"Toyota's Hybrid system is outstanding in that the regenerative braking both recharges the battery and at the same time saves wear on the disc brakes. I have replaced the disc brake pads once at 110,000 miles. The gas mileage has been very good considering the weight and size of the vehicle. Under some conditions (flat terrain) I have achieved as high as 32MPG. Another plus is its handling in snow. The computer system senses slippage in the front wheels and will activate the rear electric drive so the vehicle becomes all-wheel-drive. The Highlander has had only one major repair, more preventive; replace the timing belt at 100,000 miles. I have followed manufacturer's routine maintenance instructions throughout the life of the vehicle. I can say that this is the best vehicle I've ever owned."

When I got the car and turned the odometer to actual mileage, it was much higher and the car should have been sold to me as a "demonstrator" or "program" at a lower price. "I use the 2008 Highlander for moderate off road driving (very rough unpaved Colorado mountain roads). The front bumper is high and angled up somewhat, which helps to keep from hitting rocks. The latest model Highlanders, which I have test driven, have such a low bumper that I would not dare drive one on my usual mountain drives. The bumper on the latest models is low enough to hit some curbs just parking in town."
