The Toyota Highlander scores high for its refinement, quiet interior, ride comfort, power, fuel economy, and flexible and roomy second-row seat. It's one of our top-scoring three-row SUVs, but it is not without its drawbacks. The third-row seat is tight. And while the handling is secure, it's not very agile.

What Owners Say

"With many Toyotas I've driven, including the 2012 Highlander, a 2012 Camry, and a 2010 Avalon, the front tires tend to spin in wet conditions if you are pulling out into traffic --- even if you are not pulling out very fast. Our new 2017 Rav-4 does not do this, so they may have fixed the problem."

Kay A., SC (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"The Highlander is the BEST!!! Very comfortable. Have driven cross country several times in total comfort. Gas mileage could be better but for a vehicle this big it isn't too bad. I will replace this car with the same when the time comes!"

Anonymous, VA (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"First, the all wheel drive is terrific in the snow, wet roads and wet GRAVEL roads. At highway speeds the ride is smooth and assured. Braking is smooth, straight and extremely reliable and predictable. Acceleration is smooth and there always feels like there is power to spare."

William C., IL (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"The Highlander has a sedan-like drive, but feels like a large SUV on tight turns. Acceleration is good, but sometimes it won't downshift the way I want it to when flooring it on the on-ramp to merge into traffic."

Anonymous, FL (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"It has great acceleration and handles very well We even had the opportunity to use it in snow and the all wheel drive worked great."

Leon K., AL (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"The highlander is amazing for how well it handles in snow or slippery driving conditions. With snow tires, this car will go anywhere and it stays on the road despite many challenges. I even took it to a winter driving course, where I had to learn to disable as much of the automatic stability controls as it would allow. Even then, the professional drivers were calling it “the tank.‿ this means that I never spun out, I never hit a cone and never even got to where I was worried about losing control of my car. In regular driving conditions, with all features active, I have been amazed by how this car will pull its self out of what could become a skid and how much I am able to retain control of my vehicle."

"When accelerating quickly, the vehicle pulls to one side. This occurs on a regular basis"

Anonymous, MD (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"I drive in "snow" mode all the time because the acceleration pedal is way too sensitive otherwise. The car can't track straight in highway without constant adjustments. There's a noticeable deadzone in the middle of the steering which makes highway driving tiring. In my old 95 corolla and in my current prius if i hold the steering wheel it drives straight. But not this highlander. I've had it aligned multiple times over it's life. It came from the factory acting this way."

Anonymous, VA (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"Car is a pleasure to drive - quiet and smooth. Has lots of power. However, very disappointed in the extremely small display screen for back-up camera. Most other brands of the same year had much larger screens."

DON K., AL (2012 Toyota Highlander)

THOMAS C., MN (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"Push the pedal and the AWD moves. Torrential downpours daily now. nice enough exhaust note; not an Infiniti exhaust note, but good. new Cooper tires aid in ride comfort."

JESSE B., AL (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"After having driven GM products my whole life the Toyota brakes are vastly superior. Our mileage is not as good as our old Bonneville (poor brakes and poor reliability) but for a higher profile vehicle the mileage exceeds the government numbers."

JAMES L., TX (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"could do better on gas milage in local driving"

Anonymous, NM (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"It's smooth handling and a great family hauler. Works well on road trips, however, handling at limits is not as good as a minivan due to increased ride-height/center of gravity. DIsappointed with only 18,000 mile life from original tires, but Goodyear TrileTred gives this SUV a smooth ride."

JIMMIE D., IL (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"Excellent acceleration by V6 and good handling but numb steering"

ARLAN T., MI (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"Very little "driver feedback" from steering. Seems "dead" for lack of a better descriptor. Acceleration is somewhat sluggish, and while expected for such a heavy vehicle, is still somewhat disappointing."

Anonymous, TN (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"Steering is overly sensitive. Difficult to maintain land direction on interstate. Acceleration is phenomenal, but when joined with oversteering issue, can potentially cause loss of control. Happened all too often."

Anonymous, AL (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"Adequate performance and haandling for an SUV - however,it is front wheel drive and I should have gotten AWD or FWD. My fault for not searching to find one and paying more. AWD/FWD is necessary in any snow/ice condition which we have occasionally."

FREDERICK B., VA (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"Not 100% satisfied with the steering which is a bit ambiguous (which is the term you used in your original review of the vehicle). Steering in the Subaru we own is much more positive and noticeable when we switch vehicles."

What Owners Say

"Quiet and comfortable on long trips"

Brad W., WI (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"I am short, so the seat is far forward. There is no driver right side armrest. I would also like a front passenger grab bar on the far right dash instead of over the door."

Betsy M., SD (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"I use it for everyday commuting and errands, ferrying four grandchildren, carpooling for prison ministry, and Ubering. Very satisfied with the comfort for all those purposes. Often have Uber customers rave about the comfort of my car compared to many other Ubers."

