The XC60 is quick, pleasant and benefited from Volvo's latest safety advances of the time. While handling is sound and secure, the mid-sized SUV is not exactly sporty to drive. Further, fuel economy is mediocre and some controls are not intuitive. While interior fit and finish are impressive, rear-seat room is only sufficient.

Reliability indicates how models have performed in the past, providing the basis for predicting how the vehicles will hold up in the year ahead. These charts provide the most comprehensive reliability information available to consumers. Based on information received from our latest subscriber survey for over 300,000 vehicles, our reliability history charts give you a rundown on how 2000 through 2021 vehicles are holding up in 17 potential trouble spots, ranging from the engine, transmission, and brakes to power equipment and the electrical system. NA indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Anonymous, TN (2015 Volvo XC60 T6 Drive-E 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Just after the car is started, the infotainment screen will have information on it, but I have no control over the screen, have no sound from the radio, and cannot change between functions. The only way to fix this is to completely turn off the car including opening the door. The car sometimes needs to be turned off and started multiple times in order to get the system to boot up correctly. This has been happening less frequently with multiple software updates through the dealership"

Cheryl W., MD (2015 Volvo XC60 T6 Drive-E)

Engine Minor

Accessory belts and pulleys, engine computer, engine mounts, engine knock or ping, oil leaks.

What Owners Say

Engine computer

"The check engine light has been on since within a month of getting the car in 2015, turning off occasional when taken in, then coming right back on within days. Same with the tire air pressure lights. One further gripe, the fuel efficiency is horrendous and considerable less than advertised for both fuel and city."

Sean M., TX (2015 Volvo XC60 T5 Drive-E 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Engine knock or ping

"Engine Ping after 15000 miles. No resolution from Volvo cars NA. Dealerships run tests and no error codes found. Unable to replicate. Ping occurs between 2000 and 4000 RPM. Usually 3 pings per incident. Affecting all Volvos with high output xc60 and S60. May be related to low speed preignition or preignition. Uswrs have reported sparkplug or piston damage"

"Oil cooler leaked into coolant system contaminating the entire system. Engine went below minimum on oil. Antifreeze was the thickness of peanut butter. It was repaired by Volvo dealer in October. Friday I noticed the antifreeeze reservoir is contaminated AGAIN. Not nearly as thick but it is black. Oil level on stick is now 1.5 inches above maximum. Drop it off for repair tomorrow. Engine has always had issues turning over. Dealer and Volvo tech support cannot determine the starting problem. 20"

"Not sure if it's a leak but it uses a lot of oil."

Anonymous, CA (2015 Volvo XC60 T5 Drive-E 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"on highway, displayed "reduced engine performance," the vehicle lost speed and could not be driven faster than 35 mph, acceleration from stop was painfully slow ... Volvo, the manufacturer, paid for the new engine, radiator, and alternator; I paid for the labor to install"

Anonymous, GA (2015 Volvo XC60 T6 Drive-E 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Per warranty administrator, this is a known vehicle problem. Piston rings have been updated and need replaced. This is an engine teardown and 10 weeks in the shop. Glad this was an under warranty approved fix as Volvo was of ZERO help. With that aside, the local Volvo dealer was fantastic, patient and worked with us to get the car fixed."

Anonymous, CA (2015 Volvo XC60 T6 Drive-E 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Started about 2.5 years ago, would need engine oil refilled after a few months, no leak obvious. Took a few visits until they diagnosed needing a valve job 12 months ago. Fixed under warranty"

Electronic ignition

"2015.5 xc60. Vehicle has trouble starting at times. It tries to turn over and eventually does. Dash displays "starting in progress". It eventually starts but we are waiting for the day that it doesn't. Dealer checked all electrical and fuel systems. Drained fuel tank and fuel lines. No cause ever found. Continues randomly to this day regardless of weather or brand of fuel purchased"

Stephen B., CO (2015 Volvo XC60 T6 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)
Starter

"Our Volvo XC60 has a feature where the engine automatically shuts off when you stop the car, in order save fuel. We had an ongoing problem for months where sometimes (~50% of the time) the car would not quickly re-start after stopping. The worst times were on freeway offramp, when the car would not restart and you would be stuck while cars zip past you at terrifying speeds. We took it to our local Volvo dealership for 3 rounds of massive repairs (replaced battery, battery cables, starter and other issues). It took months of work and thousands of dollars for the problem to be resolved. This was too much money and too big a problem. It's too bad, because it is a beautiful car, and our major family car, and we would otherwise love it. Sadly, I would not recommend an internal combustion engine car from Volvo ever again. Hopefully Geely will improve their build quality, and hopefully they will get it right with electric cars."

"AWD disabled light came on. Went to the dealer 3 times until it was fixed. Originally they stated it only needed a software update. They ultimately replaced the entire AWD module. Less than a week after replacing that module, the Airbag sensor came on. It seems to only come on when it is cold and there is a passenger in the car. The still haven't figured that out"

Anonymous, NH (2015 Volvo XC60 T6 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)
