The well-rounded Toyota Highlander has always been one of our top-rated SUVs. For the 2004 model year, the Highlander received a larger V6 engine and a small third-row seat capable of accommodating two children in a pinch. This Highlander was quicker, returned better fuel economy and handled more securely than the version we tested in 2001. The ride is very comfortable and the quiet interior has impressive fit and finish.

What Owners Say

"Great handling on curves. Stable platform."

Anonymous, AZ (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"I love the power and reliability of this solid workhorse. Although it lacks all of the new crash avoidance devices, I always feel safe in it."

Bonnie B., RI (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"It accelerates quickly and smoothly when it is necessary to merge into traffic."

Anonymous, VA (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"Accelerates quickly, very responsive."

Gerald H., PA (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"The performance -- acceleration, braking and handling -- of the Highlander are very good for a relatively large car. It is nimble and responsive, and the car meets all expectations for a utilitarian family vehicle. Road noise is somewhat higher than desired, but overall, the car is very comfortable."

Thomas T., NC (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"Drives very well for 14 year old. No problems with the all wheel drive or power.. A little loss on power but for it's age i would say it is still good."

Stewart S., NC (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"Accerates very well since it is a 6 cylinder car. Visibility is good. Takes bumps and uneven pavement well. Good in the snow although I don’t take it out anymore as there is no need."

G K., NY (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"The V6 has the power I need to safely drive on the road."

Anonymous, WI (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"My fault. I purchased it with the "Towing Package" without understanding all that that involves. Has a pickup type transmission and gear ratio that makes shifting clunky. It also has a low geared rear end, making for 15 mpg around town and only up to 18 mpg on the freeway. Other than that, it is a great vehicle. Comfortable and and very reliable. Transmission shifting in town drives me crazy."

Anonymous, CA (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"With the V6 engine, I can climb hills and pass other vehicles easily."

Roger W., AZ (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"V6 engine is a must have. Do not get the weak 4 cyl"

Anonymous, NJ (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"Amazing acceleration. This car provides consistent and dependable handling and acceleration. I couldn't ask for a better vehicle."

Anonymous, AZ (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"good feel"

Jeanne M., MA (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"Acceleration is more than adequate with handling designed more for comfort over aggressive driving"

Wally V., CA (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"Easy handling and stable. Acceleration is satisfactory except with AC on and full load of luggage."

Ronald H., VA (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"Decent gas mileage and great power. At 170000 miles I would still trust it to go any distance"

Don H., MT (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"Easy handling in and out of the traffic especially on the highways."

Anonymous, OH (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"Surprising what this 4 by 4 can do for acceleration and handeling. Almost sports car quality. There's always a confidence inspiring feeelnto this vehicle, even in hard turns there seems to be little body roll that feels like control is lost. This SUV is 14 years old and drives like the day I bought it."

Anonymous, MI (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"It has good acceleration at highway speeds and is quite responsive and predictable."

Anonymous, NY (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"That handles well for the most part a little stiff around curves but still is relatively tight for a car that almost hit 300,000 miles on it"

Anonymous, VA (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"The shifting is very rough under hard acceleration."

Anonymous, MI (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"It accelerates quickly and avoids any obstacles I come across. Since it sits high I can go over bumps and uneven pavement easily."

G K., NY (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"2004 Toyota not very good in snow even after trying various tires."

Anonymous, KS (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"viewsits up high"

DAVID J., IL (2004 Toyota Highlander)

Anonymous, GA (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"We pull a small camper trailer with it, and it does fine."

T H., OR (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"Positive: Overall quality of the Highlander, from the ride, gas mileage, and comfort. Neither my wife nor I have any negatives to report on the vehicle. We couldn't be happier with it, especially the quality after more than 145,000 miles."

SHANGREG P., OR (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"Excellent acceleration and maintains cruise speed average hills with no downshift. Steering is tight and responsive"

JAMES L., GA (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"great engine. car is very quiet and rides nicely"

Anonymous, HI (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"For a SUV it really accelerates. Braking is excellent"

RICKY M., MI (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"acceleration is not smooth"

Anonymous, NJ (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"Acceleration is more than adequate for most driving. More power is always better for safety when needed, but for normal driving that need is rare. (passing a truck up a steep hill with the air running). Steering lacks feel, and the car does not track straight as well as other cars I've driven. (new tires and alignment made little difference) But, a bump up in air pressure in the tires makes handling good enough to be almost fun."