Errol C., MS (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"The Limited edition of Highlander, our second one, is pure comfort. The front seats are extremely comfortable, overstuffed chair degree. The back seat is likewise comfortable (except for the middle seat if used). Even if the front seats are in the furthest back position, the back seats have an abundance of room, and have their own adjustment. The vehicle is quiet, smooth riding and has amenities that rival more expensive sedans."

Anonymous, AL (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"Our Highlander Limited is quite comfortable for all day driving. On the highway I've driven out a whole tank gas without stopping because the seats are so comfortable. The noise level inside is low and the ride is quite nice. When we replace this Highlander, it will be with another. It has the comfort of a Lexus SUV without the price."

David K., IN (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"Power driver's seat allows a lot of flexibility in adjustment."

Anonymous, BC (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"The interior is very spacious, but lots of road noise even with quality tires. A slight wind can rock the body on the chassis. Standing water on the highway causes the vehicle to pull suddenly."

Anonymous, AL (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"We call it the TARDIS. We got it for long car trips and love it for that. It hugs the road, is happy on washboard dirt country roads, and gets good enough mileage. Because the back seats do not fold to a truly flat plane, it is not good to sleep in. Poop. I would have liked it to be a lighter exterior color, as it seems other drivers do not always see it. I drive with lights on at all times because of this."

"The 2012 Toyota Highlander is a great road trip vehicle. It rides well, even when pulling a folding camping trailer. It gets good road mileage. It has super comfortable seating. It is quiet."

R T., TX (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"Excellent ride after 7 years still going strong. Don't think twice about taking long trips with two young men in the back seat. Plenty of room for them after 7 years of growing. Seats still look new."

Charles G., NJ (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"It is very difficult to get a quiet ride. This vehicle wears tires, despite repeated attempts at alignment and then the tires become very noisy. This is irritating and frustrating. The seats are soft and cushy but I don’t feel that my neck is supported well and my head goes back too far to the headrest. I can’t sleep as easily in the seats of this vehicle as I do in the seats of the Tundra."

Donna M., CA (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"I love Toyota and Lexus vehicles for their quality, but I have a bad back and their seats are appalling. Unless they improve on their seats, this will be my last Toyota/Lexus"

"It is a VERY comfortable vehicle that you can spend nine hours driving on a trip."

James T., VA (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"I feel there is too much road noise for this vehicle."

"smooth quiet ride, great visibility and easy to use"

Anonymous, MA (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"Noise depends on the tires on car"

Carson S., KY (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"Road noise intrudes into the cabin so that radio has to be tuned louder than I'd like. Seats are quite comfortable; really like the adjustments for driver seat. Despise the second row seat. It is NOT a bench seat, which makes it usable for only 2 passengers, not 3 across. I do like the fact that the 2nd row seats can be adjusted forward and backward, though. 3rd row seat seems unnecessary and virtually useless for all but the tiniest individuals -- access is difficult and seating is cramped; virtually no trunk room with 3rd seat up."

Anonymous, CA (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"Very comfortable - drives like a car, not a truck."

Anonymous, FL (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"The trailer hitch is a good accessory but for the price I paid there was no navigation or bluetooth accessories and it is difficult for my husband to get his leg up over the lip due to back issues so its not the most comfortable for him."

TROY E., MD (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"Great vehicle to travel long distance with comfortable seats and quiet cabin area in concert with outstanding handling characteristics."

GLENN S., KY (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"Was disappointed this year did not have climate control. Previous Highlander (2010) did. Same model."

SHERRI E., WV (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"It is not as quiet as my last Highlander 2003. Otherwise, I am very satisfied. I bought my 2003 new, it was 10 years old, had 170,000 miles when I had my first repair. My repair was the switch from heat to air conditioning broke."

RITA T., TN (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"It is a very comfortable car, great visibility and individual climate controls"

JAMES T., VA (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"When the second row of seats are folded down, they do not lie flat. This turns the cargo area into a slide so everything I put back there slides toward the back. How ridiculous to design a hauling vehicle this way!!!"

Anonymous, WI (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"The seats are uncomfortable - seat is flat and doesn't have much give"

Anonymous, WA (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"I don't find the seat very comfortable. I also do not like the headrests in the toyota. They push my head forward and down and give me a headache after a while. The climate controls are ok, but my previous brands of vehicles had nicer settings."

Anonymous, SK (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"The heated leather seats are wonderful on cold mornings. The air conditioning is powerful and has a rear passenger control."

BRIAN C., CA (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"The front passenger seat is stiff and uncomfortable on long trips"

MICHAEL P., CA (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"The ride was a little tight for about 20K miles"

J C., WA (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"Wind noise around front side doors at top. Toyota said now at to correct its an issue with highlander. Toyota trying to correct in newer models."

