The Toyota Highlander scores high for its refinement, quiet interior, ride comfort, power, fuel economy, and flexible and roomy second-row seat. It's one of our top-scoring three-row SUVs, but it is not without its drawbacks. The third-row seat is tight. And while the handling is secure, it's not very agile.

"It doesn't handle well"

"Decent acceleration for such a large SUV."

Everett I., CA (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"Tends to float somewhat (loose steering) on the highway)"

Anonymous, CA (2008 Toyota Highlander)

Joe H., AZ (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"Excellent acceleration. 6 cylinder has a lot of pickup. Rides like a Camry, very smooth and responsive."

Steven W., IL (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"The acceleration is great. Once in a while the traction slips a little but it's acceptable. You don't forget you are driving a large passenger vehicle but as long as you don't get stupid about it and expect it to handle like a sports car, it does just fine."

Allan F., TX (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"The car handles well enough, but I would like more steering feel. I'm not a fan of the electric steering."

Kurt S., OH (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"The car has superb accelation from a standing-still position and plenty of reserve for passing at highway speeds. Handling is assured at all speeds, even when breaking hard."

"This is a truck-like vehicle in a lot of ways but comfortable. It won't give you a great driving experience, but it moves comfortably and acceleration is good."

William S., FL (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"my only concern is that I find the steering feedback is a little light for my preference. I personally like to feel some resistance in the steering and I find that I constantly have to pay attention when driving to avoid wandering. There is nothing wrong with the vehicle; it's just my perception based on 60 years of driving other vehicles."

John J., ON (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"Acceleration & handling is very impressive."

Mark E., OH (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"acceleration good for a big suv"

"The car handles quite well in traffic with good acceleration and is very smooth and quite on the open road."

Anonymous, FL (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"V6/tranny not as smooth shifting as I would expect. Doesn't seem to have much get up and go unless you really push it and then passing gear harshly kicks in. Also doesn't seem to downshift correctly when decelerating."

MICHAEL W., AL (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"Great long distance ride-very good for touring"

Anonymous, IL (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"Although I love the other features of the SUV, it's not a very quick car and doesn't have much zip."

"It handling ok. But acceleration sometimes are slow."

JOHN J., ON (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"Acceleration is good. The steering and handling is good, but not as good as an Audi or Mercedes."

Anonymous, NJ (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"Excellent no problem even at 110,000 miles!"

RUDY C., NC (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"The transmission seems a little sloppy with a minor delay in engaging."

LYLE F., ON (2008 Toyota Highlander)

Anonymous, FL (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"Handles well and smoothly. Feels safe to drive."

Ernest H., CA (2008 Toyota Highlander)

Christopher B., TN (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"The Highlander has plenty of get up and go when you need it with the six cylinder. The handling always feel secure. Four wheel drive works very well in the snow."

Steven E., CA (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"Great acceleration-excellent in the snow"

James S., PA (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"Even as a vehicle my family has owned for 11 years, the engine just keeps going. Acceleration from the V6 is still stout and handling for a mid-large SUV is impressive. A lot of confidence with this vehicle in tough northern winters. Turning radius isn't great but not unexpected."

Anonymous, MI (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"The vehicle handles well in dry weather or in a snowstorm, I haven’t had any issues. The traction and the handling during rain or snow has been great."

Anonymous, VA (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"Toyota's Hybrid system is outstanding in that the regenerative braking both recharges the battery and at the same time saves wear on the disc brakes. I have replaced the disc brake pads once at 110,000 miles. The gas mileage has been very good considering the weight and size of the vehicle. Under some conditions (flat terrain) I have achieved as high as 32MPG. Another plus is its handling in snow. The computer system senses slippage in the front wheels and will activate the rear electric drive so the vehicle becomes all-wheel-drive. The Highlander has had only one major repair, more preventive; replace the timing belt at 100,000 miles. I have followed manufacturer's routine maintenance instructions throughout the life of the vehicle. I can say that this is the best vehicle I've ever owned."

