How to Find the Best Sedan & Hatchback
If you don't need the capacity, ride height, or off-road capability of an SUV, sedans and hatchbacks are a great value. They're easy to park, fuel-efficient, and often have plenty of space for most people's needs.

Should I Buy a Small, Midsized, or Luxury Car?
-
Small Cars
PRICE RANGE $20,000 to $36,000pros & cons- Compact cars are small enough to park and maneuver easily in crowded settings without compromising passenger comfort. Hatchback body styles provide more cargo area space. Some are available with hybrid powertrains. The larger and more expensive models typically have better ride and handling characteristics.
- Subcompact models trade space and refinement for a lower price, and they can be noisy and slow to accelerate. They have spartan interiors, and the rear seats are snug for adults. Active safety systems may be optional or not available on base trims. They can be tricky to get into and out of.
-
Midsized/Large Cars
PRICE RANGE $27,000 to $55,000pros & cons- These cars have roomy interiors and can offer fuel economy comparable to that of smaller sedans. They accelerate quickly, they’re fairly quiet, and the accommodations in top trim levels can rival those of luxury cars. There’s room for five adults and their luggage to fit comfortably. Most models now feature hybrid powertrains, offer all-wheel drive, and come standard with most active safety systems.
- Every year there are fewer sedan choices, and they can get pricey.
-
Small Luxury Cars
PRICE RANGE $35,000 to $65,000pros & cons- Quick acceleration and nimble, sporty handling are common features, and most have supportive, poweradjustable front seats. Larger models are a significant step up, with higher-quality interior materials and more spacious cabins. Most basic active safety systems are standard.
- More advanced safety systems are often optional and packaged with pricey comfort features. Sportier models usually have a stiff ride and expensive tires that can wear out quickly. The rear seats in the smallest models are a better fit for children than adults.
-
Midsized/Large Luxury Cars
PRICE RANGE $48,000 to $85,000+pros & cons- Automakers don’t cut many corners with these models. They feature the highest-quality materials throughout the cabin. Both their front and rear seats are comfortable, roomy, and supportive, with some models offering massaging seats. There’s generous passenger room. Buyers will find many hybrids and PHEVs among the midsized models.
- Prices quickly climb, with some models exceeding $100,000. Automakers often introduce their newest, most convoluted controls and infotainment systems in these vehicles.
-
Electric Cars
PRICE RANGE $50,000 to $80,000pros & cons- All of these are quick and have quiet interiors, and most models provide plenty of room for both passengers and cargo. Being able to charge overnight at home is a bonus.
- Many EVs have fussy controls and awkward-to-use door handles as automakers attempt to be cutting-edge.
-
Sports Cars
PRICE RANGE $35,000 to $150,000+pros & cons- From drop tops to coupes and sedans, there are varying types of sports cars to suit buyers’ needs. Even the least expensive models deliver agile handling, strong and responsive brakes, and quick acceleration.
- Some sports cars can be difficult to get into and out of, have a ride quality that can border on harsh, and have elevated levels of road and wind noise that can become tiring, especially in convertibles. Most sports cars use tires that wear out quickly and are costly to replace. In addition, they are usually expensive to insure.
