Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Road Test

The new Camry offers sleeker styling, but it's the improved fuel economy and handling, plus standard advanced safety systems, that distinguish it among the crowd of midsized sedans.

The Camry has long held the distinction as a competent, well-rounded and pleasant family sedan. However, it gets a bad rap among critics as unexciting. To address that perception, the redesign brings snazzier styling and slightly nimbler handling. The end result is mixed, but the Camry remains a competitive midsized sedan.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2018 Toyota Camry owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Backup or other camera/sensors

"Cameras did not read sidewalk curbs of various heights. Within 2 months, 2 curb collisions with front bumpers, nearly $1000.00 damage. Two of my colleagues have had 4 such events.!"

J T., CT (2018 Toyota Camry XSE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
CD player

"There is no CD player. I wish I had one. Also, touch screen controls are too distracting for safe driving"

Anne F., TX (2018 Toyota Camry 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Display screen freezes up

"Entire does not work with my iPhone. Only repeated calls to Toyota California advised work arounds. I still can't plug the phone in and use the GPS. Toyota sold this car knowing there was a compatibility problem and I still don't have what I paid for."

David O., GA (2018 Toyota Camry LE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Problems with the SCOUT navigation system accessed through the ENTUNE package. System locks-up, does not accurately position the car and therefore directions are wrong."

Anonymous, CO (2018 Toyota Camry SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Entune apps freeze periodically; have to restart Entune on phone to resolve, sometimes it does not. This renders the GPS unusable when I need it. Also navigation directions are not that accurate"

Anonymous, NJ (2018 Toyota Camry XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The screen froze and then started dialing telephone numbers by itself. I was able to stop the phone dialing by disconnecting my phone but the only way to unfreeze the screen, was to pull over to the side of the road, turn off the engine and then restart the car. This allowed the Entune unit to reset itself. Until I turned off the engine I was unable to use the Entune unit for anything. The knobs, volume controls and touch screen did not respond to anything."

Brian D., FL (2018 Toyota Camry XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Display screen goes blank

"I have taken it in several times, but it is still going blank"

Donald D., TX (2018 Toyota Camry 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The etune system and especially the Scout navigation system are terrible. Toyota should be embarrassed to have Scout installed. Ours drops off 90% of the time, then we can't reconnect to anything but the radio without stopping the car and shutting off the engine. The apps only run off a cell phone. There is no internal mapping or GPS installed. If I were buying again, I would purchase a different brand of automobile because of poor quality navigation and entertainment system on the Toyota Camry."

Scott W., FL (2018 Toyota Camry XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"Entune 3.0 does not work properly with my Apple iPhone 8 Plus. When connecting to the USB port, along with another USB device, the Scout Navigation GPS only works in Turns function; I.e., no map display. This feature works perfectly fine with a Samsung 8 phone (Android). Entune 3.0 is up-to-date, as is my iPhone 8. The navigation, through Scout GPS is slow and sometimes even inaccurate. Scout Navigation GPS with Entune 3.0 is inadequate, bordering on dangerous. I highly recommend NOT getting a vehicle with this feature. Shame on Toyota for pushing this system through an otherwise fine automobile."

Gary B., TX (2018 Toyota Camry XSE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Connecting iphone with entune doesn’t work in certain situations. USB connection stops working while usindg entune gps app."

Gordon H., MA (2018 Toyota Camry XSE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Awful system. I wish they had the Apple protocol system instead of the Entune. Poor system for pairing. Almost impossible to get any music except FM radio."

H G., NC (2018 Toyota Camry LE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The Entire system is pretty useless. From day one, it hasn't kept a connection. The navigation quits if a phone call comes in, even if one doesn't. I can't believe Toyota put this in the newly-designed model. Toyota grudgingly admits that there can be problems sometimes but blames everyone else. The say it will be fixed with Apple CarPlay in 2019 models. That doesn't help those of us with a 2018. It's very frustrating."

Rich L., NC (2018 Toyota Camry LE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Toyota must get their act together when it comes to their Entune system or so called stereo system. Per Toyota, the Entune is what customers want. Not me!! I had several problems that the emergency phone numbers you enter in the system would disappear which happened 3 times. You better have a very good data plan with your cell phone company, because you will use a lot of data for the apps that Toyota wants you to use. The Scout GPS system is the worse. Don't bother using. You are better off using a Garmin or the Google map on your phone. Toyota offers no Sirus or CD player. I have been able to convert some of my favorite CDs to a USB drive that I can use in the Entune system, but that takes time. At times my iPhone doesn't communicate with the Entune very well. I just took my Camry in for a 6 month checkup and they did update the firmware of the Entune. I'm now hearing complaints from friends that after they got the update, Pandora will not work. Looks like a know problem. I don't use Pandora because of privacy issues."

