Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2017 Volvo XC60 owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

What Owners Say

Normal routine brake wear

"Normal wear"

Anonymous, ON (2017 Volvo XC60 T6 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Normal brake wear"

Anonymous, ON (2017 Volvo XC60 T6 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Pulsation or vibration

"Problems with rotors when damp. Dealer fixed problem at no cost to me."

Don D., TN (2017 Volvo XC60 T5 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Rotors

"Rust. Prevents smooth stop, at times. 2nd. time we've had this problem with the car"

Don D., TN (2017 Volvo XC60 T5 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The rotors warped after 2500 miles."

Anonymous, NY (2017 Volvo XC60 T6 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Display screen freezes up

"The display screen issues started about 9 months into ownership of the car, and seemed to be solved with routine software updates. However after an update about a year ago, the screen would freeze or go blank from whatever initial display was visible when the car was first started. For example, if you first put the car in reverse, the back up camera would come in, and not go off, or allow any in car heat, radio, etc. adjustments until the car was shut off and started again. The deal (somewhat reluctantly) replaces both screen and operating module, and provided another three year warranty on the new screen and operating system at my insistence. No problems have occurred since."

Anonymous, IN (2017 Volvo XC60 T5 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"started 3 montsa ago. looked up problem on web - seems to be a problem with model car. Waiting for post covid-19 opportunity to take to dealer for warranty repair"

Anonymous, RI (2017 Volvo XC60 T5 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"When getting or receiving calls on my iPhone using Bluetooth in the vehicle, the audio on my side of the conversation would quickly fade to a volume so low I could not hear the person on the other end of the conversation"

Anonymous, MN (2017 Volvo XC60 T5 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Routine software updates

"There are just too many. The Volvo service writer and I have come to the mutual understanding that they will only be done when the car comes in for service, and that they will not be charged for."

Anonymous, IN (2017 Volvo XC60 T5 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Electric System

Alternator, starter, hybrid battery and related systems, regular battery, battery cables, engine harness, coil, ignition switch, electronic ignition, distributor or rotor failure, spark plugs and wires failure.

What Owners Say

Keyless entry

"door lock mechanism failed became non-working, interior lights remained on. apparently is a somewhat common xc60 issue. Had to turn off all interior lighting so battery didn't fail"

Anonymous, TX (2017 Volvo XC60 T5 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Warning lights

"Warning lights come on intermittently, sometimes lasting for days."

Anonymous, PA (2017 Volvo XC60 T6 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Suspension

Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage (includes rack and pinion), power steering (pumps and hoses, leaks), wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension.

What Owners Say

Tire wear is uneven

"both front tires experienced interior tire wear, down to the metal, that was not visible unless you were under the car or had the tires turned as far as they could go to the left/right. Car had less than 12000 miles when this occurred. Volvo states it's a tire defect, tire company states its due to a faulty alignment"

Anonymous, TX (2017 Volvo XC60 T5 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Wheel bearings

"I could hear a low growling noise coming from the front end wheel area at low speeds. At freeway speeds I could not hear anything. It was still under warranty and I took it in for a checkup. The dealer had to order replacement parts and they gave me a S90 to drive which was a fun experience. No cost to me."

Anonymous, OR (2017 Volvo XC60 T5 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Engine Major

Engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head, head gasket, turbo or supercharger, timing chain or timing belt.

What Owners Say

Cylinder head

"Cylinder head had broken and pieces were in the cylinder. Car was still operational and taken into the dealership very quickly after check-engine light came on. We were still under CPO warranty at the time, but ended up requiring a full engine replacement which would have otherwise cost more than $10,000."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Volvo XC60 T5 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Engine Minor

Accessory belts and pulleys, engine computer, engine mounts, engine knock or ping, oil leaks.

What Owners Say

Problem(s) fueling the tank

"The gas pump shuts off 3-4 gallons prior to tank being full. After that I have to trickle in the last 3 gallons. It has done this since I leased it, I have taken it to the dealer but they told me they could not find a cause. In a couple of cases I have overflowed the gas tank trying to finish filling it so it can be a dangerous issue in addition to a weekly nuisance."

Anonymous, OH (2017 Volvo XC60 T6 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Exhaust

Muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, leaks.

What Owners Say

Other/unsure

"Airbags warning light came on. Reset by dealer— still didn’t work. Ultimately had to sub out airbags b/c of corrosion on connections."

Anonymous, MA (2017 Volvo XC60 T6 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Transmission Minor

Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.

What Owners Say

Transmission sensor or solenoid

"At low speeds, it would feel like the transmission would just dump. The system would quickly recover, but it was very unsettling whenever it happened"

William G., TX (2017 Volvo XC60 T5 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Body Integrity

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, loose or cracked seals and/or weather-stripping, air and water leaks.

What Owners Say

Squeaks or rattles

"Loose fittings on interior. Overall car not as good as it should be for this price."

Paul P., OH (2017 Volvo XC60 T6 R-Design 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Drive System

Driveshaft or axle, CV joint, differential, transfer case, 4WD/AWD components, driveline vibration, traction control, electronic stability control (ESC), electrical failure.

What Owners Say

Driveshaft or axle

"Drive shaft broke while pulling out of a parking space with a small snow layer.. Car had 83 miles on it (several days after purchase). Volvo refused to honor the warrantee and blamed the snow. The reason I purchased all wheel drive was to be able to drive in snow. Never had this problem with any other 4 wheel car though I've driven thru deeper drifts."

Jane W., NY (2017 Volvo XC60 T6 R-Design 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Body Hardware

Power or manual windows, locks and latches, tailgate, hatch or trunk, doors or sliding doors, mirrors, seat controls, safety belts, sunroof, convertible top.

What Owners Say

Mirrors

"Side mirrors would sporadically not work. Would stick in closed position or would not return to closed position when the engine was off. New components were installed but didn't resolve problem. Finally one of the service staff showed us how to depress both right and left buttons on the control panel at the same time which cleared the problem"

Anonymous, IL (2017 Volvo XC60 T6 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Climate System
