The Highlander was the first car-based, mid-sized SUV in its price range. The refined and effortless powertrain is combined with a supple ride and easy access. These serve to enhance the spacious, quiet, and comfortable interior to make Highlander a pleasant vehicle for everyday driving. Emergency handling could be more capable, but it's secure enough overall. In sum, the Highlander is a very good choice.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

"All-wheel Drive is GREAT in Minnesota"

Anonymous, MN (2001 Toyota Highlander)

"V6 way to go. The 4 cylinder turbo engines don't do it. I'm waiting to try the 2019 SUVs all brands so far I don't like any of the 2018 models, but my SUV may give out before I can find one. My SUV had great handling it went when I told it to go and it handled like a dream, in all weather."

Anonymous, VA (2001 Toyota Highlander)

"Great handling and acceleration."

Butch H., VA (2001 Toyota Highlander)

"Stability and reliability. 4000 lbs settles down on the road and rides very well, particularly on the highway. I feel very secure and comfortable in this totally reliable car. That's why I still own it and drive it. I just completed an 1,800 mile vacation in a nearly 18 year old SUV and it performed like a dream, as always."

Alan S., OK (2001 Toyota Highlander)

"just a great comfortable vehicle. Very comfortable ride and also very good traction in the snow."

Anonymous, ME (2001 Toyota Highlander)

"Acceleration is great for a car of this size. It's not fast but has plenty of power for passing. The handling is above average in my opinion for this type of car."

What Owners Say

"Height of car is perfect for older taller people to get in and out."

ELIZABETH B., WA (2001 Toyota Highlander)

Anonymous, ON (2001 Toyota Highlander)

"fits me perfectly."

NANCY W., NC (2001 Toyota Highlander)

"Worst seats in any automobile I have driven. I get pain in my back and legs after just 10 minutes in these seats. There are web site discussing the poor seating in Toyota products but they don't fix it. This is my wife's car and she doesn't seem to mind it because she just uses it for short runs around town. If we go for a long drive or a trip we don't take our Toyota. It is too uncomfortable."

JEROME S., GA (2001 Toyota Highlander)

"Very comfortable car to ride in and drive. Some road noise, but very well done"

DAVID G., CA (2001 Toyota Highlander)

"Without sun roof, great driver seat headroom!"

Anonymous, CA (2001 Toyota Highlander)

"Our Highlander has developed an occasional clicking noise under the right-center area of the dashboard when the car is first started. The noise usually goes away after several minutes. In researching the noise online, I believe it is caused by the worm gear on the shaft of one of the A/C mixing door servo motors not engaging its drive tabs. Several YouTube videos show how to fix this problem, and I plan to do the repair myself rather than go to our Toyota dealer and likely having to pay hundreds"

WILLARD W., CA (2001 Toyota Highlander)

"Its a 17 yrs old car and the seats are still comfortable. The road noise had gotten a bit louder but is to be expected, considering its age. The ride still smooth and the engine is quiet. I love my highlander for its reliability and its comfort!"

Carmen S., CA (2001 Toyota Highlander)

"very very comfortable seat while driving"

Anonymous, ME (2001 Toyota Highlander)

"The seats and the ride are exceptionally good in this car. The car seals out most of the road noise. The seats are more comfortable than most other cars I have driven."

Anonymous, CA (2001 Toyota Highlander)

"It is a great SUV, right size, right V6 engine, right styling, excellent ride. Able to see all around for safety. Noise level very low. Seats comfortable. I hate all the new cars they are no match for my old one its falling apart and people still comment on how nice a ride it has. V6 is the way to go but they are cutting it out. UGH!"

Anonymous, VA (2001 Toyota Highlander)

"The car has been a joy to own, with a comfortable ride and good seats."

Anonymous, BC (2001 Toyota Highlander)

"The seats are so comfortable. People always comment about the too and comfort."

Susan L., FL (2001 Toyota Highlander)

"Rattle in the dash that I can't pin down."

TIM K., MN (2001 Toyota Highlander)

"Solid feel. Comfortable to drive. Powerful performance."

Anonymous, CA (2001 Toyota Highlander)

"The car is very reliable."

