The Toyota Highlander scores high for its refinement, quiet interior, ride comfort, power, fuel economy, and flexible and roomy second-row seat. It's one of our top-scoring three-row SUVs, but it is not without its drawbacks. The third-row seat is tight. And while the handling is secure, it's not very agile.

What Owners Say

"handles very well in our MN winters. My wife is the primary driver and I feel very comfortable with her in this vehicle. She enjoys the comfortable ride and sound system."

CRAIG D., MN (2013 Toyota Highlander)

"Fuel economy"

JESUS P., PR (2013 Toyota Highlander)

"It is bigger then I thought it was. So parking is a little more challenging then I expected. But u can carry at least 7 people or u can easily drop the seats and fill the car up to haul things. It has a lot of storage space when the 3rd row seats are down which comes in handy"

Anonymous, NM (2013 Toyota Highlander)

"The car luches when stepping on the gas after a stop. Acceleration is jerky. Handling around corners is a little squirrely compared to my old Honda Pilot."

JULIE M., CA (2013 Toyota Highlander)

"Does not accelerate as well as I expected."

WILLIAM B., CA (2013 Toyota Highlander)

"Nice power from the V-6, but it comes on pretty abruptly. Certainly not like an old 2003 Lexus ES300 that I still drive (with 187K miles on the clock). Handling is a big wierd from time to time, but can be adjusted to. The Female Command Post at home at first disliked out $40K+ purchase, but now I think she has adapted to it. We pay you $705 a month to own this vehicle and for the most part it has been good. Bruce"

LYNDA M., TX (2013 Toyota Highlander)

"Great handling and acceleration."

WILLIAM O., NC (2013 Toyota Highlander)

"Occasionally, from a start or very slow speed, the engine "stalls". Have to pump a couple of times to get accelerator to respond. Have asked service dept to check out, and they said "we can't get it to do it". I asked them to keep the car and drive it for several days to experience it, but they wouldn't."

Anonymous, WA (2013 Toyota Highlander)

"I drive from Georgia to Oregon - the car is great for that. I don't drive it around town (too large and bulky). The car handles very well on the roads and I particularly like the ability to take on small, rural, underdeveloped roads"

Anonymous, NE (2013 Toyota Highlander)

"Although tis car is smaller than the van, it handles as if it were the larger of the two. And for the cargo space, a van would have been a better value."

Anonymous, CA (2013 Toyota Highlander)

"Vehicle wants to slightly drift at highway speeds"

Anonymous, MD (2013 Toyota Highlander)

"No problem with acceleration & handling, like it."

Anonymous, AB (2013 Toyota Highlander)

"Very comfortable and roomy. Acceleration is responsive and braking is very good. It seems to decelerate as it coasts, which is a plus if it actually does. Doesn't seem to lean much on turns or curves."

Anonymous, OH (2013 Toyota Highlander)

"I was amazed last winter how well this SUV drives in deep snow with "Snow Mode" engaged."

MALCOLM H., VA (2013 Toyota Highlander)

Anonymous, IL (2013 Toyota Highlander)

"you feel secure and confident the vehicle will get you to your destination safely, particularly in the winter"

Anonymous, QC (2013 Toyota Highlander)

"The driving and road handling are wonderful. This is a big reason why we bought this car."

TERENCE T., WA (2013 Toyota Highlander)

"Seems soft, like I'm separated from the steering, The brake pedal sinks like a master cylinder is failing. Toyota said its just the way they work."

LARRY C., KS (2013 Toyota Highlander)

"Good: smooth on the road, handling, room, gas mileage, solid feel on road. Bad: blind spot at left outside mirror."

LARRY B., VA (2013 Toyota Highlander)

"It drives like a tank. There is no nimbleness and pulling into a parking place, takes way too much room."

VICKI M., VA (2013 Toyota Highlander)

"Feels very much like driving a comfortable sedan, feels safe and accelaration is great. Also seating higher up makes it a very good vacation traveling vehicle."

GARY H., MN (2013 Toyota Highlander)

"Drives jerky when towing trailer"

Anonymous, NY (2013 Toyota Highlander)

George M., PA (2013 Toyota Highlander)

"The cruise control doesn't adapt to even modest inclines very well. It will accelerate up a hill to 3 mph or more faster than the settings when I get to the top. This is in stark contrast to my two fords that handle the hills very well."

Doug J., MN (2013 Toyota Highlander)

"This Toyota Highlander has made four road trips from WI to CA since purchased.. It is a pleasure to drive. We will spend up to 14 hours behind the wheel and get out of the SUV a little stiff and tired but not totally fatigued. The V6 provides excellent acceleration and has decent fuel economy approaching on the interstate highways 24 mpg. The Highlander is a winner in our opinion."

Chris S., CA (2013 Toyota Highlander)

"responsive steering, doesn't under or oversteer. For size of engine, it has adequate acceleration on "on-ramps" to get into traffic."

Anonymous, TX (2013 Toyota Highlander)

What Owners Say

"Seats are not the most comfortable when it comes to riding for a long period of time. No lumbar support"

BEN V., ON (2013 Toyota Highlander)

"Quiet, relaxing ride in comfortable seats. Noise is minimal, and it takes the bumps with ease. Sound system is very good."