Myron B., PA (2008 Toyota Highlander)

DANIEL D., SC (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"Disappointed that passenger front seat has only 4-way power. For a vehicle that cost $44,000 it should have 8-way or more such as available on the comparable Lexus vehicle RX-350. There is a whining noise at speeds over 70 mph that increases in volume the faster the Highlander is driven. Toyota service personnel (both at the dealer and at an independent Toyota service shop) were not able to find the cause of problem. This noise has not led to any problem that required repairing/replacing any"

The ride is appropriate to the vehicle. Less wind noise would be desired. I suspect it would be even worse if the roof rack cross bars were installed. (they aren't because the design does not provide for easy install/removal by the owner!)"

"With the fold down third row seat I could either fit extended family or a load of kids into the car. When folded, it offers plenty of cargo space. The back bench seat fits tall adults as comfortably as those in the front. Even though it's a large car, it drives like a smaller car and handles pretty well. We use it for all of our long distance travel because of its comfort and space."

Anonymous, WA (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"I was disappointed in the mileage and that the vehicle didn't come with an automatic sun/highbeam rear view mirror. I had to pay extra for this."

Robert B., NY (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"It's a great family car, we take this car for family trips, has plenty of power and great acceleration, we own the car for 9 yrs about 100k miles, only major work done was to change water pump at 84k miles. Great value and relyability, I would buy this car again."

Vazgen T., CA (2008 Toyota Highlander)

Jim S., AL (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"A good solid vehicle, lots of power, great HVAC, a pleasure to drive."

Anonymous, IA (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"Owned the car for 9 years now. I appreciate the fact that I have only had one repair (for the water pump), outside of the normal brake repairs needed on any car. I found this incredible, compared to the cars I owned previously."

Pierre G., ON (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"Love it, holds it value, great car"

Anonymous, TX (2008 Toyota Highlander)

Anonymous, NJ (2008 Toyota Highlander)

J L., CT (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"Reliability"

Anonymous, MN (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"This vehicle now has almost 200,000 miles, and it has only ever had once serious issue (a recent exhaust leak). Otherwise, it has only ever needed replacement of wear parts."

Anonymous, MA (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"I paid a new car price believing the odometer was showing a typical low mileage. However, the dealer had the odometer turned to "trip" which showed the low mileage. When I got the car and turned the odometer to actual mileage, it was much higher and the car should have been sold to me as a "demonstrator" or "program" at a lower price. Neither the dealer nor Toyota would hear of providing me with a "real" new car or make a price adjustment."

CHARLES P., LA (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"Now at 190000 miles. Relatively few problems. Has been a great car for hauling people and moving large objects."

NEIL W., IL (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"Do to the fact that many roads are dark, I had to add fog lights for extra seeing. The ride is sometimes bumpy. Although this is a Suv, it sometimes accelerate like a truck."

Anonymous, NY (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"We got the basic model so in that respect and its overall utility, therein lies the value. The low gas mileage does cut into that value"

Anonymous, CA (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"I think Toyota vehicles command a high price for used vehicles because of their reputation for long-term reliability. I was glad to pay a bit more because I expected that, and I have not been disappointed."

LARRY L., NY (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"I should have gone with the upgrade to climate control package"

NEIL Q., CO (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"Excellent vehicle for features, comfort, and reliability."

Anonymous, IL (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"I have had NO breakdowns or high repair bills. I have 138000 miles and still have 35% of brake pads left! This truly has been a maintenance free vehicle."

JAMES R., GA (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"Excellent buy"

RUBEN Z., TX (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"Had problem with hose on transmission ."

MICHEL R., ON (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"This Highlander has been the highest cost to own vehicle I have ever owned. We use to rely on your recommendations for everything but no more. We own and enjoy a 1988 Suzuki Samurai and your company ruined the US market for Suzuki. This is another reason we don't subscribe anymore."

KEVIN C., AZ (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"One of the best cars that I have owned-superb handling and comfort"

James S., PA (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"Unbelievable mileage per gallon and durability over the LONG RUN"

Anonymous, CA (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"Still looks great and runs great!"

