT, I don't use the parking brake much"