Gregory C., PA (2018 Toyota Camry SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Album art only shows while vehicle is in Park on 2018 Camry with Entune 3 plus. Toyota says this is a new feature but also say European model Camry shows album art at all times. Very annoying and not fixable. Selecting specific music while playing CD is only allowed when vehicle is stopped. Phone apps to make most (restricted) options work do not work. Infotainment system just locks up."

J H., TX (2018 Toyota Camry SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The Bluetooth connection for the first few months did not work all the time and Apple fixed. The GPS did not work until Apple fixed it. I was told a update from iOS made the bluetooth and GPS fail"

Alfred E., PA (2018 Toyota Camry SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Instructions to get apps to work on Entune 3.0 not clear. Had to contact Website help to obtain instructions to get the music system operating properly. Now seems to be OK. However, it does not always load properly, and sometimes it is necessary to disconnect and reconnect the system."

Gary S., FL (2018 Toyota Camry XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The entune system is junk, it doesn't work correctly and the Scout GPS is just as bad. I have to un-install and re-install the application on my phone constantly and then it only works for a day before it freezes up or has some type of problem"

Jeffrey M., FL (2018 Toyota Camry XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"same issues"

Gary T., FL (2018 Toyota Camry XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"It is too complicated for us to hook up our phone."

Justin D., CT (2018 Toyota Camry XLE 3.5-L V6)

"Starts playing music MP3s from phone by itself. Repeat visits to 2 dealerships did not resolve."

Anonymous, KY (2018 Toyota Camry LE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"It's baffling that a top trim vehicle in 2018 doesn't even have the option to add Android Auto / Apple Carplay They put it in the next model year cars which is built on the same software, but for some reason can't put it in this one. For navigation - you need to plug your phone in, download an app on your phone, and keep that app open in order for the on board navigation to work. It's the worst user experience I've ever had in a car."

Steven M., NC (2018 Toyota Camry XSE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The 2018 Toyota uses Entune 3.0 for the infotainment center. It is a piece of junk!!! I have to delete the Entune 3.0 app from my iPhone at least twice a week and then reinstall it to get it working. I have gone to the Toyota dealer where I purchased the car and all I got was agreement that the system is junk, I ignore the app most of the time but I need it for my navigation system to work as that is an app within the Entune 3.0 app `"

Anonymous, FL (2018 Toyota Camry SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"Could not log into Entune 3.0 for first couple of months (issue between Toyota and Apple?). Scout navigation system needs iPhone connected (USB). Drains iPhone battery and uses up data if you don't have unlimited plan."

Anonymous, CA (2018 Toyota Camry XSE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Scout GPS system only works about 50 % of the time. Will freeze up when it does work. Have contacted system developer on problem. They say working on it. It seems to be getting a little better, but stil not reliable."

Roderick B., CT (2018 Toyota Camry XSE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The Scout GPS stops working on a regular basis. Usually the app on my smartphone has to be uninstalled, then re-installed and that will fix it, but not always. Sometimes it's just down for a day or so. The other associated apps (Pandora, Slacker, etc.) will also be unavailable."

Anonymous, NH (2018 Toyota Camry XSE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The Entune 3.0 system is worthless. It doesn't work properly with my Iphone. It doesn't receive the automatic updates either. The moving maps doesn't work. The car has to be taken to the dealer to receive the updates. the GPS system the one time i used it gave the wrong address to a gated community. I had to park my car and use Google maps on my phone to reach my destination. Toyota should have used Apple Car Play instead of this useless Entune 3.0. It's a waste of a nice screen."

Anonymous, FL (2018 Toyota Camry LE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"this navagation system requires connection to a mobile phone. it frequently refuses to connect. when mandatory software update are installed setup data may be forgotten. i have given up and will install an aftermarket navitation system."

Anonymous, PA (2018 Toyota Camry SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"none of the apps work.. kn the 8 months since i purchased this car, the apps worked appr 2 weeks... took it to dealership twice and they were horrible... Once I boght the car they were no longer interested in me, they told ME to call toyota HQ and see if they could help.. I am 66 and disabled.. still using smartphone for GPS.. for a $30,000 car, this is totally unacceptable......"

