A lot of the Prius's appeal is its 44-mpg overall fuel economy and ultraclean emissions. But it also provides a roomy interior, hatchback versatility and admirable road manners. Although relatively small on the outside, the long wheelbase and efficient space utilization give it interior room comparable to that of a midsized car.

Clock

"While adjusting the time for return to EST, the clock pushed back, well into the dash. I can't find a way to pull it forward and when the dealership tried, they only succeeded in changing the time. Now it is over 30 minutes fast. Dealer said there is no way to retrieve it but removing the entire dashboard, at hundreds of dollars for labor alone. I don't think so!"

Jim K., NY (2007 Toyota Prius Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
Cruise control

"I changed the small starter battery myself and now the cruise control no longer works"

Bryan W., NH (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

Anonymous, CA (2007 Toyota Prius Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Headlight would go out intermittently on drivers side, was found at the dealership to be a wiring issue, was fixed and no problems for approximately 1 year. Same headlight had flickering issue and went out (permanently) was burned out. Replaced entire module at a high price, bulb itself was not able to be changed. This resolved the issue."

William S., NM (2007 Toyota Prius Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Instrument panel failed with back-up camera, idiot lights, and car wouldn't shut off."

Anonymous, CA (2007 Toyota Prius 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Gas gauge does not accurately reflect how much gas is in the tank. Correctly tells you gas can is full, but then says it is empty with 1/2 or more tank of gas still in place"

Cem S., DE (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Twice in the past few months the instrument panel is dark when the car is turned on. No display at all. Error intermittent. Might be related to specific cold/wet conditions"

Anonymous, WA (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"The whole dash board with all lights went out"

Patricia R., TX (2007 Toyota Prius Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

Karen O., CA (2007 Toyota Prius 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Dashboard would go black while driving- no speedometer, odometer, fuel gauge or warning lights. Had to have "cluster replaced, very costly and time consuming. Also had to replace both the hybrid battery and the small battery in rear"

Anonymous, FL (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"defective combination meter since the car was purchased in 2015. toyota wouldn't fix it as a recall defect so had to pay to replace it."

Anonymous, NY (2007 Toyota Prius Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Entire panel went blank. It's starting to flicker again, so probably not an isolated incident."

Anonymous, WA (2007 Toyota Prius Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Car would start up without main gauge cluster coming on. It seems to be associated with very cold weather or weak 12V battery; changing the 12V battery made it happen less and there is a workaround. Apparently there is a problem with a capacitor in the circuit board for the gauge cluster."

Anonymous, MD (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Electronic dashboard display failed and would not display. This is a known issue with this car and was previously repaired under warranty. This time I repaired it myself."

Anonymous, CA (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
Headlights

"I replace at least 2 headlights every year, and it's a pain because they're not easily accessible. I'm getting much better at it, though."

Tim N., WA (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Headlights go off randomly. They will generally restart if the car is turned off then turned back on. Had a history of the dash lights randomly turning off in the past but that stopped. Dealer service is totally unable to provide any repair options - always say we have to see it when it is acting up but it won't do it on demand when at the service center - it is random."

Mike K., FL (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"When a bulb burns out it can take 90 minutes to replace it. Some videos show repair people removing the entire light assembly."

Anonymous, CA (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"had to replace expensive headlights twice since owning"

Anonymous, SC (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Intermittent operation of headlight resulted in $216 to replace the bulb on the headlight. I had tried to replace the bulb myself, but found that I couldn't do it because my hand was too big to fit in the space behind the headlight to unscrew and screw in the bulb. Poor design when replacing a simple bulb costs $216."

Ralph H., MD (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"driver's side headlight went out -cost $200 to replace. A week later the passenger side went out for another $200. This seems excessive for 2 light bulbs."

Margaret C., GA (2007 Toyota Prius Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"HID stopped working"

Anonymous, TN (2007 Toyota Prius Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"The headlights have a higher than normal burnout rate than all the other vehicles I have owned and are quite a bit more expensive to buy and install."

Robert M., AL (2007 Toyota Prius Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Headlights have been replaced but even the new bulbs are so faint you can hardly tell if you have your lights on"

Anonymous, MI (2007 Toyota Prius 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"It is frustrating that it so difficult to replace just a bulb. Bulbs are inexpensive but I will have to replace it at the dealer for $250."

Anonymous, WA (2007 Toyota Prius 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"The headlights and taillights seem to go out quite often. Unfortunately it takes a service center to replace the headlight bulbs. Some local shops charge over $100 to replace a headlight bulb! But Beaverton Toyota changes them for free. They just charge $12 for the bulb itself."