Charles B., NJ (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"This car has been an excellent purchase. The only services the car has required are recalls, routine items (e.g. oil, air filters, tire rotations/balance/alignments), brake pads (once), and tires (once). The only area where value is not great is that the wheels on the sport line are an odd size, so there are only a few tire options. Those options are expensive."

Anonymous, TX (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"I think that the inside is done cheaply compared to the price paid but I am especially annoyed that there is no had grip on the inside by the front passenger door to hold onto when getting into the car--it is overhead and does not help one bit"

Anonymous, WY (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"Price was veery reasonable because due to lack of repairs"

Carl Z., WI (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"Very durable and a comfortable ride and handles well"

Anonymous, CA (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"good price with good performance without much maintenance cost."

Anonymous, FL (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"Gas mileage is not good considering claimed performance."

Ernest H., CA (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"The highlander has been great. Never anything more than basic tune-ups and we just replaced the timing belt and water pump because of the mileage and no other issues were found. Only slight issue has been the wear on the tires is more than non-hybrid because of the added weight of the batteries."

Anonymous, AB (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"The dealer was easy to deal with."

Anonymous, OR (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"I felt and still feel that the original price for the car was high given the gas mileage and equipment that came with it."

"Excellent quality and performance."

Anonymous, TX (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"After over 170,000 miles it runs flawlessly. Yes we've had to fix a few things but it all came after 100,000 miles. Great ride and plenty of room."

"I think this car is the greatest! It is the second most valuable car I've owned with the exception of my 1961 VW Beetle"

Walter B., UT (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"NO mechanical problems ever! I have owned this car for 10 years today and am completely satisfied with its reliability."

James R., GA (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"It has been a good, reliable, and economical vehicle."

Phillip R., IN (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"Th 2008 Highland has held it's value and the appearance is still "modern". I plan to keep it another 10 years if the annual repair costs remain less than the monthly cost of a new SUV."

Anonymous, OH (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"This car has lasted for 10 years and 100k+ miles with only one major issue (that occurred under warranty). The car has held up very well overall and I intend to own it for several more years."

Anonymous, VA (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"Very dependable, except when the oil cooler line burst 4/13/18 and caused a massive oil leak. I pulled over immediately and was able to save the engine."

Steven E., CA (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"Great value, no plans on replacing it, had since new. Would drive the four corners of the US tomorrow in it."

Gary P., NJ (2008 Toyota Highlander)

Anonymous, CA (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"This car has been constant problems. From audio system to wheel bearings the problems never cease. This was most true in the first few years I owned it."

Richard B., NC (2008 Toyota Highlander)

Styling

How it looks inside and out

What Owners Say

"This body style was Toyota s new larger Highlander and I love it! I enormously dislike the "bug-like" styling toyotas have taken. Bulges and swoops and aggressive air scoops just look out of place. Their 4Runner is too large, too aggressive and too much for everyday use."

JAMES R., GA (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"The 2008 Highlander is one of the ugliest SUV's on the road. Only bought it for its utility and had to sacrifice styling."

TERRY M., VA (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"They have made the newer Highlanders into a minion with a third seat. We much preferred the smaller older cars."

Anonymous, WY (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"The styling is pleasing to the eye."

CAROLYN G., NY (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"my only negative is that the rear window cannot be cleaned properly because of the overhanging roof. When traveling and washing the windows while refueling, it is impossible to reach the top 3-5" of the rear window with the normal service station equipment."

Anonymous, ND (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"I don't like the monochromatic color scheme."

Anonymous, OR (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"Like the styling on the exterior."

THOMAS A., VA (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"Loved the overall look if the exterior. Too bad they changed the hood design."

MARK C., WA (2008 Toyota Highlander)

"I use the 2008 Highlander for moderate off road driving (very rough unpaved Colorado mountain roads). The front bumper is high and angled up somewhat, which helps to keep from hitting rocks. The latest model Highlanders, which I have test driven, have such a low bumper that I would not dare drive one on my usual mountain drives. The bumper on the latest models is low enough to hit some curbs just parking in town."
