When you’re tight on space—and need a stacked compact washer and dryer to fit in a closet or kitchen corner—choosing the right set can prove a challenge. There aren’t many options, prices are high, and the washer and dryer must be a matching set in order to stack. Enter the matchmaker.

More on Laundry Appliances

Consumer Reports bought and tested 12 pairs of compact washers and dryers, putting them through the same rigorous testing as the full-sized sets you’ll see highlighted in “The Best Matching Washers and Dryers,” but using smaller loads, of course. Our tests found that performance varies widely in this small group.

Most compact washers sold are front-loaders, and manufacturers make only electric compact dryers at this time—not gas. Each compact machine measures 24 inches wide, and height and depth varies, which you’ll see in our washer and dryer ratings. Sales aren’t robust, however, so we do not have enough data in our reader survey to provide brand reliability information.

Washers With Vented Electric Dryers

The matching compact pairs below appear in alphabetical order by brand, not in order of Overall Score. Wash times are based on the normal cycle (or its equivalent) and the most aggressive setting. These dryers require a standard 4-inch duct to carry the moist, hot air outdoors. All sets come in white, unless otherwise noted.

Asko compact washer and dryer set.
Photo: ASKO

Asko W6424W washer and Asko T754W dryer
Price: washer, $900; dryer, $1,050
Features: The washer has 10 cycles, is gentle on fabrics, and should clean most loads well, but it might have trouble with heavily stained items (pretreating will help). Wash time is 75 minutes, which isn’t bad for a compact. The dryer takes 85 minutes to dry a 6-pound load of mixed cottons. That’s faster than some in this group. Claimed capacity is 2 cubic feet for the washer and 3.9 for the dryer.

There isn’t a bleach dispenser, but you can divide the detergent dispenser in two using a plastic divider that comes with the unit. Available in white and titanium.

Both require a 240-volt connection. The washer can plug into the dryer, which then feeds power to the washer—helpful if you have only one outlet.

There’s a two-year warranty.

Consider this: The washer vibrates a lot, making it important to perfectly level the washer when you install it. And while it’s relatively quiet, the dryer is noisier than most we tested.

Asko compact washer and dryer set.

Asko XL Series W8844XLW washer and Asko T884XL dryer
Price: washer, $2,300; dryer, $1,700
Features: The washer’s claimed capacity is 2.7 cubic feet, and the dryer’s is 5.1 cubic feet, making them the largest compact models we tested. The washer has 12 cycles and is among the best at cleaning in this group, but it’s tougher on fabrics and uses more water.

The detergent dispenser can be divided in two, like the set above, if you want it to dispense bleach.

Both need a 240-volt connection, but, like the Askos above, you can plug the washer into the dryer if you only have one outlet.

There’s a two-year warranty.

Consider this: Wash time is 145 minutes, the longest of all the models we tested. The dryer takes 108 minutes, the longest of the vented dryers. The washer vibrates a lot and runs relatively quietly, but the dryer is very noisy.

Blomberg compact washer and dryer set.

Blomberg WM98400SX washer and Blomberg DV17542 dryer
Price: washer$1,200; dryer, $680
Features: The washer has 16 cycles, is gentle on fabrics, and can clean most loads (but pretreating tough stains improves cleaning). Wash time is 95 minutes, and the dryer needs 94 minutes to dry a 6-pound load. Claimed capacity is 2.5 cubic feet for the washer, and 3.7 for the dryer.

Both appliances require a 240-volt connection, and you can plug the washer into the dryer.

There’s a one-year warranty.

Consider this: The washer vibrates a lot, similar to most in this group, but is relatively quiet. The dryer, however, is noisy.

GE compact washer and dryer set.
Photo: GE

GE WCVH4800KWW washer and GE DCVH480EKWW dryer
Price:
$900 each
Features: Cleaning is similar to most in this batch, so, again, pretreat stains. The washer has 10 cycles, is the most gentle on fabrics, and proves to be the fastest of this group—cycle time is 65 minutes. It uses less water than the washers above and extracts more of it, which shortens dryer time. The dryer is much faster than the dryers above, and took 70 minutes to dry our 6-pound load. Both machines are relatively quiet, and claimed washer capacity is 2.2 cubic feet, and 4 for the dryer.

The washer uses a standard 120-volt outlet; the dryer needs a 240-volt connection.

There’s a one-year warranty.

Consider this: The washer vibrates, but not as much as the others in this group.

Photo: Samsung

Samsung WW22K6800AW washer and Samsung DV22K6800EW dryer
Price:
$900 each
Features: Among the best at cleaning in this group, this washer is also stingy with water, using about the same amount as the GE, and is gentle on fabrics. There are 12 wash cycles and a steam feature to boost cleaning. The dryer is the fastest in this group, and took 68 minutes to dry our 6-pound load. Both machines are relatively quiet. The washer’s claimed capacity is 2.2 cubic feet, and the dryer’s is 4.

A standard 120-volt outlet works for the washer, but you need a 240-volt outlet for the dryer.

There’s a one-year warranty.

Consider this: Wash time is 100 minutes. The washer vibrates a lot, similar to most in this batch.

Washers With Ventless Electric Dryers

Ventless dryers are also known as condensing models, and they’re your only choice if you can’t run dryer ductwork to the exterior of your home. Ventless dryers have a condenser that removes humid air from the dryer drum. The condensation flows through a hose that feeds into a sink or drain. Several models in our tests offer an optional reservoir that collects the water, which you should empty after every use.

Appearing in alphabetical order by brand, these matching sets all have a white finish.

There’s a two-year warranty.

Consider this: Like all compact washers tested, the Bosch vibrates, though not as much as some in this group.