Anonymous, OR (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

Anonymous, KY (2007 Toyota Prius Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Lost the headlight retainer spring while changing bulb. Very labor intensive endeavor to change bulb. Toyota does not include this as a purchasable part. Cost $25 for a used spring. Now bright lights don't work. Unable to determine cause. No information readily available on how they work with a D4R HID bulb"

Dennis G., TX (2007 Toyota Prius Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"The cost is very expensive and they go out much faster than other lights on other vehicles. The distance the light provides is below average"

Robert M., AL (2007 Toyota Prius Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"loose connection; had to replace bulb; cost over $500"

Anonymous, NC (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"My left xenon headlight "flickered". When I investigated the possible cause of the problem, I found that this had been an ongoing problem with this type of headlight. According to the dealer and Toyota, there has been a recall. I was never informed of it. After some "discussion", Toyota agreed to fix the headlight problem which involved the module, not the headlight"

Vicki R., PA (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Seals fail & moisture damages bulbs so the entire headlight has to be replaced. Both headlights replaced in 2016"

Anonymous, MA (2007 Toyota Prius 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Original HID headlights were replaced under warranty at 2.5 years (28,614 miles), and now 7 years after that both went out again. Bulbs alone are $150. Each!!! Labor, to remove the bumper (!!!) another $145. Toyota now uses longer lasting and even more expensive LED for their high end lights but I'm stuck with these HID monsters. $300 to replace a headlight!!! Ugh. Just happened this month so I'm still seething"

Anonymous, VA (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"While driving the right headlight will go out periodically. If I turn the headlights off and an it will come one again. In order to replace the headlight I'm told that the front bumper needs to be removed to do so. $300+ for the mechanic to check the headlight"

Peter M., MD (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"One or both headlights go off without warning nearly every time I drive at night. A quick off/on with the switch takes care of it for a while. Dealer said they could replace the headlights for $300 each but would not guarantee that would fix it"

"intermittent shorting -cant get. if it is a ballast or bulb"

Robert M., HI (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"The headlights on this car have gone out a few times, and the design of this Prius makes it very difficult to replace the headlights. They essentially cannot be done by the owner. The lights cost over $150 per light, and installation is at least another $100 (and I have to bargain them down on that). The design of this car is the only one that I have ever seen where you cannot do this yourself. The explanation given by the dealership is that the LED lights are supposed to last three times longer than old style lights, so it shouldn't be a problem. Well, I have had to have both replaces twice in ten years, and they said they will last 9-10 years each. Toyota should have admittd this design error and replaced these lights with no labor cost. It's a design flaw. Most mechanics have indicated that the front bumber must be removed to change out these bulbs. Apparently if you have very long thin fingers you may be able to do it without taking it off, but.... really???? :-) Other than that, the car has been good and I look forward to getting a Tesla Model 3 next."

Richard M., MI (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Left headlight intermittently working. Unable to replace them myself (difficult to work on). Dealer replaced both HID headlights for $500 (300 for parts, 200 labor)."

Jim C., WA (2007 Toyota Prius Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Very difficult to change headlight bulbs. Requires removal or loosening of body panels. Lost spring clip for bulb. Had to purchase from wrecking yard. Toyota does not carry this item. The lights still do not operate properly. Occasionally go off. Can be temporarily corrected by turning headlights off and on. Would like to convert to LED. Conversion not readily available."

Dennis G., AZ (2007 Toyota Prius Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Headlights were expensive to replace. They are awkwardly placed and difficult for an owner to replace without the help of a mechanic."

Rebecca M., CA (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"This is regarding the LED headlights. The left headlight was a problem before the car went out of warranty. It was replaced by a dealer, along with the right headlight because they said it would be more economical to do them together because they had to take the whole front grill off to do one. A few years later, I was stopped because the left headlight was out. I took it to a dealer (not the same one), who replaced the headlight again. Then, just a few months ago, I got stopped again. It seems the headlight is intermittent. Randomly on/randomly off. An independent garage said the light was OK and it would have to go to a dealer. The dealer replaced the light and said it was intermittent because it was going bad. This was just a couple of months aga, but the right headlight has been OK all along. Just waiting for the left headlight to go again. I'm not a mechanic, but doesn't it seem like it could be a ... just waiting for it go go out again. I used the fog lamps get back to work. Unfortunately, the bright light didn't work either. Maybe it is the bulb. But I wonder if a short is helping it along."

Karen A., NY (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Moisture leaked into the housing under the lens of the driver's side headlamp. The lamp occasionally would fail to illuminate due to the moisture. This required a complete replacement of the headlamp assembly at a cost of over $400"

Anonymous, (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"This problem sometimes includes just the display screen and at times the whole panel or dashboard. It is still drive able but it does not even display the speed which can be very dangerous. A bug where the car won't turn off is associated with this issue."

In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"Navigation was one of the features we were looking for in car, so it was a disappointment when it stopped working shortly after we bought this used car. However it doesn’t seem important enough to replace/repair the GPS since we can use our iPhone navigation. Wile the display will work for the rear view camera, when navigation is selected, the display is snowy or with lines."

"This has the WORSE software of any navigation system I have ever used. So unfriendly, I only use it to look at the map, and I will no longer upgrade them! This is a clear case of in-house design is pathetic"

Ralph A., CA (2007 Toyota Prius Base 1.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Navigation system stopped working completely. Evidently, a few years ago some water got into the passenger compartment. Since the GPS is located under the front seat it got wet and eventually rusted out. This is obviously a bad location for the GPS"
