2005 Toyota Prius Reliability - Consumer Reports
A lot of the Prius's appeal is its 44-mpg overall fuel economy and ultraclean emissions. But it also provides a roomy interior, hatchback versatility and admirable road manners. Although relatively small on the outside, the long wheelbase and efficient space utilization give it interior room comparable to that of a midsized car.

Cruise control

"While driving the Prius all the warning light came on and this was after have had the car in for it regular check up, which was great. We were told that it was because of the gas cap. The did not think it was the Hybrid battery as that had been check"

Anonymous, CA (2005 Toyota Prius None 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Right brake light went out. One LED out caused all LEDs to fail. Not possible to replace. The whole light assembly had to be replaced @ $225. (It is a sealed unit. What happened to 60 cent bulbs and do it yourself!"

Herbert F., SC (2005 Toyota Prius None 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Again, ten year old car + heavy driving mostly in urban areas I think that this record of reliability to be acceptable"

Philip Y., TX (2005 Toyota Prius None 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Had to replace the rear light assembly in total when some of the lights went out as it is one unit. Seemed absurd to have to pay $280 to fix an out light"

Anonymous, WI (2005 Toyota Prius None 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"One of the tail lights stopped working and the entire assembly has to be replaced, not just a bulb. Cost several hundred dollars. Toyota said this was common problem as the car gets older"

"brake light not working"

Anonymous, CA (2005 Toyota Prius None 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

Fred M., AZ (2005 Toyota Prius None 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Light for license plate sometimes do not light up until I tap on it then it will go on."

"The rear passenger side LED brake lights stopped working and I had to replace the entire tail light unit."

Peter R., MA (2005 Toyota Prius None 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Tail lights often dim on one side or both and appear to be only partially working. Mechanics say the entire module must be replaced and not just bulbs. Cost has been a factor in not replacing them yet."

Anonymous, CA (2005 Toyota Prius None 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
Gauges

"Gas gauge and mileage are incorrect. Fix at dealership with tank bladder didn't work. Suspect electronics. Will schedule again with dealer."

Anonymous, NJ (2005 Toyota Prius None 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"The gauge display intermittently does not light up. This apparently is a common problem. No gauges, no speedometer, no fuel indicator. Driving blind. Then it works fine again. Frustrating. Expensive to replace the whole dash display module, so we (and many other people) live with it."

Anonymous, FL (2005 Toyota Prius None 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Not being a car expert, I'm not sure if I'm using the correct words for the technology which failed. The entire front panel needed to be replaced. That controlled the speedometer, the climate system, other parts of the from control system. They did not pay to replace these parts"

"Right front headlight went out. We had to have it replaced"

Anonymous, FL (2005 Toyota Prius None 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"It is unacceptable for such expensive headlights to cause "cataracts" as a result of the gases used. The insides of the plastic/glass become so pink it is dangerous to drive even with the brights on. It is quite possible that this is not unique to the Toyota Prius. But my expectations of Toyota or greater than those of lesser quality brand cars"

Anonymous, NY (2005 Toyota Prius None 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Toyota Prius 2005 came with two possible headlight systems. Mine came with the more expensive. Replacing the headlights was very expensive both labor and parts. After some agonizing, I replaced both headlights rather than incur the labor when or if the second one failed. Internet research told me that they tended to fail after 10/12 years. Still overall the best car of any kind I have ever owned"

Louis Q., WA (2005 Toyota Prius None 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"The right headlight finally gave out and we had both replaces after consultation with the dealer"

James G., GA (2005 Toyota Prius None 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Headlight changed to pink, then blue hue. Finally, it stopped working. Toyota offered no financial help on this safety issue, so I paid around $500 to replace a headlight. I think this is a bad design, and Toyota should have covered the costs"

Anonymous, NY (2005 Toyota Prius None 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Headlights are unacceptably difficult, and expensive to replace. It took me hours to replace and I ended up using duct-tape. I ended up finding them on Amazon at a very inexpensive price, but if you buy them from Toyota, they are over $100 each. I just told my wife that the next time I look at buying a new car, I will buy the one with easiest headlights to replace. A manufacturer that makes headlights as difficult to replace as they are in that Prius obviously has no concern how much they piss of their customers."

Keyless entry

"My keyfon stopped working, even with new batteries, and since my spare (unbeknownst to me) was also broken, I could not reprogram my keyfob for less than $500 according to the dealer. So I have opted to use my key to enter and lock my car. It is like being n the 1950s but I can do it. My only worry is that I don't have an alarm button anymore."

Anonymous, MD (2005 Toyota Prius None 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Keyless remote stopped working; battery change no help. Dealership found $400 part needed replacing before problem could be fully dianosed. Delays in obtaining part, plus need to shelter back home 300 miles from dealership made us give up on the whole idea. We use the physical key to unlock the car now."

Anonymous, CA (2005 Toyota Prius None 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Key fob batteries died, Dealer replaced both of the batteries for free!"

Jim G., OH (2005 Toyota Prius None 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"This was the third time we've had to get new fobs from the dealership. One of both of our fobs would quit working correctly so we'd have to remove the key from the fob, open the door -- which triggers the car alarm -- and then turn off the alarm. Key fob would then have to be inserted into the slot to start the car. (When working correctly the fob could be on our person and car would still start. Aggravating issue and keys are much too expensive to replace."

What Owners Say

Alignment

"Can't seem to keep the wheels aligned for more than 2 months at a time. I have garage check the alignment every time I take in for an oil change and if it hasn't drifted out of parameters, it's too close. "Blower intermittently goes out. When the repair man looked at it, he said the fan was fine. But, perhaps the connection was faulty and needed a full replacement. Too expensive. Also, we get a frequent "clicking sound" when we run the air conditioner. I understand that this is a faulty reading by the computers. The only way to make it stop is to turn on both the front and back defrosters for a short period of time. Amazingly, that actually works and solves the problem for days or weeks. Read about the solution on a Prius chatroom discussion. Apparently, this is wide-spread."

Display screen goes blank

"Combination Meter Display/Multi-Function Display will periodically go blank. When this happens the LED speedometer and gauges won't light, and the car can only be turned off using a special shutdown sequence, as start/stop button relies on the electronic speedometer to tell the car that it is stopped before you can turn it off, as pressing the power button shifts car into park. There was a recall for this condition, but mine failed after the year/mileage limit, so I will need to pay $800 to fix this condition."

Since problem was with a solid-state device whose operation was not dependent on my input (I was not in any way in control of the system -- it reported on the function of the car) I think that Toyota should be the party paying for the repair. "Several months ago the navigation system display/controls stopped working consistently. The display sometimes flashes on and off. The radio sometimes works, sometimes not, sometimes cuts off while it's on, sometimes it sputters. Control over the heat/AC is reduced to the steering wheel controls. So with this on top of the hybrid battery pack needing replacement, there are multiple considerations of the cost to keep it!"

When I replaced the console, the music system (cassette player, cd player) could not be resuscitated but at least the radio works now. The climate control system came back with the new console.
