Buying appliances online

6 steps to scoring good deals on appliances from online retailers

Consumer Reports Money Adviser: September 2012

More people are buying large appliances on the Web. For example, hardly anybody purchased a refrigerator online a decade ago, but about 10 percent of fridges were bought that way in 2011, according to the market-research company Ipsos. You may be able to get a deal online, but make sure you include all the costs and consider some other key differences.

Factor in delivery. Shipping can add 10 to 15 percent to the total cost, though you'll sometimes find free-shipping promotions. Compare the best prices online with those at walk-in retailers, including delivery charges. Add in the cost of installation if it's required.

Add sales tax. More sites are charging it now. Even if a site doesn't, your state may expect you to pony up when income-tax time rolls around.

Give it a test run. Online pictures of, say, a dishwasher or range won't reveal how easy it is to use the controls and other features, or give you an accurate idea of the true color. So examine the product in a walk-in store first. And if the price is right, buy it there.

Check return policies. Read the online retailer's terms, including all the details on return shipping.

Read your rights. Manufacturer warranties are typically the same online and at walk-in stores. But online retailers often limit your "implied warranty" rights in their fine print. Those rights include an unwritten assurance that a product is reasonably free of defects.

Have a disposal plan. Many walk-in retailers offer free removal of old appliances, but online shoppers are usually on their own. Utility companies might offer free haul-away service as part of their energy-efficiency programs. If the unit is still working, consider donating it to a local charity or giving it away on Freecycle.org.
