    Exhaust

Muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, heat shields, leaks.

    What Owners Say

    Other exhaust system problem

"The screen popped up with maintenance needed, bring to dealer. As the car had just past 50,000 miles, I thought it was Toyota trying to get me into their shop, and ignored it. I do not use the dealer. I have an excellent mechanic. Then I was driving down the road on Friday and a little red thermometer showed up. I called my mechanic. He said to check the oil. I did, after the car sat for a while, and it was full. So I looked at all the fluids and there was one tank that was nearly empty. All I could see was a little pink near the bottom. It is surprising that the little red light showed up So late. Youd think that it would be set to showed up before almost empty. So I put water in and drove to my mechanic, 30 miles away. By the time I got there all the water Id added was gone. My mechanic put his finger in the exhaust pipe and it came out wet. My model of Prius has a heat exchanger in the exhaust system, and Toyota came out with a bulletin saying that they had failed in particular models. Repair was covered by Toyota to 80,000 miles. This is my third Prius. I love Priuses. The local dealer said that yes, it was a warranty fix and they would do it. I was told me the wait time on the part 2 1/2 months. The car is not drivable. What am I supposed to do? Im a widow: I cant borrow my husbands car. Their answer: to buy another car and then sell it . My mechanic said there were workarounds on the internet. So he did a workaround. I had to wait from for a short hose to be shipped. And now Im driving my car, waiting for the part from Toyota. Frankly, after this experience, I dont have a great desire to buy another Toyota. They have excellent engineers. The Toyota dealer couldve offered to do a workaround for the failed part. But no, buy another car. Another beef I have about my Toyota Prius is that the ground clearance is so low that I shattered part of the front bumper pulling a U-turn and hitting a curb. My other two Toyota Priuses didnt have this problem. Of the 3 Priuses Ive had, the best was the Gen 2."

Anonymous, TN (2017 Toyota Prius Two 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Clear coat started peeling on the roof in Spring 2022. Then clear coat peeled on car trim in Fall 2022. In 2023 clear coat peeling began on door trim and body of the car. I talked with the Toyota Service manager and he said he would follow-up on this. He then informed me that I had no recourse; and would have to pay to repaint my car!"

Anonymous A., CO (2017 Toyota Prius Two 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Sometime in past year, the main lock button (on door of drivers side) has been faulty."

Anonymous, TN (2017 Toyota Prius Two 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
    Other body problem

"The undercarriage of the 2017 Prius is so low that slowly going over a speed bump caused a piece of the undercarriage to either break or to become detached at a connector and then drag on the ground. Our car service center simply cut the broken piece off. The low clearance of the car is one of my original and continued criticisms I have about it."

Anonymous A., CO (2017 Toyota Prius Two 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, seals and/or weather stripping, air and water leaks.

    Squeaks or rattles

    "Noises often under the dashboard"

Anonymous A., FL (2017 Toyota Prius Four 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"I drove it home with a rattle under the dashboard. The dealer said, "No problem. We have three years to fix it under warranty." Three separate Toyota dealership repair departments have NOT been able to fix it. It rattles on back roads and we love to drive back roads. I admit that it is intermittent and therefore harder to hear and fix, but it doesn't stop it from being maddening when it happens. I had the issued bumped up to Toyota's Southeast Regional Office, but the local dealerships kept giving me the round around, so I stopped wasting my time contacting them. It happens less frequently, but it still happens."

Anonymous, FL (2017 Toyota Prius Three 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

    Brakes

Premature pad/rotor wear, pulsation or vibration, antilock system, parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, squeaking, brake failure, regenerative braking.

    What Owners Say

    Other brakes problem

"Unlike normal brake wear, my brakes rusted because when I drive, I usually end up using regenerative braking. My brakes sorted rusted themselves on, reducing my mileage and sounding bad. Because I knew I had some sort of brake issue, I was anxious to get it fixed. The dealer said the earliest appt was 3 weeks, so I got someone else to fix it. I don't remember whether my front brakes went first or my rear, but the same thing happened with the other brakes a year or two earlier."

Anonymous, ON (2017 Toyota Prius 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
    Rotors

"Rotors and calipers completely rusted through when we werent driving much in the 2020 pandemic and required full replacement"

Anonymous, MA (2017 Toyota Prius Two 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

    What Owners Say

    A/C compressor

Anonymous, NY (2017 Toyota Prius Four 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
    Refrigerant leaks

"Coolant leak caused overheating (no temperature gauge - warning light came on for a few seconds, off, on again). Stopped within 3 miles. Shop diagnosed bad thermostat, replaced it. Following week it was leaking coolant again. I did some research online, Prius owners suggested heat exchanger or water pump failure. Took it back to shop asking to check those things. Diagnosed heat exchanger failure and did a bypass to avoid coolant leakage. Will need to replace heat exchanger unit for $1200."

Anonymous, GA (2017 Toyota Prius ECO 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

    Engine Major

Engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head, head gasket, turbocharger or supercharger, timing chain or belt.

    In-car Electronics

Infotainment system (audio, GPS, phone), rear entertainment system, backup or other camera/sensors, head-up display.

    What Owners Say

    Display screen goes blank

"In my opinion, the factory based Toyota Entune system is worthless. I would drive for five minutes and then the system went blank altogether. I restarted the vehicle several times to no avail. I ended up replacing the head unit altogether with a new one that included Android Auto. I have had no problems since. However, the radio takes 10 to 15 seconds after ignition before it becomes active."

    Engine Electrical

Alternator, starter, hybrid battery replacement, hybrid battery related systems, regular battery, battery cables, engine harness, coil, ignition switch, electronic ignition, spark plugs and wires failure, auto stop/start.

    What Owners Say

    Coil

"Cylinder 3 coil pack failure causing engine misfire. Replacement of coil pack did not fix issue. Took to shop and they determined it was an issue with the new coil pack and new spark plugs, but both were compatible with the vehicle."

Anonymous, OK (2017 Toyota Prius Two 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

Radiator, cooling fan, water pump, thermostat, antifreeze leaks, overheating.