Ronald M., AL (2018 Toyota Camry SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Because this whole entune system is new, I have not been able to fully use it. My issue with the navigation system just appeared. I am seeking an answer on my own and plan to go to the dealer if I can't."

Anonymous, DE (2018 Toyota Camry XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Still not working properly. Set up system correctly, and each time we have used it (5) 10 to 15 minutes into the drive the map screen disappears. Since we're driving the car we rely on WAZE for GPS information. Car is NOT equipped to handle CAR PLAY, a VERY disappointing feature of this Toyota!"

Gary S., FL (2018 Toyota Camry XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"entune ,uses scout navigation.Very poor uses data from your phone. whole set up is useless phoned Toyota many times ,has trouble with iPhone 7. I noticed 2019 toyota camrys are gettine Apple I Play, to late for me.Icant understand why Toyota used this crappy Entune system. Very disappointed that they can't have in car gps without data ,as I bought XLE version."

Anonymous, NY (2018 Toyota Camry XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The navigation system is hard to use and the dealer does not know how to fix it or how to use it. The dealer said Toyota is going with an outside vendor next year, but are not going to fix 2018 models."

"tHEY CHANGED THE eNTUNE sYSTEM AND IT'S AVAILABILITY. WE HAD AN XSE 6CYKINDER WITH THE BUILT IN GPS, WE GOT THE 4 CYLINDER XLE AND THE SYSTEM REQUIRES YOU TO CONNECT WITH THE BLUETOOTH, THEN WITH THE ENTUNE, AND THEN WITH THE SCOUT GPS LINK ON YOUR PHONE, EXACTLY IN THAT ORDER WHILE THROWING ALL SORTS OF DIFFERENT WIFI & BLUETOOTH ALTERNATIVES AT YOU THAT HAVE LITTLE OR NOTHING TO DO WITH CONNECTING. IF YOU TRY TO RECEIVE A CALL IT DISCONNECTS THE GPS WHILE YOU ARE DRIVING TO PUT THE PHONE CALL MENU UP, IF YOU GET A CALL WHILE LOOKING FOR AN EXIT # ON THE HWY YOU'RE SCREWED AT 70MPH. IT'S AWFUL, A REAL CON JOB. WE WERE TOLD IT WAS THE SAME, THEN WE WERE TOLD IT WASN'T AVAILABLE ON ANY MODEL EXCEPT ONE (AFTER BUYING AND TRYING AND SAYING WHAT THE ... IS GOING ON HERE??? THE FRONT AND BACK SEATS ARE HARD AS ROCKS, AND THIS IS THE TOURING CAR, NOT THE SPORTS CAR WHICH HAD BETTER SEATS. AFTER 1-2 HOURS WE ARE IN PAIN. MY WIFE SAID NO CAR TRIPS UNTIL WE GET A NEW CAR IN 2021, IT WON'T BE ONE OF THESE. THE ENGINE PROBLEM SI THAT IT'S NOT TURBO. IT IS SUBSTANTIALLY LARGER THAN THE PREVIOUS 4 CYLINDER BUT HAS NO GUTS. IT MAKES FAKE VROOM NOISES AND IS SOOO SLOW IT'S SCARY GETTING ON THE HWY WHEN BUSY. A TERRIBLE DISAPPOINTMENT. TOYOTA COULD CARE LESS."

Don W., NJ (2018 Toyota Camry XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The Scout GPS -Entune 3.0 audio with Connected Navigation and app suite system is non-functional with many problems. The map system is poor and does not show street names in any detail. It has given incorrect directions. The system has shown there is a communication error and it will not load. It continually tells me that I have to update the system in the car. I have updated it three times with no improvement. Connecting my iPhone to the car system to have a map is frustrating. I would NEVER buy the Camry again. The salesman told us this system was great and after 2 frustrating weeks I went back and asked if I could exchange and upgrade our car to the V6 to have an embedded map. I would have to pay an additional $10,000 because our 2 week old vehicle had lost value since it is now considered a used car. I was a very frustrated consumer. I uninstalled the Entune suite because it never worked and wrote a letter to Toyota Motor Sales in Plano TX describing the problems with no response from them.I now use google or Waze map on my phone in a cup holder. Purchasing a $35,000 car without an embedded map is one of the worst purchases I have ever made. In December 2017 there were over 126 complaints about this inept navigation system. It was only after we purchased the car that I had access to the owners webpage. I wish I could have known this information before and I would not have purchased the Camry. My 2011 Nisan Altima has an imbedded map in the navigation system and it is excellent."

