    Exhaust

Muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, heat shields, leaks.

    What Owners Say

    Catalytic converter

""Check Engine light comes on regularly and the dealer says it will ultimately need a new catalytic converter, which I can't afford. It started about 2 years and 10000 miles ago. No performance problem so far.""

Anonymous, WA (2013 Toyota Prius Three 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

""My catalytic converter was stolen last year. Last week thieves tried to steal the replacement too, and damaged it. I wish the design didn't require so much precious metal.""

Anonymous, CA (2013 Toyota Prius Five 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
    Other/unsure

""After about 2020, the navigation system cannot be updated. Toyota has the option to do this or not. I even contacted the navigation system manufacturer and they could not assist. Not being able to have the navigation system updated can lead to major problems on the road, especially when traveling. For this one reason alone, I will probably not purchase another Toyota.""

Anonymous, (2013 Toyota Prius Unsure 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"The seal on the sun roof has dried out and has popped up. No leak as of now. Hood paint is now pock marked forswear and the Sun. Not too bad right now."

Anonymous, MA (2013 Toyota Prius Three 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"I have a very slow oil leak from (I think) an aging gasket, which so far has not effected the car's drivability, fuel economy, or safety. Also, a sensor in the exhaust system needs replaced. Estimated total cost of repairs were over $3K, at the start of 2025. I bought the car used in 2019, so don't know whether the prior owner did anything to contribute to the overall wear and tear on the car before I bought it. Aside from that, I had one flat tire (which I fixed). But in any event, the car still runs well and still gets great gas mileage, even with the oil leak and sensor issue, which has yet to be fixed."

Anonymous, IN (2013 Toyota Prius Three 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"I think is was called a "Power Inverter" which failed. A light came on saying I need to pull of the road ASAP"

Premature pad/rotor wear, pulsation or vibration, antilock system, parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, squeaking, brake failure, regenerative braking.

    What Owners Say

    Antilock braking system (ABS)

"The dealership told us the ABS Pump failed. A $2800 repair."

Anonymous A., GA (2013 Toyota Prius Three 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Constant pulsing. Multiple visits to dealer. Said they had to wait for failure to figure it out. External mechanic figured it out just before failure and sent me back to them for warranty repair. They were hoping i would outlive the warranty"

Anonymous, HI (2013 Toyota Prius Five 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

""My braking issue was one problem but I can't provide the degree of specificity requested, but I can tell it cost me $4000.00 to fix and since Toyota extended warranty for it, it must have been quite common.""

Anonymous A., SC (2013 Toyota Prius Unsure 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
    Calipers

"Rear brake calipers failed to fully retract, leaving friction brake pads engaged slightly at all times. Brake pads were worn at 45 degree angle and the calipers needed to be fully replaced."

Anonymous, OH (2013 Toyota Prius Three 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
    Master cylinder

""The pump cycles every 3-5 seconds to keep pressurizing the system. Tried a partial fix, need to replace the Master cylinder completely.""

Anonymous, AR (2013 Toyota Prius Three 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

""At around 153,000 miles, a bunch of lights on the dashboard came on and the brake pedal went nearly to the floor. I was able to still brake, but it required far more effort. At the dealership, they informed me that the brake booster pump and accumulator had failed. It turns out that Toyota had extended the warranty for this repair with it being a known failure item; however, that warranty only was extended to 10 years and 150,000 miles. Toyota was not willing to help in anyway with the cost of the repair as I was 4 months past the 10 year mark, and over 150,000 miles. I paid nearly $3,000 for the repair to the dealership which was a substantial percentage of the vehicle's worth.""

Anonymous A., GA (2013 Toyota Prius Two 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

""Brake master cylinder replaced after dashboard brake warning lights came on. After diagnosis, mechanic recommended replacing brake master cylinder. 1700 dollars for part and labor.""

    Other brakes problem

"On my last state mandated inspection I was told that I had to have my rear brakelines replaced."

    Anonymous A., ME (2013 Toyota Prius Plug-in 1.8-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)
    Premature brake wear

"We have mandatory yearly vehicle inspections here in Maine. Every year it seems *something* is found that needs to be repaired under threat of failing inspection. It almost always involves the brakes. I have had the rear brakes and rotors replaced twice in the past four years, and also the front brakes and rear brake lines. Word on the street is that if the dealership does not find something to repair they lose money on the inspection (which is a state mandated $18). There is no real way to confirm that these repairs are necessary."

    Anonymous A., ME (2013 Toyota Prius Plug-in 1.8-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"new rear breaks summer of 2024. Had to replace Mar 2024. Shop said frozen caliper."

An unexpected hybrid power system shut down may increase the risk of a crash.
    Summary:
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2013-2015 Prius and 2014-2017 Prius V vehicles not included in recall 18V-684. Excessive voltage in the Intelligent Power Module (IPM) within the inverter may cause the hybrid system to shut down, causing the vehicle to stall while being driven.
    What should you do:
Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will perform a software update for the hybrid system. If the vehicle has experienced an inverter failure with certain hybrid system faults related to this condition, the inverter assembly will be repaired or replaced, prior to software update. Toyota is recalling certain model year 2010 through 2014 Prius vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the Intelligent Power Module (IPM) inside the inverter module (a component of the hybrid system) contains transistors that may become damaged from high operating temperatures. If this occurs, various warning lamps will be illuminated on the instrument panel and the vehicle will have reduced power allowing it to only drive a short distance.
    What should you do:
Toyota will notify owners and dealers will update the software for both the motor/generator control electronic control unit (ECU) and the hybrid control ECU, free of charge. If an owner experiences a failure of the inverter before the vehicle receives updated software, the dealer will repair or replace the inverter assembly with a new one at no charge. The recall began on March 21, 2014. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331.