EDWIN S., PA (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"Answered in previous category."

ROBERT F., VA (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"Acceleration and handling (on Michelin tires) is very good. I recently drove a 2016 Camry, and my Highlander compares well, even better in some ways. The 4-speed automatic transmission in the Highlander downshifts faster than the 6-speed in the Camry."

L H., CA (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"Ride is rough, seat does not allow for comfortable adjustments, acceleration needs a lot to be desired BUT vehicle is absolutely RELIABLE."

Allen B., CT (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"Smooth shifting!"

Anonymous, OH (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"V6 is fast and fuel efficient. Brakes are excellent and car is agile. Front wheel drive is best!! Car is a dog with all wheel drive versipns"

Anonymous, NJ (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"Acceleration and handling are still excellent."

Gerald H., PA (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"good, reliable powertrain"

Anonymous, NC (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"The car still drives well after all of the years."

Anonymous, VA (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"Steering is highly agile and responsive but the ride is a bit hard. The acceleration is quick however the dive by wire function can add hesitation in acceleration response."

Anonymous, VA (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"Poor Cornering"

Anonymous, NV (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"good acceleration and handling"

Jean H., FL (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"Still handles and drives great. Feels like new"

K D., NJ (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"Accelerates quickly and maintains cruise control speed very well. Downshifts on hills with at most a 1 mph loss in speed. Very responsive in turns and no pull left or right. Maintains straight ahead over rough road surfaces with little or no steering adjustment."

James L., GA (2004 Toyota Highlander)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"Driving is easy, relaxing. Vehicle has enough power for normal driving, but is way under-powered for any kind of aggressive driving. Seats are simple but comfortable. Over 14 years of service only front passenger seat has visible fabric wear. Noise is quite noticeable, it requires to raise audio volume when going to highway. Due to age dashboard parts and interior plastic make some noise."

Anonymous, IL (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"It's easy for me to get in and out of the car. Easy to drive with comfortable seats."

Anonymous, OH (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"Quiet and stable ride with comfortable seating."

Anonymous, NJ (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"noisier than I would like..."

Annelies M., GA (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"After 14 years of ownership the seat clad in leather have held up and the cushioning has reamined very good."

Stewart S., NC (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"The seats are leather, it is relatively quiet, and since it is a heavier auto, a good ride."

Anonymous, WI (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"Very comfortable for vehicles in this class. Over 130,000 miles and still quiet and comfortable"

Anonymous, NC (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"Climate control began to become somewhat erratic. Changing temperature for either heating or cooling does not always work. Research shows that there's a problem with a ribbon cable behind the plate on which the heat/cool controls are mounted. I have not attempted to fix this"

GREGORY A., NY (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"The climate control system works at random. I cannot accurately select the amount of heat or cool since the position of the selector dial keeps changing. Also at times it makes a loud clicking sound which I stop sometime by playing with the selector knob and sometimes I can't."

Anonymous, TX (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"air conditioner meets specs but now that I live in California as of two years ago, I consider it under powered and does not cool to my satisfaction."

Anonymous, CA (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"The seats are horrible. Long distance is impossible."

THOMAS B., PA (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"Seats, noise, and ride are fine. LCD display for temperature control and fan speed fades completely out (is unreadable) when outside temperature and temperature in cabin is high."

Anonymous, VA (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"Low road noise and solid comfortable ride. Seats are OK for primary driver (woman), but a little short and head clearance tight for a tall driver. Climate control is almost constantly on during hot weather with load/high flow fan noise"

JAMES L., GA (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"The vehicle is very comfortable for an SUV, with a better ride than other brands I have experienced"

JOEL T., WI (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"Last summer, the climate control stopped working. I could not get the heater to work right. Then I got the heater almost all the time. Couldn't get it to go off unless I turned on the a/c. Then that gave me trouble. The local dealer, Whittier Toyota, wanted $1100 for it. Just to buy a new one from the dealer was $850. (That means $250 for less than 1 hour of labor) A new one on ebay was $550. I found someone to repair it on ebay. They charged $42 to repair plus shipping one way. My son a"

BILL B., IN (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"Highway noise is very noticeable"

TED B., CA (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"The car is 12 years old. It has been AMAZINGLY reliable. It has always been a joy to drive. Even at its advanced age, the car has no squeaks or rattles. Rides beautifully. Engine has 228,000 miles on it and still does not burn oil and no telltale leaks on the driveway. Only one issue of note: temperature adjustment control works intermittently."

