Despite a light freshening for 2012, Tacoma was beginning to show its age at this point. Still, the utilitarian, practically bulletproof machine excels in hauling, towing, and off-road use—though not much else. The smooth and punchy V6 powertrain is a saving grace. Still though, for everyday driving or commuting, the Tacoma feels dated and uncomfortable.

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

What Owners Say

Antilock system (ABS)

"Just touch the brake pedal and it brakes. There no play in it like a normal car. I reported it to the dealer and they gave some complicated reason why it should be that way. So I bought the next car from a different dealer"

Donald W., VT (2013 Toyota Tacoma)

"The ABS went out at 4000mi. At that time there was no recall but was covered under the warranty. The dealership is probably most at fault with the failure in installing the new part incorrectly which then caused the brake line not reconnected properl"

Anonymous, VA (2013 Toyota Tacoma)

"Compressor seized about a year ago. Have not bothered to have it repaired"

Anonymous, PA (2013 Toyota Tacoma 2.7-L 4 Cyl)

"Failure causing inability to drive. Toyota dealer vehicle towed to stated only option was aftermarket a/c compressor because OEM compressor has been on backorder for weeks and Toyota can't give us any idea when they may become available. Aftermarket compressor plus installation = $1800!!"

"capacitor faulure"

Julius W., TX (2013 Toyota Tacoma PreRunner 4.0-L V6)

Christine M., MA (2013 Toyota Tacoma Base 2.7-L 4 Cyl)

"Once a year for 2 years. Same issue."

Anonymous, FL (2013 Toyota Tacoma 2.7-L 4 Cyl)

"Two summers after used vehicle purchase, the air conditioner would not cool the cab at all. The dealer said it was very low on refrigerant, but no freon leak was identified. Therefore, they would not cover under warranty. I had to pay to install freon, with a color marker to identify freon leakages. No leakage has been found since, so how did freon get low in the first place?"

Anonymous, MD (2013 Toyota Tacoma Base 2.7-L 4 Cyl)

"lost the a/c completely blowing warm. dealer had it for a week with no outcome. returning blowing cold and lasted 1 week. 2nd visit the a/c lines were changed and that fixed the problem. Not very cold a/c for fla. weak"

Linda H., TX (2013 Toyota Tacoma Base 2.7-L 4 Cyl)

"Bluetooth phone not always reliable"

Anonymous, OR (2013 Toyota Tacoma Base 2.7-L 4 Cyl)
Display screen goes blank

"System just reboots a few times a week even after the upgrade is software that I was assured would fix the issue. Been back to dealership several times exclusively to resolve this issue without success"

Anonymous, CO (2013 Toyota Tacoma X-Runner 4.0-L V6)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"Not user friendly considering I'm driving. Makes me scroll through a million songs. Doesn't pick up all of my music"

Patrick A., AB (2013 Toyota Tacoma 4.0-L V6)
Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"Because the display froze and looped when the phone was connected via bluetooth to the radio, we were forced to uncouple the phone, permanently, from the radio. So, hands-free phone no longer is available. The display has stopped freezing and loopin"

Linda H., TX (2013 Toyota Tacoma Base 2.7-L 4 Cyl)

"Sounds horrible. People can't hear me and I can't hear them. Barely makes it worth having"

Drive System

Driveshaft or axle, CV joint, differential, transfer case, 4WD/AWD components, driveline vibration, traction control, electronic stability control (ESC), electrical failure.

What Owners Say

4WD/AWD components

"I need to use 4WD low range several times a week. Shifting into or out of 4WD low range with this electronic shifter is a complete headache. I am following instructions exactly, but often have to turn off engine, shift to neutral, and wait 1-5 minutes for transfer case to unlock and allow me to shift into or out of low range. Complained to dealer; service tech says, yeah they're pretty finicky, but there's nothing we can do. Will never purchase another Toyota 4WD truck."

Roger N., MT (2013 Toyota Tacoma Base 2.7-L 4 Cyl)

"extremely difficult to shift into or out of 4 wheel drive low range. Follow instructions exactly but the only way to shift into or out of 4WD Low range is to turn the truck off and let it sit for 5-15 minutes. Have taken it to Toyota dealers, but all they say is, Yes, they're a little finicky that way."

Roger N., MT (2013 Toyota Tacoma Base 2.7-L 4 Cyl)
Differential

"Replaced only after I pointed out trouble bulletin on Toyota repair info website"

Anonymous, TX (2013 Toyota Tacoma PreRunner 4.0-L V6)

Driveshaft or axle

"Heavy "klunking" in driveline when accelerator is released at highway speeds, and then depressed"

Anonymous, NL (2013 Toyota Tacoma 4.0-L V6)
Transfer case

"I need to use 4WD low range several times a week. Shifting into or out of 4WD low range with this electronic shifter is a complete headache. I am following instructions exactly, but often have to turn off engine, shift to neutral, and wait 1-5 minutes for transfer case to unlock and allow me to shift into or out of low range. Complained to dealer; service tech says, yeah they're pretty finicky, but there's nothing we can do. Will never purchase another Toyota 4WD truck."