Anonymous, TN (2018 Toyota Camry XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"It’s slow, non responsive on occasion, keyboard small and slow to react to touch. Navigation requires a cellphone to be connected. Needs to be replaced with Apple Car Play or a simple Garmin."

Anonymous, KS (2018 Toyota Camry XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"It loses connection with my phone even though my phone is connected with a line. My new phone is connected via Bluetooth, but entune refuses to recognize this and wants me to connect via Bluetooth. But since it is already, I can't connect. I use my old, reliable Garmin instead."

Maria M., FL (2018 Toyota Camry LE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"the navigation system/info is the worst, it never maintains app information, esp the GPS and the Iheart and, NPR, never remembers your login credentials. "If I had physically connected my phone to the car's electric system, it's possible that the GPS would have functioned much better. Because I relied on the bluetooth the GPS was slow to respond the one time I used it. I switched to WAZE and discovered that the car's Entune system would not let me use WAZE so I uninstalled the Entire navigation app. For this reason I will never lease or buy another Toyota vehicle. I leased to discover how the safety features worked and learned that my next car selection will be based on their infomainment/navigation system."

"Dealer spent 2.5 unplanned hours trying to get my iPhone SE to accept voice-to-text messages which are a legal requirement in my state. "The Scout navigation system is a piece of junk. The dealer has tried to get it working several times - no luck. It is paired to your cell phone so when you shift from one tower to another the scout navigation system drops off. It is virtually useless. That is the reason I would not buy this car again."

"I have been on the phone several time about the Entune App and the updates and the dealer has no idea why it want update and Customer Service only tell you to try downloading again and again only to get the same results, I really don,t know who decided that removing CD's and installing a usb port was the best way for you to be entertained, it the best way to frustrate older driver that are not tech savvy. Transition within the info system from USB, Bluetooth, and app should be seamless and really don't want to go to my computer to update on a flash drive and then take it to the car to get the correct update for my car"

"The Entire system is totally worthless. Software updates have not fixed any of the problems as the system is poorly designed and Toyota has not seen fit to improve it in any meaningful way. The problems this system has created are sufficient for me not to recommend this car. If I could return it, I would."

Steering wheel controls

"The controls on the steering wheel are not at all intuitive. I have repeatedly tried to use the poorly written manuals to figure them out. Very poorly thought out controls."

Michael E., FL (2018 Toyota Camry LE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Sometimes the LDA works and sometimes it doesn't. I know it doesn't work below 34 mph, but that's not the problem. In between times I haven't tried to change any settings. It does work most of the time. I had tested it by going over the center line to see if it's working. Sometimes yes and sometimes no."

C M., KY (2018 Toyota Camry LE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Voice control commands

"It flat out does not work, it cannot understand clearly articulated commands, it is terrible on the phone system and is basically unusable. I have never had a worse set of electronics, my previous Kia Optima makes this cars voice system look like a retarded, brain dead exercise in futility. It takes DIAL NUMBER and tries to navigate to a dissimilar sounding location. It refuses to let you dial manually when driving, but lets you scroll through history to see if you can get to a number that way which is far more dangerous. It's memory is so limited that a lot of numbers I need don't even load -and Toyota were so cheap that they don't even let you change the sd card to fix that major defect. I find myself yelling and cursing at the damn system. Even worse, there is a terrible echo on the callers side of any conversation so that the call is almost impossible to them because of feedback and echo from inside the car. The dealer can't do a thing to fix it and apparently Toyota KNOWS ABOUT THE DEFECT AND BASICALLY DOES NOT CARE. I spent $5,000 extra on every electronic package because that is so important to me and I GOT SCREWED!!! If you need phone, if you are in sales, NEVER, EVER BUY THIS LEMON!!"

Paul F., CA (2018 Toyota Camry XLE 3.5-L V6)

Wind noise

"The car drives with extreme wind noise, I took it back to the dealership 4 times before they fixed the driver's side window from rattling. The window would rattle when I let it down 2 to 3 inches and drive over 35 mph. They never did fix the wind noise which is annoying, I hate driving this car. The told me this is how the car was built and other Camrys display the same amount of wind noise. It's the worst that I've ever experienced. For a 2018 I expect better. My first Toyota, my first Camry and last."

Exhaust

Muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, leaks.

What Owners Say

Other/unsure

"Discussed in previous question. Curb warnings not dependable; bumpers damaged."

