What Owners Say

"This is the best handling and accelerating SUV I"ve ever owned. When I saw the HP I didn't expect the acceleration I get."

DENNIS H., KY (2016 Toyota Highlander)

"equal to or better to cars costing $10000 more"

Anonymous, NC (2016 Toyota Highlander)

"Gas Mileage not good and seems rough riding at times"

SANDRA H., TX (2016 Toyota Highlander)

"It actually drives well. The problem I have is with the front blind spots. The front window trim combined with the mirrors leaves a huge blind spot for me especially when I make a turn. If I'm on a curve I can't see a car. I also can't see the curb when turning. I'm only 5' and have the seat as high as it will go"

Anonymous, TX (2016 Toyota Highlander)

"Has all of the warning instruments (bline spot, back up camera, etc.) and electronics are wonderful. Very comfortable on long drives.Economical to use."

DARRELL A., SC (2016 Toyota Highlander)

"Everything except navigation is great"

JAMES W., FL (2016 Toyota Highlander)

"I previously owned a Mazda CX9 (7 years). The new Highlander does not handle or brake nearly as well. The brakes on the Toyota are not progressive- stopping very poorly at highway speeds until the pedal is finally pushed very very hard to stop. The car leans a lot in the curves compared to the surefooted feeling of my much older Mazda. Starting pushbutton system is very difficult to use compared to my other cars, My other cars just start and stop when I push the button but the Highlander req"

W B., FL (2016 Toyota Highlander)

"Drives and handles like a luxury car yet it has the beef to tow with ease."

LEE F., PA (2016 Toyota Highlander)

"Handling is a bit quick, but seems good overall. Engine performance is good, certainly adequate for a vehicle of this size."

DAVID M., TN (2016 Toyota Highlander)

"Compared to previous Highlander (2009), it is much quicker, handles really well, and is much quieter"

LARRY H., IL (2016 Toyota Highlander)

"Previous vehicle was an '04 Volvo XC90. The Highlander drives much more like a car (in a good way) are requires little or no re-acclimation between driving the Honda/Accord and the Highlander."

DOUGLASS D., VT (2016 Toyota Highlander)

"For traveling going across country and going on mountain terrain great ride and handling."

"Acceleration seems slow sometimes"

Anonymous, GA (2016 Toyota Highlander)

"I like the way the car handles and the acceleration is great when needing to pass or get on the freeway. It never hesitates. It is a pleasure to drive even after a long trip of 200 or more miles, you are not tired. For a higher profile car, it holds the road good even in curves."

ROBERT G., CA (2016 Toyota Highlander)

"Ride not as smooth as expected, and road noise louder than expected."

DENNIS Z., TX (2016 Toyota Highlander)

"for a 6 cylinder with 271 hp a bit lame especially after previous car (volvo V60 with 4 cylinder twin turbo and 240 hp)"

HERBERT P., CT (2016 Toyota Highlander)

"Very good, like a smaller sportier car"

Anonymous, OR (2016 Toyota Highlander)

"Very good power and handling, especially for this type of vehicle"

GREGORY G., WI (2016 Toyota Highlander)

"Acceleration is just ok. Wish it were a little more powerful."

ANTHONY B., CO (2016 Toyota Highlander)

"Manual shifting is slow and unresponsive."

JOHN W., NJ (2016 Toyota Highlander)

"do not like front wheel drive. windshield washer speeds are inferior to other cars I've owned."

EDWARD W., FL (2016 Toyota Highlander)

"The only problem I've had is the smoothness of the ride reduces the kinesthetic coordination of body with machine so much that suddenly going 90mph is a surprise. Cruise control a necessity."

HOWARD B., NC (2016 Toyota Highlander)

"Best all around driving awd vehicle I have owned."

Anonymous, IL (2016 Toyota Highlander)

"accelerates very well - handles pretty good"

MARK A., AE (2016 Toyota Highlander)

"Love the vehicle. Everything looks good and functions well. Front wheel drive: Making turns while accelerating hard from a stopped position can get hairy. The vehicle lurches compared to rear wheeled drive."

THOMAS B., FL (2016 Toyota Highlander)

"The ride is EXTREMELY smooth. Not only di we think that, but guests riding in our Highlander have also commented on how smooth it is. It is an absolute dream to drive this vehicle - handles responsively, accelerates quickly when needed, stops on a dime, seats are very comfortable, and driver assist controls are intuitive and react well to drivers touch and feel. Smooth ride!"