Roger N., MT (2013 Toyota Tacoma Base 2.7-L 4 Cyl)

"Electronic shifter refuses to shift into or out of 4 wheel drive low gear without shutting off engine and letting vehicle sit in neutral for 90 seconds. I have followed the directions in the owner's manual, and the instructions given by my dealer very precisely, but it simply will not shift without shutting off engine. Have repeatedly asked dealer to fix it, but were unable to, saying "yeah that 4 wheel low shifter can be kinda tricky.""

Roger N., MT (2013 Toyota Tacoma Base 2.7-L 4 Cyl)

Suspension

"Since 11/14 to 3/15, the dealer has alligned the truck 3 times and it is still not right. Now some great tires with a lot of tread are chopped and the ride and steering are well below acceptable"

Anonymous, NY (2013 Toyota Tacoma X-Runner 4.0-L V6)
Ball joints

"Both front ball joints needed replacement after 45000 miles of regular use. 70% city driving 30% highway non abusive driving"

Anonymous, MN (2013 Toyota Tacoma 4.0-L V6)
Springs or torsion bars

"Springs extremely weak. Truck cannot carry more than 400 lbs, combined with passengers, without bottom out on average high bumps for Newfoundland roads"

Anonymous, NL (2013 Toyota Tacoma 4.0-L V6)

"rear spring and rear banjo mis-designed. Warranty recall - Rear Springs replaced and transmission mount wedges installed to align drive shaft angle"

Anonymous, BC (2013 Toyota Tacoma PreRunner 4.0-L V6)

"this year my Tacoma had a broken spring so I replaced my springs with heavy duty springs I do not go off road with this truck up to 2012 the tacoma springs were recalled but not my year YET."

Marc A., MA (2013 Toyota Tacoma Base 2.7-L 4 Cyl)

"The rear leaf springs became worn out, causing the rear of truck to bottom out on larger bumps. There was a recall for this problem, but I opted to replace these parts (and the front suspension) with aftermarket lifted components."

John D., ID (2013 Toyota Tacoma 4.0-L V6)
Steering linkage (includes rack and pinion)

"My u joint in the steering column deteriorated to the point of warranting replacement. This is a common problem in Toyota's because the manufacture fails to incorporate this part in a rubber boot like so many other manufactures do"

Marc A., MA (2013 Toyota Tacoma Base 2.7-L 4 Cyl)
Steering wheel vibration

"At a speed of 20-25 mph an infrequent vibration was experienced in the floor board at the driver seat, the steering wheel and column. A warranty changed leaf springs, motor mounts, and other parts. The fix was successful"

Barry E., MA (2013 Toyota Tacoma PreRunner 4.0-L V6)

"U joints needed replacement. Have not heard of anyone having u joints issues decades."

Anonymous, TX (2013 Toyota Tacoma PreRunner 2.7-L 4 Cyl)

Engine Minor

Accessory belts and pulleys, engine computer, engine mounts, engine knock or ping, oil leaks.

What Owners Say

Engine computer

"Throttle stays open slightly or REOPENS slightly when trying to slow down in traffic. Rep indicated Toyota is protecting the catalytic converter. I consider it a major safety issue"

Tom S., CT (2013 Toyota Tacoma 4.0-L V6)

"This drive-by-wire system refuses to back the engine down immediately when the throttle is lifted. At the end of a long closed throttle deceleration, the computer often open the throttle slightly (to save the cat according to the Toyota rep) and that unintended acceleration when you least expect it can cause a dangerous situation in heavy traffic"

Tom S., CT (2013 Toyota Tacoma 4.0-L V6)

"After a month of minimal use due to a health problem on my part the Tacoma displayed multiple errors on Startup, plus it sometimes would not engage in Drive. Required some $500 worth of repairs @ Toyota dealer"

David L., VA (2013 Toyota Tacoma 2.7-L 4 Cyl)
Engine knock or ping

"The engine is extremely noisy with knocking and pinging. Dealership says it's normal and just the Tacoma engine. I told them if I had wanted a diesel sounding engine I would have bought one. Changing gas brand makes no difference"

Dennis E., NC (2013 Toyota Tacoma PreRunner 4.0-L V6)

"Consistent Ping on acceleration especially with cold engine. Some Ping at all times"

James H., SC (2013 Toyota Tacoma PreRunner 2.7-L 4 Cyl)