"GPS takes you on all the backroads. When the headlights are on, the radio screen is impossible to see. The compass in the mirror does not come with the vehicle. It has to be ordered when you buy the car."

ERIC M., WA (2013 Toyota Highlander)

"Comfortable ride, but headroom isn't very plentiful. Disappointing that voice commands for my smartphone aren't included. There is a rattling noise coming from the center of the dash, near the air vents. Also, 19mpg for mostly highway driving for a 4-cylinder engine is disappointing."

I removed the cowling and screened the hole-problem corrected. I'm surprised Toyota hasn't addressed this. Many complaints on websites about this."

STEPHEN S., PA (2013 Toyota Highlander)

"I "test sat" every car that Consumer Reports recommended. I am extremely satisfied with this car, both as a driver and passenger around town, and on 2 day 1100 + mile trips."

KAREN G., KS (2013 Toyota Highlander)

"The seats are terrible. We do a lot of long distance driving, 700 miles in a day. After 3-4 hours, it is painful to sit in the Highlander seats. We have had to get seat cushions to make comfort acceptable. We had the same problem with a Toyota Camry. On the other hand the seats in a Chevy Suburban were comfortable for an all day trip as are the seats in the Chevy Silverado we now own."

"This is a very good car. We like the ride and room. it is nice to drive."

LARUE D., AZ (2013 Toyota Highlander)

"Climate: When you use the A/C the very next day I get and oder from the air circulation system. Toyota told me that it was a EPA change to the coating on the condenser. The water that is generated from the A/C seems to sit or stays on the coil. Toyota says they are not responsible and won't do anything to correct the problem. My wife will not get in the car if I have had the air on because of the oder."

SHARON R., MO (2013 Toyota Highlander)

"Of the 50K miles on my Highlander, about 20K has been on extended trips. The comfort level of my Highlander is exceptional. I haven't had a single problem with any of the systems and when you arrive at your destination, you arrive feeling at ease, not tense like you normally experience. My mileage is another plus. On an average trip, I'll get between 25 and 27 MPG. My best trip averaged 27.4 MPG. Can't beat that."

"The car is very comfortable especially on short drives. The seats become a bit uncomfortable on long drives (over 3-5 hours). The handling is not as tight as I would prefer. They have improved this greatly on the latest generation of Toyota Highlander (2014+). The 2013 does not inspire confidence when driving at highway speeds. The amount of passenger and cargo room is fantastic, and I like having a little more space in the 2013 generation than in the latest model (2014+)."

"The seats are wide and comfortable. The ride is smooth and there is no noise when riding."

Gilbert C., TX (2013 Toyota Highlander)

"There is lots of headroom. The seats are wider than other vehicles we looked at so they don't force your legs and hips to curl up at the edges of the seat like many other vehicle seats do. That also applies to the seat backs. Many other vehicles have narrower seat backs that force your shoulders to bow inwards but the Highlander seat backs are wider and more comfortable. There is also ample seat room in the 2nd row of seats, even for tall people. This makes it a comfortable ride for long commutes and trips. There is not a lot of outside or road noise in the cabin so you can hear other passengers talk. The overall ride is also very comfortable."

Julie Y., CO (2013 Toyota Highlander)

"Road noise is a minor issue, but I wish it were more quiet. The passenger seat is manual and I wish It was a power seat like the driver’s."

"I feel that the front seats could be more comfortable if they were more contoured. They seem very utilitarian. We especially don't like that there are no seat memory buttons to easily go from one driver position to the next. The rear seats (center row) are VERY comfortable and adjust well for back seats. We particularly like the ability to quickly change from three across to captain's seating and being able to stow the center "seat" in the center console."

"Although it is considered a mid-size SUV it has a huge amount of hauling capacity but still gets 28-29 mpg when we drive. Our daily trips include city, highway, and mountain driving so that is good gas mileage. Our previous smaller mid-size SUV never got over 17 mpg with the same type of daily use. Although it cost more than our previous vehicle, we have a lot better hauling and seating capacity and a lot better gas mileage so it is a good value for what we spent and we love that it's a hybrid so we don't contribute as much pollution driving it."

We are very pleased with the value received from the Toyota compared to the Ford. The Toyota has been very reliable whereas the Ford started to fall apart shortly after the warranty expired"

Stephen M., NJ (2013 Toyota Highlander)

"Dependable SUV, gets good mileage, has a comfortable ride. We have a travel trailer and it has done a good job pulling our RV. There is plenty of storage space in the back and if the middle seats are folded down, it can really carry a lot. We've used the rear seat on occasion to carry an extra 2 passengers; it's not that easy for passengers to get in and out of the rear seats. Good to have it in a pinch, but not that practical."

"I really dislike the 2-toned leather. It makes it look cheap and having the dashboard in black.. it seems all your vehicles have black dashboards, no matter what. Our new 4-runner we wanted it to be all brown leather. When we got it, only the seats were nicely done in the brown color we picked. The doors, dash and all other areas were black."

John F., WY (2013 Toyota Highlander)

"This is great value, reliable, good gas mileage given its size and six cylander engine, which provides smooth power.. It provides good comfort and plenty of space. Seating is very good for five, a little tight for the third seat but works for kids or short trips with adults. Very reliable and a good highway traveler. It is a bit combersome to park in city streets, soft on the corners related to handling. In 85000 miles it has needed nothing beyond the service schedules."