CHARLES B., NJ (2016 Toyota Highlander)

"Having driven a 4cylinder GMC Terrain for 3.5 years there is no comparison."

"Acceleration is excellent. I haven't had a chance to test its handling but appears to be okay."

KEITH H., MN (2016 Toyota Highlander)

"I have noticed a moderate effect on the vehicle handling in a cross wind situation. I believe it is attributed to the current tires Toyo. I have driven the same type of vehicle with Michelin tires in a similar situation with out the effect. The rest of the handling is very good and responsive."

KEN K., PA (2016 Toyota Highlander)

"The transmission seems to hunt for the correct gear under hard acceleration (on ramp merging). The engine revs high and then the trans. shifts to a higher gear almost immediately."

DONALD J., NY (2016 Toyota Highlander)

"Perfect match of power and acceleration to the size and weight of the vehicle Handles like a bmw"

DALE B., TN (2016 Toyota Highlander)

"The brakes are awful. The pedal feels like a sponge. I am looking into better high performance brake pads. What I have is not acceptable."

Anonymous, NJ (2016 Toyota Highlander)

"We had high expectations with the Highlander and test drive vehicles in the same class. By far the Highlander have the most car like drive of the SUV's and didn't give off that boxy feeling. We decided to go with a 2016 rather then the 2017 because the transmission had upgrade on the 2017 had considerably more gears. We were concerned while pulling a trailer the transmission with more gears would be shifting too much. Not sure if that was a good idea because the 2016 we got shifts like crazy wit..."

Herbert L., IL (2016 Toyota Highlander)

What Owners Say

"Seats and appointments are very comfortable"

GLENN C., ON (2016 Toyota Highlander)

"My previous Highlander I could rest my left elbow on the door arm rest and still hold the steering wheel. the 2016 is a bit wider and I cannot do that any more. If my wife leaves the steering wheel and seat adjusted to her preferences it is very difficult for me to get into the drivers side, particularly getting my legs under the steering wheel column."

"Very quiet and comfortable ride"

GREGORY G., WI (2016 Toyota Highlander)

"Quite enough. Very comfortable Climate control is good but could use different air vent deflectors, something like the new 2016 ford excursion. I think all cars should be knob-driven (old school) because it's less distracting."

"Took it on a trip to visit family (600 miles each way) and was very comfortable. We have taken this trip many times in other vehicles and felt the need to stop more often to "stretch". The second row seat, pushed all the way back, left plenty of room for my 6' son to be comfortable. My complaint about the Highlander is engine noise and vibration upon acceleration. Noise like a sports car when I first accelerate, ride firmer than Buick (feel bumps more - may be because this car is 400# lighter than the Buick), design has seats lower than I like. I bought because of dependability & high scores on your ratings so am satisfied that way - I'm just not pleased overall. Have only owned 1 month."

"Leather interior looks great but seating on long trips not as comfortable as cloth would have been as there is more cushioning with cloth. "The price of a Toyota vehicle is getting very high. I have been a Toyota fan for many years but their prices have climbed to luxury levels."

CHARLES B., TX (2016 Toyota Highlander)

"I would have leased/bought a hybrid Highlander except that the gas savings doesn't warrant the substantial difference in cost."

Anonymous, ID (2016 Toyota Highlander)

"I priced via Consumer Report Pricing. Was somewhat below their fare price. For how this car was equipped I felt the price was good for value was good. However, you always think you could do better."

Anonymous, OH (2016 Toyota Highlander)

"Well equipped for the price I paid. Would have bought a higher level if it wasn't for the included options I didn't want, i.e. sunroof. End of season selection wasn't very good; had to take a color other than what we wanted."

DAVID M., TN (2016 Toyota Highlander)

"It's great : value, comfort, reliability and versetality"

Anonymous, TX (2016 Toyota Highlander)

"The price I paid for the optional floor mat is over price .you can get a better deals somewhere else lot cheaper for the floor mats.."

Anonymous, IL (2016 Toyota Highlander)

"We bought it new trading in a low miles Toyota SUV we didn't like after having it just a few months. A major markup to have leather seats installed to replace fabric in the new Highlander. We also took a beating on the trade-in SUV."

PAUL S., FL (2016 Toyota Highlander)

"A little pricey compared to some of the competition, but Toyota group of vehicles' reliability is worth it."

TIMOTHY R., NL (2016 Toyota Highlander)

"According to all the auto publications, the Highlander is one of the most reliable SUV's available today. The previous generation of this car is still on the road in very large numbers."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Toyota Highlander)

"The suv was over priced and the dealer would not come down. Got a poor tradein as well."