SEMYON G., CA (2001 Toyota Highlander)

"Great motor. This vehicle has been very dependable"

JOEL M., CA (2001 Toyota Highlander)

"We paid $8,500 for the car 5 years ago. Bought it from a friend. We have added about 50,000 miles in that time with very few problems. It is likely still worth about half the purchase price. It may be the most cost effective car I have ever owned"

DAVID G., CA (2001 Toyota Highlander)

"Very dependable!"

BUTCH H., VA (2001 Toyota Highlander)

"dependable Cost of maintainace and repairs are ressonable"

Anonymous, MA (2001 Toyota Highlander)

"Best car I have ever owned. 265000 miles so far. A Wheel bearing making noise at over 250000 miles is the only repair of significance other than externally caused items. EG rocks.."

BRUCE B., CA (2001 Toyota Highlander)

"We use this suv to pull the boat, load building materials for small home renovation project and moving. It is 17 years old with over 200k km given its age and what repairs were needed over the years are wear and tear. Expext it is still good for another 200 k."

Anonymous, ON (2001 Toyota Highlander)

"Still running well 15 years later with 200K miles. I liked it so much that I bought another."

JON V., CA (2001 Toyota Highlander)

"This has been the very best vehicle we have ever purchased. 15 years old, just shy of 200,000 miles on it, only a single problem; the alternator had to be replaced. It has had regular maintenance, and had normal parts replaced due to typical wear and tear (Tires, brakes, struts etc)."

Anonymous, TX (2001 Toyota Highlander)

"I paid a little more to get this car but it was money well spent. This car is basically bulletproof. Other than regular maintenance (and some repairs due to a minor collision) there have been no negative issues. I live in an area that experiences a lot of snow annualy thus the streets are treated with salt. I have had no corrosion! I think this car will continue to be reliable and safe for at least another 5 years."

GARY M., ON (2001 Toyota Highlander)

"never had a problem with it - just maintenance"

NANCY W., NC (2001 Toyota Highlander)

"Great buy. Good on gas and still has a comfortable ride."

Anonymous, DC (2001 Toyota Highlander)

"Very low cost of ownership. Almost no problems ."

F N., GA (2001 Toyota Highlander)

"Fantastic reliability. I JUST NOTICED THE HIGHLANDER IS A 2006! Not 2001. The Tundra is a 2001."

J L., TX (2001 Toyota Highlander)

"Most reliable auto I've ever owned. Value is spot on."

Robert J., CA (2001 Toyota Highlander)

"Although in 2001 the cost of m highlander seemed a bit stiff ($31,000), it has been the best investment regarding vehicles I have owned. I have had no mechanical problem with my car, only maintenance and wear and tear. NO REPAIR expenses. This still my main vehicle and use it daily. Love it has two row seats and lots of storage room; I really don't like the third row feature of the newer models. As I said, it has been my best investment and would do it all over. (Don't like the look of the newer models' grill: too big and no need for it)."

Carmen S., CA (2001 Toyota Highlander)

"The single best car in every category that I have owned in 60 years of owning cars."

Alan S., OK (2001 Toyota Highlander)

"Very dependable!"

Butch H., VA (2001 Toyota Highlander)

"What can you say about a car that never breaks? That’s this Highlander."

Anonymous, BC (2001 Toyota Highlander)

"I purchased the vehicle new and it has met all of my needs in cargo space, reasonable gas mileage and low maintenance expenses for the mileage ."

Anonymous, FL (2001 Toyota Highlander)

"Sixteen years later it is still running beautifully and is reliable and comfortable."

Anonymous, CO (2001 Toyota Highlander)

"has never needed repairs except occasional oil changes and front end work - i.e., new tires and alignment, other new parts in front"

Anonymous, NC (2001 Toyota Highlander)

"The Toyota Highlander has been the most reliable automobile I have ever own. It has not had a single maintenance item other than normal wear and tear items like tires and brakes."

Jerome S., GA (2001 Toyota Highlander)

"Long lasting reliable vehicle with reasonable maintenance costs."

Gerald S., IL (2001 Toyota Highlander)

"Good performer, very reliable and still looks brand new."

What Owners Say

"Love this model Highlander's size and comfort. Considering a new Highlander, but don't want a bigger, 7 passenger, vehicle. Wish they still made this size Highlander."
