Remember the good ol’ days when drying clothes lines swayed outside windows like ghosts in the wind? That practice won’t fly today any more than old-timey washboard scrubbers would for cleaning clothes. Today, a reliable dryer can get the job done dependably—without your skivvies accidentally blowing into your neighbor’s yard.

If you're searching for a new dryer, it pays to pick a model that's less likely to have problems. That’s where Consumer Reports’ annual fall survey tumbles in.

So which clothes dryer brands are the most and least reliable? CR's latest survey reveals the answers, so you’re not hung out to dry. CR's predicted reliability rating estimates the likelihood that newly purchased dryers from a given brand will develop problems or break within their first five years.

Our owner satisfaction rating reflects the proportion of CR members who are extremely likely to recommend the dryer they bought. To make it easier for you to choose, we factor these exclusive ratings into the Overall Score for each model in our clothes dryer ratings.

CR surveyed 95,727 members over a three-year span from 2018 to 2020. Survey results are based on CR members’ experiences with 105,995 dryers purchased new between 2010 and 2020.