Anonymous, CO (2016 Toyota Highlander)

"got a great price for a very complete car!"

Anonymous, RI (2016 Toyota Highlander)

"My biggest complaint is the OME tire's and brakes as an example need to be replaced much earlier which I believe is a deal theat Toyota and the dealers made to boast up their maintainance coast ( I own both a 2009 same model tire replacement @ 70,000 brakes @ 90,000 2016 best estimate 50,000 tire's and maybe 70,000 brakes)"

Edward K., VA (2016 Toyota Highlander)

"Need to understand your daily mileage needs. If go <31 a day this car is great. Quiet, quick (using electric motors), well built and comfortable."

"Many features and aesthetically pleasing"

Keith M., MO (2016 Toyota Highlander)

"We bought the XLE version based on CR's recommendation. Your review said it had the most value for the money. We are well satisfied with the amenities in the car. Nice things that don't come with the XLE are cooled seats and powered passenger seat. The next version up is the Limited and that was $5,000 more. We didn't feel the need for lane departure, intelligent cruise control, etc. We're still pretty good drivers. The XLE is a fine vehicle. Very solid. Fun to drive."

Richard B., TN (2016 Toyota Highlander)

"they charge too much 41,000 for xle, but I love everything about the vehicle. best vehicle i ever bought ! Very good quality on everything."

John M., WV (2016 Toyota Highlander)

"I believe it is a little pricey for what you recieve"

Vito S., MI (2016 Toyota Highlander)

"For a mid-size SUV, the value is exceptional. Lots of great features and the reliability Toyota is known for."

Debra J., MI (2016 Toyota Highlander)

"Service. After 2+ years, my Highlander has not had any service beyond the scheduled maintenance. AND those services were Free."

James S., MA (2016 Toyota Highlander)

"Why spend more for a name? The Highlander combines quality, comfort, performance, reliability, and style for a winning combination. Using Consumer Reports vehicle info for quality and cost info was very helpful. Add the local dealership services, with a good price using Costco auto buying program facilitated a pleasant buying experience."

Susan S., IL (2016 Toyota Highlander)

"We paid $40k cash for the 2016 Highlander XLE AWD, based on the recommendation from CR. Didn't need the high-end stuff. This is the most solid vehicle we have ever owned (that's coming off of 13-years with an Avalon). Drives great and no issues after two years. Recommended!"

Richard B., TN (2016 Toyota Highlander)

"Good gas milage and 0 issues"

"All automobiles are overpriced. Our current presidential administration is an iconic example of corporate greed. My Highlander should have cost about half what I paid and Toyota of America would still have made a handsome profit."

"Toyota has been slow, including this vehicle, to build in various electronic safety equipment, relative to the competition, without having to buy the highest trim line."

Margene C., TX (2016 Toyota Highlander)

"Compared to the other vehicles we were considering (Buick Enclave, GMC equivalent, Ford Explorer, and Acura suv) the Highlander had the most features for the least price. One feature the others didn't have was a window in the tailgate that opened. This is handy when going on a golf trip. After the luggage is loaded, the last two golf bags can go in through the window without everything else falling out."

George C., MD (2016 Toyota Highlander)

"Vehicle is reliable and good quality, my second I've owned."

Timothy H., TX (2016 Toyota Highlander)

"Need Apple car play"

Vladimir K., AL (2016 Toyota Highlander)

"This is a truly pleasureful SUV. I have the Platinum model with all of the accessories and options. It is a joy on road trips. I will always buy hybrids since the are so reliable and because of the wonderful gas mileage. We own a 2007 Camry Hybrid with over 160,000 miles and it has been faultless. We expect nothing less from the Highlander Hybrid."

"There are many less expensive vehicles that come with more safety features and electronic conveniences. Toyota lags behind the competition in this way. For example: Backup camera doesn't alert you in any way when you're close to hitting something/someone. No front collision warning No seat memory."

"Third row seat belts don't stow well when seat is down. Cargo mat rolls up from where seat belts anchor. I cut a slit in the cargo mat (drivers side) to allow the mat to lay flat."

RICHARD H., PA (2016 Toyota Highlander)

"Really ugly back half. Huge bulgei on rear light covers. Silly overhang over the rear window makes it hard to wash."

RANDALL K., ON (2016 Toyota Highlander)

"Outside is very nice. I Do not like the way the glass hinges at the tip of the rear opening. It collects dust and is hard to clean. Inside has a strange blue trim with the black and grey interior."
