From Our President: Keeping Our Promise to You

Consumer Reports magazine debuted in May 1936. From the very beginning, we made a commitment: to provide the independent, unbiased information and advice that consumers need. And for the past 90 years, we’ve worked to keep that promise.

At the core of that effort is helping you determine which products are worth your money. In that first issue, for example, our experts investigated the quality of everyday items like cleaning products and stockings. Nine decades later, we’re still at it, testing thousands of products each year for performance and safety. We also survey thousands of readers about their experiences with the products they own.

Promoting your health and safety has also been at the center of our mission. Our first issue examined the differences between Grade A and Grade B milk and highlighted the risks of raw milk. This issue builds on that tradition with "What’s the Healthier Choice?" Our guide helps you cut through the confusing nutrition claims in 10 popular food categories to find the best choices.

Honoring our pledge also means finding new ways to live up to it, which is why we expand to new areas each year. See the details on our first-ever cruise line ratings, based on a survey of 18,850 CR members about their recent voyages. Because even entertainment should be worth your hard-earned money.

For 90 years, we’ve been on your side. And you have our word: In all our work, and in every issue, we’ll renew our original promise to you.