Barry S., BC (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"extremely comfortable vehicle, well made and excellent interior appearance"

Jean H., FL (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"Our Toyota is now 13 years old and has taken us on four return trips to the tip of the Baja Peninsula in Mexico. It has NEVER caused us any grief. It still looks like new, but feels a touch more up in years than it was before. It is by far and away the best car that we have ever had for the money."

Anonymous, BC (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"The Highlander is a very comfortable car to drive and also excellent leg room in the rear seat. We have the 3rd row seating which of course is very small and used very seldom. The tire noise is very bad however, have to turn the radio very loud to overcome the road/tire noise. The seat warmers are great even though I didn't think I would use them."

Anonymous, MD (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"Most comfortable seats of any car owned. Great comfort on long road trips but wonderful width and leg room. Only complaint is road noise."

Anonymous, OH (2004 Toyota Highlander)

Anonymous, AL (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"This SUV is smallish when compared to other behemoths on the road in the US...but not like the earlier Rav4s or CRVs at the time. It was mid-sized, and we feel that it's held up fantastically over the years. The 3rd-row seat that folds flush to the floor is great when we need to haul little ones; otherwise it's away for groceries, storage and dog hauling. The ride is comfy and floaty for passengers; it's not jarring as the suspension isn't stiff (not a sport ute by any stretch.) The leather se..."

Henry L., OR (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"This has been a great car. It has needed very few repairs and has been incredibly reliable. The mileage has been acceptable for a car of that age. Putting all of that together, it has been inexpensive to run, while giving great performance. That is the definition of value."

The vehicle goes through snow and inclement weather with a confident, sure footed stance. It has gone throu a foot of snow for miles with no problem. In the summer the traction is beyond discreption. Very little problems have occurred, by far one of the best Toyotas or SUVs I've purchased."

Don H., MT (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"Over 130,000 miles and still running great - says it all."

Anonymous, NC (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"This is a refined, very reliable car that has provided safe and efficient operation for fourteen years without a single major issue. There have been small issues, such as the instrument-panel heater control rheostat, that haven't worked properly, but otherwise the car has been exemplary. Toyota quality is evident in every aspect of this vehicle, and the "value-per-dollar" has been as good as (or better than) any car we have owned through the years."

Thomas T., NC (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"14 years old with no major problems!"

Anonymous, SC (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"It is a roomy vehicle with a third seat that allows us to drive grandchildren. It also has the power to pull small utility trailers and small boats. Thus we are able to get along with one vehicle rather than needing a large van and a small truck. This provides us better fuel mileage than either of the other two that I mentioned."

"bought used. paid somewhat of a premium based on Toyota reputation. But, the car has been mostly reliable and served us well. Expect at least 3 more years, maybe more if it continues to be reliable."

EDWIN S., PA (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"the car is a steady performer -its configuration allows for a multitude of packing scenarios - including carrying a canoe on top - gas mileage is reasonable for an '04 model. I am a utilitarian -this car fit me to a T. However, the front passenger seat belt will not retract on its own and must be unconnected and repositioned because it occasionally seizes up."

"Bough used for $10,000 seven years ago, have been offered $6500 recently. GREAT VALUE."

DANA I., CT (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"A truck like SUV with incredible reliability. Loves to tow & can handle 3500 pounds Inexpensive to operate but no longer cheap to replace. Good Canadian winter truck-like SUV. Ralph L., OH (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"It is too bad Toyota forgot how well they made this model. It is exceptional in room for hauling items, visibility, driving position and overall comfort. My only complaint and this includes my 2014 RAV$ is that the instrument panel does not light up when you start the engine. If it is an overcast day you need to turn on the headlights so you can read any of the engine gauges."

At 144k miles, it should easily last to 200-250k without breaking a sweat. You can't say the same for other cars of this vintage or from other manufacturers, in my opinion. Styling

How it looks inside and out

What Owners Say

"Styling still is good after 12 years"

SCOTT B., SC (2004 Toyota Highlander)

"Our 2004 Highlander exterior and interior in our estimation looks a lot better than the new ones with their stupid extended tail lights and dumb interior color combinations. I complained to Toyota about these items."
