Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Our subscribers provide great insights into their satisfaction by answering one simple question: If they had it to do all over again, would they definitely buy or lease the same model? In addition, respondents also rate their cars in six categories: driving experience, comfort, value, styling, audio, and climate systems. Pulsation or vibration

"When driven in in the mountains and the rotors heated they caused heavy pulsation."

Charles M., (2011 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)

"Cheap aftermarket brakes were installed prior to our purchase. About 12 months into our ownership, the very slight brake vibration was getting worse. I mentioned it to our Toyota dealer, who checked the brakes and found all the discs and the two rear calipers were unserviceable. They were all replaced with genuine parts for around CAN$2000. The funny thing was my wife drove it that night, and said that the brakes were not functioning as well as she thought they should. When I mentioned that we had an ice storm go through and all the roads were solid ice, she decided that maybe they were fine."

Rogelio V., OK (2011 Toyota Sienna LE 3.5-L V6)

"Mechanically, the car has been very reliable; however, the interior has not held up well at all. The mats were a poor design and came out of their tracks with a year. The molding on the drivers seat fell off. The windshield cowl and trim are falling off, the arm rests both on the door and attached to the seats have failed/collapsed, The stow away third row seats have had multiple issues and required repair. The sliding door alarm goes off every time the vehicle takes a left and slightly leans. Very costly to repair, so we have not. We took it to one body shop that said the paint was defective and needed to repaint the whole minivan for $10,000. The dealer wouldn't do anything for free to repair the paint, but suggested it just needed a thorough polishing, which they charge us $300 for. Sure enough, a few months later, the paint is back to flat and chalky. Both the body shop and the dealer shop said this was a common problem with white Toyota's. Drive System

Driveshaft or axle, CV joint, differential, transfer case, 4WD/AWD components, driveline vibration, traction control, electronic stability control (ESC), electrical failure.

What Owners Say

4WD/AWD components

"Viscous coupling failure at 55,000 miles. Not covered by Toyota. $2,200. Common problem with AWD Rav4s, Siennas and new Highlanders. Part # is on its second iteration, so they can't get it right. Dealership would have replaced it for free if it was a Rav4. Part didn't outlast the brakes! Part is sealed for life with no maintenance possible"

Kimberly H., MA (2011 Toyota Sienna LE 3.5-L V6)

"4WD/AWD is garbage. Failed after 5000 miles of use. Toyota wants to charge +$2200 for the repair! Not worth it . Just buy the FWD/2WD system."

Dale W., AL (2011 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)

"The differential magnetic coupler has a faulty dust-water shield that allows moisture and dust to penetrate to the main support bearing in the coupler housing. This ruins the bearing which is part of a major subassembly. This is the same parts and problem that forced a recall for the similar years RAV4 !! HOWEVER, Toyota did not notify Sienna owners of a recall OR EVEN to have the coupler checked. THIS IS A MAJOR FAILING and various owners groups have complained to Toyota AND the National Traffic Safety Ass. TO NO AVAIL or offer of assistance. Most owners are being quoted around $2100 to install an upgraded unit (they know they have a bad design). WHY toyota fixed the RAV4 but NOT the identical components in the Sienna is CRIMINAL !!"

"Between 60,000 and 120,000 miles, my 2011 Sienna reports a P0430 error caused by a bank 2 O2 sensor identical to my previous 2004 Sienna. Repair is now aprox $250 at my mechanic but - the first time I experenced it, I followed the repair path of replacing the catalytic converter, fuel treatments, engine analysis, and the sensors were more expensive in the past. The Check engine warning also disables AWD - a primary reason I purchased the Sienna. Today, I expect to see a P0430 error occasionally through the ownership of my Sienna replacing the Bank 2 O2 sensor after one or 2 warnings."

What Owners Say

Battery (not hybrid or electric)

Coil

"The coil on the distributor went bad and affected the drive system, traction control, and pistons. It was covered under warranty"

Emily N., ID (2011 Toyota Sienna XLE 3.5-L V6)

"I have had two coil failures since this was new. We have not put many miles on this van. I fixed the coil on plug the first time, it was the # 4 cylinder. The second time it was # 5 and I didn't have the time to take the entire intake off. So when I had i repaired I had them replace all the cop's in the rear. We were taking care of my ailing mother and not able to travel so we didn't use our van much. Woith only 18,000 miles I think two coils should not have failed. This is a major failure of parts that should last longer."

Paul A., FL (2011 Toyota Sienna SE 3.5-L V6)

"Ive had two coil on plugs fail. I could fix the one in the front of the van it was easy to get to. The rear coil took a professional mechanic all day to replace. So when he was in there I had him replace all three under the intake in the rear of the engine."

Engine Major

Engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head, head gasket, turbo or supercharger, timing chain or timing belt.

What Owners Say

Head gasket

"had to be replaced at 125000 kms. Very bad!"

Anonymous, AB (2011 Toyota Sienna LE 3.5-L V6)

"During a routine service interval at approx 145,000 miles my mechanic reported a leaking head gasket. The cost to repair a single head gasket is labor intensive, and Toyota motors generally have an excellent reliability reputation (my mechanic was very surprised). My repair involved replacing the engine with a 4year unlimited mileage warranted re-manufactured engine. While more expensive than replacing a head gasket, it removed the doubt and risk that I might experience another issue with the existing engine - plus during the replacement, all seals, gaskets, hoses, and pumps were replaced (that would not have occurred during a head gasket replacement service) . During the engine replacement, I learned that both head gaskets were leaking, the rear engine seal was leaking, and my water pump was failing. I'm now driving a 2011 Sienna with a power plant having less than 30,000 miles on it."
