"The new cruise control so much different than the old. Even at the close in setting it slows too soon when you are approaching traffic from behind like cruising on the interstates. Have noticed a couple times on my recent 2000 mile trip that it can falsely sense traffic in the next lane and slow down for trucks going around some corners for example. I do like how it automatically slows when traffic slows & adjust as traffic speed changes. However I do not like the harsh acceleration if you pull out into the left land at say 8 MPH under cruise setting the car down shift & accelerates hard to get back up to speed."

"Not really handling but more of a parking brake issue. When the vehicle is parked at a forward downhill angle and the parking brake is used the vehicle will still lurch forward a bit. When the parking brake is release, there is a loud clunk sound from underneath the vehicle. I took the Highlander in at 700 miles for this issue and was told that it will go away in time since it was still new. After researching on the internet, I have discovered other instances of this issue not only with the Highlander but other Toyota vehicles. Not a big issue but hopefully not a bigger issue later."

"The engine provides good acceleration. Reasonable gas mileage. I have no issues with the engine. One of the reasons I purchased a Highlander instead of a Pilot is the Pilot's 9 speed transmission. I was in the market for the upper trim level. It tended to hunt for gears at low speed. I don't sense that in the Highlander. I'm still getting used to a transmission that can shift 8 times, but I don't detect it hunting for gears like the Pilot."

"While parked on a hot day, with the a/c on, I noticed how hot it was inside the car at face level. I then felt the interior of the car where the sunroof is, and it was 120 degrees. On my old Acura MDX, the interior roof of the car was solid. On this Toyota, it's just a piece of heavy cloth, which has no insulating properties, so it gets very hot with the sun beating down on GLASS sunroofs. Very cheap. Uncomfortable. Disappointing that a good car has this cheap, ineffective design error."

"Comfortable seating all around, I'm a taller person and usually passenger and rear seats headroom is to small (hit my head on roof). Highlander has enough headroom that this doesn't happen. Road house is kept to a minimum and sound system seems to have noise cancelling. Everything is within easy reach when driving so you don't have to take your eyes off the road when driving. I indicated in the questions that I don't call when driving but if one of my kids call i do answer and having the controls on the steering wheel is the only reason I do so (again don't have to take eyes off road or concentration). Vehicle has plenty of room for passengers and luggage, I had the roof installed so I can also put a storage device up there if required which is nice. Love the heated and cooling front seats, very nice to have on those days when you hit the extremes. Plenty of plug-ins for people to charge their electronic devices. For a family SUV off has towing capability (my use for this is bike rack in the back) very convenient."

"I am finding a number of smaller factors that for me add-up to a vehicle below my expectations. The sound system quality is poor, especially with regard to bass response and adjustments. I find operator controls not as well placed and identified (or as intuitive) as in other vehicles I have owned. Interior lighting isn't as good as I've seen in other vehicles I've owned. Materials used in the vehicle seem to be a bit below par (for example some of the leather fabric on the seats has torn after just four months, which Toyota won't stand behind by the way). The auto headlight system doesn't always work when it should, so I keep it turned off. Lane keeping works okay most of the time but is easily confused when road markings aren't in good shape or weather conditions aren't good. The vehicle's glass lets in a LOT of heat on sunny days, making comfortable temperature settings sometimes hard to find. One of the major reasons I bought the vehicle however was for the hybrid system, which overall does seem to work well. City gas mileage runs generally as advertised. Highway mileage is extremely sensitive to speed and wind/weather conditions. The vehicle will not reach advertised mileage at many of today's increased highway speed limits. I find some of the controls for the hybrid system to be difficult to use and understand. I do find the vehicle ride to be comfortable and it handles well."

"I traded in my 2016 Volvo XC-90 for the Highlander. The Highlander has many of the same features that the Volvo had, the quality of the interior materials is not as luxurious as the Volvo but the Highlander is smoother, quieter. It gets much better gas mileage and on regular fuel. I love the back window that flips up without having to open the hatch. I also like the microphone that you can turn on so that the rear passengers can hear the front seat passengers through the car speakers. My only complaint is I recently travelled to Canada which uses the Metric system and I could not see how fast I was going because the metric speed numbers are very small and dark blue. There is a setting to change the odometer to metric not to make the numbers on the speedometer brighter to see, I even stopped at a Toyota dealership while there and they said there is no way to make it easier to see. The Highlander is an excellent road trip car, very smooth, roomy, comfortable, quiet, and great gas mileage. It also has a great reliability history and resale value."