J T., CT (2018 Toyota Camry XSE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"This system will activate if the vehicle is driven while using both feet (left foot braking). If that method is used for creeping forward in heavy traffic, acceleration will be interrupted for several seconds; left turns being particularly precarious. Obviously, driver behavior can be modified to comport with the new operating system, but this probably should be a red box large print caution in the 150 page guide to the 700 page owner's manual. I continue striving to correct my own driving habits to comply with the car's computer imposed restriction."

David W., PA (2018 Toyota Camry XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"System operates to extreme in highway traffic. Vehicle spacing is appropriate for safety, but will brake if another vehicle enters the space and accelerate hard to regain designated speed when the space reopens. The range of acceleration and deceleration resulted in highway mileage about 5 mph lower than I achieved without cruise control. I don't use the adaptive function at all."

David W., PA (2018 Toyota Camry XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"All I get is the ding ding....no brake no matter where. Pedestrian warning does not exist says dealer service Manager? I secure cruise ctl. And lane changes because I Find that I am over the line before any sound or steering Change happens. Dealer says no adjustment available."

Michael M., OR (2018 Toyota Camry SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"This only happens when in cruise control.....The car gives too much space from a car in front and other cars fill in causing me to slow more. If the car in front stops rapidly like to avoid a dog and I am in cruise and my car stops with full brake catching the Car behind me by surprise."

Michael M., OR (2018 Toyota Camry SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

J T., CT (2018 Toyota Camry XSE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"If the road curves and the car in the next lane is slow then my car will slow. The controls for cruise control are not intuitive. I got bifocal sunglasses to read the screens. After nearly a year I still have trouble operating cruise control. I have turned off almost all of the so-called safety features because I find the beeps and pings distracting. Instead of keeping my eyes and ears on the road, I am focusing on the screens. I am a competent driver but this car sometimes makes me feel like an idiot. With my other older cars I could manage the radio and the AC by feel. Now I must look at a screen and click thru to other screens. I basically need to pull off the road to make adjustments. I really think touch screens in cars should be outlawed."

Transmission Minor

Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.

What Owners Say

Rough shifting

"Transmission does not downshift properly sometimes, especially when coming to a complete stop. When starting from a dead stop transmission will sometimes slam into gear causing vehicle to jump forward. Basically transmission shifts erratic or rough from a dead stop or at slower speeds. Waiting to see if a new electronic program will correct this problem."

Ronald C., NB (2018 Toyota Camry LE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The car shifts roughly especially in cold weather. when you put it in reverse, you get a loud clunk and quick jerk. Downshifting is irregular. Upshifting is a problem at low speeds. Frankly, it feels like it was designed by someone who didn't know what they were doing. I have owned many Camry's, and this model is not nearly as smooth as they usually are."

Rich L., NC (2018 Toyota Camry LE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Shifting difficulties at lower speeds. Transmission often slow to downshift and at times does so abruptly. Transmission seems not to know what gear it is supposed to be in and I believe at times is stuck between gears deciding which gear to be in."

Richard C., NC (2018 Toyota Camry SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"this is a known problem with the camry for that year; it hesitates at start of acceleration"

Tom N., FL (2018 Toyota Camry XLE 3.5-L V6)

"The new 8 speed transmission is not ready for prime time. Upshifts and downshifts can be very abrupt. The transmission is often searching for the gear. When downshifting, if you step on the gas too quickly to gain speed again, the car becomes a safety hazard because of the hesitation and then shooting forward. Software updates have improved this only slightly. Toyota does not really seem to care."

Richard L., FL (2018 Toyota Camry LE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"From a stop, if you press hard on the accelerator, the car hesitates before getting into gear."

Anonymous, NJ (2018 Toyota Camry XSE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Slipping transmission

"Apparently the new cars of any model now have a feature where the engine shuts itself off when you stop at a stop light or stop sign. You can override this by pushing the ECO button or stepping on the gas. When we first got the 2018 car, my husband was sure there was something wrong with the transmission and took it back to the dealer twice. Finally, the dealer told him, You're just not used to the new generation of cars. Also, the electronics on the dashboard are unnecessarily complicated. I think dealers should offer classes to purchasers of new cars because they are so different from the cars of the past."

Several rounds of unsuccessful dealer repairs. Calls to Toyota corporate. "it was not the paint the letter y cames off the back of the car"

Kathryn C., AZ (2018 Toyota Camry XLE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"I paid $400 extra for my choice of paint color. At less than 8000 miles the paint was peeling off in large chunks near the front surfaces next to the grill. Dealer sent it to a local body shop and it was fixed but not to factory standards, or what factory standards should be."