SUSAN T., GA (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"Too much road noise. Not a smooth ride. Reclining seats are uncomfortable when reclined. Carpet is cheap and difficult to clean. I installed weathertech mats. Good room in 2nd row seats."

Anonymous, AL (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"Good support and comfortable seats. The height offers great view of the road."

RUSSELL T., MA (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"I use it for long distance driving trips often. The seats are comfortable to drive for long periods of time (10-15 hours+). The AC allows separate control front and back, and is reasonably powerful. The anti-fog does not work as well as hoped for in cold to very cold weather."

MARY F., WI (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"very comfortable"

Anonymous, OH (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"The door handle position is poorly placed which makes the user contort his/her wrist to access the window controls."

PATRICK F., DE (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"Very good long distance road vehicle. Noise level is better after replacing original tires. Climate control is excellent. Florida is hot and humid."

CHARLES H., FL (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"Tire road noise at medium highway speeds higher than I'd like. This noise may be due to the tire tread design. However, the tire noise it is transmitted into the car cabin."

"Comfortable seating ride and low noise"

MIKE H., IL (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"I have a bad back and the passenger seat doesn't hae lumbar uspportk, like the drivers seat. If I ride a long distance i am uncomfortable, so I often take an aleve before we start out on a trip"

Anonymous, CO (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"Bouncy ride; stiff shocks; quick steering. Back seats comfortable for passengers."

Anonymous, CA (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"Would like an arm rest that comes forward another 6 inches. The back up camera screen is too small. The newer models have a larger screen."

Anonymous, IN (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"The design of the controls is very poor. You cannot see the controls behind the steering wheel. The seats that I rate only fair and my wife had an allergic reaction to the seats."

JAMES L., TX (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"The vehicle is somewhat loud on the highway--it is difficult to hear the 2nd row passengers or the radio. The 'recirc' button is too far from the driver. The radio display is difficult to read (small letters in dot matrix) and it is very limited on the length of characters it reads. It cuts off song titles or groups and there is no way to scroll to see the truncated portion."

RICHARD N., OR (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"it is to noisy on the road ,I wish I had noticed it before we bought, otherwise,it rides nice & we get good milage for a big car"

Anonymous, WA (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"Nice ride reasonabe mpg."

JOHN M., AZ (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"seats too hard and dome shaped so uncomfortable even with the leather trim. worst nav system ever made. hard to use and actually took me 2 hours out of way on long trip. definitely not worth any money. a $70 garmin is vastly better. way overpriced. base model, no gps and cloth seats has got to be better and cheaper..."

KENNETH L., CT (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"Power seat for the front passenger would be more satisfying than a manual seat. Third row seat is not spacious enough for adults and if the third row seats are occupied then there would only be enough space for at least two full size luggage and nothing else. A good feature are the power lift gate and bluetooth."

Anonymous, NY (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"It is a very comfortable ride. Smooth and quiet. The driver's window quit working and we had to have it fixed - a bolt came loose inside the door. The window molding around the driver window came loose and had to be replaced. The outside molding on top of passenger side was defective and dislodged from vehicle permanently."

Anonymous, WI (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"The seats are very comfortable as well as they can be easily adjusted. They are heated for the winter."

M A., IN (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"We use this vehicle for trips and it is very comfortable."

ALVAN H., FL (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"Road noise is louder than expected"

COLLEEN M., NC (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"Apparently fine leather seats and comfort from these seats means a lot to me. The seats on our 2002 Cherokee are as fine today, 14 yrs later, as they were the day of purchase. EVERY carmaker should use the same high quality leather that I have in this car. Beautiful thick high quality leather that feels brand new. Seriously..."

We got an excellent trade in price too. Bought it within 30 minutes! And have loved it! Would never go back to a sedan...."

Styling

How it looks inside and out

What Owners Say

"The Highlander is a very pretty vehicle. Looks stylish, inside and outside"

Anonymous, IN (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"It was fully loaded.... the trim package is wood grained and beautiful. Excellent sound system. Heated leather seats (it didn't have the cooled seats which I may have preferred, but can live without. ) Beautiful burgundy color... It is truly a classy looking vehicle!"

SHARON K., KS (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"nice looking car"

JOHN M., AZ (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"color fit and trim and interior comfort"

Anonymous, NY (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"Very good looking lines on the outside. Very appealing interior though I find the driver's seat comfort and positioning in relation to the steering wheel and distance to floor pedals. I have long legs and I can't extend the steering wheel out far enough for my arms to rest comfortably on the arm rest without having to move the seat more forward than I would like for leg comfort."

ROBERT S., OH (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"The chrome-painted plastic trim on the exterior is full of brownish spots which neither we nor the body shop can remove. We are not willing to pay for new trim which will likely have the same problem."

BARBARA L., CO (2012 Toyota Highlander)

"Love the streamlined style. I had a 2004 Highlander and it was boxy. I love the newer look. Although the larger size makes it harder to fit into the garage. The pearl white color is beautiful."
